Devour art!
Vandana Shukla

You have seen art in its visual vocabulary. And you have heard of functional art. Now, involve your taste-buds…
yes, you can even eat art…

Chandni Sikand, Manya Mehta
(L-R) Chandni Sikand, Manya Mehta

Connoisseurs argue there is no demarcation in the experience of senses. When it comes to art, the experience is akin to love-making — you can't shut a few senses for the pleasure of the rest. In simple parlance — a thing of beauty offers joy for all the senses.

So, adding a new chapter in the evolution of art that has undergone many transformations; from a simple scroll to canvas, to art merchandise, which has touched almost all aspects of life, a beginning was made in Delhi last week with seven-course art.

The innovation was a brain-child of Tanvi Kapur and Divya Mahajan, entrepreneurs, who hosted an evening of luxury and art for Tad Arts. Amidst displayed works of art, artists evoked the aesthetics of gourmet food prepared by Chef Saby, who laid out an installation of art in food, to be later eaten by the invited guests!

Different strokes

Galleries across the world have been known for adopting novel ways to attract art buyers and viewers. From giving space to graffiti to offering chicken soup, made by killing the same chicken the artist had fed before art lovers for days, galleries have done it all. 'Strange Cargo', a UK-based gallery invited people to post other people's photograph; a 'self-commissioned non-architectural' art activity for public spaces and to promote community feeling. Aneesh Kapoor's show in Delhi had a canon that fired and a red botch appeared on the wall with each firing of the canon.

The guests were encouraged to awaken their taste-buds with gourmet hors d'oeuvres and delectable cuisine. Personalised wine-tasting gave another flavour and dimension to the entire experience of this new flavour of art while art collectors gratified their palettes with the life-size works by Amit Kumar Jaiswal, Farhad Hussain, Ramesh Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Shyamal Mukherjee and Suchit Sahni.

Says Tanvi Kapur, "Art on Plate is a unique concept that is being held for the very first time in the history of the art world. We wanted to spread the message that art is omnipresent in every object that meets the eye, including gourmet food."

The menu for this art was a seven-course lavish dinner with Amuse Bouche, leeks, onion and feta quiche (piccante pepper, spicy bravash, greens), salad of organic mesclun and melon (sunflower seed, olives, sumac vinaigrette), cranberry sorbet (green apple caviar), cream cheese stuffed artichoke (exotic mushroom risotto, truffle oil, roast vegetable jus), apple & red current filo pouches (berry compote, apple chips, blue berry ice-cream), petit four for vegetarians and Amuse Bouche, prawn and leek quiche (piccante pepper, spicy bravash, greens), confit of corn-fed chicken leg (exotic mushroom risotto, truffle oil, red wine jus), Rum raisin Chocolate terrine (berries, vanilla ice cream, bitter chocolate sauce), petit four for non-vegetarians.

The event offered an opportunity to the invited guests to get a few tips on cooking from the chef while the artists were there to add the much required beauty to the recipe. The million dollar question was, will there be takers (eaters) for this new evolution in art?

Niten Mehta, founder director, TAD Arts says, "We believe that art is an experience. We try and offer the customers/art-lovers a luxurious experience through innovative concepts and art exhibitions. The artists we represent showcase the best talents in the country for contemporary Indian art. We believe a bit of effort in the right direction goes a long way.'

Well, the list of invitees was certainly long. There were businessmen, artists and home-makers. Along with Chef Saby, artists Suchit Sahni and Rohit Sharma, Niten Mehta, Nikhil Kumar, Surbhi Modi, Karan Modi, Sangeeta Sharma, Smita Prakash, Shuchismita Kapur, Vidur Puri, Smriti Puri, Madhuri Saraf, Pushpanjali Singh, Chandni Sikand, Manya Mehta, Arjun Chopra, Sunaina Chopra, Sumana Das Gupta, among others, were seen appreciating the art and even getting a few lessons in how to mix art with a mundane thing like food.

Punjabi actor Kartar Cheema, who has already made his debut in Bollywood with Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, likes to essay negative roles

Role on: Kartar Cheema

A while ago, every nook and corner of Punjab would boast of contributing a singer to the industry. Now, the same nook and corners are churning out Punjabi actors, one in a month if not less! But where the boys and girls are trying their hand in Punjabi cinema asking for goodie-goodie roles, Kartar Cheema, who has already made his debut in Bollywood with Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, is all for negative roles.

