Nausheen Ali Sardar, Anuj Saxena and Joe Baath, in Chandigarh to announce their respective television shows, share their views on telly & much more
Take from real life
Sabia Talwar

A Punjabi channel relaying Hindi shows is surely debatable. The reasons come from Nausheen Ali Sardar, Anuj Saxena and Joe Baath, who were in Chandigarh to announce their respective shows on the channel Spark Punjabi.

Enthusiastic multi-tasker

Television actor Anuj Saxena ,who rose to fame with Ekta Kapoor's serial Kkusum, is back to square one with anchoring a reality-based show titled Pyaar Ya Dehshat. Says Anuj, "I have always been multi-tasking; whether it be acting or producing under my company banner Maverick Productions or managing at Elder Pharmaceuticals." He is back after seven to eight years on television with his Kkusum co-star Nausheen Ali Sardar. "Pyaar Ya Dehshat is a crime-based show that deals with real love stories that have gone wrong for some reason or the other," reveals Anuj.

The show picks up real cases from the judiciary to which the public can connect to and be educated through the same.

We wonder what difference lies between acting in a daily soap and anchoring for a show like this one. "Life during daily soaps gets so much hectic because one is shooting literally round-the-clock months after months."

Commercialisation finds a friend in Anuj when he needs to smartly invest money as a producer. "At the end I'm here to earn profit and not to do any charity, so I rationally invest in serials and movies that I think will do well." So, his company produced the movie Aloo Chaat and also Devyani for the channel Star Pravah. He is producing Pyaar Ya Dehshat as well.

Beauty in distress

Nausheen Ali Sardar, who was the leading lady in the serial Kkusum, has been sort of unlucky when it comes to Bollywood but she still has high hopes. Says Nausheen, "I have done a few movies for Bollywood, which were not released." Deepal Shaw's Bangkok Blues with Irrfan Khan and Ranvir Shorey's Vivash with Lucky Ali, Rajpal Yadav and Jackie Shroff are a couple of movies among them. "Although I had lost all hopes in Bollywood, one fine day when I received a call from Vikram Bhatt's office for Three Love Lies and Betrayal, I thought someone is playing a prank on me. But something went wrong with this movie as well; it released but did not garner the success it deserved."

We wonder how the lady tackled everything. "I believe a lot in destiny, so what has to happen has to happen. I love acting and will continue with it regardless of anything."

Nausheen was last seen in NDTV Imagine's Beend Banuga Ghodi Chadunga where she was playing a mother to three children. "Now that's the unreal part of Indian television industry — sometimes one has to play a role ahead of your real age. And I can't do stuff that I cannot relate to, so I quit the show." At the moment she will be anchoring Pyaar Ya Dehshat along with Anuj Saxena and she has also stepped into producing plays. "I love doing theatre and the latest play was Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karu with Asif Sheikh.

Kya Baath hai!

Yet another reality show being put forward by the channel is BIG Punjaban, which is a talent-based reality show that offers housewives a platform to showcase their creativity. Joe Baath, who will host the show that enters its second season, says, "After participating in Master Chef India and having done quite a lot of Punjabi shows, I was pretty excited to host a show that brings housewives to the forefront."

The debate goes strong with Joe where he justifies that the audience in Punjab actually speaks Hindi and is up for viewing the same. "Nowadays, a Punjabi channel means that only promotions of music videos and Punjabi movies will be telecast, so it will take some time for a new channel to break the ice."

The famous Piccadilly theatre in the city gets a make-over…
Manpriya Singh

The newly opened gymnasium of the Piccadilly Square
The newly opened gymnasium of the Piccadilly Square

Once upon a time, the Piccadilly Theatre in Chandigarh was something of a Friday street; a landmark for giving directions to places in the sector. Then the mall culture happened and a deluge of multiplexes followed. But cramped space was something Aditya Nath Sharma, MD, Piccadilly Square wasn’t comfortable with. The cinema hall gives way to the revamped Piccadilly Square.

