As people around the globe celebrate World Music Day, we find out the real meaning of world music...

When the medium of music is sound and silence, it becomes questionable as to how music really forms a bond across boundaries. As the world drowns in the charm of World Music Day, we find out what makes world music popular and where does it touch a chord with Chandigarh.

An amalgamation of different styles of music, world music is more of a recent concept in India. Opines Shikhar Sharma, bassist from Pakistan-based band Reath, "India is far too much into Bollywood, which makes it tougher for the masses to relate to the idea." Currently in Mumbai and working with Mahesh Bhatt's Marksheet, he talks about how classical tends to overshadow the music scenario in India. "World music is a mix of several different styles, say an African musician collaborates with India classical singer," he says. Positive about the slow movement towards world music, Shikhar is certain that soon the Indian music industry will accept and understand the concept better. "It's only now that music directors don't mind experimenting with world music," he adds.
Pranav Pahwa
Pranav Pahwa

Nods Deepak Rathore, lead vocalist from Swastik, "World Music Day has a whole new meaning in Western societies where it is religiously celebrated." Regretting the fact that the city really does not do much for the day, Swastik ensures they make their contribution. "We are always willing to perform on the day and think that's how it should be. Rock bands, singers and musicians should come together on the day and give it the meaning it holds," he adds.

Moving on to a different tangent, we understand the idea from a classical sitar player; Dr Harvinder Sharma, principal, Government College, Kalka, shares his point of view on the World Music Day: "Music is integral and a vital part of human life." Notably, Sharma has been playing since the past twenty years and is a disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan. While creating magic with his sitar, Harvinder has witnessed countries dedicating weeks together to music. "Musicians need to stop relating their passion to a regular job. It goes much beyond the set structures and boundaries," he adds.

The thought might be a bit disconnected, but the idea remains the same. An active part of two rock bands, Delhi-based Pranav Pahwa says, "World Music evolved once the artists from the world over came together and collaborated with Indian artists." A concept that developed during the early 1970's, it has only reached the pinnacle of popularity in Africa. "In terms of Indian artists, only rock bands like Advaita and singers like Shankar Mahadevan made their contribution to the world music scene in India," Pranav chips in. As the collective sound of world music takes over, sink into feeling.

Grand celebrations

To celebrate the day, Alliance Française, Chandigarh, is organising La Fete De La Musique on the June 21 where several young instrumental musicians, artists, singers and theatre artists will come together to perform.

Back in time

The idea of Fête de la Musique, also known as World Music Day, was first broached in 1976 by American musician Joel Cohen; then employed by the national French radio station France Musique. Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration during the summer solstice. The idea of the day was to encourage amateur and professional musicians to perform on the streets. The slogan Faites de la musique (make music), is used to promote this goal. Many free concerts are organised, making all genres of music accessible to the public.

Director Arshad Khan, whose serial Manzil Apni Apni is currently on air, is pretty flexible about floating between the big screen and the small
Ashima Batish

Since the last two decades, Arshad Khan has been successfully juggling between the small and the big screen. Usually, it's the other way round — from TV to films —but Arshad , was pretty flexible with switching mediums. What still matters to him is the substance that a project has to offer. "The television industry has made remarkable improvement in the last ten years, so much so that it's as good as the film industry of India." Arshad already has in his kitty films such as Vishwaatma, Dadagiri, Janejigar and TV soaps like Kesar, Koi Dil Mein Hai, and the recent Manzil Apni Apni.

Director’s Cut: Arshad Khan

It's been a great journey so far, full of rich experiences. "If I have worked with satellite channels and production houses, I have also directed shows for DD." Citing the difference between making shows for private channels and DD, he adds that both have their own advantages and disadvantages. "Although the budget is limited in DD shows, it offers you the freedom in terms of the storyline. Unlike satellite channels, producers don't come running to divert the plot of the show. But when it comes to budget, you can only experiment with shows run on satellite channels." He is a bit biased towards working in DD shows, for the massive reach the channel offers. "From big cities to nondescript towns of India, people watch my show Manjil Apni Apni."

Shifting between the mediums, he says, hasn't been tough at all. "I am technically very sound. My experience of directing films helped me adjust to the working system of soaps." One fact that bothers him about the TV industry is untrained actors landing up with major roles in serials. "I wish acting was taken more seriously. I wonder where the NSD pass-outs go. It's them who can do justice to a role rather than 'just anybody who has got a face'." Arshad is all agog for the next switch —from TV to films again. He will be directing a musical comedy film Tak Dhum Tak Dhish. "It's a medium budget film. The cast hasn't been finalised but we will have established actors."

