Delay in shifting of illegal dumping ground Tribune News Service
Panchkula, October 8 Criticising the officials for the delay, the division bench, comprising the Chief Justice and Justice RK Jain, summoned the officials to appear for the next hearing on Monday. They have been asked to update the court regarding their efforts in sorting out the problem regarding the jhuriwala project. The court also expressed its displeasure over the state of garbage disposal in Panchkula and non-compliance by the authorities with earlier directions issued by it. The High Court observed that the authorities were doing lip service regarding the scientific disposal of garbage. The bench also reprimanded the officials for not complying with the prescribed conditions to minimize the foul smell in the area. Residents of Sector 23 complained that garbage thrown in the illegal dumping area have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. They also said the site was not being cleaned on a regular basis. |

Mother of victim deposes in court
Panchkula, October 8 The case had come up for hearing today in the District and Sessions Court. It was on November 15, 2011, when a three-year-old girl of Rajiv Colony was murdered after she was allegedly raped by her father, Dhanna Ram. The police said the incident took place at 2 am when the child was fast asleep. She was raped and hit brutally with a griddle a number of times and then stabbed by her father. Dhanna was booked for rape. Mother Rita Devi appeared before the Judge and said that even once a child in the locality said something in a light vein and Ram had thrown a brick at her too. She said that as they did not have enough money to get his treatment done at the hospital so they were getting him treated by a
tantrik. After her daughter’s death and husband’s arrest, Devi is residing in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and was not willing to even appear before the court. It was after the warrants were issued that she came to give her statements. It was around 2 am when everyone, including the girl’s mother, was fast asleep, The father and one-year-old brother were sleeping on the same cot. The father got up and tried to rape the child. Suddenly, after the child began to cry, her mother woke up and tried to stop him. In a rage, the accused took a griddle and hit the child brutally on her head a number of times. It was on the complaint of Devi that the case was registered. |

PU student held for murder bid
Chandigarh, October 8 Karanveer, a football player, was attacked inside the campus during practice on October 3 and was critically injured. The police said a prior enmity was the reason for the attack and they would make more arrests after interrogation. Accused duped 12 persons of Rs 7.20 lakh
Mohali, October 8 The fact has come to light after the Mohali police interrogated the accused, who was arrested at Balongi village yesterday. Thakur, who used to cheat his victims on pretext of helping them out while operating ATM cards also admitted that he had cheated at least four persons in Chandigarh. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Mohali SSP GS Bhullar said that apart from Zirakpur, Dera Bassi and Himachal Pradesh, he was also active in Chandigarh. “His involvement has been found in at least four such cases in Chandigarh. Today, a person from Sector 39, Chandigarh, also approached us and identified Thakur. We were told that he had given his complaint at the Sector 39 Police Station. Similarly, he had cheated some persons at the ATM counters in Sector 41, Sector 40 and Sector 35”, said Bhullar. The police also added that many such victims across the state were contacting them following the arrest of Thakur. “Investigations are on and he would be taken to Zirakpur, Dera Bassi and the Phase 1 Police Station on production warrant very soon. We are hopeful that many cases of ATM fraud wlill be solved soon”, said Bhullar. Meanwhile, the local court today sent Thakur in judicial custody after completing his one-day remand in police custody. |

Two held for impersonation
Chandigarh, October 8 The police registered a case under Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC against Anil Kumar, who appeared in the examination in place of Sandeep, a resident of Nirwana, Jind (Haryana). The accused was arrested from DAV Model School, Sector 15, where the exam was being conducted. A case was register against Kuldeep Singh in Sector 36 police station. He appeared in place of another candidate in the examination for the post of peon. The examination was held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36. The accused has been arrested. |

Rickshaw puller dies in accident
Chandigarh, October 8 The police has registered a case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304A of the IPC against the unidentified accused in the Sector 36 police station. The mishap occurred when the rickshaw puller was hit between South End chowk and Sector 43-44 Chowk by the car. He got injured and was admitted to GMSH 16 where he declared brought dead by the duty doctors. |

Chandigarh, October 8 In the match played today, the MPCA overcame Kerala with a first innings lead of 144 runs and garnered two points. Resuming from their overnight score of 13 for no loss, the Kerala team was bundled out for 106 in 53.5 overs. Kerala was chasing MPCA's total of 250 runs. GGSCW-26 girls win boxing tournament
Chandigarh, October 8 The ongoing inter-college boxing championship for women has seen widespread participation with a total of 109 pugilists, a new high, taking part in the tournament. A majority of the boxers who participated in the tourney hailed from the rural areas of Punjab. The local boxers proved their iron after winning the top spots in the event. “After a good promotion at the international level, the game is gaining popularity in the rural areas of Punjab. The initial stage witnessed some one-sided bouts but the quarter-finals were closely contested. Hopefully, the quality and the number of boxers will increase in next edition of the tournament,” said Sonia, head of the event's technical committee. Although the participation of a large number of boxers rose the standards of the tournament, the quality of the bouts remain a worry for the coaches. “The initial stages witnessed some amateur bouts. The colleges participating in the tourney should keep in mind the standard of players they are fielding. Officials need to prepare good boxers to make a name for their college,” said a coach. Over 780 schools to participate in Coca Cola cricket tournament
Chandigarh, October 8 The Punjab leg of the Coca-Cola Cricket Cup will have participation of the leading cricket teams from Chandigarh, Mohali, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Patiala and four minor districts. All the matches will be played on a knock-out basis.The district winners will then play a league-cum-knockout format tournament in Mohali. The four semifinalists will be awarded special prizes while the winners and the runners-up of the Punjab leg will be awarded prizes worth Rs 50,000 and Rs 35,000 respectively. The winners from the ten states will feature in the inter-state challenge. The national winners will take home Rs 1,00,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 70,000.
