Theatre thespian Atul Kumar, a product of many influences, feels each one informs and inspires him
A life well-staged
Nonika Singh

Never mind the play Piya Behroopiya that theatre thespian Atul Kumar brought to the Chandigarh Theatre Festival was based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Or the fact that he has just returned from South Africa after enacting out a solo performance of Nothing Like Lear once again inspired from King Lear. The actor-director confesses that he has no particular fascination for Shakespeare. Sure the bard is timeless, “So much so that when I read him, it talks of here and now, even though I am acutely conscious of the fact that it was written in 16th century.” In fact, it’s the themes of Shakespeare’s writing that engage him more than his structure or technique.

Theatre, anyway, feels Kumar is not about following any particular shaili. So to those who think Piya Behroopiya had shades of nautanki, all he would say is that he doesn’t approach any play with any preconceived design or notion. Ideally, he would prefer to work on an idea rather than a script. But even when he does take on a written script, the idea is to make it his own. And in the process of owning up the script it can become anything, even a mime. Or a musical as has been the case with Piya Behroopiya, which found a more than receptive response even at London’s Globe Theatre. He shares that he was more than apprehensive about staging the play in London with 75 per cent of his audience being white. However, the play which he calls neither an adaptation nor a translation, “But somewhere in-between,” penned by Amitosh struck a chord. He reasons, “Probably because they knew the play so well or beyond the cultural specificity, we were able to arrive at a universal appeal…. the feedback was tremendous.”

“At the end of the day”, he asserts “What matters is not what elements you have used but how you amalgamate it all to make it meaningful and truthful.” Same impressions, he observes, can inspire two different artists and the result can be awe-inspiring or devastating. As his life has spanned many nations, a host of influences have gone into the making of him and his theatre group. At JNU, he studied French literature. Thereafter, he learnt Kathakali and Kalaripayattu. After dabbling in absurd theatre of French playwrights and some, “Unexciting theatre in the US”, he went on to do (still does) plays under the direction of Rajat Kapoor. More than a decade ago, he formed his theatre group, which he insists is not a repertory but a company where each actor, like stand-up comedian Mantra of Comedy Circus Ka Naya Daur, is free to do what he or she wants to. He adds, “When they move in different directions they bring in new energies.” Among his multiple forays he can’t say which one has impacted him more. He smiles, “Six years back my daughter was born, I consider that the strongest influence on me.”

Let winds from all directions shape you— perhaps the philosophy behind his theatre residency project, which he calls a laboratory of sorts on the lines of Veenapani Chawla's Adishakti in Pondicherry. He shares, “It’s a creative space where artists (not just theatre artists) come together to bounce off ideas.” But then theatre for him is not just a linear narrative, rather, “A very broad term that incorporates many layers, nuances and ideas.” A product of myriad impressions, his theatre can be no different.

Going solo

A director who is an equally consummate actor, theatre virtuoso Atul Kumar, however, doesn’t care to direct himself. Among his many stellar performances is the solo act in Nothing Like Lear, directed by close friend Rajat Kapoor. He avers, “Doing a solo is a terrifying experience. The spotlight is on you and you alone and if you slip, you slip.”

From hand puppets to semi- sculptural ones, Ishara Puppet Theatre has weaved magic on stage

Team memebrs of Kalapataru
art above all: Team memebrs of Kalapataru

Art transcends boundaries…and this enthusiastic bunch from Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust has witnessed it many a times. In city, to be a part of Chandigarh Theatre Festival on Sunday with play Kalpataru, they shared their take on Puppet Theatre, travelling around the world and working in close association with iconic Dadi Pudumjee.

Love for stage

Pawan Waghmare, Vivek Kumar, Kumari Yadav, Mohammad Shameem and Neetu, the Kalpataru team got associated with theatre right in their school and landed up in Ishara through auditions. “The association has been so enriching that this has become our life,” says Pawan.

Puppet love

Puppets have been used as adornments for dance and theater for long, and Ishara is happy for that. “Puppet productions have now been a part of school, college as well as National School of Drama productions. Welham Girls, Dehradun’s annual production is a full-fledged puppet show this year,” says Vivek. But it bothers them when the art is not used at its best. “Puppets for film Drona were made by our Kapil Sir but sadly were not used to their potential,” he adds.

