Two wheels of bliss
For some bikers, the world revolves around their machines. On World Jawa Day here's a sneak peek into the lives of some…
Jasmine Singh

When it comes to freedom, when it is about discovering your own self; where life is a thrilling challenge…one word most people who have a pulsating soul come up with is biking! The type, variant and engine does not matter — a GSXR 1300 Hayabusa, a Ninja, a Harley Davidson or a Jawa Yezdi, the metal makes no difference. It is about liberation and something about revival as well!

The Jawa Yezdi Club of Chandigarh celebrates its 10th anniversary and third Annual Word Jawa Day on July 8 with almost forty bikers meandering through the city on their 40-50 years old Yezdis and Jawa motorcycles. As the bikers say — life might begin at 40, but it gets interesting at 80mph! There is something about the two wheels that gets people on to the road and if it is raining, even better! We ask people from the club and elsewhere how they view life from the rear view of their motorbikes.

Harpreet Shergill, member of the Jawa Yezdi Club of Chandigarh, which was founded in April 2010, attaches a lot of meaning to biking especially on his Jawa. "This 250 cc two-stroke motorcycle dominates my life. It is a stress buster for me, a symbol of freedom. Whenever I take it out on the road, along with my club members moving in formations in the city and hills closeby, I can see people clicking pictures; which is a great feeling," says Harpreet, who along with his members is actively involved in the restoration work of Jawa Yezdi bikes. The club has restored more than 50 Jawa and Yezdi motorcycles till date. Adds Harpreet, "It is a nice thing to see that 95 per cent of the restorers are young boys in the age group of 18-27."

Twenty-year-old Peer Waraich from Karnal owns a bullet, a 1971 Jawa and a Yahama RX 135, but when it comes to riding he picks the one he feels most attached to on a given day. A member of YYC Chandigarh, Peer sees riding as a perfect antidote to his frustration. "Whenever I feel disturbed, I know the one thing I can bank on is my bike. When I ride alone on the road, I can feel my fears, anger and emotions hit the wind and get dissolved somewhere in nature."

A metaphor of life, the trend of biking solo as well as in groups is also catching up with youngsters and surprisingly with people who find themselves neck-deep in work! Neeraj Sahuja, a banker from Zirakpur, has a Honda CB Unicorn and has it parked in his place for almost a year now. "I was given two options by my friends, either ride a bike or keep thinking about doing so for the rest of your life! It was mandatory, I had to take up the first one and now I know why. When my days become tiring, when I think I can't handle pressure anymore, I just mount my bike and hit the road. I come back as a new person every time after riding."

YS Guleria, vice-president, sales and marketing, Honda motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI), "Honda's Dream Yuga motorcycle is to promote biking among poeple who like to explore. Classic models have their own charm but 235 Stellar is an all-time classic model and when displayed in Japan, it received a great response."

Those who like to cruise take their pick from a machine that offers that, ones who ride classic bikes know that…old is gold!

Gentleman’s bike

Jawa, a 250 cc two stroke motorcycle, dominated the Indian city motorcycle scene from early 60s till late 80s came to India in 1962 as production started as CKD units whereby, it was totally indigenised by 1968 and it later came to be known as Yezdi with squarish rendering to the tear drop design of Jawa design flow.

Safety saves

On the World Jawa Day, the JYC Chandigarh club has collaborated with Harman Sidhu, who runs an NGO ArriveSafe Home. Wheel-chaired due to an accident, Harman wants to promote road safety by the use of helmets. "I would want people to ride because of the spirit and not bring in any recklessness on to the road."

The replacement theory
Characters in television serials have a sacrosanct fan-following and when they are replaced, reactions vary. We find out more
Sabia Talwar

Character replacements happen in the world of television when contracts end or actors move on or they pick up a fight with the producer or maybe when it's just time for a change. In the course of making popular television shows, it sometimes becomes the need of the hour to replace beloved characters with new faces. It's not that the replacements are bad, but original characters have a habitual connection with the audience.

gen leap: Nandish Sandhu and (below) Vikas Bhalla as the new Veer

Long time back when the queen of Indian TV soaps, Ekta Kapoor, started the phenomenon of changing characters almost like dresses in her successful saga of generations, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, the audience mocked at it. The main protagonist Mihir was played by Amar Upadhyay who died as per the script and returned as Inder Kumar; then later underwent a plastic surgery where Ronit Roy entered the show to play the same role!

Since then, most of the serials have been following the same trend. The latest to join in is Star Plus' Saath Nibhana Saathiya where the cute and chubby Gopi Bahu (Jiaa Manek) is replaced by Devoleena Bhattacharjee. Reason: Jiaa's participation in dance reality show Jhalak Dikhlaja'.

