Having contributed thirty-five hundred jingles in eleven languages, seasoned singer KK opines that it is the lyrics that make a song and not really the music
For any father, the joy of watching his son do well is perhaps a feeling of immense pride and that is exactly what happened with KK when he recorded with his son recently. "He wrapped it up in 15 minutes flat. It feels nice when children tend to stride ahead," he says. In Chandigarh for Season 2 of the Kingfisher Strong Indi-beats at the Parade Ground, KK shares some notes with us.
Not for the first time in the city, the prime reason KK still loves performing is just to watch the crowds sway. "The crowd in Punjab is full of energy. After my first performance itself, I found out that Punjabi music is not important, only enthusiasm is," he says. With a 15-year-old career in Bollywood, KK has witnessed a transition phase in the Indian music industry. "There was a time when no independent singer wanted to associate with the film industry. Today, it's exactly the opposite," he adds. More grounded today, the actor loves the fact that he has grown with each opportunity to perform better each time he is on stage. While throwing some light on his next album, he says he will always treat Bollywood with respect. "Your own album needs time and space, alongside singing for films, which is just a little bit tough." Missing out on independent musicians, this RD Burman fan feels that the magnanimity of Indian film industry is such that cutting through becomes tough. "Bollywood today does not really have a structure, which gives younger music directors the right platform to showcase their talent," he adds. Thirty-five hundred jingles down the line in 11 languages, the seasoned singer in several cases does not even know the actor he is singing for! "What is more important is who I am singing with," he says. KK gets nostalgic when he thinks about a live recording he did with Rajesh Roshan. "It was long back and when you have thirty people only on strings and thirty people just balancing the rhythm, the whole feel of singing changes," he says. He feels that collective work is missing from the industry today. "The industry has impeccable talent, but does not work collectively too often. The times of Kishore Da and Pancham Da were completely different. The element of the song came out from the ambience," he adds. With only one TV show to his credit, the actor thanks his stars that he came face-to-face with the fact that everything on TV is fake! KK does look at reality shows as good platforms, but regrets that young talent loses direction too soon in life. "Several of them get lost in public shows," he says. KK acknowledges the fact that it is lyrics that make a song and not really the music. "If the lyrics are good, the song is pure ecstasy," he says, with a grin on his face. vasudha@tribunemail.com

What happens when a Jatt meets a Juliet? Let's
find it out from actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa, in Ludhiana for the
promotion of their upcoming movie Jatt and Juliet…
There is a Jatt — a naughty, roguish yet lovable desi guy - and there is a Juliet — a modern Punjabi kudi with loads of sophistication. And the hit pair of Jihne Mera Dil Luteya, actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa is back with a bang. This time around the venture is called Jatt and Juliet, for whose promotion they visited Ludhiana recently.
Talking about the movie, Diljit, who has established himself as a singer with several foot-tapping tracks like Lakk 28 kudi da, says, "The movie is very close to my heart. It shows how despite endless ups and downs in a relationship, life wants to give Jatt and Juliet another chance. It is a love story where the Jatt and the Juliet can love each other only when they stop fighting," he says. The movie, directed by Anurag Singh who has earlier given the super-hit Yaar Anmulle, revolves around two completely different people from two different worlds, who are leading comfortable lives till their paths cross when they are on their way to Canada. Says Neeru Bajwa, the heartthrob of Punjabi movie industry, "The two characters — Jatt and Juliet — have been very nicely scripted. Besides, the movie truly lives up to the age-old saying that the feeling of love is strongest at the point of separation." Most of the movie has been shot in Canada and parts of it in Chandigarh as well as various parts of Punjab. Talking about her stint in Bollywood movies, Neeru adds, "Although I have done a couple of Bollywood movies, good roles in Punjabi movies are very satisfying for me." Coming back to Diljit, why such a hue and cry over his songs? "I don't really know. In fact, I have also been doing culturally and spiritually-rooted songs, but they don't get any attention." Pitches in Bajwa, "Lakk kudi da track is one of my favourite; there is nothing vulgar in the song." |