Abhay Deol is upset
Film Rock the shadi has given rise to a barrage of allegations and counter allegations

Abhay Deol miffed with the way film Rock The Shadi is going, chose to express it in media. producer Siddharth clarifies his stand: I really wished, that Abhay would speak to me directly and not through the press. I am currently in Fiji for a film, so wish I could do this face to face. All I can say is that Abhay should check facts directly, form a fair opinion and then react publicly. Not to go on hearsay and get emotional about friendships. There were 200 people on the set and everyone knows what happened. Balaji has been extremely reasonable in wanting to make the film in a certain budget. I had sold the film to them. If I was the problem, then the film would have, still been completed without me. Clearly I am not the cause of the delay. It's my script and a superb one. So far 45 minutes of the 90 minute film that’s been shot and it looks superb. We made Ragini MMS, we know budgets. High concept films cannot be made lavishly and everyone has to cooperate to work in a certain way, which means, thinking outside the box.

We have a slate of six films which are starting shoot in the next nine months with film budgets ranging from five to 50 crore. We focus on high concept, commercial, youth films. Crazy Disco Valley, vampire Bloody Veer, horror The Pool, spoofy Jaa Chudail Jaa, chick-flick Kinky & Pinky and Size Zero amongst others. No one would fund us, if we didn't know what we were doing. — HRM

Stay fit with SRK
Sports buff: Shah Rukh Khan
Sports buff: Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan has always been lean and fit thanks to his sports background and then he left everyone speechless with his six-pack-abs. Here, the King shares some fitness tips.

1. Smoking is the worst habit I have and I am trying to quit. So I won’t tell you not to smoke but you know you must not smoke. Cut junk food out from your diet: no colas, no ice-creams and no chips.

2. Push yourself while working out, do it like a job. Don’t waste time and don’t listen to music while working out. If you drink alcohol, then you must work out an extra 20 minutes. I don’t think youngsters below 25 should have beer bellies.

3. It’s important for children to go out and do some activities like football, cycling, running or whatever they like. They should also try adventure sports like white water rafting. Of course, their safety must be ensured.

4. Getting a six pack depends more on your diet than on exercise. It takes more than a month for them to show. You have to work out at least four times a week and do anything that makes you sweat for thirty minutes. You cannot have rice and bread and have to survive on grilled food and plenty of water.

5. At the peak of my workout, I do 100 push-ups and 60 pull-ups. It’s something one can do after becoming regular with workouts. It’s important to have a positive frame of mind.

Saif not playing superhero in my film: Luthria

Milan Luthria denies reports that Saif Ali Khan will be seen as a superhero in his next directorial venture, and adds that people have misinterpreted him.

"No, it's not a superhero film. Saif is not playing a superhero in my film. People have misinterpreted me and come to the conclusion that I am making a same film like everyone else. All I can say is that it's an entertaining film with a twist," Luthria said.

"The film has all the elements of fantasy. When you have a very good script, it becomes difficult to put it into a particular slot or genre," he added. Produce by Bhushan Kumar, the film is yet-to-be-titled.

Describing Saif's role in the film, Luthria said that "Saif will be seen playing a role that he has never tried before", and added that even he is "trying something that I have not attempted before."

"I have a fantasy element in my film and that's my trump card. In many ways, I can say that it's a very Manmohan Desai kind of a film," he added.

Luthria earlier worked with Saif in his 1999 directorial debut Kachche Dhaage and says Saif has proved his versatility over the years.

"Saif has been proving himself in new ways, be it Dil Chahta Hai, Race, Love Aaj Kal, Ek Hasina Thi or anything else. He has proved his versatility."

"There is a lot of excitement with this film. When we first worked together, that time he was a little raw and I was new. Now we are meeting when we both are at the top," he added. — IANS

The 18-year-old singer said the perfume will be aimed at his female fans and he has no interest in creating a scent for men. "Girlfriend is kind of a more mature version of Someday. It has some of the same scents to it, but older. It's going to be a great fragrance, and I think people are going to like it a lot.