Also, Sony's Kuch Toh Log Kahenge now has Sharad Kelkar playing the role of Dr Aushutosh, which was earlier portrayed elegantly by Mohnish Bahl and since then the show is experiencing low TRPs. We wonder how the new entrant feels in such a situation! Says Sharad Kelkar, "The show was facing low TRPs way before I joined in because of some issues. I was aware of the fact that the audience was used to watching Mohnish Bahl, but as an actor I decided to get into the skin of the character."
Mohnish Bahl and (below) Sharad Kelkar as the new Dr Ashutosh
Moving on: Mohnish Bahl and (below) Sharad Kelkar as the new Dr Ashutosh

So did he face any negative reactions? "Yes, initially it was a great issue; outside pressure was too much, I used to receive hate mails and some nasty comments on my social networking accounts, but I worked my way through and finally now the shows TRPs have improved," adds Sharad.

And what is Mohnish Bahl's take on this? "I exited the show with a lot of pain, but there was no other option as I had severe health issues. Once I, I got many requests from audiences that I should join back," says Mohnish.

We also got to know that the senior actor has taken the professional decision in a positive manner. "While I was doing the show, I portrayed the character to the best of my ability. Now, I have moved on as I'm used to doing different things," adds Mohnish.

Surely, the character replacement of Sushant Singh Rajput by Hiten Tejwani in Zee TV' Pavitra Rishta had a different reaction because Ankita Lokhande and Sushant are a real-life couple as well, therefore the chemistry between them was awesome.

When the serial decided to take a generation leap and Sushant wanted to try for Bollywood, Hiten stepped in as Manav. "The point was to play the character in its best possible way. I'm good in acting with anybody and everybody," says Hiten. We wonder how tough it was to replace a character! "Replacing any character that has been there for a long time is a challenge and one needs to work really hard. The audience has become smarter these days to accept changes - be it in the story or characters," adds Hiten.

Even Colors' Uttaran has a new Veer in Vikas Bhalla. "Till now I'm getting quite a positive feedback and don't think that the importance of a show decreases because of a character change; it is the story that makes any serial work." Indeed!

A dream come true

We don't need validation for this — Bollywood has always lured people, irrespective of the fact whether they are from small towns or metros. This is also a story of a man who dreamt about camera angles, about shots and finally ended up in his city of dreams, Mumbai.

Jaideep Bandhu, assistant director of the much-awaited project Krrish 3, was in Chandigarh to judge a singing and dancing competition, "The Cadence" organised by The Voice and Penta Cultural Group. No matter what he feels, Mumbai gives a chance to every creative talent to grow and prosper.

"I have been working in the industry for almost 10 years now, I have assisted in films like Raaz, Aap Mujhey Achey Lagney Lagey and now I am doing a prestigious project Krrish 3," says Jaideep.

Having worked with a cross-section of directors in the industry, Jaideep feels he has learnt something from each one of them. "Creativity is something that cannot be taught, but one can always learn the nuances of the trade with time."

It is, however, the experience of Krrish 3 that he likes to share at length. "I have worked with Hrithik Roshan in Aap Mujhey…, and it was great working with him again. He looks fabulous in the movie. Almost 20 days shoot of the movie is left, which we will be doing in Mumbai," adds Jaideep, who raves about the technical strength of the movie. "It will be one-of-its-kind flick and we all have put in a lot of hardwork." For Ravi Prabhakar, member of the cultural group, there is no dearth of talent in Chandigarh and Punjab; kids and youngsters should be encouraged to realise their dreams."

the foodies
Tech for food!
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Eating habits of the Indian middle-class are marked by simplicity - tea with morning newspaper, dal-roti and sabzi for lunch, samosa for snack and rice for dinner! However, now we are getting adventurous and experimenting more. And since we are becoming 'informed' foodies, restaurants too are adding technology to food!

The Chandigarh Ashok (situated on Delhi-Chandigarh highway in Zirakpur,) is one such hotel that has made its food all the more interesting with technologically advanced I-pad menu cards. These I-pads are not just for ordering, but also give you an insight into what you are eating, how it is made and even the knowledge of ingredients as well as their importance in our food! If that's not enough for you, you can also enjoy playing games on the I-pad even as your food gets ready.

The hotel's restaurant Spice Café is multi-cuisine and serves Indian, Continental, Oriental and even Japanese (though on demand) food.

