Bold, bright & bollywood style
Come October and the season suddenly breaks into a riot of colours, heavy embroideries, eye-catching designs and all things bright and beautiful. And why not, it's the beginning of the wedding season — a season of splendour; colour, vitality, bonhomie and of course the accompanying fashion fiesta (read fluff, flounce and frill).
Well, talking of the bridal collections for the coming wedding season, the clothes are all shimmer and dazzle in true Bollywood style. Accessories play an important role and so does the mix and match concept. If on one hand we have the lehenga saris making a wave, on the other we have Anarkali style suits with a parallel salwar. From ethnic to western, this season is an eclectic mix of both for men and women. For designer trends, ace designers Shantanu and Nikhil brought the romance from the Renaissance and Baroque eras. In their collection they showcased brocades to floating tulle in all colours — from soft sweet golden to bold green and blue. For other designers styles we see jackets, dramatic weaves, graphic calligraphy, flowing silhouettes in net and chiffon with intricate embroidery in vogue. Groom with the best "Bundhgala with glittering hem and cuffs is the latest trend for men. Dhoti salwars and Jodhpuri pants are in this season. Other than that, it's the club wear that has made inroads into groom wear this season," says Manish Jain from Meena Bazaar. He adds, "Since men don't shy away from colours these days, we have bold hues for them. Right from electric blues to greens and reds, we have velvet coats. Five-piece suits are also doing well and so are casual jackets in Nehru collars. Embroidery too is in this season and we see a lot of it in men's wear." "Brocade Jodhpuri coat is another hot item in a groom's wardrobe. High neck velvet jackets with tiny embroidery too make a fashion statement and so do knee-length sherwanis. Printed silk scarves add a stylish touch and are a must have for 2013 weddings," says designer Gaurav Katta from Jaipur. "Though men's wear does not have as much innovation as women's wear but it's the introduction of colours in terms of wedding season that is new in grooms wear," says designer Nida Mahmood. Fit for the bride The bridal wear for women has always been a glittering affair with lehengas, cholis, suits and dupattas. While it's the play of fabric this season; we have lace, silk, satin, velvet brocade, Benarasi silk and net making the fashion toast. "Brocade and chantilly lace jazz up the outfits. Bias cut-paneled lehengas in jewel tones of reds, wines, golds, bright greens, electric blues, pinks, fuchsias, nudes and peachs are to look out for. "Lacy peplums, flared sleeves and ruffled petticoats teamed with long blouses in strap sleeves add to the old-world charm. Gotta patti is once again the hottest trend this season," says Divya Kapoor from Samsaara. If you want to experiment, look for the concept of gown-cum-sari this wedding season. "It's the concept of mix-and-match that is catching up fast and that's not alone in fabrics, we mean outfits too. Layering is quite a trend now and so is the antique look. We have saris that make use of three to four fabrics like velvet, tissue, Benarasi and net. For colours, it's either the hip-hop colours like flourscent green, hot pink, orange that are in vogue or we have the dusky hues of stone grey, light pink, sea green, peach taking the cake," says Rajneesh Jain from Meena Bazaar. "Well, since Indian weddings are such a grand affair, we have designers pitching in with their designs to make it even bigger and better. Corsets with fish cut and slimmer lehengas are quite popular now. Ghararas are an interesting silhouette, which is getting a lot of attention. Other than this contrasting dupattas are another very cool trend to look out for," says well-known designer Nida Mahmood.

Happy in diversity
Actor Jonita Doda is juggling three different film worlds at present. Shooting for films in Hindi, Punjabi and Malayalam, she is living the dream she wants her life to be — being happy!
In Chandigarh, to inaugurate Aura, a Thai body spa, Jonita, shares excerpts from her journey with us. Her experience at Toronto for the Punjabi International Film Academy Awards has left Jonita thrilled, as has Blenders Pride International Punjab Fashion Week. Papa’s darling (she wears a pendant to proclaim the same), she is happy juggling between three film industries. Busy with movies Dil Sada Luteya Gaya, Saturday Night and Zebra Crossing, this lovely lady is having fun although she jumbles up her lines at times. Is it difficult handling different words? “It is challenging, but this is what I would love to do. I had the option to stick to Bollywood, but I would also like to do something for my own Punjabi industry. Even if it takes our cinema little bit ahead, I am game for it. South-Indian films are great; work is done at a very professional level. There is so much to learn there as an actor,” says Jonita. “I am one of those fortunate few who have the family by her side. I couldn’t imagine my life to be like it is today without my doting parents and brother,” says Jonita, who likes to find time for family and friends even besides her hectic schedule. Being an actor requires her to be fit and instead of hitting the gym, she picks up a sport — be it swimming or tennis. “Health is anybody’s primary concern and mine too,” says Jonita, who has been a huge Steffi Graf fan. As an actor, she wants to give memorable films and is happy with her home banner Cinevalley Productions that is starting new projects while giving a chance to fresh talent in various streams. Jonita is living life to the fullest and that is what she intends to keep doing! mona@tribunemail.com

