The Punjab and Haryana High Court today held that a rule contemplating the forfeiture of 25 per cent auction amount without providing an opportunity of hearing was illegal.

Administration firm on house tax imposition
Chandigarh, July 3
Even though the Municipal Corporation (MC) had decided against the imposition of house tax in the city, the UT Administration today again told the MC to impose the house tax. Civic body officials were told to convince councillors to impose the tax during a coordination meeting between officials of the UT Administration and the corporation.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Bhawan on the Panjab University campus was today inaugurated for the second time. It was first inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, RC Sobti, in 2010 when Guru Nanak Sikh Studies was shifted to the partially constructed building. Today, the entire building was inaugurated by the education minister of Punjab.

Service tax evasion worth Rs 5 cr detected
Chandigarh, July 3
A team of the local service tax division searched the office of Millennium Manpower Limited, which provides manpower services to the Municipal Corporation, Government Medical Hospital and College (GMCH) at Sector 32 and various other departments of the UT Administration, and confiscated record books on the charge of tax evasion.

Manan Vohra, a city based budding cricketer has made it to the final list of Indian (U-19) cricket squad, for the upcoming Cricket (U-19) World Cup, to be held in Australia, in August. Manan, who belongs to a family of renowned hockey players, has been selected by the All-India Junior Selection Committee of the BCCI (Board for Control Cricket in India), this evening.

A first: CHB files case against former officer

First time in the 36-year-old history of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), the management of the board has gone in appeal in the Chandigarh Sessions Court against its former Chief Engineer, GS Rosha, for deciding arbitration cases -involving crores of rupees - to extend benefit to private builders.

It seems that the municipal corporation is waiting for another epidemic to break out in the colonies of the city due to unhygienic living conditions prevailing there. With the monsoon expected to commence next week, none of the colonies in the city is prepared for it as neither the garbage collection system nor the cleanliness of road gullies have been conducted in a proper manner till date.

325 vehicles challaned
Chandigarh, July 3
To curb the tendency to ply unauthorised vehicles with incomplete documents, and driving overloaded vehicles, the State Transport Authority (STA) during a intensive drive against commercial vehicles challaned 325 vehicles under different offences.

In order to curb the menace of drunk driving, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has provided one alcosensor at each of the 11 police stations in the city.

7 CRPF personnel fall unconscious
Panchkula, July 3
Unable to bear the humid conditions, seven CRPF personnel, who were participating in a 16-km marathon fell unconscious at the CRPF complex today. As per information, constable Jia-ul Rehman (20) and Shantu Mehtu (20) both natives of West Bengal, fell unconscious after completing the race. They were immediately rushed to the Sector-6 General Hospital by Sub Inspector Ram Chand Chobo in an ambulance of the CRPF.

Pvt company offers to take over maintenance of public toilets

A public toilet in a bad shape at Phase II in Mohali. Public toilets here are set to get a makeover with Sulabh International offering to take over the operation and the maintenance of the amenity. It is learnt that representatives of the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation along with officials of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) carried out a joint inspection of the public toilets in various parts of the town last week.

New DHO assumes charge

Dr Gursharan Singh, senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Civil Hospital here, joined as the District Health Officer (DHO), Mohali, today as per orders of the state government. The last date for applying in BSc courses and postgraduate courses, except MCom, at Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, popularly known as SD College, is July 6. The police has booked six persons for constructing an illegal colony near Gurlabgarh here. The case was registered on the complaint of Additional Chief Administrator of GMADA under the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act, 1995.

There are 20 illegal colonies at Dera Bassi. Sources said these colonies had come up in violation of the building bylaws, with developers failing to seek an approval from the local bodies government, Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) and Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).

Road mishap: SI moves application in High Court
Chandigarh, July 3
Moving from pillar to post seeking justice for the death of their only son, parents of 20-year-old Gagandeep Singh still have to wait to see the accused booked. Sub Inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar of the UT police, who was allegedly found guilty in the inquiry conducted by the Haryana Crime Branch today moved an application in the High Court pleading he was innocent and the inquiry was not conducted properly.

Non-bailable warrants against accused
Chandigarh, July 3
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today issued non-bailable warrants against Jaswinder Singh, alias Rocky, the accused arrested in the Dimpy murder case of 2006. Rocky is out on bail and failed to appear in court during a hearing. He produced a medical certificate to explain his absence, which was not accepted by the court. Warrants were issued against him.

2 new courts become operational

Two new courts have become operational at the local District Courts Complex in Phase III-B1 here today. Earlier, there were four courts on the premises.

Man booked for forging documents
Chandigarh, July 3
The UT police has booked a person for cheating for obtaining loan on forged documents. Shashi Bhushan Malhotra, a resident of Sector 23-D, alleged that Suresh Kumar, resident of Sector-23-D, got loan from LIC HFL, Sector-22, on the basis of forged documents. The police has booked the person under Sections 420 (Cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468(forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Chandigarh, July 3
A 32-year-old cyclist was killed after being hit by a speeding Ford car on the road separating Sectors 44 and 45 here last evening. The police has arrested Abhineet, the driver of the car and a resident of Sector 69, Mohali, for causing death due to negligence.

Chandigarh team win title

The local cricket team won the Punjab State Inter-district League Tournament for boys (U-22) with a total of 18 points. Jalandhar (17 points) and Patiala (15 points) attained second and third positions respectively. Title winners Chandigarh routed Mohali by an innings and 59 runs yesterday, securing a bonus point, at the cricket stadium of Sector 16.

Baptist Cricket Academy, MCA (B) register wins in U-12 tournament
Mohali, July 3
A batsman plays a shot during a match between MCA (A) and MCA (B) at Phase IX, Mohali, on Tuesday In the ongoing junior (U-12) cricket tournament, the cricket teams of Baptist Cricket Academy and MCA (B) registered wins in their respective matches here today. In the first match, Baptist Cricket Academy defeated Mohali Tigers by 31 runs. Batting first, the winning side posted a total of 194 runs for the loss of three wickets in the allotted of 25 overs. Aayush (63 off 49), Prabhjit Singh (62 off 52), Prithvi Lohtiya (25 off 18) were the main scorers for the team. Bowler Siddharth claimed 1 for 35.

The Directorate of Sports, Panjab University, might claim of having top-class playgrounds, gymnasium hall and swimming pool, but when it comes to maintaining these facilities, the authorities appear to be lacking seriousness.
