Gown syndrome
Symptoms of the ‘gown fashion’ gone viral are very obvious. Its self-professed victim relentlessly splurges on it, makes space to accommodate it in an over-stacked wardrobe and takes a risk by not sticking to the safe bets! Falling prey to it is alright, as long as one emerges stronger to try out new trends. How Frieda Pinto was criticised for not wearing a traditional Indian outfit during her introduction at Cannes, how Sonam Kapoor was taken to task for the same! Poor damsels were just following fashion, something that every woman who knows fashion in India is doing—trading gowns for sarees and suits for occasions that earlier saw women wearing traditional Indian clothes.
Ritu Mahajan, a homemaker, is happy to be infected for her 25th wedding anniversary celebrations. She wore a designer gown in burnt orange and blue. Intricate threadwork lent it a formal look, which was added to with a beautifully embroidered long-flowing dupatta that solved the purpose of a trial. “My decision to wear a gown was contested by a few friends and family members, but I was pretty sure what I was doing. On the special occasion, I wanted to wear something special.” The idea was to look different and graceful and, “not to look like an old woman celebrating her wedding’s silver jubilee,” adds Ritu.
Gowns gradually became popular, especially for occasions like engagement and reception ceremonies, anniversaries and even baby showers. At regular parties, gowns are a common feature. At Mandira Wirk’s design studio, for every bridal lehanga that’s picked up, a formal gown is booked as well. “The demand for ethnic and contemporary is almost equal now. Brides are looking for options other than traditional wears for important functions other than wedding,” informs Mandira. It promises variety in the line-up of outfits for different functions. The addition of headgear and veils for gowns are in demand as well. “Lots of drapes and layers add volume to the gown, making it the perfect wear for a bride on cocktails and engagements.” History suggests that the concept of wedding gowns gained popularity in the 19th century with Queen Victoria’s elaborate gowns. In the East, it takes the form of Kimonos. “But in India, the fashion took its own sweet time to carve a niche,” says Raman Vij, a Ludhiana-based fashion designer, who has fifteen bookings for gowns for the coming wedding season. “Gowns go very well with Western menswear, whereas a lehanga or a suit won’t complement a tuxedo equally well. When men are getting experimental with their formal wear, why not women? Gowns are comfortable; make a style statement and are available in different designs.” From bright neon colours to pastels, the colour palette is also rich, but the ones suggested for this season are shades of pink, peach and pastels. Adhering to the trend, Nancy Verma, an MCA student has bought one in grey colour from Meena Bazaar for her engagement. “It’s a Cinderella-like gown; beautiful and elegant. A gown would make me feel like a princess. As it is, Punjabi weddings have a larger-than-life feel; a gown just adds to that.” With this fashion actually going viral, who’s seeking immunity! ashima@tribunemail.com

From the dark alleys
Punjab is mostly known for the fun-loving and carefree attitude of people, but the entire act of singing, dancing and the back-slapping jokes have a completely different side to it. Keeping this irony in mind, Kuljinder Singh has written the script of Sadda Haq. The film is based on terrorism, which shook Punjab during the 1980s.
Having grown up in an atmosphere where incidents of terror were common, travelling back in time has been easy for Kuljinder Singh, who will be playing the role of Kartar Singh Baaj, inspired by Jagtar Singh Hawara. Also the dialogue writer for the film, he shares more with us, “It was back in 2004 that the famous jail-break involving Jagtar Singh Hawara came to light. It points to the fact that there is still a level of agitation among Punjabis due to what happened during the 1980s. That was the point where I started thinking of the script and conceived the idea,” he says. The film was later shelved due to a more viable commercial project Kuljinder got involved in. Now, the sensitive yet inspiring tale is set for an October release. “The idea is to focus on the dark side of the history of Punjab,” says Kuljinder. Portraying Kartar Singh Baaz has come with its own set of challenges for the actor. Looking at the gravity of the subject, Kuljinder has undergone rigourous training at the Kishor Namit Acting School. “The story revolves around prioritising the past. In several instances, we adapt the “forget it” theory. It’s not about forgetting things but learning from the mistakes,” he says. These involve not only the mistakes of the police but also how politicians handled the situation. “Had the police tackled the situation better, the problem would not have stayed for so long,” he adds. Directed by Mandeep Benipal, the script was frozen after feedback, reviews and research. Playing an integral role of a CBI official, Sandeep Kapoor packs the experience of the film-making course at the New York Film Academy in this movie. “It was there that I met Kuljinder and knew that this is what I wanted to do,” he says. Putting his profession in sales in the backseat, Sandeep comes with a history of making documentaries before this one as well. Apart from Promod Moutho, the film boasts of all fresh faces. “Mostly, well-known faces come with a lot of pre-conceived notions about the role they will be playing. We want to break this trend,” says Kuljinder. The cast includes young actors such as Dev Kharoud, Dinesh Sood, Gaurav Kapoor and Dhriti. Produced by Nidhi Sidhu, the makers have already decided to send across the film to various festivals, especially Cannes. “Not all kind of films can go there. The film has to have a strong message,” says Kuljinder. vasudha@tribunemail.com