Acting is all it takes…
Television soaps are one thing that can keep you glued to the idiot box for hours, especially when you are addicted to the story line and the characters. The telly stars slog for long, exhausting hours to give you episode after episode and end up showing their acts in Bollywood as well, but they are rather contented with the wider reach of television and readily work hard. These small screen stars have brought about a veritable revolution in the television industry wherein they are as a big a name as in any of the Bollywood stars! We check out with a few television stars how they feel when they become a part of the silver screen and does their ‘fame’ have any bearing in the film industry? Happy in his own skin
Ronit Roy, a well-known Bollywood and television star, started his journey with the movie Jaan Tere Naam and then did many more movies. Says Ronit, “I came to the television industry when I had nothing to do in the movies.” The experienced actor shares that till date he has many offers for movies in hand, but he picks only the ones he can do justice to. We wonder what kind of impression Bollywood industry has of people working for TV. “You cannot generalise Bollywood because there are some people who look down upon small screen artists and then there are people who recognise your work. Ronit Roy has recently appeared in Anurag Kashyap’s Udaan and Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children. Besides, he will be seen in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year’ playing the role of a coach, Shootout at Wadala, Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly, where he is in the lead role, and also Anthony D’Souza’s Naam hai Boss with Akshay Kumar in a negative role. “Now all this while I have being doing television with Adalat, so I have never left it,” adds Ronit. For Ronit, an actor is an actor whether in the main lead or not. Face value really matters
Eijaz Khan, who is currently shooting for the movie Lucky Kabootar, says that working in television soaps brings about Bollywood offers.
“Most of the TV stars end up with roles in movies because the film industry knows their calibre,” adds Eijaz. When asked why television stars were running after Bollywood, we get a smart answer, “It’s just that an actor looks for progression in career and good opportunities.” Anything good will do
Shweta Tiwari, who is once again climbing top charts with the soaring TRP’s of her current Sony TV serial Parvarrish—Kuch Khattee Kuch Meethi, is proud to be associated with the television industry. “Bollywood industry is very well aware that the telly actors are doing well and they know that the television industry is getting bigger as well as better,” says Shweta. Just like Hollywood, there is a silver lining for the Indian actors also, where the audience will just want to see good acting whether on TV or in films. “I’m an actor and I have been in this industry for the past 18 years, so whether in movies or television I want to just do good work,” adds Shweta. Shweta is busy with her serial, events and commercials as well as her upcoming Urdu movie Saltanat.
Work is the winner
Ragini Khanna, who has just finished hosting Jhalak Dikhlaja Season 5, says more than recognition as a particular character one plays on television it’s one’s acting that brings you work. “It was not only by playing the role of Suhana for Sasuraal Genda Phool that I earned fame; prior to that also I did many shows in which I gave my best. So it’s not any particular show that got me Bollywood offers,” says Ragini. She adds, “I want to make it clear that even if I foray into Bollywood, which I already have, I will never bid goodbye to television, which has literally taught me so many things.”