"We wanted to make a fragrance for my female fans - I don't know what's going to happen from here, though. At the moment, I'm not interested in making a men's fragrance," Bieber said. — PTI

Cruise offers a helping hand

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise reportedly offered his private jet to a worker, who was injured on the set of his latest film Oblivion, to take him to a nearby hospital.

The 49-year-old actor later visited bed ridden David at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

"Tom stayed cool and swept straight into action. He didn't take a back seat at all and made sure his Gulfstream V jet was ready to go in case it was needed. It was quick thinking," a source said.

David, who was crushed by a 50-stone weight, is now undergoing intensive physiotherapy.

It is unclear whether he has been discharged from the movie, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Andrea Riseborough.

"Tom was great. He gave so much support to David and his family. It was a terrible accident but Tom had no obligation to put himself out like that," the source added.

Blast from the past
Ashima Batish

Irrespective of the wavering interest of people in this music genre, Chhote Haneef and his team have been giving performances around the globe. They have recently come back after one at South Africa, which was applauded by one and all. Qawwali, they say, is forever and those who contest it will support them too after taking a look at their packed schedule. “We sing in the praise of Ajmer Sharif. How can our music go out of fashion? It’s a part of our heritage and also spirituality,” says Chhote Hanif, who was in Chandigarh on Wednesday to perform on the invite of the Pracheen Kala Kendra.

He adds that anybody who visits Ajmer Sharif to pay obeisance enjoys the music genre played live. “They come back in love with this form of music. The interest further gets developed when they listen to the qawwalis again.” Coming from the family of musicians, his style of singing is a blend of Sufi gayaki and recitation. He is known for his Sufiana kalams also.

“We have audience for every form of musical genre; just because the number is small, people think that qawwalis are a thing of the past.” The other artists in the Qawwali group are Banne Khan, Rashid; Adir Khan Mohammad Kasim and Mohammad Azmal (tabla), Mohammad Wazim (Naal) and Mohammad Ghulam (Banjo).

It’s all about how Bollywood stars look on screen. Here’s catching up with two men who are behind those looks
Jasmine Singh

If Bollywood gives a full blast of entertainment and de-stresses whenever it is tuned into, the glitz and glamour industry also passes on a number of hi-end fashion trends to the audiences who go back wearing Ray Bans (read Salman Khan’s Dabangg) or tattoos (read Ghajini)! We catch up with two men who give these film stars a new look and style everyday. Imraan Ansari, regional trainer, VLCC hair stylist, and Vishal Mudgal, corporate area beauty head, Delhi, VLCC, work with Bollywood actors, defining and redefining ‘styles’. In Chandigarh to talk about the upcoming The Royal Wedding, the two artists cut and paint notes from Bollywood.

Mane matters

Imraan Ansari, 28, can pass of as any other stylist; it is only when he shares his clientele list that we want to know him more. “I have worked with Kangana Ranuat, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Paudokone, Dia Mirza and Nargis Fakri for the Wills Fashion Week,” says Imraan, adding that Paris, France, is the place from where fashion flows. “Everything starts from Paris, this is the place where new looks and new hair styles are created. These then come to Mumbai and we apply it on our film stars.” Is the self-appointed diva Sonam Kapoor listening! “We generally don’t have to work extra on celebrities because they are conscious of their image, and they maintain it well,” he adds.

Imraan sees hair styling and hair-cut trends change each year. He lists some of the ‘in’ hairstyles. “The red carpet look is making rounds in the industry. Soft curls tied together in a small bun, light make-up and red lipstick,” offers Imraan. Styling for celebrities can be interesting and challenging at the same time. The hair stylist laughs, “No these people are really sweet. We don’t have to convince them much. All the same, while styling I have to take into account their face structure and also the character they play in a particular movie.”

Patch up

Vishal Mudgal, a corporate make-up artist, looks at his profession as a creative piece of art. “Make-up doesn’t mean making someone look good, it means highlighting the features and hiding the flaws, if any. When I do make up for Bollywood people, I have to be particular about the occasion they are attending, what dress they would be wearing and what character they are portraying at that time,” says Vishal. So, what are the tips that he hands down to his clients? “They know that they have to take care of themselves. I ask them to clean and moisturise their face before sleeping. A good and healthy face reduces our work.”

pet passion
A hearty breed
Manpriya Khurana
Danielle Cuk with her dog Tyson
Danielle Cuk with her dog Tyson

What’s the difference between a pet owner and a dog lover? The lengths to which you can get to have your four legged baby. Restless wait, twelve weeks of countdown and reception at the airport, not withstanding. “Oh! We had to wait for three months to get him, it was such a long wait,” Danielle Cuk, speaks of what went in before they could acquire their prized possession.

