Lalru Mandi residents are forced to pass through muddy streets every day, much to their inconvenience.

They have been continually demanding for proper repair of streets. The streets here were dug up for setting up of a sewerage system but since then it was not repaired properly.

The roads are in a dire need of repair particularly after the commencement of rainy season. The streets are filled with muds and debris which lead to accidents.

Lalru Mandi residents, Krishan Gupta and Umesh Kumar, said streets were dug up for the setting a sewerage system some time ago but not properly repaired. It was difficult to cross on these muddy streets, particularly in raining season, they added.

They demanded proper repair of the streets so that accidents and harassment of people could be avoided.

Municipal Council officials said the GMADA had set up the sewerage system here and that it was their responsibility to repair the roads.

Directorate may defer soccer meet
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 2
The ongoing rains may have brought cheers on many faces but for soccer lovers of Punjab and the City Beautiful, the regular rainfall can bring sad news. Even after having two soccer grounds, the Directorate of Sports, Panjab University, has failed to start the Inter-college Football Tournament for men (A- Division) as showers continue here.

The tournament is known as the basis of selecting teams for the Inter-university North Zone Tournament and All India Inter-university Games. Earlier, the tournament was expected to start on August 27 but it was postponed to September 1. But now the officials are thinking of postponing it further. The North Zone Inter-university Tournament is schedule to be held from September 27 at Lovely Professional University.

"We are helpless when it comes to nature. A meeting will be held tomorrow to decide the future of the tournament. If the rain continues to pour, I am afraid, we have to postpone the tournament again," said Gurmeet Singh, Director of Sports (additional charge). When asked about the selection of the teams Gurmeet said, "In case, if the rain continues to play a spoilspot, different teams will be called and the probables for the Inter-university Tournament will be selected after conducting a two-day trial,".

On other hand, a group of soccer players and coaches were opposing the decision of the top officials. An official said, " Panjab University has almost 180 colleges affiliated to it and out of 180 colleges 50 colleges must be having grounds. Last year the tournament was shifted to Government College, Sector 11, due to rains but we have failed to understand the exact reason behind the postponing of the tournament. In the city they have football stadiums at Sector 17, Sector 42 and at Government college sector 11" said the official.

"Every year the officials organise trials to select the inter-university teams even after judging the players' performance during the Inter-college Tournament and this year if the officials are planning to select directly, then they must be having something in mind. The North Zone Tournament is around the corner and players need to attend a camp for atleast one-month. If they can judge it in a two-day trial, then we can organise the Inter-college Tournament after Inter-university Tournaments every year," another official said.
