Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Ambala, August 26
Thieves took away cash and gold ornaments from a house in Ambala late last night. The owner of the house, Pramod Kumar, in a complaint filed with the police, said that Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and 12 tola of gold ornaments were stolen from his house.

According to information, Pramod had gone to a religious place along with his family on Saturday. When he came back this morning, he found that the locks of the entry gate were broken. On entering inside the house, he noticed that all the cupboards were open and the cash and jewelry were missing.

The police has summoned a dog squad and finger expert to find clues to the thieves but no clue has been found in the case so far. — OC

Three drug peddlers arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 26
The district police claimed to have arrested 3 drug peddlers during checking at different places and recovered intoxicant tablets, capsules, injections and powder. HS Mann, SSP, told that district police has initiated a campaign against drug sellers on war footing and the SHOs have been directed to set up nakas to intensify checking of vehicles, patrolling and conducting raids.

He said at a naka at Sirhind, the police signalled a scooter rider to stop but he tried to flee and over powered. He said that during the search, police recovered 1500 intoxicant tablets and capsules from his scooter. The accused was identified as Manpreet Singh, resident of Khanna.

In another incident, the police arrested one Harsimranjit Singh, alias Prince, resident of Amloh at a naka near village Shonti and recovered 270 gm narcotic powder from his custody. He admitted that he used to sell drugs in rural areas. The police also arrested one Baljit Singh, resident of Sanghol, and recovered 5 gm smack from his custody. All the accused were booked under the NDPS Act. — OC

2 unidentified bodies found

Dera Bassi, August 26
The Railway police has found two bodies from railway tracks at two different places. The bodies could not be identified and have been kept in civil hospital, Dera Bassi, for 72 hours for identification.

One body was found last night near the Dera Bassi railway crossing. The body was in a black and white shirt and a pair of blue jeans. The deceased appeared to be around 30 year old.

The other body was found near Dappar village today morning. The body was in a sky blue colour trouser.— OC

Vehicle thief arrested

Chandigarh, August 26
The UT police today arrested a person for his involvement in various motor vehicle thefts in the city.

The police arrested 30-year-old Sanjay Kumar, alias Rakesh, a resident of Sector 38, and recovered 11 two-wheelers, including six motorcycles (make Honda CBZ, Bajaj Pulsar, Hero Honda Splendor, two Bajaj Discover and TVS Apache), five scooters (four Bajaj Chetak and 1 LML Vespa) and 2 Panasonic video cameras stolen from different areas of the city by him.

DSP Ashish Kapoor said Sanjay was a taxi driver by profession. Investigations revealed that the accused had stolen a Logan car number CH-04-B-9554 from behind the DC office in Sector 17 in 2011. He also stole a Palio car number CH-01-AC-0825 from the rear side of Sector 22 in 2011. All the cases have been solved with his arrest. The accused will be produced in the court tomorrow.

Six-member ‘RDX’ gang busted, claims police
Four arrested, one in jail and another absconding

The Special Technical Operation Cell (STOC) today claimed to have busted a six-member gang involved in various thefts in the city. Four members of the gang have been arrested.

The gang is known as “RDX” gang and its members have tattoos with the name of “RDX” on their body for identification. Stolen items worth R 2 lakh have been recovered from their possession.

A police team got a lead after arresting one member of the gang while he was riding on a stolen motorcycle on a road leading to the Railway station from Mauli Jagran. The said Pulsar Motorcycle number DL9S-AE-3638 was stolen from Kishangarh and a case was also registered at the Mani Majra police station.

The accused Ravi, alias Paddu, a resident of Ramdarbar, was arrested and on his disclosure, the second accused, Mohammad Sehbaj, a resident of near Mata Raj Kaur Gurdwara, Mani Majra, was arrested near Fun Republic, Mani Majra along with a stolen mobile phone.

The police recovered one stolen LCD of Samsung make on the information given by Ravi. One gold ear-ring was also recovered. On interrogating Ravi, two more members of the “RDX” gang -Narinder Mannu, a resident of Ramdarbar and Gaurav, alias Gora, a resident of Ramdarbar were also arrested.

The police recovered a stolen silver ring, one silver necklace set, two (LPG) gas cylinders and four computers from them. The cost of these recovered items is about Rs two lakh.

The police said that out of the two remaining members of the gang, one was absconding and the other was already in Burail Jail for some other crime.

All members of the gang had inscribed a tattoo named “RDX?” on hand or the neck while one accused had the tattoo on his finger.