A seven month old, caramel and beige, South African Boerboel, called Tyson.

“We were looking on the Internet for options when we decided to go for him. But the only place where we could get him from was Canada.” She adds, “Because we couldn’t carry him before he was three months old and there we had an uncle who took care of him during this period.” A couple of arrangements here and there and this January, Tyson joined his family in India.

Love me, love my dog

Since then, it’s been as good an affair as any pet owner has to share. Now who loves him the most is a difficult proposition. Laughs Danielle, “Well, I think that would have to be my boyfriend. Because it was his choice.” Post a German Shepherd called Spike, Tyson seemed the best progression. “It’s a very different breed, very scary but very loving. He’s really good with the family and also a good guard dog.” She adds, “They are not aggressive at all. It’s about how you train them.”

And, we guess, he’s trained to give back the reception that he once got. Each time. “He gets really excited, starts running around and is all over the place.” She adds, “Everytime.” Tyson comes from the famous professional boxer Mike Tyson. “We did this because Tyson is very strong and a hearty breed and we just liked the name and thought it suited him.”

Yours faithfully

Every dog not just must have his day, rather deserves his day. “Initially, we were a little apprehensive of getting him because timing was an issue. They need to be given time to, which itself is in rarity.” Now, he’s not just a part of the family but family itself.

“He needs to be taken for a walk everyday, though only once, but that’s a forty five minutes of walk.” Not many things would not be reprimanded for not acting their age. She adds, “At first he was very timid, when he’d go for walks but now since he is really big, he doesn’t get scared.” Are we missing out on any trivia? “He’s a big dog, is very large otherwise but acts like a puppy.”

It’s rocking

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2012 and has managed to receive a good response. And the track ‘O Womaniya’, whose lyrics have been penned down by Varun Grover, is quite a hit. It has bizarre vocals of Khushboo Raj and Rekha Jha with a host of equally enthused female voices as the back-up. There is also a second version of this track with techno-improvisations.

Soft melody

It is like a ‘ladies-sangeet’ number such as ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ and has a strong ‘Bihari’ folk feel, which provides lighter moments in the terrifying action saga flick. The track is screechy and rustic to the core.

— Chavvi Mittal, student, MCM College

Live touch

I love this track’s piercing vocals that intensify the style; from then on it continues to impress. It is so apt with its playful and sensual lyrics. It takes the live feel to another level.

Good job

It somehow reminds me of ‘Om Shanti Om’ from the movie Karz. This track is inventive and with superb energy, which adds to the flavour.

The real news, however is that it will come back soon on Channel [V] with a new season and a whole new set of real, hard-hitting stories that will keep you at the edge of your seats. Gumrah Season 2 will begin soon (expected in the month of July) and rumours are that the show will be aired daily from Monday to Friday. It will be interesting to see if the saga continues with the blue-eyed boy or a fresh new face will take over the screen.

Here & there: Karanvir Bohra

While most actors would be content with one good thing going, actor Karanvir Bohra loves to have bags full of work. He is acting for three different mediums, TV, films and even theatre. His hit UTV show Saubhagyavati Bhava, a play Mareechike and film 125 kms are keeping him occupied. Now he has also turned a designer. Over to Karanvir…

Aren’t you working a lot?

Not at all. If there is a will there is a way. I do things that I enjoy and I love designing. I know I am good at styling.

How are you going about it?

I am collaborating with a designer friend Amy. She designs women’s wear while I will do men’s wear. I am launching my men’s wear clothing line called Pegasus.

How involved will you be?

I will be completely hands on. I will make jackets and formal wear for my clients according to their needs.

We heard you also learnt kathak?

Yes, I have been learning it since three years and though I was sceptical, initially but later enjoyed it. Along with wife Teejay, we perform dance for our Guruji every Shivratri as an ode to Lord Shiva.

Does the jam-packed schedule get to you?

Well I feel I focus better if I am doing multiple things. I work better under pressure.

How is it playing an amnesia ridden Viraj?

Different and fun. This new phase gives me more to do on the show. I am enjoying myself.
