Dera Bassi MC without President
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, September 8
Municipal Council Dera Bassi is running without a president for last one year. All decision regarding development works are passed under guidance of the vice-president. The seat of the president is reserve for a woman candidate, but women are generally ignored here.

This seat fell vacant when 10 municipal councillors had passed a no-confidence motion against municipal council president Manjeet Kaur Dolly on October 14 last year. Later Harjinder Singh Rangi was elected as the vice-president of the council.

Executive officer Varinder Jain said according to rules, president should be elected within six months from the time the seat is either relinquished by someone or any other reason. However, he could not tell the exact reason why the post was still vacant.

Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam said the matter would be checked and the post of council president would be filled soon.

Chief parliamentary secretary and local MLA NK Sharma also said the post of council president would be filled soon. There are seven woman councillors, total is 13, here and the post of president was also reserved for a woman candidate. Municipal Councilor Dayaveer Singh said in the last meeting some councillors had decided to raise the issue of filling the post but they could not raise the issue in presence of vice-president and local MLA.

Councilor Ranjna Saini said all rights to appoint a president had been given to chief parliamentary secretary and sitting MLA NK Sharma.

The Municipal Council had wasted its time in the controversies. Nearly one-and-half year have passed and nearly nine councillors had opposed Manjeet Kaur Dolly as the president of the council.