Proud to be a rowdy!
After a string of box-office failures, actor Akshay Kumar is again basking in the success of action flick Rowdy Rathore and the Bollywood star now says he wants to stick to the genre which brought him initial fame and recognition. Akshay began his acting career with action films like Khiladi, Waqt Humara Hai, Mohra, Suhaag, Elaan and Khiladiyo Ka Khiladi.
The 44-year-old then chose to take a break from action films and went on to star in a series of romantic, comedy and drama movies. However, box-office failure of his films like Chandni Chowk To China, Kambakkht Ishq, Khatta Meetha, Action Replayy and Tees Maar Khan dented his stardom. Director Prabhu Deva’s Rowdy Rathore marked the return of Akshay as action hero. The film, which hit theatres on June 1, has apparently joined the Rs 100-crore club and is said to have earned about Rs 114 crore in just two weeks. “I am very much happy and thankful to the audience for their love and support. I love doing action, as Prabhu is fantastic in that...I would love to do action all the time,” said Akshay. He would be seen next in Milan Luthria’s sequel of crime thriller Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Khiladi 786, an action-comedy flick, Shirish Kunder’s adventure project Joker and Neeraj Pandey’s heist drama Special Chabbis. Akshay’s co-actor in Rowdy Rathore Sonakshi Sinha, too, was ecstatic. “I am on cloud 18...I feel I am lucky. I hope people keep accepting me and keep liking my work,” Sonakshi said. — PTI Playing safe: Akshay Kumar

I fear being typecast: Vishwajeet Pradhan
Actor Vishwajeet Pradhan has played the role of a cop a number of times, and he is set to be seen in the khaki uniform yet again in Soham Shah’s Sher. However, he says he fears being typecast and so doesn’t say yes to playing the character easily.
“I have played a cop, a lot over the years and sometimes I get a bit scared of being typecast,” Vishwajeet, seen as a cop in 1998 film Zakhm and 2005 film Zeher said. “Many a number of times I say no when a producer or a director asks me to do a cop’s role, unless the film is very interesting,” he added. Vishwajeet says Sher will have a unique flavour of Bollywood masala. “Our commercial films have somewhat the same substance, but this film is about how the same masala is presented in a new manner. That way it is a very beautiful film with all the commercial elements put in the right place,” he said. Sher features Sanjay Dutt in the lead along with Vivek Oberoi. — IANS

You’ve got votes
Will Smith was named the fittest dad in a Facebook poll conducted by Gold’s Gym recently. Surprisingly, fit and trim footie star David Beckham came in at second place. Smith, 43, — currently staying in shape fighting aliens in Men in Black 3 — got the most votes in the poll.
“We were surprised that Will Smith came out on top,” Gold’s Gym’s vice president of communications, Dave Reiseman, told a publication. “Not because he’s not fit, but because we figured the winner would probably be an athlete of sorts, like David Beckham,” he said. Chris Thor Hemsworth, who stars in The Avengers and Snow White and the Huntsman, rounded out the top three. Smith looked in shape while doing press for MIB 3 in June, looking quite fit for the red carpet events. The fitness chain also asked who were the Hollywood fathers most in need of a workout. The ones who got joke votes included Family Guys Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson, who never met a donut he didn’t drool over in 23 seasons of The Simpsons. — ANI

The 31-year-old actor will next be seen in Kunal Kohli-directed film opposite Priyanka Chopra. Shahid says he loved portraying poet Javed from the earlier part of the 20th century. “I have never played a character like Javed earlier. He is a little bit of a casanova. Create ‘Lag’
Jesse Grewal One of the hallmarks of great players in any game is that they hit the ball ‘late’. Top class cricketers , tennis players and golfers are considered to be ‘in form’ when they have the right timing. In most of these games the hands are always leading the bat/racket/club at impact which is what is considered hitting the ball ‘late’. For golfers this move is done by creating a lag of the club in the downswing. Casting is the opposite of lagging and leads to poorly timed shots and errors in direction, contact and trajectory. During the backswing the right elbow folds approximately 90 degrees (for right handed golfers) and there is another 90 degree or more angle formed between the forearm and the club shaft (wrist cock). At the top of the backswing these two right angles are seen in the right arm (picture 1). The downswing is initiated by the turning motion of the hips followed by a dropping action of the arms. The left side of the body is creating a pulling action which helps us retain these two right angles in the right arm during the first part of the downswing (picture 2). As the body rotates towards the target the centrifugal force generated begins to straighten the right elbow followed by the straightening of the wrist of the release of the club head (picture 3). These two moves happen automatically due to the rotation of the body as there is a conservation of angular momentum. In an incorrect release the right arm begins to throw out the club independently which leads to a loss of these angles on the downswing. This work of the right hand throws out the club too early which flips over the wrists at impact. This leads to duffed shots, loss of distance caused by adding or increasing the loft of the club and the ball going left. Most golfers associate this move as using ‘force’. Try and reduce the work of the hands on the downswing and let it happen with the turning action of the body. This will help create lag and a ‘late’ hit. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently Director, National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy.) |