The police said a total of16 cases have been registered against Ravi at various city police stations. Besides, four cases were registered against Gaurav, alias Gora, and three cases were registered against Narinder, alias Mannu.

17 duped of Rs 77.45 lakh

An immigration company duped people of Rs 77.45 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad.

According to the police, Baldish Singh made a complaint on May 14 alleging that Vishal Kumar, Dishesh Kumar and Inderjeet Singh, who were running the company from the commercial area of Phase VII, took Rs 77. 45 lakh from 17 persons promising them to send abroad. But they failed to send any of them abroad, and neither was the money given back.

The complaint was inquired into by SHO, Matour, and a case under Sections 406, 420, 465, 468, 471 and 120 B of the IPC was registered in this regard.

Dowry case

The police has booked a resident of Fatehgarh Neola village on dowry harassment charge. According to the police, Harpeet Kaur, resident of Tolpur village, said she married Mandeep Singh on October 22, 2010, and soon after the marriage was beaten and harassed for dowry. She then lodged a complaint with the SSP on May 5. The complaint was inquired into by the in-charge of the Women Cell. A case under Sections 406 and 498 A of the IPC has been registered against Mandeep Singh. — OC

City team lift trophy
Trailing by 3 goals, CHA lads struck thrice in a span of 9 minutes

The Chandigarh Hockey Academy defeated Surjit Hockey Academy to lift the 11th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Sub-Junior (U-14) hockey tournament being held at the hockey stadium of sports complex today. In the final, the wining side beat their rivals 4-3.

Harmanjeet Singh drew the first blood for the visiting side in the 8th minute of eth match, taking full advantage of a penalty corner. The team soon doubled their lead after Kushdaman Singh struck in the 15th minute of the match. Navpreet Singh took the score to 3-0 in the 20th minute of the match. But the CHA lads kept their calm and came back in the match after striking three goals within a span of nine minutes.

For the local side, Harnek Singh scored the first goal in the 22nd minute while Pushpinder scored the second goal in the 25th minute of the match. Maninder Singh leveled the score in the 31st minute, showing his wonderful stick work. Harnek sealed the team's victory after scoring the fourth goal for the team in the 39th minute. The wining team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000 while the runners-up received Rs 20,000.

Individual prizes:

Best goal keeper- Sanampreet Singh (Ratwara Sahib). Best full back- Kushdaman Singh (Surjit Academy, Jalandhar). Best half back- Pardeep Singh (CRZ, Sonepat). Best forward- Pushpinder Singh (CHA, Chandigarh). Fair play trophy- CRZ, Sonepat.

Sunday turned out to be a special day for Shiv Chopra, the proud father of Prashant Chopra, the opener of under-19 India cricket team after the junior ‘Men in Blue’ thrashed Australia to bag the U-19 ICC World Cup.

A coach at the cricket stadium of Sector 16, Shiv Chopra has all the reason to celebrate and feel proud of the team’s victory. “It was big day for the team. The win was not easy but the lads kept their calm throughout the match. It is a proud moment for me and I am proud of my son,” said Shiv.

“The team played well, although Prashant lost his wicket early in the match. The skipper and the middle order kept their calm to defeat the defending champions,” said Shiv.

Notably, the Australian team has never been defeated in the finals of the competition. The Indian team lost their first four wickets during the chase, and it was an uphill task, but they accelerated towards the end to achieve the target with a few balls to spare. “For Prashant, the tournament provided many ups and downs but he played well and will improve with time. After the team’s win, he called to say 'We won'. I am waiting for his comeback so that I can see that happiness in his eyes,” added Shiv. Prashant has represented Himachal Pradesh and usually practices at the Sector 16 cricket stadium under the guidance of his father.

Arunima, Anubhav win U-15 chess titles

Arunima Goyal of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, won the title of Chandigarh Chess Championship for Open and Girls (U-15) being held here today. She scored 5½ points. On the other hand, Anubhav Tuknayat of Vivek High School, Sector 38, won the Open category event, securing 5 points. A total of 44 boys and girls participated in the championship.

The organisers have selected Anubhav Tuknayat, Jaskeerat Singh, Prateek Wadhwa and Archit Gupta to represent the city in the forthcoming National Open (U-15) Chess Championship to be held at Nagpur from September 16 to 25. Arunima Goyal, Tarini Goyal, Tanya Kaushal and Kashish Kaushal have been selected to represent Chandigarh in the forthcoming National Girls (U-15) Chess Championship to be held in Mumbai from September 16 to 25.