The bad boy image with a touch of goodness is what made Kartar win the award for Best Actor in Negative Role for the film Yaar Anmulle at the Punjabi International Film Academy Awards 2012 in Canada. “While everybody else could be vying for hero kind of roles, I am open to characters and roles that have something to offer to me as well as the audiences,” says Kartar, excited about his next release opposite Gul Panag — Sarsa.

Kartar plays the lead in the film. “It is like revisiting my college days in Punjabi University, Patiala. I am into student politics, a hero; a mix of both bad and good,” he says.

All the time during the conversation, Kartar doesn’t let go off the opposites that exist in any human being. ‘If I am a mix of positives and negatives, so should my characters — real and closer to life,” says Kartar, who has featured in more than 200 music videos.

While he soon starts shooting for his upcoming project Ishq Mohabbat Balle Balle, Kartar can’t wait to tell us how big Punjabi cinema has grown. “I was elated as well as startled to see the entire Bollywood and Punjabi music industry gathered for the awards. In fact, soon you might see Dharamendra in a Punjabi movie,” he shares this little piece of information with us. Like the cliché goes, this is just the beginning for this actor. “The journey has begun. Pretty soon I would be making my own Hindi film, starting a production house and acting in many other good movies.” Kartar hits the gymnasium regularly and loves to stay fit. “Punjabi actors are no less than others, so why not look good.”

Success mantra
Perfect cut

Theatre remains Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari’s first love, although glamour and recognition has come her way through telly and films. An actor as well as a famed costume designer, Dolly has made her mark in a field not much known or respected, at least when she started.

It’s sheer grit that led her to international projects and fame. She places much of the credit of her success to the training she received at the National School of Drama. “My first project was The Making of Gandhi in which I was some 10th or 15th assistant,” says Dolly, who could well relate to where her true calling was in her very first project. Once she started, success was almost instant. The Burning Train was her first independent venture, which was an Indo-Canadian film that got her a lot of accolades. A National Award, Filmfare Award and IIFA in costume designing and films such as Bandit Queen, Water, The Blue Umbrella, Omkara, Partition, Love Aaj Kal and Kaminey: The Scoundrels to her credit, she has also made a mark as an actor (her recent hit movie being Vicky Donor). “I have made a promise to myself that I will quit the day I feel slightly irritated. But the faith of directors, such as Deepa Mehta, Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bhardwaj and Pankaj Kapur, in me has made me love each minute of work.” Dolly who loves cooking, listening to Indian classical music and reading in her free time, and also Facebooking to share the latest gossip, shares her success mantras.

Honesty pays

Honesty is basic, be it any profession. One needs to be honest in all walks of life and profession. If I don’t relate to a character, how can I give it the look? Turning ‘a very modern’ Lisa Ray into a widow or muscular John Abraham into a Bengali Babu (I actually taught him on how to tie a dhoti) can happen only if I am completely honest to my work.

Visualise everything

Observation and visualisation are the keys to being a successful costume designer. Observing each day, each thing; how a tree down the road looks different each new day or how I arrange these pebbles on my table. There might be thousands of types of beggars, what do I choose from each of them to dress one in my film. And, of course, being in touch with who is wearing what, the latest in the market — the styles or the fabrics — to make my characters real.

Creative vein

The demands of being a costume designer are challenging and deadlines sudden. Even if I just have plastic paper, I should be able to craft a costume out of it. Turning Kareena from the kinds of looks she carried in movies like 36 Chinatown to a simple village belle in Omkara or turning Sri lanka to India for Midnight’s Children can happen with creativity.

Be confident

I am talking strictly of self-confidence and not over-confidence. If confidence takes you forward, over-confidence stalls and stagnates. You need to know all the ‘whys’ in life. Saif was baffled to play a Shakespearean character in Omkara dressed in khadi kurta or kambal (blanket). I took stuff to him, made him wear it and soon Saif got convinced for that successful Langra Tyagi look.