High designs
Designing dresses is not just putting everything ‘latest’ in the creations. For young designer, Shruti Singla, designing is equal to creating personalities. And when this is a job, one just can’t take it easy. Sitting in her newly opened designer studio, Ruchi S in Panchkula, Shruti shares her little dream and passion, which has now become her profession as well.
“There was nothing that appealed to me more than designing dresses; I just wanted to be a designer. I pursued my apparel designing course from NIFT and after completing studies, decided to open my own studio,” Shruti says everything in one breath. This young designer boasts of making every person who walks in at her designer studio a fashion icon. “I realised it is how well one carries herself or himself is what makes heads turn,” says Shruti, whose chic designer studio is spread over 640 square feet of selling area. The studio caters to just about everything from casual, corporate, party to wedding dresses, but Shruti feels there is still a need to understand the difference between a designer studio and a boutique. “As I said, I believe in designing a complete personality for my client. I wouldn’t give him or her any dress that doesn’t look good. I would rather say a polite no,’ Shruti adds. Designing apparels for men and women, the designer has a quick tip to share with all working women. ‘Please leave black for men, they don’t have many colours to wear to office. Women can wear bright colours to the office as well.”

Win(e)some tips
Dr Sonia Gandhi Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented fruit juice, usually from grapes. The natural chemical balance of grapes lets them ferment without the addition of sugars, amino acids, enzymes, or other nutrients. Yeast consumes the sugars in the grapes and converts them into alcohol. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts produce different types of wine. Health benefits Red wine is a rich source of biologically active photochemical, chemicals found in plants. Particular compounds called polyphenols found in red wine—such as catechins and resveratrol (present in skin of the grapes)—are thought to have antioxidant or anticancer properties. It also helps prevent heart disease by raising good cholesterol levels and protecting the arteries from damage. However, there is growing evidence that the health benefits of red wine are related to its nonalcoholic components. Moderate consumption of any alcoholic drink with balanced intake of calories and nutrients can be recommended with the advice of experts. Nutritional value of red/other wines Calories: One 5-oz serving of red wine contains 125 calories. These calories come primarily from the 15.6 g of alcohol and 3.8 g of carbohydrates in each serving. One serving contains less than one gram of sugar and no fiber. Fat and protein: Very few of the calories in red wine come from protein or fat. One serving contains no fat and only .1 g of protein. Wine also contains no cholesterol. Minerals: Red wine provides small amounts of many minerals such as iron, potassium, manganese, magnesium and phosphorus. Red wine is also quite high in fluoride, important for cavity prevention and bone formation. Vitamins: While red wine provides numerous minerals, it is quite low in vitamins such as vitamin B6, riboflavin and choline. Each serving contains 1 percent or less of all other vitamins. Health risks of wine Wine, however, is not for everyone. Certain medical conditions are worsened by the consumption of wine, so it’s vital you seek the advice of your personal physician/nutritionist. Here are a few things to know: High triglycerides: One downside to wine consumption is that it can elevate triglyceride levels, which is associated with health problems such as diabetes. Those who already have high triglycerides should, therefore, avoid or dramatically limit their wine (and alcohol) consumption. Breast cancer risk: Studies have shown alcohol can increase estrogen levels and raise tumor progression in women with (or at high risk for) estrogen positive breast cancer. Migraines: Wine is often a trigger for people who suffer migraine headaches. Although white wine contains more sulfites than red wine (sulfites are added to white wine to preserve its light color), red wine seems to be a much bigger migraine trigger. That’s probably due to the accumulation of histamines and tannins from prolonged contact with the skin. Weight gain: People who drink alcohol also consume empty calories, calories that lack nutrients and can lead to weight gain. Alcohol is a drug that has the immediate effect of altering mood, but in fact it is a depressant. It switches off the part of brain that controls judgment, leading to loss of inhibitions. The liver breaks down and eliminates alcohol from the body. It takes the liver one hour to deal with one unit of alcohol. Excess drinking can harm liver and many other vital organs. Recommended intake of wine:
n
One unit of alcohol is 10ml by volume or 8 grams by weight of pure alcohol. n
Each gram of alcohol gives 7 calories. n
Recommendation is no more than two units of alcohol for women or three units for men. n
A small glass of ordinary wine (125ml) contains (12% alcohol by volume) n
125 ml wine contains units of alcohol are: 125*12/1000: 1.5 units n
Men: No more than two drinks per day. n
Women: No more than one drink per day. ( Dr Gandhi is a senior clinical |