He shrugs, “We have even sacrificed the commercial space to retain its commodious character.” That’s not where the claim to fame ends. “There is another thing in which we have an edge over others. The triple basement takes care of the parking concerns still prevalent at other such places.” Their count is pegged at as many as 300 cars at one go. He adds, “Then there is also additional space for 150 cars. I also wasn’t happy with the parking scene at other retail outlets and multiplexes.”

Over to the upper floors; comprising as much as 48,000 square feet of retail space, three screens, a pool and a gym! Do they need a USP still? “We are better placed than anybody as far as the location of the property goes. It’s in the centre of the city.” KFC, Burger King, US Organics, Lyons, are some brands that have already made way into the property. As for others that are yet to venture, “I will make sure only high-end names make their way here. We are not interested in labels that can be found everywhere.” The spacious interiors concept extends to the rest-rooms. While the three screens were already filled with the clamour of the audience at any other screening, there is something that catches the eye. A small separated seating for a limited number of people.

Box, shall we say? “This practice was there in earlier cinemas, including ours. I’m sure there must be many missing out on this concept. Boxes aren’t there anywhere; moreover, I wanted to retain this practice.” Strictly for private viewing, each box has a seating for ten.

Gavie Chahal and Neeru Bajwa starrer Punjabi movie Pinky Moge Wali is a right mix of romance and comedy
Road to Moga slip
Jasmine Singh

Neeru Bajwa & Gavie Chahal
Neeru Bajwa & Gavie Chahal

It has started and it is sure to go a long way - Punjabi cinema’s fancy for romantic comedies (romcom in Bollywood terms) and interesting names! And the recent Punjabi flick to fall into both the categories is Pinky Moge Wali, which has been directed by debutant Vikram Dhillon. With the lead actors Gavie Chahal and Neeru Bajwa on a promotional tour in Chandigarh, we try to find out the zara hatkey factor in the movie.

Gavie Chahal is still basking in the limelight of Ek Tha Tiger, but the actor believes in performance, which will only come with more work. “I challenge my own work; with Pinky Moge Wali I plan to do the same,” says Gavie who plays Raj in the film. “He is a simple guy who offers to help Pinky reach Moga. It is an entertaining character and I have done justice to it.” Gavie would agree without any ifs and buts that all comedy movies are more or less the same. “It is the packaging that matters and creates the difference. While signing a project I take into account the script, director, banner and the production house,” adds the actor, who is open to all kinds of cinema.

He is also open to the question of only Punjabi singers making successful actors. “Punjabi singers are already stars and the audience likes them as well. But I think the people of Punjab like non-singers as actors as well.”

It is now time to look at the pretty lady whom Punjabi audience gave a thumbs-up from day one - Neeru Bajwa. The obvious question is not asked. Yes, she plays Pinky in Pinky Moge Wali. The interesting bit of news is, “Moga is my ‘nanka and I have been there virtually in all summer breaks,” she says. The movie wasn’t shot in Moga, however, the team plans a special thing for the place. “I play a girl who is looking for love and how she reaches Moga where her grandparents are,” adds Neeru, who looks at the project as a masala film.

She is also lucky when it comes to working with a hero of her choice! Neeru adds, “I would really want to work with Gurdass Maan ji; I have a huge crush on him. There can be no other like him,” says this stylish actress who wouldn’t just run around trees in Punjabi or western dresses. “A role has to be substantial,” she makes it clear.

Daughters are indeed a blessing of god. We catch up with a few ‘daughters only’ families...
On an affectionate note
Mona

Manmohan Singh and Aman Kaur with daughters Ishmehar and Hasrat

A daughter is a day-brightener and a heart-warmer... When one comes across families in everyday life that consider daughters as a gift of love, it’s hard to accept the fact that we are tackling a glaring gap in male-female sex-ratio. On a positive note, we track a few whose life has been more beautiful, more delightful and more satisfying with girls around.

