Suspecting woman, husband kills her

The suspicion of infidelity led to the murder of a 40-year-old woman at Kirpal Singh Nagar, near Jodhewal Basti, here today. The incident took place here this morning. Mohd Aseem (45) smashed a brick repeatedly on the head of his wife Salma following a heated argument.

Woman pushed to death
Ludhiana, July 19
A 25-year-old pregnant woman who was allegedly pushed from the staircase by her husband at Jamalpur late last night, succumbed to her injuries here today. The victim, Meena from Uttarakhand, married Anil Kumar nearly three years ago.

The case of death of a Jagraon youth, whose body was found under mysterious circumstances last morning, took a new twist today, with the family holding the deceased’s wife responsible for the death.

Man shoots neighbour
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 19
The only breadwinner of a family was shot dead by a member of a neighbouring family following a tiff over drainage of waste water into a sewage pit here today. All three adult male members of the other family were booked under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

All not well with MC, says Information Commission

Taking serious note of the careless approach of the municipal corporation (MC) in dealing with applications under the RTI Act, the state Information Commission has observed that all is not well with the functioning of the MC and a mess has been prevailing, especially in the wing dealing with RTI applications.

Thousands of employees put on election duty during Assembly elections in Punjab on January 30 are yet to get remuneration. The departments concerned have failed to disburse the dues among employees even almost six months after the elections due to their lackadaisical attitude.

40-year-old woman crushed to death

A 40-year-old woman was crushed to death under the wheels of an overspeeding truck near the Arora Cinema here today. The victim, Anita of Ambedkar Colony, near Model Town Extension, was returning home with her brother-in-law on a motorcycle after visiting her relatives at Shimlapuri.

Fearing tow-away, man hit by bus
Ludhiana, July 19
A panic-stricken 40-year-old man, running to his vehicle on seeing a tow-away truck, was hit was by a PRTC bus near Preet Palace here today. The man sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital. His condition was stated to be critical.

Police close to solving double murder case
Ludhiana, July 19
Two days after the double murder that rocked the city, the police today claimed that it was inches from cracking the case. On July 17, Narinder Kumar Anand and his granddaughter Reva were found murdered at a house in Punjab Mata Nagar.

Theft of power meters on rise

Policeman beaten up while mediating
Jagraon, July 19
High drama was witnessed at the local Raikot road past night when a cop was allegedly beaten with his own stick by a person. The incident happened when the cop intervened to resolve a clash between two sides.

Residents suffer as MC fails to repair Boparai road

The Boparai road, dug up for the installation of sewerage pipes two months back, has not been levelled and reconstructed thereafter. Resultantly, it has become a source of inconvenience for the residents and the commuters, especially the school children, as the road leads to four major schools of Doraha.

Changes made in VAT return filing

All those filing VAT quarterly return will now be required to give only one cheque instead of three as earlier. The department has also updated their software and as a result e-forms have also been changed.

Sunil Shetty, Rajpal Yadav in city to promote movie

Actor Sunil Shetty was in the city for the promotion of his movie ‘Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai’ along with Rajpal Yadav and director of the movie Rajnish Raj Thakur. Sunil Shetty said that his character in the movie is someone who wants to make a movie to raise social issues, like rape victims and their struggle, but the movie ends up becoming something else.

Opening of liquor vends
Students, residents stage protest

Students of Florence Public School and residents of Janakpuri street number 3 are up in arms against setting up of a liquor vend near the school and held a protest today. About 200 students and residents, along with politicians of the city sat on a dharna in front of the proposed shops for liquor vend today.

Residents of colonies up in arms against contractor
Ludhiana, July 19
Residents of more than dozen colonies around Maharishi Valmiki Nagar, a residential scheme developed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), have raised a banner of revolt against opening of a liquor vend, which has been opened in the built-up booths, constructed in the commercial pocket of the colony.

Health dept gets 3,200-l kerosene for fogging
Ludhiana, July 19
To combat with breeding of Aedes mosquito and its larvae in stagnant water, which is responsible for spreading of dengue, the health department has finally succeeded in getting sanction of 3,200 liters of kerosene oil from the director, food and civil supply controller, Punjab.

On one hand, the state government is claiming to provide better education in government schools to compete with private educational institutions, and on the other hand the students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bilga, are being forced to clean the rooms and verandas of the school before attending their classes.

Ludhiana: The central sub-committee on "Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops," in its 62nd meeting, approved the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) developed variety "Punjab Basmati 2" for notification.

Plantation drive
Under the supervision of Dr Ajit Singh Chawla, Senior Medical Officer, Primary Health Center, Kum Kalan, a plantation drive was initiated in the block. Dr Chawla said that about 500 samplings of different varieties were planted on the first day. The target is to plant as many as 5000 saplings within a week.

A team of the health department today destroyed rotten fruits and vegetables at the CMC road, Baba Thhan Singh road and Shingar Cinema road areas. The team also made fruit and vegetable sellers aware of the ill-effects of rotten eatables. People were also distributed pamphlets related to water and vector-borne diseases.

Congress condemns Punjab power tariff hike

Denying that there is any factionalism in the Congress, the Congress Legislature Party leader, Sunil Jakhar, during his Ludhiana visit yesterday, said there could be a difference of opinion among the party functionaries. "When there are too many senior people, there may be a difference of opinion," he added.

1 held, one revolver recovered from accused’s possession
Ludhiana, July 19
The police has nabbed a notorious fugitive criminal, who along with his accomplices was committing robberies at gunpoint. The accused, identified as Tajinderpal Singh, alias Bunty, was arrested from the T-point in Civil Lines area by CIA-I following a tip-off.

Three injured in attack
Ludhiana, July 19
Three persons were injured following an attack by armed assailants at a car workshop located near the Orient Cinema in BRS Nagar here today. The injured, identified as Dibag Singh, owner of JS Automobile, Tajinder Singh and Sucha Singh, a business partner and an employee, respectively, were rushed to the Civil Hospital.
