Policeman electrocuted
Ambala, July 12 Kuldeep Singh, brother of the deceased, said Surender was spraying water on the walls of his under-constructed house when, due to earthing, current flowed in the walls. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital at Ambala where he was declared brought dead. The police handed over the body to relatives after the postmortem. The victim was a resident of Ismailpur village close to Ambala City. |

90-yr-old donates body
Ambala, July 12 Singh's eyes were donated to Madhav Netra Bank,
Ambala. Singh had filled pledge forms before his death and he had asked his family to donate his body part after his death. Singh, who expired on July 10, was a progressive farmer. Shamsher Singh, his son and advocate in Punjab and Haryana High Court, fulfilled the last wishes of his father. Around 10 people of Ambala have donated their bodies and eyes after their death while a number of peoples have filled the pledge forms. |

Kalka-Shimla trains resume
Kalka, July 12 Following which, the department of railways had to cancel three trains from Shimla to Kalka. It took seven hours to clear the rail track. Today, all trains departed to Shimla on time.

Day two: Lawyers observe strike
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 12 The lawyers led by Amardeep Singh Dharni, president of District Bar Association, organised the dharna in front the judicial complex. They did not allow any lawyer to enter the complex. They raised slogans against the Union government. Dharni said the proposed law is against the interests of the lawyer fraternity. DC: Dispose of revenue cases promptly
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 12 The old cases must be decided at the earliest, he added. He directed the Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars to ensure that the mutation of registered deed is done within a week so that the people do not face difficulty in getting a computerised copy of the mutation. He told them to decide the recovery cases related to different departments on priority basis. If any revenue official did not decided recovery cases he would be held responsible. Taking a strong note of absence of certain officials from the meeting, the DC directed to write to their headquarters for disciplinary action. He asked the officials to bring complete progressive report of their respective departments. He also asked them to complete the ongoing development projects in their areas on priority basis and to send the utilisation certificates. He directed SDMs to visit the elementary schools to check the quality of mid-day meal scheme and the facilities being provided to primary students. He directed CDPO to organise camps in the village to make bus passes for old women, who have crossed 60 years. He directed the officials to contribute for the Green Punjab Movement initiated by the State government. |
Conman held
Chandigarh, July 12 A case was registered on May 5 on a complaint of Mangru, a resident of Phase-III, Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, Chandigarh, in which he had alleged that on March 26 he went to the State Bank of India, Sector 7, to deposit Rs 25,000 in his savings bank account. Mangru is illiterate and does not knew how to fill in the voucher. One person present in the bank approached him and offered help to fill in the deposit voucher. But, instead of helping out Mangru, he filled the voucher in the name of Mohammad Sharukh. Mangru deposited the amount thinking the voucher had details of his savings account. Mangru came to know that he had been duped when he got a telephone from one of the members of his family that they did not receive the amount. He then complained to the police. During investigation, the police managed to get the details of Mohammad Sharukh who is a resident of Natoor village, Bijnour district, UP. Further investigations revealed that Afsar Ansari, a resident of Burail, is the Mohammad Sharukh's cousin and he had come to the State Bank of India, Sector 7, Chandigarh, on that day. It was he who cheated the complainant by filling in wrong details. The police then arrested Afsar Ansari who was identified by the complainant and during questioning, he confessed to the crime. He has also cheated another person of Rs 10,000 by using the similar modus operandi in the same bank.

On the pretext of helping out illiterate persons, he would fill his relatives' account details on the deposit voucher and make them deposit the amount. The victims later come to know that they have deposited the amount in somebody else's account. |

Man commits suicide at Leisure Valley
Chandigarh, July 12 The victim was rushed to the hospital where the doctored declared him brought dead. He was married and was the owner of a grocery store in the grain market. He was also into property dealing. His family, however, alleged it was a murder and not suicide. A relative of the victim alleged that Mohit received a phone call on his mobile phone when he rushed towards the Valley. They alleged that he was administered poison by someone. They have demanded a thorough probe into the matter. However, the police said it was awaiting the post-mortem report and it seemed to be a clear case of suicide. “We have recovered a bottle of pesticide near his body which he had consumed there only. His car was parked at some distance. Preliminary investigations reveal that it is a case of suicide and not murder. We are investigating,” said Inspector Neeraj Sarna, SHO, Sector-3 police station. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under section 174, CrPC. |

Head constable arrested for accepting Rs 4,000 bribe
Mohali, July 12 The policeman was posted at Phase VIII police station. The sources said the police had asked for the bribe from Nek Chand, a resident of Sector 37, for releasing the complainant’s motorcycle from the police station. On the complaint of Nek Chand, a trap was laid by the vigilance team headed by DSP Barpal Singh. Sources said Surinder Singh had demanded Rs 5,000 from Nek Chand but later settled on Rs 4,000. A case under appropriate sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him. |

World Kabaddi Cup from Dec 1
Chandigarh, July 12 Information and Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka, Industries and Commerce Minister Anil Joshi and MLA and former Indian hockey team captain Padam Shree Pargat Singh were among those present at the meeting. Badal said the Punjab government was committed to promote kabaddi at the international level for making a strong plea for its inclusion in the Olympics. He said this 15-day kabaddi extravaganza would be a memorable treat for kabaddi lovers, as the league matches would be held at different places throughout the state. He said in men’s category, 12 teams would be divided in two pools. The championship would be on league-cum-knockout basis and first two teams from each pool would play in the semifinals. He said the decision on participating teams for women category would be taken later. The Deputy Chief Minister said the state government was committed to ensure dope-free tournament and for this purpose, dope test would be mandatory for each player. He said any player found guilty in the dope test would be banned and every participating team had been asked to conduct the dope test of its players before the start of tournament. |