Numero uno in popularity
Manpriya Singh Un, dos, tres, Un pasito pa'delante, Maria… a decade back, Ricky Martin had everyone cram the Spanish lyrics. His music may not strictly render the Latin beats, but the Puerto Rican singer remains a Latin idol. Latin, also referred to as Latin American music, the genre encompassing rhythms and styles that either originated in or relate to Latin America. It’s a genre which is not limited to the likes of salsa, tango, bachata, reggaton; and it simply rocks. Hall of fame
The Latin scene is ruled by the likes of Shakira, who when she sings, people get up to listen. Her Whenever, Wherever remains in the top league of Latin pop songs of 2000s. Enrique Iglesias is said to have the most number one songs in the hot Latin list. Selena, the Spanish singer, is counted in the top leagues of Latin artists. Among the greatest Latin jazz songs and artists includes Songs For My Father, an album by Horace Silver. The album was inspired by the trip that Silver made to Brazil. The title song remains a jazz standard. Among the past decades’ Latin pop, someone mentions Gasolina by Daddy Yankee, Ahora Quien by Marc Anthony. The Ketchup Song by Las Ketchup is something everyone would be able to recollect and give a vehement nod to. The list of the most influential and popular artists and even the songs remains an arbitrary one. Youngster’s take It includes the music style generated from Latin countries such as salsa, tango, bachata, apart from the mainstream genres such as Latin pop, rock, jazz and hip hop. Besides the derived music genres from the United States and Europe, some popular styles of music with a distinctly Latin flavour includes the likes of Mexican hip hop, Cuban, Latin jazz. “Latin artists are often confused with the artists who originate from Latin America. Rather than the artists who give Latin music. Nevertheless, since it incorporates a wide range of music styles that includes sub genres like salsa, bachata, tango, it remains one of the most influential genre,” opines Nikhil Pupneja, base guitarist with a Ludhiana-based band. Like wise, the Latin songs are confused with Latin lyrics, instead of the Latin music. No wonder, a Latin dance party must-play list includes a couple of Spanglish numbers by popular artists. manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Talk it out
An engineer-turned-writer N Chandramouli is out with his book Decoding Communication. The CEO of Comniscient Group, Chandramouli hit upon the idea to write the book when he found there were no perfect theories for effective communication.
On Saturday, in Chandigarh with his new book, Chandramouli couldn’t emphasise the significance of right communication—be it relationships, work or business. And, finding most theories more creative than right, he poured into research, his practical experience as communication consultant to global companies DHL, Henkel, Botox and more. Three years of sifting through the materials, he is out with Decoding Communication. Encompassing all about communication, what should be done, why it should be done and how, is what this 250-page book deals with. The crux of the matter is trust. “For any communication to be effective, trust plays the most significant part,” says the author. And, there are ways to build that. Creating the capacity to trust, showcasing the right intent and then demonstrating the competence to deliver what’s promised are the three basic steps according to him. Writing the book has not just given him a model that supports him in his field of communication businesses (he is author of Brand Trust Report, India Study 2011 and 2012) but also helps better relationships. Various factors like outward appearance and body language which play a role in effective communication along with some practical tips, is what this book, priced at Rs 399, offers.

Rare treat
It is not always sad to pull out a leaf from the chapters of past and it is not always a lonely walk down the memory lane. Siddarth Bajaj, a student of marine biologist is enjoying the sheer bliss of pulling out the rare items collected by his grandfather late Col Surendra Singh Bakshi and
putting them up for an exhibit at Sector- 43 residence.
This young man, who has grown watching how his grandfather used to collect rare items after his retirement from the Army, knows every single thing can be traced back to its origin. A series of lithographs in copper plate engravings depicting scenes of India in the mid 1800’s, mixed lot of world stamps, large size engravings of the British Raj, ancient maps of Asia, India and Far-East are items that Siddarth has put up from his grandfather’s
collection. “I want to keep his collection in rotation so that it can reach out to people who are interested in looking back and marveling over the facts in history.” Erotica stamps picked from the flea market of France, stamps of birds, flowers, a print of the Afghan war depicting a street from Peshawar, map of India (1856) mounted on raw silk for Rs 25,000, original double glass framed clipping of Hillman advertisement are some of the interesting things which are on display and sale as well. For Siddarth, the exhibition could have been nowhere else but at their residence. “Every object has a feel to it, and I wouldn’t want to put it on display at a fancy place.” Priced as low as Rs 100 (and above) you can pick some interesting pieces collected by Col Bakshi when he was traveling across

A model life
Model turned actor Kuki Grewal is a popular face on television. She wants to become an actor full-time now and has also forayed into plays. She talks about herself, acting, travelling and more. Wanderlust I love travelling and I have been to many countries. This year I went to Spain and Portugal. I have been to Australia, most of Europe, most of India, all of the Far-East, and America. Every year, I want to travel twice to some place I have not been to. Acting bug Acting has just happened to me. I feel so privileged to be part of plays with established actors such as Mandira Bedi, Darshan Jariwala, and Vikram Kocchar. The director called me and I did a reading and I was selected. I was so excited and also a little nervous at the rehearsals. It changed me as a person. I learnt so much. I feel this is a great debut for me and a milestone because I am getting to do such a fantastic play. I had fun too. I like the movies that are made these days because they are script and performance driven. One of my absolute favourites is Kahaani. Eat ‘n’ work I work out and swim about five to six times a week. I eat a good amount of food and do not restrict myself because I am a foodie. I do not have a sweet tooth but I love junk food and street food that is spicy and yummy. So I indulge myself whenever I feel like.