Vintage cut
Manpriya Singh
She wants to take each visitor back to the era of My Fair Lady and bestow a strong sense of chic. “I feel the collection is very cute and still powerful,” Simrita Dhillon, design director of Golmaal, Mumbai, adds another adjective, pulls out a white and black dress and makes you picture it all with a face with a bob cut. The collection in question is a trunk show inspired by the fashion icon of the twentieth century, Audrey Hepburn. Accordingly there are shifts, dresses, blouses, tunics with classic cuts and a slight hint of elfin features and waif like figure. She adds, “Golmaal is a venture started by my brother and me in Mumbai back in 2005. We recently opened another store in Khar. Though we retail only from Mumbai, I got my collection to Chandigarh because I belong to the place and I feel the city has a lot of stylish women who have an innate sense of fashion.” Though literally, a trunk show, the exhibition encompasses a section on linen, with dresses in the colour of the season, orange. Then there are jumpsuits. “Freida Pinto was one of our regular clients before she went to LA. She would come to our store often and would say that she was doing a movie called Slumdog Millionaire.” The black dress with circular pockets that she picked up, now finds a proud place as the Frieda Dress. She laughs, “Apart from her Poorna Jaggannath is one our clients and Monica Dogra, the singer from Dhobi Ghat.” Beaides the fit and the finish that she cites as her USP, there’s an effort to Indianise the western wear. “All the fabrics that we use are Indian. There’s a little detailing here and there or very Indian prints cut into modern outfits. We don’t want the youngsters to forget their heritage.” As for the British actress and humanitarian, “We wanted to roll out a classic collection. And who is better than the iconic figure for inspiration. Therefore, you’ll find a lot of vintage cuts.” The competitive pricing makes it worth a try. On at Vanity Box Sector 9, till July 13. manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Big wish
Robert Pattinson wants to take on the role of James Bond, but not before he has added 20 more years of experience in his acting career. The 26-year-old star is keen to play the iconic spy and thinks he'll be able to do justice to the role in two more decades.
"Yeah, I'd definitely like to go for Bond, but in more like 20 years. There'd be nothing worse than, like, 'Let's get a fresh-faced Bond!' That would be the worst idea in the world. It would be ridiculous to reinvent it as some young posh kid," he said in an interview. "After Daniel Craig you have to have some baggage," he added. — ANI

Competing with self
Singer-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham says her only competitor is herself, not other designers.
The 38-year-old has established herself as a successful fashion designer and while she admires the work of others, she insists she doesn't see them as competition. "It's my passion, what I always wanted to do. I have found an area I can compete in, in my own little way. I'm just starting. I have a long way to go and I know that,” she said. “I have so much respect for the great designers, people like Miuccia Prada. I'm in awe of what she does. But I don't think I'm competing with her or anyone else. My only competition is myself and my collection from the season before,” she added. — IANS