Contrary to the usual, Sheena Harjani actually prayed for two daughters and her wish got fulfilled with Deveshi and Khushmita. “Today girls are at par with boys in every field; the only difference is that they are more caring,” says Sheena, who lives in Sector 8, Panchkula. Together with her husband Hitesh, she is taken by the attitude ‘born to win’, which she finds in her daughters.

Ishmehar (13) and Hasrat (11) are darlings of Aman Kaur and Manmohan Singh from Mohali. “My daughters complete me,” says Aman, who finds the best of friends in her girls. No longer does she need to go to a parlour for hair-styling for Ishmehar does it better than anyone in the vicinity, and the whole family finds the best nurse in the younger one who is extra-sensitive and caring if anyone in the family needs attention.

For Vinnie and Varun Kapoor, life has not only been perfectly normal but special with their daughter Svasti. “I feel daughters bond better with parents. With our little girl around, life has certainly been more precious,” says this entrepreneur in printing and packaging business.

The modern lifestyle take kids away from parents, be it boys or girls. Probably the only low Ramesh Kumar, from Sector 40, experienced with his only daughter was when he went to drop her for a MBA course to Delhi. “That evening probably was the only day I felt low for having only one child. She kept looking at us and we at her, for we knew now onwards that she was embarking on a new journey,” says Ramesh. That was five years back; Manu is working and married now. Says her father with pride, “Our life has been a smooth- sailing journey filled with love, care and affection that only a daughter can give.”

Closely knit unit and more of friends have been Suruchi, Divya and their parents Sharda and Anil Kaushik. “Be it going for long drives in the rain or travelling together or even squabbling over party deadlines, it has indeed been a wonderful journey with our daughters,” share the parents. Anil, Director General of Police, Punjab Police Housing Corporation, Chandigarh, remembers the time when his wife left for studies abroad and he took care of the girls for around six months, as the high in their journey. “It was altogether a different kind of bonding; sharing similar film music, sorting out the occasional differences that cropped up between them,” he recalls. With Suruchi now working and married in the US and Divya to be hitched in the coming month, Sharda is looking forward to another beginning, “I am going to make amends with my grandchildren with whatever I feel I couldn’t do with my girls.”

Woman power

There is a certain shift in the way Bollywood is treating its heroines. We take a look at their powerful female characters due to hit the screens…

Dream come true

Rani Mukerji is back in a crazy comedy Aiyya. She plays a Maharashtrian girl who has fantasies of her favourite actors before she gets married and her big dreams come true! Rani is reinventing herself and kudos to her for that!

Intense search

Though Talash is Aamir Khan's film, Rani Mukerji has a very strong and intense character in which she smiles only once. Kareena plays a hooker named Rosy and she has an affair with Aamir's character. The film deals with the complexity of relationships and other things.

Good versus bad

Esha Gupta is such a hottie that it is hard to take your eyes off her on screen. She plays a cop in Chakravyuh and is paired with Arjun Rampal. Another character is the Naxal one played by Anjali Patil. She seems impressive in the promo.

Two to tango

Of course, the King of Romance is back with two stars this time in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The film is a love triangle between him and smouldering Katrina and bubbly Anushka. The promo is awesome. We know that Anushka will nail her performance. Let us see what Katrina does besides looking gorgeous!

Queen’s comeback

English Vinglish is Sridevi's comeback and has been applauded at the Toronto Film Festival. It is about an Indian woman learning English in America and finding her identity again, even falling in love. Sridevi is supposed to be awesome. We are looking forward to it. —HRM

Weighty issues

Singer Demi Lovato says she has always felt overweight since she was very young, and that insecurity continues to stay with her till date.

"I remember being three years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach... and I remember thinking in my head, 'I wonder if one day this will ever be flat'," she said.

The 20-year-old, who has recently been named as the new ambassador of an anti-bullying campaign, was targeted at school as the girls used to tease her for her appearance.

She has also spent time in a rehabilitation clinic for treatment of her eating disorder and self-harming. — IANS

"Taylor is obsessed with Conor. She writes him love notes," a source said.

Swift has reportedly told friends that she loves dating Conor — because she loves the iconic political clan.

