Govinda aala rey…
One place that celebrates life, death, re-birth, marriage and just about every festival is Bollywood. Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, Karwa Chauth, Valentine’s Day…. the actors dance and sing to bring the moment alive on screen. And the words that have made repeated appearances in Hindi are those of the Govinda—Govidna aala rey! Be it Amitabh Bachchan collecting the entire nagri with Mach gaya shor saari nagro main (Khudaar) or Ajay Devgn throwing an open challenge, Jiteyga wahi jismain hai dum in the movie Sangram.
As Chandigarh is abuzz with Janmashtami celebrations, we zoom on the silver screen and its special focus on dahi handi song sequences. Not to forget the Mast mast nain girl Sonakshi Sinha being the first actress to do a dahi handi scene in the movie Rowdy Rathore! “Manhoman Desai created magic with Shammi Kapoor in the movie Bluff Master with the song Govinda aala rey and till date one song sequence of dahi handi has been part of most Bollywood films,” shares actor director Puneet Issar. Religion is a huge pillar, and Bollywood has always brought it to life in a sing-song manner. “Hindi movies respect and encash on religion. There would be either a song on Navratra, Ganesh puja or Janamastmi. Manhoman Desai was the mass’s director and knew how such occasions would go down well with the audiences and that is being carried out till date,” he adds. Bollywood has celebrated every occasion with a larger than life screen presence. Hrithik Roshan brought the dahi handi scene alive in Agneepath. And Sonakshi Sinha wasn’t far behind in Rowdy Rathore. Director Vivek Agnihotri looks at it from Mumbai point of view. “Because Hindi film industry is based in Mumbai, so they have picked up a ritual dahi handi that is celebrated in a particular manner. This is how it is portrayed on screen,” he says talking about how just about every actor has done a dahi handi scene in a movie. “I think the only one left to do it is Shah Rukh Khan. Right from Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Akshay Kumar to Salman Khan, everyone has done it.” However, director Nila Neela Madhab Panda who shot to fame with his movie I am Kalam is of the opinion that film industry needs to explore many more festivals. “Why don’t we show Pongal or Bihu on screen? The fact that Bollywood is Mumbai-centric, we have stories and festivals that are from this place. Off late, we are seeing a shift towards Delhi.” Cinema is on an exploring spree and we can always have another festival highlighted on the commercial screen. As Nila says, “If cinema has to glorify, in addition to Janamasthmi there are other festivals that can do the same.” As the Twitter gets flooded with Janamasthmi tweets lavishly sprinkled by Bollywood celebrities, and we get ready for TV channels to show us top ten 10 dahi handi numbers, we hold Nila’s thought, dahi handi is indeed a beautiful festival.
Forget about live shows or election campaigns, celebrities these days are invited on festivals as well. Dahi handi is one such ritual that these many Bollywood stars breaking the handi at various events. John Abraham, Sayali Bhagat, Sunny Deol, Neha Dhupia,Shahid Kapoor are some the actors who have attended the dahi handi functions. Next we might see te Jism 2 favourite Sunny Leone breaking the handi as she has been invited at one of the functions. Who’s next?