Right from Bhatti ke Jhinge to Mahi Gulfam to Malai Tikka; Shole Banjarein, Reshmi Kebab, Lasooni Tikka, Pahadi Kebab, Kali Mirch Tikka, Achari Kebab to Tinda kebab in starters, you have loads to choose from. Tandoori Khumb is one of their specialties and so is their corn and spinach kebab. In the main course, butter chicken, mutton rogan josh, nali ghost, murg mughali, dum biryani, dal makhani and moti chaman is a must try.

Last but not the least, any meal cannot come to an end without a sweet dish. And if you are the one who is not so calorie conscious, then go for kesari ras malai although you have a host of dishes to choose from.

Best of all

  • Dal makhani here is one of the best in the city.
  • Arabic fish steak too is a gourmet's delight.
  • Missi roti and keema naan are the best accompaniments.
  • If you are fond of Southern flavours then Murgh Chettinad is your take.
  • In Pan-Asian, try their vegetables in bean mustard sauce.

Divine theme
satish narula

White is the symbol of peace and purity. In gardening too, white represents innocence and divinity. It can also symbolise silence or secrecy.

The theme white has its own charm and beauty. Gardens based on this theme is called the moon garden. Such a garden has all white, the trees, shrubs, climbers, and even seasonal flowers. Such garden is at its crescent best on the purnima day (full moon). Even in the small home gardens you can create such effects.

One thing natural about white is that it comes with a fragrance in most cases. Among the trees, magnolia and plumeria are the ones with fragrance. The plumeria comes with bunches of flowers on the terminals. The tree is short height tree with the advantage that it can be trained to grow low during winter when it can be pruned. Magnolia also bears very bold fragrant flowers.

One could select gardenia as fragrant and free flowering shrub. Single chandni is another free flowering shrub but its flowers are not fragrant. The double flowered chandni bears comparatively less flowers. There is white mussaenda and poinsettia too. They take turns to give white blooms, a full canopy bonanza. While mussaenda 'flowers' from April to November, poinsettia is at its best from December to March. Motia also gives white fragrant flowers.

While planting such plants in limited space, the selection of site is very important as most of the time it should be open to moonlight. Amongst white flowering climbers, jasmine is a boon if there is space constraint; one could train it on some structure where it gets maximum of the moon. It is also fragrant. Now is the time when you can choose almost any colour in winter and summer annuals. You can choose to have a white gladilous, zentedeschia, dahlia, verbena, nemesia and portulaca.

(Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist)

Special effect

  • Its not necessary that you go shopping for white flowering trees, shrubs and climbers only. One could also go in for those plants that have foliage with white or yellow variegation. In the moonlight they also give the same effect.
  • Use of white river stone also gives added effect to such gardens.
  • One could use white stone statues too.
  • To add to the colour white and to enjoy the garden at night, place white painted furniture. But it should be very artistic.

A book for boredom

People resort to stalking each other on social sites like Facebook for endless hours out of sheer boredom and to satisfy their entertainment needs. According to a study, published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, people Facebook to tackle boredom, and to satisfy their entertainment needs. The study said that Facebook also provides them with an outlet for interpersonal communication and self-expression.

The research also suggests that a certain personality type determines how an individual uses social media and that the reason for engaging with Facebook can fluctuate over time.

According to a publication, the study done by Daniel Hunt, Archana Krishnan, and David Atkin confirmed that, with the exception of information seeking, all of the other behavioural factors that drive online activity hold true for Facebook, with entertainment and time passing being two of the biggest drivers of Facebook activity.

The entertainment motive was shown to be the most powerful predictor of how much time participants spent on Facebook," the study concluded.

The study was based on a survey of 417 undergraduate students and was first published this June. —ANI

Success caused the rift...

The rift between Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis was reportedly caused by the French singer's resentment of the actor's Hollywood success.

There was a period when Paradis, 39, wanted only the best for Depp and pushed the actor to take marquee roles, such as 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; the film raked in more than $ 300 million and turned him into the world's most sought-after actor.

But, according to sources, Paradis eventually began to resent Depp's success even though his $ 20 million-a-movie salary paid for their lavish lifestyle, reported a publication.

And with her singing career taking her nowhere, "Vanessa started to feel like she'd sacrificed her career for his," a friend said.

Depp, who earned more than $ 75 million in 2010, grew resentful, too.

"Nothing Johnny did was ever good enough for Vanessa. And when he wasn't working, he was called a slob for not doing enough for the kids and her family." The former couple is parents to Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 10. The constant bickering led to vicious spats.

"They'd have blazing fights. Vanessa would take her frustrations out on him." Depp, in turn, "started to drink heavily," the friend said.

On June 19, Depp's rep released a statement explaining that they had "amicably separated." — PTI