Global world

Puppetry has been doing well around the world. Ishara holds annual International Festival and so do other countries. “Where else would you find countries like Israel, Ireland, Afghanistan and USA together, they were participating in one of our festival,” says Shameem with a glint of pride. The intermingling of cultures has been a rich mutual exchange.

Way to go

Why isn’t puppetry being developed as compared to other art forms in India? Says Pawan, “I feel because puppetry was practiced by the lower castes so it didn’t get much support.” But things are changing. If only the puppeteers get their due! “You know people kiss Puran Bhatt’s (renowned puppeteer of Rajasthan) hands when they see his skill,” says Vivek who hopes that this puppeteer also gets honoured with Padma Shri.

Comparative analysis

This group is humble enough to admit that puppetry is a well-developed art form in other countries. “Sometimes when we see some foreign productions, we realise that they have already reached the heights we are strivinmg to obtain,” admits Shameem but also says in the same breath, “They are also left amazed at our productions.”

On iconic guide

This young group has had their ‘Oh, it’s Dadi Pudumjee’ moments in initial days at Ishara, but, with time they are used to him and his style of working. “He is very gentle, forthcoming and energetic at his age,” they chorus, “You know he’s again been elected UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette - International Puppetry Association) president and also honoured with Padma Shri,” adding enthusiastically.

Apart from looking forward to their newest production for Delhi Youth Festival, they aim to take puppet theatre to newer heights.

The perfect mix

Ishara puppet productions are versatile. They combine traditional art forms with contemporary. Kalapataru depicts the relationship between a boy and tree. Theme is our mindless plundering of nature. Old tales of Vikram and Betaal breathe life on stage as do the newer themes like substance abuse or HIV in the deft theatre hands.

The remix king
Jasmine Singh

He doesn't need a strong agenda or a forum to bring down the house, neither is he dependent on a celebrity to walk hand in hand with him to his console, Dj Suketu can create an uproar with his foot tapping remixes. All he needs to do is spin Bin Tere Sanam, scratch it a bit, and the crowd couldn't stop rhyming their steps to him. In Chandigrah to perform at 10 Downing Street, Altius the first thing that you notice about Suketu is his lean figure. "My weight has never gone beyond 63 or 66 kgs, a jog every morning is what helps me maintain my weight," he adds. It is weight that he likes to control, but music...

"I was nearly ten when I was introduced to music, and as the cliché goes there was no looking back. I am hooked to music day and night," adds the Dj who is known for his Bollywood remixes. "Cinema gives movies and music, both go hand in hand. It is the music that I survive on," he smiles quickly taking us through the list of Bollywood songs he has remixed. "I am trying to sound modest, I really don't have track of the songs!" Suketu an award winning producer won the best remix award at MTV Immies and best Dj award in India by Zee Entertainment Enterprise.

A remix version is something that the die- hard- original-version-fans don't really enjoy. For Suketu, who has produced music for numerous Hindi films it is an art. "A song finds a new life in beats and sounds. The real flavour is only garnished a bit and served to the people who love to dance and move on it to no end," adds Suketu who can't get away from French fries.

It would however be a sin to keep this celebrity Dj away from music. "I performed at my first private party in 96, and not a day has passed when I haven't taken a track and jazzed it up," says the king of Bollywood remixes. Suketu tours with music far and wide and his currently working on his latest track Dilbar mere. "It is just not possible to stay away from Bollywood music. No matter how many genres we explore, Bollywood is here to stay forever," he adds.

Recently DJ Suketu played at a party hosted for Tom Cruise by Anil Kapoor . "It was great, the party was attended by the entire film fraternity like Aamir Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai. When I saw them enjoy my music, I could pat my back and say it is all about music, remix and original both."

Dj Suketu is working on the much-awaited single Dilbar Mere (feat. Kamran Ahmed). "This will feature some of the best known artists, Abbey, Alam, Anusha Manchanda, Anushka Dandekar, Arjun, Chin2, Javed Ali, Manasi Scott, Mustafa Zahid, Sophie Choudary and Sukhbir," he says. Wait till he rocks the party again!

