A smile goes a mile…
Words are cut, chopped and grated to finer pieces, faster than a food processor. Before you can catch the pun in his line, he has moved on to baking another conversation, peppered, garnished and served well before time.
Shekhar Suman, the face that you probably remember with a long curve, ever since you stopped at any of the comedy serials, can be a stiff upper lip, as he says, "It is not easy to make me laugh. With time my sense of humour has become so evolved that sometimes I need to be told by the directors of the show to laugh." While you try to come up with all kinds of anecdotes just to see his reaction, Shekhar Suman takes his seat on the judging panel of Like Ok's new show Laugh India Laugh. In Chandigarh along with a contestant Rajiv Goldy, Shekhar lists a hundred reasons to smile and most importantly why is he twice lucky when it comes to satire. First things first I have been part of many laughter shows, but Life Ok's Laugh India Laugh is an effort to make the people of India forget their problems and laugh their hearts out. The contestants coming from all across India and Pakistan will ensure they make life lighter for the audiences. Keep smiling Life takes each one of us through different routes, different highways; making things easier and tougher or vice-versa. I had to go through the same pattern till the time I found solace in laughter. Laughter definitely is a microscopic part of what I am, but then I can't deny that it is an extension of my personality. We are too sensitive, too superstitious and too trying-to-be-modern country that a bit of laughter will only help. Besides, I think we have gone through enough, it is time we laughed! Not to forget this magic potion that cleanses the system. Homeo physician People often ask whether I am the same man who does comedy. Laughter, as I said, is in me, does that mean I keep laughing the whole day long. I am a diametrically opposite person. I think I have never made people laugh; I just try to wake them up. Inherently, I do many things other than this. I am an actor; a crusader as my wife calls me. I am just like a physician who is practicing homeopathy for a while! Hope I haven't overstayed There came a time in life when I had to choose between bad films and good television, that's how the comedy shows started happening by chance. I didn't expect it to last this much, I hope I haven't overstayed here. For some extra information, I am directing a film and thinking of casting Sunny Leone in it. Are you still alive! My comedy is on the satirical side. I have lampooned just about everyone, but no one took it personally other than one-odd occasion when Pramod Mahajan was miffed with me, but he later hugged and things were fine. I am not a messiah, but whatever I say I have to do that fearlessly. I bump into people who ask me, hey Shekhar you are still alive after all that you do on your show! jasmine@tribunemail.com

Passion for fashion
Not everyone can turn around tight pants, open shoes and upturned collars into new-street chic like he did in Bodyguard. B-town stylist Ashley Rebello has got a couple of trade secrets up his sleeve; secrets that he’s all set to share with the INIFD students. “The main thing is that you don’t have to do anything very different. You just have to do something that is slightly different and that brings in a lot of changes.” For he’s the brand ambassador or as he likes to put it, “mentor.” “I tell every budding designer to follow their heart, invent and re-invent. Have your USP.”
Ill-dressed vs well-dressed After all it’s been a “long journey” in the fashion industry starting from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander; an era when the concept of a stylist didn’t exist. Or perhaps, with some it still doesn’t exist! “I feel Tabu is a very non-fashionable person. You have to tell her what saree and shoes to pick; she’s like why and then you have to prod her.” The list of the ill-dressed, we bet, far surpasses the list of the well-dressed. Then there’s Neil Nitin Mukesh. He adds, “I think he’s got very set idea about dressing up and clothes, he could do with a stylist and Asin needs a lot of tips.’ He’s not mincing words, it’s not even off the record and don’t we love it! With the likes of Chandni Bar, Dabangg, Ready, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na…he’s got a ringside view of the stars’ style quotient and is well-qualified to comment. “I feel Salman Khan is the most stylish in the film industry. Apart from him there is Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan. Among ladies, I’d say Sonali Bendre knows how to carry off anything. Then there are Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor.” Career graph Lined up is KLPD starring Vivek Oberoi and Mallika Sherawat. And then there’s “Sajid Nadiadwala’s film with Jackie Shroff’s son and Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, as also Dabangg 2.” He adds, “For Ek Tha Tiger we’ve all worked very hard. Nobody would have seen Salman Khan in cargo pants before. We gave a used look to all the clothes. We’ve explored the mufflers look as well.” It’s not the producer, not even the stars that make him sign on the dotted line, unless it happens to be Slaman Khan! “There are certain movies you can’t say no to, for example if it’s a Salman Khan movie. The subject of the movie matters to me and also the director. For instance I enjoyed doing Madhur Bhandarkar’s films Chandani Bar and Page 3.” Just before he’s surrounded by the eager beaver fashion professionals in the making, here are a parting tip or two. “In the monsoon always carry an extra t-shirt and a perfume like I do, and avoid whites. Salwars are back in fashion, even more than the churidaars.” manpriya@tribunemail.com