Teamwork important

I believe in sharing not only with my director and actors, but also assistants. The vision can’t be transferred to reality if I don’t talk to my tailors. Being open to opinions makes you flourish. mona@tribunemail.com

Packaged beautifully in rich red and golden hues, the temple is a re-creation of the Ram Darbar showcasing Lord Rama, Lakshman and Sita with Lord Hanuman crouching by their side.

Big dreams: Dishank Arora

Dishank Arora would love to essay a lead role on TV, but unfortunately for him, he has been offered roles where he plays the younger sibling of the male lead.

“Yes, I play the role of Pratik in Shashi-Sumeet Mittal Productions Pvt Ltd’s Punar Vivah on Zee TV where I am the younger brother of Yash, played by Gurmeet Choudhary. And again, in the same production house’s show on Life OK Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki, I play younger brother to Arjun Agnihorti (Sudeep Sahir). I would love to do a lead role, but guess I look quite young when it comes to my looks,” says Dishank.

He adds, “Actually I had been offered lead roles in recently concluded shows such as Tum Dena Saath Mera on Life OK and Dekha Ek Khwaab on Sony. Somehow, things did not work out then,” he adds.

About his earlier roles, Dishank states, “I had played a positive youth character in Star One’s Love Ne Mila Di Jodi, and a negative role in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat on Star Plus. I entered Raja Ki… quite late. Similarly in Imagine’s Armanon Ka Balidaan, I was introduced as a mentally challenged guy after the lead died. I had also played a casanova in YRF Television’s Kismat for Sony. In addition to this, I was supposed to do a Y film project (Yashraj youth Film) which did not see the light of the day.”

About his role in Punar Vivah, he says, “Pratik is a very positive guy, who will put his family above him and his wife. He cares a lot for his elder brother Yash and will do anything for him.”

Deepika Govind

Her Pop Patola at the recently held Lakme Fashion Week received a lot of applause from fashion critics. The mix of weaving tradition of the Patola from Patan, Gujarat, and its modern interpretation made for quite an unusual theme. And Deepika Govind was able to deliver it on the ramp through her designs. Here she makes a fashion forecast and warns against what can cause a fashion faux pas.

What's out

It's time that some flowers are taken out of the floral prints. Keep it simple but not plain. Pastels are not for this season. If you suffer from the matching-dress-shoes-bags syndrome, treat yourself by experimenting with colours.

Creations from Deepika Govind’s latest collection Pot Patola at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week

Colour count: Black is the colour of the season. Antique copper will look the best at the parties. Go in for a new colour like burnt earth, cranberry, vermillion and violet.

Party couture: Can it ever get any better than a little black dress. Just make sure what you pick suits your body type.

Best dressed celebrity: Gweneth Paltrow.

Design wise: Yohji Yamamoto, a Japanese fashion designer, known for his avant-garde designs.

On the Indian fashion industry: We are still a fledgling industry, burgeoning with talent. We have got the ideas and the craftsmen to give a tangible shape to the ideas, I just hope that the corporate sector increases its backing, which will eventually help in the further growth of the industry.

What's in

Lots of sheer black. Prints will continue to be a safe bet, especially geometric ones will help you score high on the fashion report card. Vintage look as always will be in this winter too. The silhouette of the season is hourglass. It accentuates the figure if one is fit. Besides denims, try A line skirts but volume shouldn't be much.

Over the top
Jesse Grewal

A swing coming over the top is a commonly used term which is used to describe a 'pulled' shot. An imaginary line drawn from the ball through the shoulders is called the swing plane. If the club on the downswing comes from outside or over this line it is called over the top or an out to in swing. This results in a 'pulled' shot or a ball going straight left for a right handed player.

The two basic reasons for this could be a faulty plane or swinging motion of the arms or a lunging or early turn of the shoulders from the top of the backswing.

If the arms and club move inside during the backswing they will tend to loop outwards and come down from the outside in the downswing. As the arms and club get too far behind the body in the backswing the natural motion would be to throw them out in front of the body in the downswing. This causes the club to come over the top. To correct this one has to change the backswing path to make sure that the club does not get behind the hands till it is parallel to the ground. Use a mirror to check this.