Structured look
Ashima Batish

A celebrity client list often reflects how big a designer is. In Kanika Saluja's case, names likes Paris Hilton, Rihanna, Mischa Barton and Jenny McCarthy vouch for her status in the fashion industry not just in India but also in the international market. She is known for using a lot of metal embellishments. This is what she says-

What's in: The season will be all about balancing structure with comfort. Whatever be the base fabric, unconventional surface texturing will rule the fashion scene. Metal embellishments will make a strong comeback.

What's out: Excess is a mess. Silhouettes minus the emphasis on structure should be given a miss. Volume might be important but garments without shape will be taken out from the wardrobes.

Colour count: Colours like charcoal, navy, cocoa, deep forest green, burberry and electric blue will dominate this season. There is an ample choice when it comes to the colour palette this time.

Next is what: My next collection is about architectural shapes and wearability.

Party couture: Nothing works better than an embellished sheath dress for someone who is fit. Someone who is plump should opt for an embellished yoke flair gown.

Style smart: Right now Sonam Kapoor is the ultimate definition of the most stylist celebrity in India.

Leading the fashion: I look up to Balenciaga for silhouettes and Jean Paul Gautier for his concepts, style and aesthetics.

On Indian fashion scene: It is doing extremely well, yet there is more to understand about fashion to take it to the next level.

Punjabi Tadka
Like a dream
Jasmine Singh

He wouldn’t ask God for more as the biggest gift for him is music, and Punjabi singer and actor Preet Harpal is getting a chance to live it to the fullest. His song Maa pey kehndey judge bann topped the Punjabi chartbuster, and being played in every discotheque. As an actor, Preet showed versatility in the Punjabi flick Sirrphire, and today he wants to explore more of life and his talent. He gets candid.

An actor or singer

Both. I can’t say which one I enjoy the most. I have been singing for a long time, so obviously I like it. But if you ask me what I am good at,well I guess both. Yes, there are plenty I want to explore as an actor.

Song I love singing

One song that I like to sing invariably is Munda aitki BA vich fail ho gaya.

Good ol’ days

I have done graduation from Gurdaspur. I was an introvert boy and I would just keep to myself. I never thought I could be a successful artist one day.

Stage fright

The first time I got on the stage was when I was in college. I was so scared. I was supposed to sing the famous Punjabi song Jagga, but I started singing Bagga. Everyone had a hearty laugh.

Yours sincerely

The one singer that I have admired always is Kishore Kumar. I always admire good compositions whether it is Tu hi rey or Maa hundi hai maa. I am open to good music, it doesn’t matter if some new or old singer has sung it.

Fan mail

I can’t ignore the love that my fans have given me, both girls and boys. I don’t use Facebook much, I like going on the fan page instead. I interact with all, a simple hi and hello and a general message.

Jam in

I have worked with celebrities like Rishi Rich, Hard Kaur and Apache Indian. Now, I want to collaborate with Britney Spears. It would be a dream come true!

Cast me in

I am working on my next project, Don’t Worry opposite Jaspinder Cheema, I think I will get better with time and with every movie I do.

Before the show

It is simple and basic—a light meal. I have a choice to pick from so many clothes that I generally end up getting confused.

Punj Spice on at Park Plaza, Ludhiana brings the best of dishes from the royal kitchen
Delicacies from Deccan
Poonam Bindra

The cuisine which has left an indelible mark on the history and culture of the Indian sub-continent is brought on the table of the food connoisseurs of Ludhiana. Punj Spice at Park Plaza, Ludhiana hosts a Hyderabadi food festival, Dawat-E-Nizam, bringing in the flavours of the Deccan with the Dum-Pukht delicacies they are famous for.

The Nizami Zaika, has been specially incorporated by chef Mansoor Ali, who informs us that, "the key difference between North Indian cuisine and the Hyderabadi one is the presence of dry coconut tamarind, peanuts and sesame seeds in its preparations."

While relishing Pathar Ka Gosht with Kache Ghost Ki Biryani, Reena and Vinod Mehra, a couple, remarks, "Actually one can feel the influence of the Muslim culture in this cuisine." The slow dum cooking that happens in sealed earthen pots is what seals the flavours.

