Divine force, spiritual voice
In person, the mystical singer Abida Parveen has her admirers gushing, "Listening to her is akin to meeting the Almighty." Across the telephone wire, her throaty laughter that comes as easily and naturally as her amazing singing prowess, is infectious. Of course, the spiritual being in her is very much intact. Never mind that she will soon be seen in a new avatar.
All set to judge a music reality show Sur Kshetra to be aired on September 8, she shares how judging others is no cakewalk. She accepted the challenge for music is the eternal bridge between the two neighbouring countries. She recalls how the programme Chote Ustad held listeners in a thrall in her native country Pakistan. Says she, "Music connects like no other force and is evident from the fact that people in Pakistan would not go anywhere in the evening just to tune in to the show." About Sur Kshetra also, she is upbeat. She likes the format that has India and Pakistan teams whose contestants she will be judging on the parameters of sur, laya and lafazon ki
adaygi. Words and their import you bet are singularly important to the singer who renders the kalaams of all time Sufi greats. Ask her to choose her favourite Sufi poet and in an instant she replies, "Who am I to judge such greats who are no less than representatives of Allah?" The beauty of Sufi poetry she deems lies in its link with dard and soz. She adds, "After all Sufi poets like Kabir were not ordinary beings but ones who can find the flame of divinity within their own selves." So is she the bearer of that divine light? Nah, she says, "Only in quest of it." Of course, the search goes back in time, to childhood years when father dearest set her on the path of music. Later she trained under the legendary Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. And from both she imbibed Dargahi rang. The growing popularity of Sufi music she credits to festivals like Jahan-E-Khusrau. Interestingly, she can now see the colour of Dargahi music in Bollywood too, in songs like Chaiyan Chayian written by
Gulzar. Expectedly, she is open to singing in movies. There might be something in the offing too. But she is not telling. Instead she divulges that her new album is on its way and is likely to be released in Delhi in the near future. Tilted Ya Ali Boo, it comprises kalaams in Persian. In this day and age, can listeners comprehend Persian? Says she, "It matters not for it carries Allah ka dard for which all you need is a heart and not understanding of the language." In Abida's powerful resonant voice, the rhythmic reverent chant, words anyway become irrelevant. What remain are the spiritual aura and the divine force. Quiz her on this and she laughs, "Mera mujh mein kuch nahi...jo kuch hai so
tera." The heights at which she stands might seem dizzying to ordinary mortals, but she owes all her achievements to her pirs and their blessings. That this ambassador of peace has blessed the world with her mohababt ka paigam in a soulful voice resonating across borders, however, is a different matter altogether.

Small savings!
A penny saved is a penny earned! In fact, the most difficult task in the current times is to save money, pushing aside all your 'immediate' spending instincts. So do youngsters of today try to save their pocket money? And what about those who start working early; do they save from their hard-earned salaries? Although we don't have any concrete data as proof, youngsters do save for one purpose or the other.
Says Akash Bansal, a young entrepreneur from Chandigarh, who is handling his family business and also running his own venture, "As a youngster I never saved, but as soon as I started working I developed this habit. From my very first saving, I bought a Tag Heuer watch." Sure, there is no better feeling than buying something from the money you have saved! Adds Devina
Soni, who runs D liciouS (cakes, chocolates and cup-cakes) from her home in Sector-8, Chandigarh, "Although I did not buy anything special from what I have earned so far, but I buy all the stuff myself." And half of whatever she earns goes back into her business. "My savings go in buying raw materials. Now, my aim is to save enough money to sponsor a trip abroad," says
Devina. Whereas the young working community gives thumbs up to saving, those still studying feel it totally depends on the situation. Says Neihal Dogra, who has just completed her law course from Panjab University, "It is easier to save during examination time because you go out less. Rest of the time it is difficult. Last year, I saved a decent amount and got a smart dress for myself. I think saving really helps," says
Neihal. Then they are some who do not want to put any added pressure on parents. Says Parnika Sawhney, who has just completed her graduation, "Earlier I used to spend all my pocket money, but now I am trying to develop a habit of saving." Again, the saving capacity totally depends on the wish-list -whether it is as immediate as a lavish dinner or a long-awaited branded dress. "One should save to realise the actual worth of money," adds Parnika. So, the next time your wallet is loaded, keep it intact! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com

Web of style
This is the finest example of productive young blood. Coming from a family of businessmen, Gaurav Bhatia, Ashish Sobti and Dixit Sahni have ventured into the world of fashion and technology. At 18, the three set up a call centre. “Today, we are launching Digaaz.com, an online fashion portal,” says Gaurav.
Fresh out of their respective graduation courses, the trio has tied up with 80 well-established brands in India and a few leading international ones. Apart from the accessories by Prada, Gucci and Dior, the group has also launched four of their own brands. “Zapitos is for men’s
formal shoes, Pineberry for men’s casual footwear, Meltme includes apparel and accessories for women and Acid Jeans is denims for men,” Gaurav adds. The website offers all the products at lesser prices in comparison to the market prices. “We already have two warehouses for most of our products,” Aashish adds. A few others have been tied up with distributors. “We have had to keep our investments in mind before procuring everything,” says Dixit. Dressed in suave formals, the young boys talks of money and investments like pros. “We also have a product of the day, which will be on a lower rate and something classy,” Gaurav says. Yes, they are hardcore businessmen. The website with a clean white background and pictures of luxurious products is quite inviting. “Our website designer comes from London with a whole lot of international experience,” Ashish grins. While Gaurav and Ashish are graduates from Punjab University, Dixit comes with a management degree from Swinburne University, Melbourne. Taking up some high and mighty project is one thing but sustaining it is another. “Yes, we have always had our differences but it’s fine. We sort them out the best way we can,” Dixit adds. As the models donning the available products walk pretty and proud,
we wonder which way will the bond go? Spiltville or one of those rare groups which stands together through thick and thin! vasudha@tribunemail.com