Fitness Flexibility comes naturally to me. My weight is 50 kg from the last ten years because I exercise and diet a lot. I do many dance forms so my body stays supple and strong. I do yoga for my spiritual reasons. I work for eight hours on an average because of dancing. We start with yoga, then Kalaripayattu, and then dance. I do yoga for two hours even when I am travelling. Foodie! I am a vegetarian and take four light meals a day. I drink a lot of water and tea. For protein, I have egg whites four times a week. Breakfast is cereal or corn flakes with fruits, dry fruits and milk, or ragi porridge. Tea makes me feel active. I snack on fruits or biscuits. I have a carbohydrate rich lunch. It’s khichdi or roti, sabzi and salad, and another two cups of tea to wash it down. Dinner is light again. If I feel hungry late at night, I have some yogurt topped with honey. I hate low-fat milk. I’d rather have whole milk instead of diluting it with paani. I prefer sugar over artificial sweeteners. Mood elevation Dancing lifts my mood anytime. Even running helps to clear the mind because you focus only on running after a while. Passion Dancing is my passion and I have been doing it for years now. I have been programmed to dance. Natural food I love the fact that I have grown up on natural food. I have water, lemon juice and coconut water to quench my thirst. I eat a lot of ragi and unpolished brown rice, which is very healthy and should also become popular with the masses.

A lesson to remember
English Vinglish Starring: Sridevi, Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, Priya Anand and Sujata Kumar
English Vinglish is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light-hearted yet touching transformational journey of Shashi (Sridevi). Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self-assured and confident woman. Sridevi all the way Kudos to Sridevi for such an excellent comeback! She is the fulcrum of the movie as the movie completely rests on her brilliant performance. The story is of every common man who faces problems speaking English. I can any day watch this movie. Anmol Singh, software engineer Simply superb Sridevi’s character is very simple yet she has managed to put in her charisma into it and made her act flawless. The plot is also very plain so one can just relax and appreciate good performances. Ramit Sakuja, bank employee Great package I just loved the music and most importantly the performances. All women can relate to the well-scripted story and it makes one emotional. Every character has played their part so well. Jyoti Sharma, housewife Kismet Love Paisa Dilli
Starring: Vivek Oberoi, Mallika Sherawat, Neha Dhupia and Ashutosh Rana Set in Delhi, Kismet Love Paisa Dilli is a one night madcap story of Lokesh (Vivek Oberoi) and Lovina (Mallika Sherawat). Lokesh is a college-going middle class guy and Lovina is the girl next door, who miss their last metro back home and a series of ‘on the edge moments’ occur through the night where Lokesh and Lovina run across Delhi on this roller coaster of a night from cold streets to glitzy farm house parties to gradually falling in love. Complete waste Vivek Oberoi fails to impress. It is such an intolerable movie which makes no sense. It is difficult to sit through even the first half of the movie. Total waste of money and time. Manav Goel, student, Panjab University Unbearable two It is a sheer waste of time and money. Mallika Sherawat’s overacting makes the movie much more intolerable along with Vivek Oberoi’s lousy acting. Nandini Seth, student, GGDSD College Cheap thrills The dialogues are rather cheap and crass and have nothing unusual about them. Overall I just liked the music but definitely not the movie. Jannat Kaur, student, MCM College (As told to Sabia Talwar) |

The year ahead
If your birthday is October 6...
Do not waste your time in criticising others, as it may affect your health. You will make good money, but try not to let it slip through your fingers. Those seeking emotional reassurances may find their elders coming to their aid. You are going to make your life worthy by giving pleasure and forgiving past mistakes. You'll have to pursue someone who can help you with work. Adopting a cool, indifferent attitude will result in a lost opportunity. If you are in a relationship, take this opportunity to do something kind for your lover. Relieving your partner of a dreaded chore will win their undying gratitude. Then no matter how busy you are over the next couple days, getting something new on your plate has a highly motivating effect. You'll wish to comment on a co-worker's attitude - you'll find this person too talkative and rather unproductive. Try not to say something you would regret. If you've only just joined a firm, you'll get your revenge on someone who hasn't made much effort to make you feel welcome. Family can help deliver good luck and pleasant surprises at your doorstep, but you will be unjustly blamed for the actions of another. If you back off now, the situation will cool off soon. If you openly complain that things are not fair, you will only bring yourself unwanted attention and make the scene hotter. You may be called upon to fix a number of things, especially when you are good at it. Fatigue and other minor diseases are in store, so be careful. Mood: Cheerful. Compatible signs: Capricorn, Taurus Lucky colours: Rosy-brown, Magenta Lucky days: Tuesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 8, 32, 44, 48, 90 Mona Singh [October 6, 1980], who shares the cake with you today, played the lead role in the serial Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi.