Shares executive chef, Park Plaza, Rajinder Sareen, "This cuisine emphasises the careful use of ingredients while cooking them in the right degree and manner." Remarks a regular visitor at the place, of the Fried Machhi, "It is different from our regular fried fish because of its crispy crushed pepper corn flavour." With so many gourmands turning vegetarians, no cuisine can be complete without a good vegetarian fare. For them the star attractions are the Veg Seekhs, coconut flavoured Nizami Handi, Bhaghare Baingan and not to miss the yummy Arbi Ka Salan. "We really look forward to such food festivals and with the nip in the air such dishes are really to be relished," quips the Saxena family enjoying a family occasion. The qawwaalis playing in the background create a perfect ambience while reminding one of an era gone by.

Chef Mansoor Ali has also added some new dishes — Tamatar Ka Kut and Dahi Ke Kofte for the veggies and Chippe Ka Ghosht and Methi Murgh for the meat lovers.

The inevitable dessert too has been kept traditional. The very humble lauki has been transformed into Gil-e-Tirdaus, then there's Sewian Ke Musafir and Double Ka Mitha. All of this and more at Rs 799 per head or an A la carte selection. That's royalty on your platter for a reasonable price!

Listen to this lullaby

Barfi! released recently and is on its success ride. Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D' Cruz have played their roles so well that the movie is a magical ride and the music too is wonderful, especially the track Aashiyan, which has childlike and chirpy lyrics. The lyrics have been written by Swanand Kirkire and the music is composed by Pritam. The vocals are by Shreya Ghoshal and Nikhil Paul George.

Sweet & simple

This track takes me to a dreamland of hope and aspirations with a delightful lullaby feel. I just love the sweet tune and I'm addicted to this track. It has such simple and positive lyrics which are meaningful as well.

Himani Mehta, student, MCM College

Serene yet playful

It is a serenely pitched number which makes you fall in love with this track. Shreya Ghoshal's vocals add a sober touch to this number while Nikhil Paul George's playfully rendered voice adds the desired enthusiasm. It is an innocent track which impresses with its soothing lyrics.

Tina Kumar, housewife

Cheerful mood

Shreya Ghoshal has this sparkling tone that just adds so much to the song. Also, Nikhil Paul George's smooth vocals give it another texture. It is a song that lifts up one's mood for sure.

Moreover, she did an implied nude scene as well in which she tore off her clothes in front of people. Well this beauty definitely has the guts. — HRM

End of a love story?

They never declared that they are dating each other and the reason might be they themselves were unsure about their unbalanced relationship. Their relationship was very fickle. Finally, the low-key couple Sonam Kapoor and Punit Malhotra called off their relationship, the reason best known to them but it is also heard that differences created since they both are busy in their work and failed to give each other time.

Punit Mahotra is busy with directing his next film and Sonam with her new project Raanjhana. They both are busy to spend time with each other and this might have created a crack in their relationship. “Punit is busy with his next film and Sonam is shooting for Raanjhana,” said a source.

The rift came into forefront when Punit and Sonam were heard fighting over phone. An eyewitness revealed that Punit repeatedly disconnected someone’s phone calls but failed to guess the person on the other side. When checked properly, he came to know that it was Sonam who has been calling Punit continuously. When the director finally received the call, both indulged into a heated argument.

It was evident to everyone at the dinner table. “Although I don’t know about their tussle, it was very disturbing to see them fight over the phone,” said an eyewitness. Sonam and Punit’s affair started on the set of I Hate Luv Storys but failed to survive.

Hrithik Roshan, a perfect fit

Tom Cruise is a handsome global phenomenon, the biggest movie star in the world. So who better than Hrithik Roshan to fill in his shoes for the Indian remake of Knight and Day? Frankly, we would not have minded if Shahid Kapoor played his part because he is cute and boyishly charming. We are sure Hrithik Roshan is going to have a blast shooting this film and will make it a big hit.

Interestingly, Knight and Day was deemed a flop in the United States though internationally it did well and is a regular on the television circuit because people want to watch it. The Indian remake is an official one and will be directed by Siddharth Anand. Hrithik Roshan signed for it recently. This will be his third action film after Agneepath and Krrishh 3.