Eye for details
Ritu Kolentine One of the trickiest parts of make-up is doing the eye make-up. In fact, applying eye-shadow requires blending of different colours together so that it brings out the natural beauty of the eyes. Along with this, you should also care about matching your eye-shadow not just with the other make-up, but also with the colour and the style of the clothes you are wearing. If the eye-shadow is too bright, you may end up looking like a disaster. Yet when applied too little, you may appear too pale or even sickly. Eye-shadow does not simply involve a back-and-forth motion or the usual method you do when it comes to putting colours on your face. Experts say that the best way to go about this is to just focus on the eyes. People usually make the mistake of thinking too much about the eyelids, they tend to focus too much on how much make-up can they apply on it or what colours would blend on it. If you focus on the eye instead, you will do a better job. Applying eye-shadow effectively also depends upon the shades itself. Some people say that thinking about their current mood and their current outfit alone would make things turn out great once they apply their make-up. But actually, the success in eye-shadow application lies depends on the time when you will be wearing it. If the eye-shadow will be worn during the day, you should choose shades which are light and neutral. This means you may have to stick to earth colours such as brown and beige to give you a classic day-time look. It’s best to stick with the classic and simple shades during day time because chances are that the sun would just gleam so brightly on your face and colours would not be seen that much. However, if you want to experiment with different shades and different colours, even textures, you can do this for night-time make-up. Diffused and controlled lighting accentuate the colours you are wearing. Applying eye-shadow is also not just about the strokes and the colour but it is also about the texture. Eye-shadow comes in different finishes and style packaging. Like foundations and other skin applications, they may also come in as creams, powder, liquid, and even pencil. Moreover, their texture can appear as matte-finish, shimmer, glitter, and some are even specialised enough to cater to dry skin. Nowadays, you may notice that manufacturers have utilised compacts for eye shadows. This is because when it comes to eye-shadows, there is blending involved. Within these compacts, eye-shadow is not just divided according to different colours but as well as textures. Another major concern about applying eye shadow is the step-by-step procedure when it comes to blending colours. When you apply eye-shadow, you should begin by applying the lighter shades first and these colours should be applied on the lash-line and underneath the eye brows. Then the medium shades would follow and this should be applied on the lash-line still and spread up to the creases of the eyelids. The darkest shade should come in to highlight the crease of the eyes. Apply eyeliner and mascara depending upon your preference if you still want to highlight your eyes further. Raveena warms up!
After a long hiatus of five years, Raveena Tandon is returning in the Sudipto Chattopadhay directed film Shobhana 7 Nights. In the film, the 37-year-old actress plays a socialite, a columnist and an author named Shobhana, who gets into an intense relationship with a struggling actor in Bollywood. The character is loosely based on Shobhaa De and her long professional relationship with David Davidhar of Penguin India, the publisher of her novels.
Confirming the same, the director said, "Raveena's character in Shobhana 7 Nights bears a close resemblance to some of the high society authors and columnists in Mumbai. The film is bold and sensual and sure to raise eyebrows." Newcomer Amit Purohit will essay the role of the struggler, who turns to prostitution to survive his journey into Bollywood. "When I narrated to Raveena about the struggling male escorts in Bollywood, she did not believe me. She was curious and hence we decided to go to this particular coffee shop where such male escorts have a base. Raveena, who wore a burkha, was stunned by everything that was happening," the filmmaker revealed. Sudipto, who had earlier directed Pankh in 2010, is confident that Raveena would again give an award-winning performance in the film.

Foot in the mouth
R&B star Rihanna has been branded "a freak" by animal rights campaigners after she took to the streets wearing a pair of snakeskin boots. The We Found Love hit maker was photographed outside the Rose nightclub in central London sporting a pair of thigh-high black-and-white boots apparently made from reptile hide, reported a publication.
But her fashion choice has angered officials at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who have spoken out to brand Rihanna's footwear "callous". "Rihanna may not have a clue that snakes killed for boots are often nailed to a tree and skinned alive. Of course, they can't go on Oprah to cry about it. Wearing reptile skin is creepy and callous, and it makes her look even more out of touch. She and Lady Gaga seem so desperate to be freaks instead of recognised for their talents that you have to wonder if they realise that they are being laughed at," a PETA spokesman said. —

Million dollar touch!
Paris Hilton has been paid a whopping 1 million dollars for a two-day job that required her to wear a swimsuit in a Korean music video. Despite a dismal dabble in music in the past, the 31-year-old actress beat top Hollywood stars such as Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson to get the job alongside singer Kim Jang
Hoon.
The hotel heiress was required to don a bathing suit and heels to wander along Malibu beach in the two-day shot. "We considered several Hollywood stars, such as Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson and Paris Hilton, for the role of lead actress in Kim's new music video," Hoon's agency said. "But a survey conducted in Korea showed that Paris Hilton was the most well-known," they said. —
