MC contractors threaten to halt work on all projects

Faced with severe resource crunch, the Municipal Corporation (MC) faces the threat of all ongoing and proposed development works coming to a halt as contractors have expressed their inability to continue with the work unless their payments, long overdue, were released.

Now, students of government schools will not have to walk or hitch a ride to go to school. As per the directions of the education department, students of government schools would also have to take a bus or an autorickshaw. The Central government has released the budget for students of Punjab in this regard.

Punjab government will ruin industry: Veopar Sena
Jagraon, August 9
Veopar Sena Punjab, an organisation of traders and medium-scale industrialists in the state, has condemned the Punjab government for its anti-industry policies. Ravinder Dhir, president of the organisation, said it seemed the government had made up its mind to ruin the industries in the state. It became clear from the decisions taken by the government that would further increase burden on the already reeling industry in the state, he said.

A woman today levelled allegations against SPS Apollo Hospital, saying she was not allowed to meet her newborn till she deposited hospital bill worth Rs 75,000 for her caesarean section and post-delivery medical expenses.

Taking serious note of the rehri mafia unlawfully occupying a children park on the Metro Road in the Jamalpur locality here, the Punjab Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Director, Local Self Government, Punjab, and the MC administration before the next date of hearing on November 22, 2012.

Residents want fencing along Sidhwan Canal 
Ludhiana, August 9
Perturbed over the death of a 26-year-old youth who drowned in Sidhwan Canal, the Country Homes Welfare Society along with the residents of South City and Sukhmani Enclave, met Akali MLA Darshan Singh Shivalik, requesting him to arrange for fencing along the canal to avoid such unfortunate incidents in future.

After claiming to be close to cracking the murder case of 21- year-old KFC employee Maninder Kaur, the police today went into a shell and did not divulge any further details in the case.

Taxation Dept gears up for online filing

On one side, the industry is against the online filing of the intra-state trade, but on the other the excise and taxation department is all geared up to start the online filing of the details pertaining to the trade carried out within the state. It will be mandatory for all to file the online information from August 10 onwards.

Increase in power tariff condemned

The three parties comprising the Sanjha Morcha, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) and Punjab Peoples Party (PPP) yesterday staged a dharna at the Mini Secretariat here to register their protest against 12 per cent increase in the power tariff, additional VAT on sugar and other proposals to levy taxes on several other items.

Liquor seized in special drive
Ludhiana, August 9
A huge quantity of liquor was seized during a special drive conducted by Samrala Police here today. The police officials laid a special checkpoint (nakka) in the main chowk of the town in a drive against drug peddling and liquor smuggling.

Clash over land dispute
Jagraon, August 9
Six persons were injured in two separate clashes over land dispute at Kaunke Kalan and Bhamipura villages near Jagraon. All the injured persons have been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Jagraon.

Woman held with habit-forming drugs

The Raikot police has arrested a woman along with a huge quantity of habit -forming drugs. The accused has been identified as Karamjit Kaur, wife of Kulwant Singh of Bassian village, situated on the Jagraon-Raikot Road.

ASI Sukhwinder Singh shot himself with his service revolver at his official residence on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. The police said no suicide note had been found.