Filming will begin only next year as locations are being scouted at the moment. The film is about a spy on the run so it will shot on snazzy locations across the globe. Though it is a remake some twists and turns will be added. This is Siddharth Anand's first action film and his first film since Anjaana Anjaani. We hope he will be able to handle it. The female lead is yet to be decided because it has be someone with Cameron Diaz's spontaneity and screen charisma. Her character was that of a ditzy blonde. We think they could choose from Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Nargis Fakhri. We think Anushka Sharma would be the ideal person to play this role.

Remake rush: Hrithik Roshan

Time for some action

Having begun his Bollywood journey as a child artiste, Kunal Khemu has grown up doing all kinds of roles, albeit those with action. Now, the star has been signed by T-Series to star in an action-oriented film to be directed by Vikram Bhatt. The 29-year-old, who will be playing the lead in the yet untitled action thriller to be produced by T series, signed the film because it has a unique plot. “The film is a thriller but very heavy on action so it's going to be a first for me in many ways. The idea is very unique and new, but still fits into the genre of an action thriller. It's an on-the-run film and is going to be very fast paced," Kunal said in a statement.

Bhatt, who has known Kunal since his 1993-film Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke wanted to work with him. The film is slated to go on floors in December or January and the female lead is yet to be cast. "I have admired Kunal right from the time that he was a kid and I was an assistant in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. The film that I am planning with him is a very ambitious action film. I have met him a couple of times to discuss the subject and his enthusiasm is addictive! We make a good team," Bhatt said.

Meanwhile, Kunal is hurrying to finish shooting of his next project Go Goa Gone so that he can sit and discuss his look in the action film.

A sweet recognition

Director Anurag Basu feels the selection of Barfi! as India's official entry to the Oscars in the foreign language film category is like an "icing on the cake".

Barfi! beat 19 other films to become India's representative at the 85th Academy Awards to be held in February, 2013. "We had not expected this kind of response to it - from Oscar nomination to box office collections to critical acclaim. All we knew is that we are making a special and a good film. I am numb, don't know how to react. I feel blessed,”said Basu

Barfi! released in India on September 14 and registered Rs 58.6 crores in its opening week at the box office. "It is a long way to go (in reference to Oscars). We are quite hopeful about the movie. All this will definitely give me more confidence but at the same time it will have an effect on my next film," he said. A romantic comedy, the film revolves around a happy-go-lucky person Barfi, played by Ranbir Kapoor, as he goes through love and heartbreak. Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic girl, while it also marks the Bollywood debut of southern star Ileana D'Cruz. —PTI

On the hit list

Dipika Samson aka Simar from Sasural Simar Ka feels there is no better way to have fun than catch up with friends and watch some good movies. Here she picks some flicks that she loves watching with her friends.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

I just love the way friendship between Shah Rukh and Kajol was shown in this movie. The credit goes to the actors Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani for their splendid performances. The songs, mood, romance all elements came together wonderfully in this film. The essence of this film is so strong that we all love the movie even today.

Band Bajaa Baraat

The entire movie was a masterpiece so I can’t point out just one thing that I liked about this flick. Ranveeer Singh and Anushka Sharma looked like they were made for each other. Their chemistry, love and friendship all seemed so natural. The Delhi flavour too was a nice touch.

Salaam Namaste

This movie was so cute and I loved the emotional aspect as well as the comedy. The locations where the movie was shot were beautiful. Australia was spectacular and pristine. Preity looked smashing as did Saif.

Hum Tum

I love the movie because of Rani and Saif who acted so well. This is another cute love story that I can keep watching. The characters grew with time and that was nice to see them become mature. The look and style was \awesome.

Dil Chahta Hai and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Though both these movies are guy flicks I loved the bond between the friends. The love and the warmth between the friends make them extremely watchable. There is something wonderful about such films that engage you. These movies are such that you can watch them again and again.

Juggling act

Rukhsar Rukhsar who is seen in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge will now be doing a film as well. She has signed a movie that stars Rajeev Khandelwal, Gauhar Khan among others and the shooting is expected to start soon.