Kareena not doing Raas Leela
Kareena Kapoor was supposed to play Juliet opposite Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gujarati adaptation of the classic love tale. She is no longer part of the movie and is likely to be replaced by Priyanka Chopra.
A source says, "Kareena's wedding is coming up in October and there is no chance that Sanjay Leela Bhansali wants his Juliet to be a married heroine. Even Madhur's Heroine is releasing a month before her wedding, so that is sorted. Kareena cannot be a married woman when Raas Leela releases because it is a passionate love story. SLB has always wanted to work with Kareena and he thinks she is an exceptional actress. They could not work together on Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. SLB is not angry with her even though she was not completely honest about her wedding dates. He was surprised that she was walking out of the film due to money issues when actually he could not cast her because of her impending marriage. Anyway, he has sorted out issues with her." The source tells us Kareena's side as well, "Kareena was keen on doing this and even left the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. She has cited money issues because the dates were not made clear to her and she wanted more money for additional dates. These were excuses because of her wedding dates."

Rihanna’s huge takeaway
Rihanna ordered so much food from a Portuguese restaurant that the eatery had to remain closed for the rest of the day. The 24-year-old singer performed at the Barclaycard Wireless Festival in London, England at the weekend and requested a delivery from a local Nando's eatery.
"Rihanna ordered every item from the restaurant and asked for it to be delivered to her private backstage area," said a backstage worker. Her massive order is said to have cost around 7,000 pounds. "The restaurant had to shut their doors for the remainder of the day as they had no stock left. "Everyone was laughing, saying that only Rihanna could clear out Nando's," the source added. — ANI

In bloom
Satish Narula Looking for a new and unusual plant for your garden? It means you have real interest in gardening. Those who are curious are always on look out for something different. And at a time when the ‘new introduction’ puts forth its best, they become the proud owner. Vibrancy is a must for a good garden. One of the least exploited plants to fall in this category is Clerodendron thomsonii. Mostly it is known as cleordendron. If you go to the nursery and ask for the plant you will get it. Only you have to remove the confusion as there are other clerodendrons like the one used for growing a hedge or even the climber that is grown for flowering in shade. The flower is amazing as there is a perfect contrast of deep red coming out of sparkling white enclosure. The flowers are borne in numbers at the terminals. The plant can be trained on any structure or grown in a pot. It is easily multiplied by cuttings. It is not always the type and form of the plant or bloom that attracts. When a plant is in profuse flowering, it also draws attention towards it. One of the best flowers for such a magnanimous display of blooms is allamanda. The plant is weak stemmed and gardeners normally train this plant as they do with climbers. The flowers are very bold and it is sight to see this shrub in flowering. The flowers are pure and deep yellow. Now it is also available in another colour that is deep pink with deeper shade throat. This plant is also multiplied by cuttings. This is the right time to do so. We do not expect you to be botanists to know that both the above mentioned plants fall in the category of shrubs and not a climber. As they are weak-stemmed, they need support to grow upward. Whatever category you put them in; it is a matter of pride for gardeners to have such plants. Such plants are good for planning in small spaces but when space is not the concern, nothing can beat Erythrina crista galli, another plant with a tongue twisting name. But then good things do not come easily. Remember the name, get it from the nursery and enjoy the sight. It is a short stature tree that hardly grows to 10 to 12 feet height. The spreading tree not only gives unusual type of brick red flowers but also has main trunk and limbs valued for their architectural beauty. (Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist)