Who’s scared of Sunny Leone?
Newcomer Bidita Bag who makes her debut as the female lead in the upcoming comedy From Sydney With Love releasing in the first week of August, gets furious when asked about her film clashing with the release of pornstar Sunny Leone’s sizzling debut Jism 2.
When questioned about the clash, Bidita, who has modeled for many successful brands and campaigns, fumes, “What can Sunny show in the film that she hasn’t already shown to the world? On the contrary, I have a lot to show, that too with my body covered. Subtle sensuality is far more explosive than raw sexuality.” “Moreover, Sunny is not even the topmost pornstar in the world! So what’s the fuss all about,” Bidita reacts with a wink, adding that we can consider keeping that off the record. Such stinging statements from this new spunk-chick in town are sure to ruffle a few feathers! Wonder is how the fiery Leone will react to the ‘insult’. From Sydney with Love is releasing on August 3.

Acting can wait, production it is
Uday Chopra has decided to put his acting career on the back burner and says his entire focus is on his home banner Yash Raj Films' (YRF) Hollywood wing, based in Los Angeles.
"I feel that this (production) is the next thing I can do. I feel that I can't go beyond a certain point (as an actor). I cannot become an Aamir Khan today, I know that. I can't become that big a star, no matter what I do," said Uday, who was last seen in 2010 film Pyaar Impossible. Nevertheless, he is trying to break new grounds now. "I am ambitious and I want to try something new. Maybe doing what my father (Yash Chopra) has always done, might be lucky for me. I'm concentrating on the production part. I'm taking a backseat in terms of acting. I might just do a film here or there, but mostly I will be behind the camera," he added. He is currently the CEO of YRF Entertainment, which has already completed The Longest Week. — IANS

Bachchan on business
It takes a good business sense for an actor to become a good producer. A perfect example is set by Abhishek Bachchan who believes in the simple formula of making quality films within the right budget and giving box-office collections prime importance over moolah from corporate tie-ups and sale of satellite rights.
"Each script has a budget and I think it is important to budget your film correctly," Abhishek said in an interview. For instance, his first film Paa was made in just Rs 15 crore and he was lauded by the industry for making such a movie with such a low budget. Paa, which released in 2009, won not just critical acclaim but also walked away with a National Award for best feature film in Hindi and the best actor award for Abhishek's father, megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The business dynamics have since changed. Nowadays, filmmakers recover most of their money by selling off their film's satellite rights and music rights and through various tie-ups, making box-office success secondary. But Abhishek begs to differ. "Box office receipts still account for 60 to 70 per cent of the entire collection. That will always be the bulk of the business. Satellite is still very speculative. Right now satellite rights are very good for the producers, but after two to three years it might fall," said the 36-year-old, who has acted in successful films like Dhoom, Guru, Dostana and, most recently, Bol Bachchan. "The emphasis has to be always on making a quality film. If your film is not good, then selling satellite rights and music rights won't help," he added. It is interesting how actors are moving beyond their characters in a film into the business aspects of the movies, and Abhishek says it is a positive trend. "That's just the way the dynamics of the industry work today! Stakes have become so high, cost of production has gone up so much that I think actors believe it's beneficial to be a part of it and become partners in the production houses. "At the end of the day, we are responsible for the work that we are doing, we are responsible for our film," he said. Abhishek believes in giving 100 per cent of himself to film promotions as well! In fact, during the promotions of Delhi-6 in 2009, he broke the Guinness' world record for maximum public appearances in 12 hours. "My attitude towards it is that you spend so much time and energy in making a film, then why not spend an equal amount of time and energy promoting and marketing the film as well," he said. Meanwhile, after the stupendous success of Bol Bachchan, the actor is gearing up to begin shooting for Dhoom 3, which will see Aamir Khan in a negative role. — IANS