For Lord’s sake
As we bow our heads to the beloved flute-playing God, Krishna, this Janamashtmi, the excitement builds up not only in the temples but also in the families who firmly believe in the Lord. From dressing up the God to keeping fast and making a feast for the family, the day marks a transcendental storm in the kitchens.
Starting with cooking scrumptious sweet dishes prepared from milk and curd that were Lord Krishna’s favourite, most families though fast on this day; cook a variety of dishes to offer to the God and then have it as parsad. Known as phalhar people have their own recipes and ways to celebrate this day. Bond with the Lord
For the Jain family of Sector 6 Panchkula, they are a firm believer of Lord Krishna and have an idol of Ladoo Gopal established in their home temple. Besides cooking some delectable feast on the day, the ladies of the house decorate the temple and adorn the idol of Krishna with beautiful clothes and accessories. “This day marks the birth of Lord Krishna and since we have a temple dedicated to Ladoo Gopal ji in our house this day holds a special significance for our family. And to celebrate the day my wife Aarti decorates the temple and dresses Kanha. Other than that a special meal is cooked early in the morning and then offered to the Lord. As we fast on this day, we do not eat anything throughout the day and it is only after a special mahurat at night that we have food,” says Rajnish Jain. Family affair
Contrary to the concept of nuclear family, Singhals of Sector 28 is a big family that has four generations staying in the same house and since they too believe in Krishna the day is celebrated with great pomp and show. “Right from my great grandmother who is 90 to the youngest member of the family who is 9, everyone fasts on Krishan Janamasthmi. And the celebrations begin two days prior,” says Monica Singhal. To mark the day, she says, “Food is one part of the celebration. We even stitch the dresses of the lord ourselves and make his jhula and some jhankis. The birth of the lord is celebrated till 4 am in the morning of Janamashtmi and the daughter-in-laws and children of the house are given bhadai just like a new child is born in the house. For the dishes we cook aloo ka halwa, sabudane ki tikki, kuttu ke aate ki puri, aloo ki sabzi, samak ke chawal, fruit cream and fruit chaat. For the parsad, it is a sukha dhaniya and mewa ka bhog.” Well, that’s not all! To welcome the lord, the women of the house dress in yellow or golden colour since it was Krishan’s favourite colour. Fare enough
Chappan bhog is the traditional way to celebrate the Krishan janamdin and for Ashok Kakkar, executive member of Sector 21 temple, the celebrations start a week prior with bhagwath in the temple. “This is a revolving temple and being firm believers of the lord, we start the celebrations a week before Janamashtmi. Everyday a different dish is cooked but on his special day, 52 dishes are cooked and this means even using 52 kind of varied ingredients. One thing that is kept in mind is that Krishna’s favourite doodh and makhan must be an integral part of the meal apart from nuts like kaju, kishmish, barfi etc.” Feast for the fast
Fasting and feasting is the other name of this festival and for the Sood family in Sector 28 this day means cooking a palatable meal. “The fare is cooked early in the morning and first offered to the Lord and after that the members of the family are free to eat it once anytime in the day or evening,” says Shruti Sood. She adds, “To celebrate the day we make ogle ke atta ki roti, aloo, sabudana kheer, milla (a traditional dish that is made from curd and sabudana), khai ki kheer (a variety of rice that resembles suji), bhuji (made out of leaves of arbi), and for sweets there is khuani and affemdana halwa.” With so much to eat, this fast surely is a feast!

The Bollywood import
When a known face of Bollywood decides to hear a Punjabi film script, and then decides to say ‘yes’, we have one reaction —hurray!
Bollywood actor of Tum Bin and Pinjar fame, Priyanshu Chatterjee is the latest addition to the list of Bollywood actors taking a plunge into Punjabi cinema. Priyanshu makes his debut with Sirphire. He plays the role of Inder Gill who doesn’t have a life outside college.
For the actor who is doing pretty well in Bollywood, how did the thought of Punjabi cinema occur? We expect Priyanshu to come up with the predictable one—I always wanted to do Punjabi movie! He laughs, “I come from Delhi, have lived a good part of my life in a locality that had a strong Punjabi influence. When I was narrated the script for Sirphire I said yes, why not.” So, this is where the story begins. “Yes, and I believe it will translate into a more fruitful journey. I have worked hard for Sirphire, I worked on my diction. In fact, off the sets also I would speak in Punjabi. So much so, in due course of time I could make out the difference between Amritsari dialect and how Punjabi is spoken in other parts of Punjab,” adds Priyanshu who did not go full throttle when it came to movies after his first super duper hit Tum Bin. “I did a couple of films after Tum Bin as well, like Pinjar. Then there was a little breather and I did movies like Bhootnath and Julie. I did not go missing,” he breaks the conversation with his laughter. “The release and publicity of the movie depends on producers. I did some great movies, but they were not released or publicised well,” shares Priyanshu. Once bitten twice shy, hope he is playing safe on the Punjabi ground. “I have done justice to my role. Most Punjabi films have actors who are singers. Sirphire stars Punjabi singer like Preet Harpal and Roshan Prince, so I bet the audiences will definitely notice it.” Not to forget, they would come looking for an intense looking new Bollywood addition as well!