"She is obsessed with the family. Ted Kennedy Jr even calls her a Kennedy groupie. She is head over heels. Conor is a smart, sensitive guy. She says it is a fantasy come true.

Touching hearts with Barfi!

To many, it is surprising that Anurag Basu is the same man who helmed Kites and Barfi!. The director, who believes touching a hundred hearts is more important than Rs100 crore box-office takings, says versatility often turns out to be a disadvantage in the film industry.

"I personally feel it is a disadvantage to be a versatile director. Producers don't know where to place you because they don't know what next you will come up with," Basu said in an interview.

"(As a director, I feel) You live with a film for one to two years, and so it should be entertaining. Each and every project should excite you (as a filmmaker). For me, Barfi!was an altogether different experience," added the director, who has earlier given films as different as Gangster, Life... in a Metro and Kites.

Basu's latest offering Barfi! is drawing viewers to the theatres even a week after its release Sep 14. But he is not bothered whether it makes it to the Rs100 crore club or makes it through the shortlist of India's entry for the Oscar this year. His prime reward, he says, is touching viewers with his storytelling — something he has successfully achieved with the movie.

"I don't know about making Rs100 crore. But I feel it is more difficult to touch people's heart. From my film, I only want to touch hundreds or thousands of hearts and that's all that matters to me. Collection is not important for me," Basu said in the interview.

Barfi! is a moving tale of love beyond words — between a deaf and mute boy Murphy, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and an autistic girl Jhilmil, essayed effortlessly by the National award-winning actress Priyanka Chopra.

Southern actress Ileana D'Cruz, who has made her Bollywood debut with the movie, has also left a strong impact with her performance.

The film has been hailed in cinematic circles for its simplistic, yet heartwarming treatment. The viewers are expected to understand the nearly mute narrative through sign language and the beauty is that they do.

Filmmakers like Karan Johar and celebrities like megastar Amitabh Bachchan have praised the "masterpiece" and Basu is thankful to them all. Johar said he felt "talentless" after watching Barfi!

"It is really overwhelming when people praise your film. For me, Karan Johar's comment means a lot. Karan Johar's message was very humbling. It takes courage and you need a big heart to praise any other director. I also received some great messages, one from Big B as well. It feels great when people admire you," he said.

For now, the filmmaker plans to work on an English version of Barfi!, work on a "small film", and later, towards the winter season of 2013, he plans to roll out the Kishore Kumar biopic with Ranbir, on floors.

In the meantime, grapevine has it that Barfi! is one among 17 films shortlisted by the Film Federation of India to send for the Academy Award category of Best Foreign Language Film. Basu isn't sure his film will make it through.

"It is great, but I don't know how much of a chance do we have, because this year we have some wonderful films, not just from Bollywood but from regional cinema as well. "This is a good time for Indian cinema and it's going to be very tough for the jury members. I hope this time we will be lucky," he added. — IANS

Life’s good

Katie Holmes Actress Katie Holmes has been doing her best to stay fit following her split from Tom Cruise.

The 33-year-old has been working out at Barry's Boot Camp in New York City.

"Katie has been going to Barry's Boot Camp in New York City and she is working really hard. She looked great, well rested and seemed happy," a source said.

"She was dressed down and looked casual and comfy. Her hair was wavy and natural. During class, Katie was holding her own on the treadmill and was a fast sprinter! She was super friendly with the other girls next to her.

"One mentioned how she is the coolest, most down-to-earth celebrity she has ever met," the source added. — PTI

Mallika, who?

Mallika Sherawat, her PR company and the media floated rumours that she was having an affair with Antonio Banderas which led to a rift between him and his wife Melanie Griffith. There is no truth to that. Antonio just met her once, he is happy with Melanie. And ironically, his representatives said that they don't even know who Mallika Sherawat is. Oouch!