Did Stewart cheat on Pattinson?
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's relationship is in trouble amid claims that the actress cheated on her Twilight co-star with the director of Snow White.
Stewart, 22, is said to have had a brief fling with Rupert Sanders recently. Sanders, 41, directed her in Snow White and the Huntsman. British director is married and has two young children with model Liberty Ross. "Kristen is absolutely devastated. It was a mistake and a complete lapse in judgment," a source said. "She never meant to hurt anyone. She's a good person who just made a bad choice," the source added. Stewart and Pattinson, 26, were photographed together just days ago at Comic-Con. The British actor had even hinted about a future marriage. The couple first met on the Twilight set and reports began almost immediately that they were dating. After being initially coy, they became open about their relationship. Meanwhile, a magazine has claimed that they have photographs of Stewart and Sanders together. — PTI

Exotic charm
Jumping off a high cliff, diving into nothingness, swimming in icy cold waters - these aren't the only things that define the adventurous side of you. A string of beads strung together on an animal sinew or an iron or copper mixed oval anklet, brings out another adventurous side. From the indigenous tribes across India to your dressing table, the oval, sphere, round, concave, beaded jewellery has always been a great addition to the wardrobe!
Chokers, bangles, necklaces, earrings, toe-rings, anklets, with tribal motifs, ethnic with the right mix of contemporary; tribal jewellery cut out in stone, wood, natural gemstones and stones is single-handedly a fashion statement. Coming from the tribes in Jharkhand, Nagaland and Madhya Pradesh, Anaha Jewellery in Chandigarh has the original and copies of tribal jewellery at their recently opened store. Says Harmanjot Gosal, CEO and art curator of the brand, "The original tribal jewellery that includes pendants and anklets is not for sale, but the reproductions certainly are." He tells us what pieces qualify under this category. "Tribal accessories and jewellery are made with simple metals - brass, iron, copper, pewter (alloy of tin and copper), silver-toned copper alloy or oxidized white metal alloy - mixed with small amounts of silver and gold. Starting from Rs 500 and going up to Rs 10,000, this jewellery adds a touch of ethnicity to the dressing. A major part of this jewellery comes in semi-precious stones like carnelian and feroza. Kaudi jewellery also forms a big part." Most of these pieces are particular to a geographical area, but when you are wearing them all you need to know is -don't go overboard with it. Vandana Singh, city-based designer who creates ethnic suits and tribal jewellery under Aamara Creations gives a tip on tribal jewellery before joining the beads! "Tribal accessories are heavy and chunky pieces that add an ethnic touch, but if you pile up too many such pieces chances are that you will look like a lost member of the tribe," quips Vandana. More on the perfect fashion accessory, she adds, "There are different styles in tribal jewellery - African, Egyptian, South American and Native American ones as well. And each one has a particular design and cut to it." While the African tribal piece is made with beads and precious stones, the Bohemian style has feathers and the Native Americans use metals, hardwood, vegetable fibres or man-made material like beadwork to design necklaces, earrings, bracelets and pins. The off and on exhibitions happening in the city is one place where you can pick Ladakhi, Rajasthani and north-eastern tribal jewellery. A perfect match with any wardrobe, they look the best when worn in minimalist manner. Though natural colours are something that most of these pieces come in, but possibility of finding them in strong fluorescent colours cannot be ruled out. "With an exotic feel to it, most women like to team the pieces up with contemporary dresses. It gives that international and exotic feel," shares Ritu Kochhar, director INIFD-8. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Doc Talk Let's face it, everyone sweats and sometimes we all get smelly. Sweating is our body's way of cooling down and releasing toxins. Body odour comes from bacteria that live on us and overgrow on our warm sweat. Sweat is an important human secretion and each person has not only unique finger prints, taste buds but also a unique different sweat odour. But everything in daily life socially and mentally goes haywire suddenly if this secretion becomes abnormally excessive or has a bad odour. We are a culture obsessed with smelling nice. Take a stroll down the deodorant isle at any supermarket and the options are endless. A recent survey revealed that not only adults but 50 per cent of children below 11 years use deodorants. For most, deodorants are part of daily morning routine. It is also part of a person's gym routine and going-out routine. There are days when one tends to apply deodorant 3-4 times. Although an underarm deodorant is one of the best ways of tackling offensive body odour, you need to be aware of the health effects if you are not using the right type of underarm deodorant for your armpits. You should always check out the quality of the underarm deodorant. Some of the common problems faced by people when they use the wrong type of deodorants are --itching of the skin, rashes on the skin, burning sensation and redness. Some deodorants may cause serious health risks such as aluminum neurotoxicity, breast cancer and renal dysfunction. You should avoid using underarm deodorant in the following cases: * If you have open cuts under your armpits. Wait for the cuts to heal completely before you actually try out underarm deodorants. * Also avoid using deodorants if you have just shaved your armpits. You will get a burning sensation on your skin or face some other kind of skin irritation after you have applied deodorants on your armpits. * A small percentage of people are allergic to aluminium and may experience contact dermatitis when exposed to aluminium containing deodorants. * Deodorants should not be used by patients of breast cancer and those with family history of breast cancers. * People with renal dysfunction should also avoid aluminium containing deodorants. Keep the following things in mind when you shop for a good deodorant-Avoid toxic chemicals. Avoid all deodorants with aluminum, parabens, chlorohydrate, propylene glycol and triclosan. Super-sonic fun
Kya Super Kool Hai Hum, the slapstick entertainer, comes up with yet another fun track Dil garden garden ho gaya, which has Vishal Dadlani crooning in his high-pitched voice, well supported by modern techno sounds. The track has a very youthful touch and is bound to be popular. Mayur Puri's lyrics are casual and have an everyday language that accentuates the fun element. It also has a remixed version, which isn't very different from the original track. Some electronic beats have been added to the composition, but the remixed song fails to create the desired effect. It's better to stick to the original.
Funny track It is a hilarious track which is a true reflection of the funny rom-com. Vishal Dadlani's extra piercing vocals throw in modulating tones that match well with techno-funk electronic fillers.
— Akshita Sharma, student, PU Nonsensical lyrics One needs to wear no thinking cap when one listens to this track as the mood is completely nonsensical. The lyrics go well with the funny caricatures. It has multi-coloured richness, flashy costumes which add up to the fun elements. The flamboyant on-screen display is a sheer joy to watch.
— Naina Singh, housewife Retro rewind This track has already got the whole country dancing on its tune. Rightfully so, as this song sung by Vishal Dadlani and composed by Sachin-Jigar is truly funny, funky and very catchy. The track is really peppy and close to the retro theme.
— Swati Bhalla, student, MCM College (As told to Sabia Talwar)