The second reason for an over the top downswing is 'hitting from the top' or an early move of the shoulders from the top of the backswing. The first move should be a turning action of the hips to initiate the downswing. This helps the club to drop down and inside which creates the right plane. The turning of the lower body (hips and legs) pull the shoulders which in turn pull the arms. This would be the correct sequence. In an incorrect action the hips do not turn and the shoulders unwind early throwing the club outside the plane.

Make a correct takeaway with the upper body (shoulders) initiating the backswing and start the downswing with the work of the lower body (hips and legs) to create a correct plane of the golf swing.

Abu-Sandeep to help plan Big B’s 70th birthday

Renowned designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, a favourite of the Bachchans, are helping the family plan Amitabh’s 70th birthday celebrations.

Big B’s birthday falls in October and the family is planning to make his birthday memorable. Abu-Sandeep said they will be helping out Jaya Bachchan in planning the bash.

“We would happily assist Jayaji in the grand birthday celebration of Amitabh Bachchan. Whatever help she requires we would happily do it. Individually we are not hosting any party for him. It is the family’s prerogative,” Khosla said. The designer duo has styled everyone in the Bachchan family from Big B to wife Jaya, son Abhishek, daughter Nanda and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

“It really feels nice as they appreciate our work. They support us.

The bond that we share with them is very special and different,” Khosla said. Big B formally released Abu-Sandeep’s maiden book titled India Fantastique on Saturday. “We worked on this book for almost two and half years. It is an ode to the arts, crafts and creativity of India at their finest. Through this we are setting the vision of our creativity in the coming years,” Khosla said. Abu-Sandeep have completed 25 years in the fashion industry and are ecstatic about it.

“The journey has been amazing. We have seen highs and lows. We have never followed trends, we have always set them. It has been a magical journey. We are pleased to receive this kind of appreciation from all quarters. It is our biggest gift,” Khosla said. — PTI

Kudos to the guy who created this joyous delight called ice creams. They soothe you inside out in this dreary humid weather. To me any time is ice cream time, be it chocolatey, fruity, nutty or saucy. But who was the devil who discovered calories? This little word spells gloom and doom, every time I'm in the mood for a scoop of chilled heaven. But every problem has a solution, and mine is homemade frozen yogurt-pops. They are deliciously light, low in calories and easy to put together. They are a special 'treat-on-a-stick' for children too, with added health benefits. For this recipe you can use any available crush too, be it strawberry, blueberry, plum or kiwi.

Method

  • Peel, chop and liquidise the mango flesh with the orange juice, sugar to taste and some of the lemon juice
  • Beat the yogurt until smooth, then add to the mango pulp.
  • Re-adjust sugar and lemon juice quantities till a fine balance is achieved.
  • Tip the mixture into a steel container and tighten the lid. Freeze for 4-6 hours.
  • Remove from the freezer, break up the frozen mixture and beat till somewhat smooth. This twice freezing method results in a smoother result with less crystals.
  • Ladle into lolly-moulds or ordinary paper cups. If using the latter, create a cardboard cover for each of them and make a slit in the centre to accommodate an ice cream stick
  • Freeze for 6-8 hours, then un-mould in lukewarm water to serve.

Ingredients

2 medium-sized mangoes

½ cup orange juice

¼-½ cup powdered sugar

4-6 tbs p lemon juice

1¼ tub low-fat yogurt (500 gm approx)

ice-lolly moulds or short paper cups

Size-wise
Dr Vineeta Munjal

In a recent interview, a Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, who has had a fairly rewarding career till now said she was often questioned if she was anorexic, or was suffering from an eating disorder. The actor said that she was naturally of slender build, and urged girls not to chase a 'size zero'. right and stay at your ideal body weight, she stressed.

The actor is right. In their dream to be a certain size, girls in their teens or early 20s are known to fall prey to eating disorders. Such anorexic patterns can have long-term implications on their body. These problems may not be seen in the youthful years, but can become a cause of concern later. Long-term anorexia and other such health disorders can also jeopardize a woman's chances of conception, a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

Staying fit is essential for long-term good health. But a slender figure must not be achieved at the cost of losing the other essentials. A mother must watch out for any dramatic weight loss in her daughter, which may be caused by wrong eating habits such as taking extremely small portions or picking at food. The short-term consequences of an eating disorder can be constant tiredness , dehydration, dry skin, extreme thinness, hair loss and even loss of periods.