Tall claims: Mallika Sherawat

I'm a cry baby: Paltrow

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow admits she is a highly emotional person. The 39-year-old, who has an eight-year-old daughter, Apple and six-year-old son Moses with her rocker husband Chris Martin, reveals she regularly sees a therapist because of this.
" I cry maybe out of sadness or uncertainty,” she admitted. — IANS

John Abraham is back on Twitter. He will only talk about his bikes since he is a bike enthusiast and will not mention anything about his personal life with Priya Runchan.

Sweating it out

Tusshar Kapoor's PR company works very hard to keep him in the news all the time. He works out hard at his gym at home and is watching his diet. He is probably doing an action film next. Surprising that he still gets movies!

Siddharth felt odd shooting SOTY

Model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra says facing the camera for Dharma Productions' Student Of The Year (SOTY) was a little "odd" as he had worked as an assistant director with the banner before.

"With Dharma (Productions), it is a little odd, because the same people I worked with as an assistant director, and now I had to work with them as an actor," said Siddharth.

He says he was comfortable on the sets of the movie, and everyone was really warm. "I guess once we go outside we will realise how it really is. Here everyone is very warm," added the actor, who assisted Karan Johar on My Name Is Khan. — IANS

Voice matters

Sonam Kapoor
Sound check: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor who plays a 17-year-old in Varanasi for her character in Raanjhanaa is trapped in a strange dilemma. Her character can’t get older until a ghost voice is found for her.

The director Aanand Rai is looking for a singer who can express the 17-year old Sonam’s emotions as she falls in love for the first time.

“Aanand has got a beautiful song written by Irshad Kamil about a girl expressing her first love. A R Rahman has come up with a flawless melody. Now the hunt is on for a ghost voice for Sonam to express the tremulous exuberance of a girl in love for the first time,” says a source close to the director.

The problem is the director has put in an incredibly daunting reference point.  “Aanand wants a voice like Lata in Raj Kapoor’s  Bobby. In that film when Lata sang Aksar koi ladki iss haal mein/kisi ladke se solve saal mein/Jo kehti hai woh mujhe kehna hai… she sounded like a 16-year-old girl experiencing the ecstasy of love. And mind you, Lata was 40 when she sang for Bobby. Aanand wants the same feelings to emerge when Sonam sings of her first love,” adds the source.

While the perfect voice is awaited, Aanand will wait. “The portions where Sonam and Dhanush play 17 are nearing completion. Now the two actors are expected to take a five year leap to play 23. But Aanand has put the transition on hold until he finds the voice. Until then she stands frozen in time,” adds another source from Varanasi.

Adding to the voice crisis is the fact that composer Rahman never favours the director’s suggestions on the choice of playback singers.

Aanand sounds blissfully unconcerned in Varanasi. “I am in no hurry. I am shooting here at my own pace. My actors Dhanush and Sonam are with me. And we’re having fun. The voice that Rahman Saab and I are looking for may take time. That’s okay. We don’t need to rush. But I can proudly tell you my song about first love has been as beautifully written and composed as Mujhe kuch kehna hai in Bobby. Raj Kapoor Saab would have been proud of us,” he says.

Creating a buzz

The promo of Jab Tak Hai Jaan was launched recently on a video site and it has created a massive buzz!

The film truly carries the Yash Chopra stamp! Picturesque locales, intense poetry, enviable costumes, Shah Rukh Khan’s dimpled cheeks, his passionate lover avatar, teamed up with Katrina Kaif’s flawless beauty and Anushka Sharma’s effervescence — the trailer of Jab Tak Hai Jaan regales with all this.

The film is special for many reasons — it marks the return of Yash Chopra to direction seven years after Veer-Zaara, Shah Rukh’s trademark romantic avatar and it has Gulzar’s inimitable poetry, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman’s melodies and shots from Kashmir.

No dolling up for Zarine

Actress Zarine Khan has played a coy girl in a couple of films she has done so far. But it turns out that she’s quite a tomboy in real life. In fact, the actress herself admits that she’s a total tomboy and a complete speed junkie. She loves racing cars and bikes. She says that she would love to race some day. The actress, who doesn’t dress up like her on-screen characters, also confesses that she prefers wearing short dresses, shorts and t-shirts, instead of decking up.