Neighbour's envy satish narula The love for plants is increasing with every passing day. The horticulturally conscious people are now adding plants to every available space in their garden. The craze is such that even those living in flat culture are finding it difficult to resist the temptation of keeping a few pots braving the adverse conditions with respect to summer heat, winter cold, water shortage and even strong winds. But when you have the love for the plants and are fond of gardening then why have the routine plants. Visiting the home of a garden lover is always a pleasure, not only for the visitor but for the host too. The host lets no opportunity miss in talking about his or her proud possessions. But if a person visiting you also has the same collection of plants, then it is better not to talk about it or only in case where notes are to be exchanged about it growing. The times have changed now. The plant species are being changed in the gardens like changing fashion. Why not then add something different to your garden. This way you also have an edge over your, neighbour. With every planting season, one must visit local nurseries. Spend some time and you will definitely find something new. Even when no new plant is located, one can find variation in the existing common species. For example, if you are a plant lover, schefflera is a must in your garden. Those who are a little different have variegated schefflera, the one with yellow specks on the leaves. And those who are absolutely different have shefflera with variegated and lobed leaves! But for such chance introductions one has to have a hunter's eye. If you have to grow a rose in the garden, then go in for plain one coloured blooms. There is a large variation as spotted blooms, bi-colour blooms and speckled blooms in various hues and combinations. You may not get such plants in nurseries by name but mostly the roses are sold in nurseries by type and colour of bloom for which the nurserymen keep identification. Another very hardy and beautiful species is asparagus that forms a beautiful pot and basket plant. The one you normally have is the weak trailing plant with shining needles. But have you heard of the Mayeri species. Don't worry, the nurserymen know this plant by its technical name. The beauty lies in the shape and structure of this new species where the emerging stems are stout and have the leaves arranged in a manner that it looks like fox tail. They keep emerging as suckers. You have seen golden Duranta growing everywhere now a days but try the variegated form. It's different. (Dr Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |
