PTU counselling: few takers for private colleges, GZS fares better
Bathinda, July 19 Private colleges situated in Deon, Aklia and Talwandi Sabo do not have decent number of admissions to boast of at the end of the first counselling. These institutes are now looking forward to completion of second counselling after which the management quota seats would be filled charging capitation fees. Sources in the PTU said applications for only 75 per cent of the total seats available in the state have been received. Last year too, a number of colleges had vacant seats and the situation was expected to be worse this year. As per the in-charge of admission cell, PTU GZS Campus, Prof Karanvir Singh, the institute has admitted 270 students so far and the highest rank holder is the student who secured 17,000 rank in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). “Last year, we had 190 admissions at the end of first round. This year, the number is more as GZS campus has been declared an academic campus of the PTU. Students are more interested in pursuing engineering at an institute that has highly-educated faculty — a fact that the private institutes can’t boast of,” he added. The GZS campus has 510 seats in engineering trades of civil, electrical, electronics, mechanical, computer science, textile and civil engineering second shift, for which classes would be held in the evening. Baba Farid Engineering College has 420 seats in
B Tech, of which, the institute claims, less than 25 per cent have been occupied in the first counseling. “All our seats had got filled at the time of counselling as students had mentioned the name of our institute at the time of filling the forms. But less than 25 per cent students turned up for admission,” said the chairman of Baba Farid Group of Institutes, Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal. He added that PTU counselling holds little significance for private engineering colleges as these colleges have 33 per cent management quota seats that are filled after the varsity’s counselling roaster ends. Last year, PTU had three rounds of counselling, which has now been reduced to two. Dhaliwal said PTU had been suggested to run counselling for management seats parallel to the general ones, but the suggestion evoked no response. “Students securing high ranks in entrance test prefer government institutes, while those left behind have no option but to go for management seats. It is better to run counselling for quota seats parallel to the general session,” he reasoned. The officials of Guru Ram Dass Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lehra Bega, however, refused to divulge the figure on number of admissions saying the management had directed them not to give any information. The college has 240 seats in trades of mechanical, electrical, computer science and electronics. |
Students give Malwa institutes a miss
Bathinda, July 19 "Big companies visit institutes in prominent cities with better road connectivity and hence these institutes have better placement records," said Anshu Kataria, director of a group of colleges near Chandigarh. In their bid to get better placement and for better lifestyle, students avoid institutes in the Malwa region. — TNS |
Power tariff hike okay, arrear not: Industrialists
Bathinda, July 19 With the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) hiking the tariff by 12.08
per cent, all industrial units would be required to pay the arrears from April 2012 till date. “Consumers will have to pay in instalments, the number and extent of which will be decided by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in electricity bills,” added PSPCL officials. Raman Watts, chairman, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bathinda, said the tariff hike is justified but the arrears are not. Another industrialist added that the state power department has failed to provide uninterrupted power supply to the industry in the last four-five years. Besides, the duty on electricity was increased from 10 to 13 per cent.
Then an entry tax of 12.5 per cent on diesel generator sets was also imposed besides five per cent electricity duty from captive consumption. The industrialists said the state government did not take industrial sector into confidence before introducing the hike in power tariff. |
Pvt docs start notifying TB cases to health authorities
Bathinda, July 19 It may be mentioned here that through a letter, dated May 7, 2012, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had made it mandatory for the healthcare providers to notify every single TB case to the local health authorities. Talking to the Bathinda Tribune here today, district TB officer, Dr Ashok Monga, said three doctors from the city, Dr Vitull Gupta, Dr KK Nohria and Dr Parmod Singla had notified 22 case of tuberculosis in the month of June to the district health authorities. Dr Monga further added that Dr Parmod Singla had notified 14 TB cases (seven male and seven female) in June this year. He said out of these 14 patients, nine were below the age of 30 years. Dr KK Nohria had notified seven cases of tuberculosis (three male and four female) in June. Of these cases, three patients were below the age of 30 years. Dr Vitull K Gupta had notified one case of tuberculosis in June to the district health authorities. The patient was a 74-year-old man. Dr Monga also made an appeal to all the healthcare providers of the district to notify every single TB case, visiting them for treatment, as per the proforma provided to them. He said the healthcare providers were required to fill the proforma, regarding TB cases, including the name of the patient, age, sex, full address, date of diagnosis and date of starting the treatment. He also said as per the directions of the government, the patient’s identity would be kept secret. Besides, there would be no interference by the health authorities in the treatment of the patient, he added. Dr Monga said the notification of TB cases would be helpful to the health authorities in preparing the data regarding total number of tuberculosis cases in the district. He also added that the information about the tuberculosis cases would also be helpful in providing proper diagnosis of the disease and decreasing the number of drug resistant TB cases. The doctors are of the view that with the mandatory notification of TB cases, no TB case would be left unreported in the future. Fact file

Traffic chaos marks the road outside railway station
Bathinda, July 19 Those visiting the eating joints outside the station park their vehicles in front of the shops, thereby bringing the traffic to a halt, which in turn, results in serpentine queues of vehicles. The situation worsens when passengers exit the railway station and board the vehicles waiting to receive them. Though the city traffic police has launched a special drive against the traffic rule violators and has been towing away wrongly-parked vehicles and imposing penalties, it seems the authorities have failed to turn their attention to the area outside the railway station. Gogi, owner of a shop outside the railway station, said the traffic chaos on the road had become a nuisance to the commuters. He added that the shopkeepers were quite upset over the everyday fights and quarrels on the road. He said the shopkeepers have been demanding to utilise the railway parking, the entrance to which has been blocked for a long time now. The railway authorities had said they would give the parking contract to someone but the process was still not complete, he added. “Whenever one of the city buses, a heavy vehicle takes a turn on the T-point outside the station, the entire traffic on the road comes to a standstill. The heavy vehicles also spend a lot of time in taking the U-turn as the autos parked on the road leave little space for these vehicles,” said Subeg Singh, a motorist. Kotwali SHO, Jaspal Singh, said no major incident of quarrel had ever been brought to his notice. He said a large number of passengers came out of the railway station everytime a train arrives and minor skirmishes were natural. He added that using the parking area at the station, which is lying closed, may solve the situation. “It was a tough situation last night when I went to buy food from an eating joint,” said Sukhjeewan, a resident of Model Town. He said a white Santro got past his scooter from the right and blocked his way as it stopped outside a dhaba. “As I tried to get past from the left, the scooter’s kick came in contact with the car’s bumper and the woman raised a hue and cry,” he said. |
This is the right time to be a part of the Punjabi film industry: Mahie Gill
Bathinda, July 19 Actress Mahie Gill and singer-actor Gippy Grewal, along with the other actors of the film were in the city on Thursday to promote their film. But unlike the other film promotions which are done at city's malls, this promotional activity was conducted at the Malwa College. While the students jostled to get up, close and personal with the stars and be clicked with them, the actors requested them to watch their film. Gippy regaled the audience with the latest of his music tracks. Mahie Gill, who shot to fame with her role in the Abhay Deol-Kalki Koechlin starrer 'Dev.D', did a critically acclaimed role in 'Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster' and was also seen in Irrfan Khan's 'Paan Singh Tomar', said she was upbeat about the way Punjabi films were being made these days. Refusing to term 'Carry On Jatta' as a film that marks her comeback in the Punjabi film industry, Mahie maintained that it would have been a comeback only if she had left the industry. "I had been getting offers all this while as well, but they didn't interest me as much as some of the Bollywood projects did. I am glad Bollywood directors have been casting me in author-backed roles." "Look at the way Punjabi films are being made and marketed these days. It feels this is the best time to be here. Doing Punjabi films is a lot of fun as most of them are romantic comedies. During the shoot of 'Carry on Jatta', the director of the film, Sumeep Kang, asked me to have fun while acting," she added. Singer-actor Gippy Grewal made his foray into Bollywood with his song 'Angrezi Beat', which was part of the music of the recently-released film, 'Cocktail'. Praising the success of Neeru-Bajwa-Diljit Dosanjh starrer, 'Jatt and Juliet', Gippy said he was happy about the roaring success of the film. "It doesn't matter whose film it is, whether it is mine, Diljit or some other actor's. The fact is that it did very well at the box office and it is a good thing for Punjabi film industry." Talking about the storyline of the film, Gippy said, "It is about a boy from a village who starts living in the city and how he lies to get his lady love. And then to cover his first lie, he has to keep telling lies again and again. The film shows how a single lie can make one a persistent liar." |
