World Literacy Day celebrated

The Universal Group of Institutions, Lalru organised a function to mark World Literacy Day on the college campus yesterday. Dr Gurpreet Singh, chairman, Universal Group of Institutions, Lalru, presided over the event.

In his address, he said that being literate is fundamental to an individual's ability to participate in society and to understand important public issues. —TNS

Institute organises freshers' party

Banur, September 22
Gurukul Vidyapeeth organised a fresher’s party for all the new students with the support of the second year students of the institute. The faculty and students participated in the function with enthusiasm. The party included a welcome speech by the chairman of Gurukul Vidyapeeth, CA Manmohan Kumar Garg.

He said: “Such programs are organised so as to generate a feeling of fraternity among seniors and juniors. Miss and Mr Fresher contests were also organised on the occasion.—TNS

Patiala college holds Indo-Japanese interactive meet

The Department of Biosciences, Khalsa College, Patiala, organised an International Indo-Japanese Interactive Meet on "Biotechnology and Environment" at the college today.

Dr Saito from the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Ritsumeikan, gave an overview of the selenium projects going on in the university. He encouraged the students of the department to immerse themselves in research work and pursue to it with consistency, passion and dedication. He said that Japanese work culture is renowned and it should be followed by people all over the world. He also expressed joy at the number of research projects of national and international importance that the faculty of the college were engaged in.

Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha, principal of the college, inaugurated the meet and welcomed the delegates from Ritsumeikan University, Japan. He informed the delegates that many members of the faculty were engaged in diverse research projects and some of them had even got patents. The keynote address was delivered by Dr N Tejo Prakash, Assistant Professor, Thapar University. He appreciated the academic, research and cultural activities undertaken by the institution for the betterment of community at large.

Woman dies in road mishap

Dera Bassi, September 22
Two persons were killed in a road accidents near Lalru on Saturday. As per the information one accident occurred near ITI Chowk, Lalru, in which a woman was killed.

The woman was identified as Ajaib Kaur, resident of Chaundheri village. This accident occurred when a truck had hit the motorcycle, on which victim was travelling. Ajaib kaur was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where she succumbed to injuries. The police has registered a case against the truck driver under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC.

In other accident a conductor of a four-wheeler was killed when it collided with a truck. The four-wheeler was carrying newspapers from Chandigarh.

The deceased was identified as Sahil, 18, resident of Sector 45, Chandigarh. After the accident victim was referred to the GMCH, Chandigarh, where he died. The police has registered a case against truck driver under Sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC.

The dead bodies of both the victims had been handed over to their relatives after conducting autopsy.

Couple killed in accident

Ropar, September 22
A couple was killed in a road accident when their car had a head on collision at Asron, Nawan Shahr district, today. The deceased have been identified as Manmohan Singh (55) and Jasvinder Kaur, belonging to Hargobind Nagar of Ropar City.

Both of them died on the spot. Manmohan was running a hardware shop at Bela Chowk, Ropar City, the police said.

Another complaint filed against Royale Empire owner

Panchkula, September 22
A security agency registered a complaint with the Panchkula police against the owner of Royale Empire, Jeevan Garg, and his son Prince Garg. The accused were arrested recently for duping a number of people.

The in-charge of the security agency, Shashi Kapoor, in his complaint to the police alleged that Garg duped him of Rs 10 lakh.

“The duo had taken security services from me on August 20, 2010. According to the deal, 45 security guards were deployed at his five projects,” said Kapoor in his complaint. He added, “The cheques which they provided us had bounced.”

Jeevan Garg and his son were arrested some time ago by the Zirakpur police, after more than a dozen complaints were received against them. A number of complaints were also received by the Panchkula police. Some accomplices of the accused were also arrested.

4 arrested with 2 kg opium

Panchkula, September 22
Four persons, including a woman, were arrested by the Panchkula detective staff for being involved in drug trafficking here today. They were arrested from their residence in Sector 15. The police has seized 2 kg of milk opium.

The accused have been identified as Quyub Khan, Anita, Jitender and Chetan. The accused reportedly got the milk opium from Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. They will be produced in the court tomorrow," said a police official. — TNS

ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION TOURNAMENT
2 city players make it to U-16 national football team

Soccer players, Daniel Lalhlimpuia and Arjit Lalramzuava of Government Model High School, Sector 36, and trainees of the Chandigarh Football Academy, were selected in the national team for Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Tournament of boys (U-16).

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Tournament will be held in Tehran from September 23 to October 6 this year.

As many as 16 countries will participate in the tourney for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Tournament. Indian squad is placed in Group D with Uzbekistan, Syria and China. The team will face Uzbekistan, in its opening encounter.

Local kabaddi player selected as national team probable

Making the city proud, local Kabaddi player Mukesh Kumar has successfully made his place in the probale’s list for India men’s Kabaddi team.

Mukesh Kumar will attend a month-long coaching camp at the SAI Center, Banglore, from September 25 to October 20. Mukesh has been practicing at Sports Complex, Sector 42, for the past seven years. He gave the credit for his success to his Kabaddi coach Davinder Singh Kohli under whom he has been taking coaching.