On a song
One should never underestimate the importance of music in Hindi films. A film might or might not be a hit but if it has some original music to boast of, half of the work is done; probably the reason why in Mahesh Bhatt’s films music is always given a lot of importance. It’s this fact that Bisakh Jyoti refers to when asked whether he will be able to establish himself in the industry amid cut-throat competition.
“Music is still a very important feature of Hindi cinema. There is always a requirement of new singers and fresh voices. I hope music directors will find my voice suitable,” says the singer, who was in Chandigarh on Wednesday to announce the auditions of Sa Re Ga Ma’s next season. The first runner-up of the singing reality show in 2010, he has so far sung three Bollywood tracks. The title track of No Problem is his claim to fame and next on the cards is Sorry Daddy. “Neither do I have a godfather in the industry nor been able to make contacts. Whatever little I have achieved is on the basis of my hardwork.” Bisakh not just sings well, he also writes his own lyrics and composes music. Since two years Bisakh is awaiting his big break, but he sounds optimistic. “There is work for everyone in the industry, what matters is how well one does it. I hope by the end of this year I am able to create my own identity here.” Keeping our fingers crossed!

Visual treat
Different art forms and themes are the highlight of the two-day visual art exhibition that started at Hotel Aquamarine in Sector 22 on Thursday.
This exhibition, displaying the art work of about 16 artists, is the result of a day-long creative workshop organised by Panchkula based artist Neenu Vij about 10 days ago.
For instance, the portrayal of nature in the art work of Bheem Malhotra, K K Gandhi, and Sadre Alam gives an insight to the inner beauty of our surroundings as well as it inspires everyone to follow the inward journey to seek the real pleasure of life. The work of another artist Shakti Singh internalises the purity of love through the figurative work of Radha-Krishan’s eternal relationship. Artists Naval Kishore and Satwant Sumail’s figurative work depict peace and calmness through the portrayal of female form and femininity. Kamal Sohal’s Beloved in Waiting stands out for its detailing. Then there are artists like Dipto Narayana, Madan Lal, Mona Ghosh and Surinder Lal, who have painted abstract forms, bringing out myriad predicaments of human existence through different themes and colour combinations. The human attachment of material things is the prime focus of Madan Lal’s work which has been beautifully executed by using sharp geometrical lines. Overall the work of all artists, displayed here, present a free flow of ideas and forms. Art critic BN Goswami inaugurated the exhibition. On till Friday.

Punjabi Tadka
The singer stormed the music scene with his sweet voice, deep embedded dimples and good looks. Catch Harbhajan Mann, the Galan goriyan singer, baring his heart and soul.
From singing to acting in Punjabi movies, Harbhajan Mann has worked with eminent directors like Manmohan Singh. He is working on his upcoming album Satrangi Peengh 2
with his brother Gursewak Mann. Harbhajan Mann believes in taking each day as it comes, and music of course is lifeto him. One song I would have loved to sing… Kadi tey has bol veh is the god of music. How I wish I sang the song that created history. I would love to sing it, maybe. If I were marooned on an island… I would like to be left with lot of books, movies, my laptop and mushroom extra cheese pizza. I don’t step out of my house without… My mobile phone, ATM cards One Hollywood actor I would love to romance… Julia Roberts. I gave away my heart to her a long time back. I would like to be re-born as… Harbhajan Mann, the singer actor, probably with some X-factor. I begin my day with… A cup of tea and newspapers One thing I would want to change in myself… I would want to be a better person, so that I can help many more poeple. I wish god gives me an opportunity to do that. One singer I can imitate the best… My brother, Gursewak Mann.

Splendid start
Black is the colour of the season and that's what Varun Bahl showcased on the opening day of Delhi Couture Week on Wednesday. Transparency, layering and handcrafted textures were the key elements that the designer chose to flaunt through his collection.
For the fall 2012-13 haute couture collection, Varun Bahl chose to go minimal with less focus on embroidery and more towards wearbilty. "I attempted to merge the classic evergreen of old India with the outlook of modern Indian dressing tastes. People are wrong when they mix couture and bridal and that's what I wanted to focus on the collection," the designer said after the show. What attracted everybody's attention was the use of black colour. His collection comprises of lots of lehangas, saris, anarkalis in the darker tones. The other key colours in the collection were cobalt to navy blues, olive, coral and reds. The fabric varies from silk net, chiffon, silk velvet and multitude of hand-embroidery technique. The show was jam-packed with Varun's contemporaries giving full support, sitting in the front row. From Poonam Bhagat, Rohit Gandhi, Rahul Khanna, Manav Gangwani to celebrities like Sunanda Pushkar, Aman Ali Khan and buyer Alka Nishar, everyone was there to cheer him up. When the collection was couture, the ramp needed to be different. The designer chose to transform the ramp into a courtyard with pillars at the back. The ambience was perfectly supported by background score that was a mix of thumping beats and soft music. All in all, a nice show to start up the five-day fashion extravaganza.

What’s Ameesha up to?
Ameesha's career may not have shaped up the way she thought it would but we have to admit that she is a pretty girl with a great body and a friendly persona. Why is she still single? For the lack of a good guy! Marriage plans
If people find the right guy for me, I will marry him. Sister’s take
If a role demands for us to be together in one film, I will do it but I cannot be paired opposite Ashmit. Sunny again
We are working together after eleven years in Bhaiyyaji Superhit and Gadar was so much fun and it was such a big hit! I went and hugged Sunny for five minutes on the first day of our new film. It is great to work with him because he is such a warm and humble person. Paradise Street
This is my maiden production and a challenging role for me. I am so excited about it, so is David Dhawan. We are shooting it in Paris because that city has the right vibes and flavour for our movie. And I get to shop a lot when I am not shooting. Paris also gives you the right to make your movie quite fashionable and chic. It is like the city is playing a character in the movie. Shopping list
I love shopping for the latest trends and I love everything: shoes, clothes, bags, glares, lingerie, accessories, you name it! I love myself and take care of my body so I like to dress well in clothes that make me feel good and vibrant.

Cheering for the cause
Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who is in London at the moment, is all praise for each and every Indian Olympian. “I was asked by a journalist in London if I was ‘angry’ with India’s performance at the Olympics. Considering our population we should be winning many more medals.
If smaller countries can, then why can’t we? I’m very “proud” of each and every Indian Olympian! It’s a huge matter of pride and honour for the nation to simply qualify for the Olympics,” he said. The actor also asked everyone to encourage our sportsperson and not demoralise them with negativity. “We should be encouraging our sportsman/women not continuously demoralising them with negativity. They’ve made it to the Olympics…that’s HUGE! Regardless of whether they win or not, they’ve already made the nation proud. The encouragement and positivity the British team receives from their public and media is amazing and something to learn from,” he added.

Together or not?
Jennifer Aniston's publicist has shot down reports suggesting that the actress has ended her relationship with writer/actor Justin Theroux. The split story graces the cover of the new issue of a magazine, but the star's representative insists very little of what has been written is true.
"It's once again just another fabrication to sell magazines and has no relationship to reality,” said
Wonderwall. Insiders say Jen dropped the ultimatum bomb on her lover at Santa Monica's Giorgio Baldi restaurant on July 11. Apparently, she told him she needed a certain kind of commitment or else! And according to the source, all Justin could do was shrug his shoulders! The source says Jen knew it was over right then and there. "That was the moment the writing was on the wall for Jen. It crystalised in her mind that Justin isn’t the one for her. Justin pleaded for a second chance, but for her the love is gone. Even worse, sources claim that Jennifer stalked Justin after she broke up with him and found him seeking comfort in the arms of another woman, referred to only by her first name. "He got together with Heidi within days of Jen leaving. It seems like Justin couldn’t wait to be rid of Jen so he could cut loose." Picking apart the tabloid story, a rival publication reports the "mystery blonde" Theroux was spotted dining with recently was old friend Amy Sedaris.

A role that matters
Pretty girl Sonarika Bhadoria who made an entry in TV with a romantic drama is currently seen in the serial Devon Ke Dev Mahadev as Goddess Parvati. Thrilled to be a part of the hit show, she talks about being an actor, few flops
and new highs.
Did you always want to be an actress? I never thought of it as such. But my family and friends wanted me to become an actress. As luck would have it, I happened to audition for producer Rajan Shahi’s serial for the lead role but due to complications the show
was never aired. It must have been tough as your first show ended abruptly? Yes. I enjoyed being part of Tum Dena Saath Mera but it didn’t run for long. So how is the experience on Mahadev? Great, though I didn’t want to take on the part. I was scared of how will I be able to pull off playing the role of a Goddess. I also didn’t want to do a show right after Tum Dena Saath Mera as I wanted a break. But now that I see the results I am very happy. How different is it to do a mythological show? The lines are tough and my body language has to be apt for the role. What is the best part about doing
this show? I am a devotee of lord Shiva, so playing this role has helped me know more about his life. What about your personal life? I am not seeing anyone yet. I am single and working hard on my career for now.