It has been seen that from the time when a young girl decides to get married and during the time leading up to her marriage, she may go in for drastic weight loss to look "slim and beautiful" in all the wedding celebrations, and in her bridal outfit. It can be a cause of concern if the 'crash dieting' stretches for some months, a year or even more. Girls must understand that poor eating over a long period of time can leave them with anemia and weak bones.

A still from the movie Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi

Everyone is looking forward to seeing the unusual paring of Boman Irani and Farah Khan in the rom-com Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi. The couple looks cute and so does the song Ishq Mein Tere Bina. The blend of piano, guitar and harmonica lead you into the song as Shreya Ghoshal and KK humik Ram Pararara Tarara at intervals. The expert duo's smooth version of the breezy number makes it a quintessential sweet romantic song. The melody itself is heart warming and hummable. Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics are filmy and perfect for the situation.

Lovable tune

It is a totally romantic outing and comes as a surprise seeing Boman and Farah Khan romance each other. The talented singing duo KK and Shreya Ghoshal have lend their voices to this quick paced, breezy love song that has a nice tune attached to it, which makes it a must to hear.

Golden silence
Kristen Stewart refuses to talk about the cheating scandal

Kristen Stewart is reportedly refusing to talk about her situation with ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson after being hit by the cheating scandal.

The 22-year-old Twilight star, who skipped the London premiere of her new movie On The Road, will remain in hiding until next month’s Toronto Film Festival. Stewart will promote her latest flick at the Festival but does not plan on doing an interview to address her being caught having a fling with director Rupert Sanders.

“Kristen has been hiding ever since the story of her affair with Rupert broke — and she doesn’t plan on breaking that habit just yet,” a source said. “Unlike Rob, who faced the music and threw himself into promoting his new movie Cosmopolis, Kristen isn’t comfortable with facing a barrage of questions about the cheating scandal.

“Her pals have urged her to follow Robert’s lead and do some interviews for On The Road — just to get it over and done with. The sooner she faces the music, the quicker it will all end and the media glare will fall on someone else,” the source added.

Small screen star

Actor Samir Soni, who has been part of hit TV shows such as Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Saaksshi and now Parichay, says his television stint began as a compromise. The 43-year-old actor is currently playing the lead role of a lawyer in Ekta Kapoor’s Parichay, which has earned him accolades from the audience as well as awards.

“I started my career wanting to be a film actor. But surprisingly I am very comfortable and happy being part of the small screen.

“TV started as a compromise for me. It was a logical decision. Even if you do two films a year, you don’t shoot for more than 100 days. The actor in you starts dying. The great thing about TV is I get to work regularly, assess my performance and the results are immediate,” Samir said in an interview.

The actor also said that he is enjoying his stint as a TV actor so much that he does not have time to even look for any other work project.

“I don’t have the time to look elsewhere for work. I have not worked this hard in my life. I work 27 days a month. The year been kind as I have won three awards for best actor for my role in Parichay.

“The last show I did was Dil Kya Chahta Hai in 2008. I came back to TV after 7-8 years and it seems like the people actually like me on TV,” Samir said. — PTI

Kunis is cautious

Trust issues: Mila Kunis

Actress Mila Kunis says she finds it hard to trust others but is trying to feel more secure about herself.

The 29-year-old said she is trying to shrug off her cautious side and become more fun and open in her life.

“I’m trying to be less guarded and more open. I find it hard to trust people. There’s a side to me that’s very cautious and suspicious. But I’m gradually feeling a little more secure about who I am and enjoying everything that’s been happening to me.

“I’m trying to have more fun in life. I’m much more conservative than people think —I mean, I don’t send out naked photos of myself or climb out of limos without any knickers on!” she said. — PTI

Real support

Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham said she suffered a panic attack and almost walked off stage ahead of the bands reunion gig at the Olympics closing ceremony.

The 38-year-old, who took to the stage on the last night of the London 2012 Games with her bandmates Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell, said it was Bunton who turned to calm her as they made their way to the stadium.

“I was in the taxi with Emma before we started and I nearly just got out of the car. I was so nervous. I felt sick and Emma was so amazing. Honestly, that’s how you know a real friend. If it wasn’t for her, I would not have been out there,” she said. — PTI