Need for speed
Simranjeet Gill “One day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do things you’ve always wanted. Do it now.” – Paulo Coelho. One of those rare network site updates which make sense and appeal to you – could not have been more befitting as the title line when you get back, adjust yourself in the finest and the fastest machines- an AMG or for that matter a Bugatti Veyron or even an Aston Martin V12 Vantage. There is something about speed that the racing arms of various car models entice to no end. Definitely, cars that touch a speed of 0-100kmh in only a 4.4 second event, you have to be super alert and in sync with the machine. Here is what the super cool cars are made of. Power packed
C63 AMG is one among few sedans offered under the AMG umbrella. AMG engineering success went to the extent that Mercedes Benz eventually took over and AMG now is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler Chrysler. C63 AMG has a V8 power plant developing 336 kW (457 hp) at 6800 rpm, delivering an impressive torque of 600Nm at 5000 rpm. AMG has been able to moderate fuel consumption down to 12.1-lt/100km and with the performance pack; the 0-100kmh sprint is only a 4.4 second event. The interiors are something all Indians would adore. That’s one reason why cars are bought. The loud red rally seats, oval shaped performance steering wheel gives a rally feel. Headroom can get a bit tight for those longer of torso and rear seat occupants don't have the best view of the world. Boot space of 475 lt is quite impressive for this sports saloon. Dream come true
A sports version with speed, Bugati Veyron 16.4, is a dream come true. Manufactured by French Marque Bugatti, we could see it in 2005. For those of you who think why it is such a rage, Veyron is the fastest street legal production car with a top speed of 431 km/hr. A 8.0 litre, W16 cylinder, Veyron can be driven in either semi- or fully automatic mode. Bring out the beast
Certain cars can get the adrenaline pumping. The Jaguar XKR S is one such model that offers speed and style both. A super charged 5 lt engines with 8 cylinders has a torque of 680. And if speed has to be seen, 0-100 in 4.4 seconds is a marvel in performance. Driving can be rewarding and exciting in an aero space inspired aluminum body. It also has a unique roof that can be raised or lowered in less than 18 seconds automatically. Priced: 1 crore (approx). Get sporty
A new addition in the sports model is Skoda Laura RS, which carries sports model legacy. A 1.8 turbo charged fuel engine and electronic aid makes it a speedy experience. Interiors are something all sports model vouch for along with speed. (Gill is a Chandigarh-based HOG rider)

Dancing away to glory
Pratyusha Banerjee might be known for her talent of acting, but she surprised audiences with dancing skills on the dance reality show Jhalak Dhikla Jaa. However, Pratyusha has her own apprehensions…. What dance form do you find the most challenging? I find hip hop very challenging and I don't really enjoy it. However, I enjoy dance forms, including salsa and Bollywood dancing. What will you present in the next episode of Jhalak? I have shown my style through soft dancing but things are getting tougher. I'm going to show some jhatkas and matkas now. Audiences will see a powerful performance of mine in the next episode. You are also trained in kathak. Did it help you on the show? Nothing helps on Jhalak’s stage. The competition there is very intense. How do you rate yourself as a dancer on a scale of 10? I’d say 8/10 as a dancer
but I am confident of being a 10/10 in some time. I am exploring myself day by day and learning a lot of new things, so I will be there soon.

The year ahead
If your birthday is July 12...
Elderly people need to take care of their health. There will be a rise in your expenses that will
bother you. Do not behave stubborn, as you would easily offend others. Erratic behaviour of someone close ruins your mood. Your sharp observation will help you stay ahead of others. Lots will depend on the clarity of your mind insofar as decision-making is concerned. Not a very beneficial 2012-13, so check your money situation and limit your expenses. Avoid
involving yourself in the affairs of others. You will catch the eye of a special someone if you move about within your group. Your boss will not be interested in excuses - do your work to remain in his good books. Travel, entertainment and socialising would be on your agenda. Your life may seem perfect to your friends and family members, but you will be disturbed by some recent developments. Speculation will be hazardous; therefore all investments should be made with extreme care. Arguments with children will bring mental pressure; do not strain yourself beyond a point because certain issues are best when not touched. Travel will be beneficial, but expensive. You’ve got a way of making the cash flow. A certain connection can also prove invaluable in a surprising context. Working solo is liable to prove difficult, while the help of a co-worker or team not only lightens the load, it also adds motivation. Financially, things seem to be taking a turn for the worse. Some stumbling blocks could occur and you could have problems overcoming it. The stars recommend keeping calm. Those who are currently out of work will get the news they’ve been waiting for. This will lead to moments of great harmony. A ‘big ticket’ buy to enhance family life is likely. Some problems could affect you psychically for a longer period. December is accident-prone, so be careful. Also, control your impulsiveness. Mood: Energetic and willing. Compatible signs: Virgo, Capricorn. Lucky colours: Blue, coral.
Lucky days: Saturday and Sunday. Lucky numbers: 8, 11, 15, 16 and 80