Take-off point

Writers Farhad-Sajid who have written several films for Rohit Shetty and David Dhawan owe their careers to Salman Khan. They came from nowhere and met Salman Khan at a shooting and he recommended them to David Dhawan and their career took off!

Operation cover up

Paoli Dam created waves for her bold act in Hate Story and the film worked. She is doing another film with Vikram Bhatt on wife swapping. As of now, she is shooting for a film in which she plays a lawyer fighting a case of medical negligence. She will be covered in the movie directed by Suhail Tatari.

Choreographer by chance

Returning back to direction after My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar has added another feather to his cap. He has choreographed for the song Ratta Maar in his latest film Student of the Year.

It happened by chance, says Karan. “Since there was no choreographer available on that day, I thought I would do it for a day and get a choreographer subsequently. But I liked what I saw and decided to direct the whole song. The fact that it was a lip-sync song picturised on first-time actors was an added challenge.” However, Johar is clear that he would not take credit for directing hit song.

From the judge’s table

Kirron Kher, who has been associated with India’s Got Talent since its inception, is glad to be back on the show. Here, she talks about the new judges and the upcoming season of the popular show

What keeps you coming back to IGT?

This is the fourth year I am judging India’s Got Talent and I am familiar with the stage. I know what India’s Got Talent is capable of and that the responsibility for bringing the best is on our shoulders. This season, the bar has been raised and the quality of talent has tremendously increased. We have seen spectacular talent during the last few years. I cannot wait to take on this new journey of discovering some even better talent.

This year there are new judges. What are your thoughts on the same?

Yes, we have Karan Johar, Malika Arora Khan and Farah Khan. I am very happy with the judge’s panel this year. They are all my friends. It’s fun to work with them as they are outspoken, confident and talented. I am looking forward to a lot of fun on the sets.

Would you say you are the face of IGT as you are the emotional anchor of the show?

The show is very close to my heart. I connect with the content and am in touch with people from previous seasons. I take them home with me and I struggle with myself when I let someone talented go because they didn’t perform well in that particular round. I feel their pain and their joy affects me. I think the viewers who watch the show get equally emotionally affected.

Do you think most of the contestants come for 15 minutes of fame?

Some of them do. But most of them just want a platform to showcase their talent. Many of them who didn’t make it to the top five yet were so talented like this band from Kolkatta and dancers Dibakar and Sonia, etc got a whole load of work post the show. Even winners Prince, Shillong Band have gone places.

What else is in the pipeline?

I am doing a film called Azab Gazab Love and am discussing two more scripts.

Why haven’t you taken up any other show?

I get offers but nothing excites me as much as IGT. I love the show as it gives a superb platform to budding talent in our country. We get to see people from all corners of India, from far off places, forgotten folk traditions, fusion bands, gymnasts, acrobatics, dancing, singing and almost everything. This gives a lot of substance to the show.

Seriously inspired

Angad Hasija of Bidaai fame has been approached to play the lead in Film Farm's next on Life OK. The show will also star Maryaada girl Riddhi Dogra and will be different from family dramas seen on TV. Riddhi will play a girl hunting for her missing husband while Angad will help her. Kahaani anyone?

Making bold moves

The makers of Chhal are planning a different show. Touted to be on Star Plus this will be a detective show with bold storyline with Shraddha Nigam playing the lead with Anuj Saxena. Both the actors haven’t been on TV for a long time.

Retired hurt

Karanvir Bohra Karanvir Bohra got hurt while shooting his TV show Saubhagyavati Bhava on Life OK. During a stunt scene, his nose was hurt and he got a ligament tear. He has a plaster and won’t be shooting for the next two days.

Going the Bigg way

Kushal Tandon of Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai fame has been approached to do Bigg Boss but as the going is great for the actor he doesn’t want to rock the boat and has passed up on the offer.

Comfort zone: Kushal Tandon