Bang on
Manpriya Singh The music, at first, sounds like sticking your neck out in an industrial furnace. Heavy metal is not for the week hearted. The genre that did not got the respect it wanted but got the recognition it demanded. Also referred to as, metal, heavy metal is a sub genre of rock music that came to the fore only in the 1970s and largely in the US. The bands that came to be associated with heavy metal had a characteristic thick, massive sound, lots of loudness and overpowering guitar beats. Most popular musicians/ artists of the genre First, there was the unclear distinction between hard rock and heavy metal, then came the punk versus metal. It’s never easy but certain name dropping might crystallise things. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Metallica…there’s no dearth of the commercially successful heavy metal poster boys. But Judas Priest clearly remains the genre’s most notable band. Are we forgetting Guns N Roses? They cruised into the heavy metal mainstream with catchy tunes and a harder edge than their counterparts. Iron Man by Black Sabbath remains the true blue heavy metal stuff. Like it was once famously described “like an iron bloke walking about.” Even before anybody knew, very soon, the genre came into its own, heavy metal fans were being labeled as the headbangers or metalheads. And that’s how they pretty much remain, till this date. And don’t they all love being called so? Interestingly, with the rise of the genre in the seventies came the aspiring metal heads and features on how to be a metal head! Youngster’s version of the genre It’s a genre that has its roots in the blues rock and psychedelic rock, but still came of its own. Shares Pearls Singh, functional English student, guitarist with a city based band, “Alice in Chains remains one of my favourite heavy metal bands. They are weirder, bluesier and heavier than anybody else. Next comes the Sound Garden.” She adds, “Black Sabbath was also the ultimate symbols of darkness. With their strong music and energised performances.” There is an echo. Shares Taran Gill, B. SC student, “I like this genre for what it is. Even now we might have a small fraction of metal heads but they are not stereotypically long haired, tattooed, gothic males.” He adds, “I attended this student fest Cyanide a few years back and a lot of college bands did covers of heavy metal bands and they were a big hit.” manpriya@tribunemail.com |

Best of the Orient
The heat is beating down and had it not been for something to divert your mind, it would have been impossible to cope up. And when the mind is diverted by newly opened The Oriental Blossom, a Chinese specialty restaurant at Hotel Park Plaza, in Sector 17, the heat takes a back seat. With Oriental music playing in the background, some interesting paintings and artifacts on the walls and a detailed oriental menu, the place sure spells luxury.
Says Har Avtar Singh Arora, managing director, Park Plaza, Chandigarh, who is settled in London, “I’m very passionate about dining at fine cuisine restaurants and I know what kind of taste buds people have all around the world.” The order can be made on a la carte basis and there is also an option of set meals, which costs approximately Rs 500 per head and can be made if there are eight people or more. The menu, which is beautifully designed in black and white, boasts of many appetisers, including lobsters, tiger prawns, pomfrets, squids, chicken, lamb and vegetables prepared in different sauces. But before all this, while you are waiting for your order to be served, there is kimchi salad, masala peanuts and jasmine tea. There are also barbeque platters, spring rolls and dimsums. Something that stands out is the chimney soup, which keeps warm in the dish that it is served in. The dishes are finalised by Master Chef Huang, who has trained the rest of the staff in preparing authentic Chinese food in Schezwan and Cantonese styles. The Oriental Blossom is already functional in metros such as Delhi, Mumbai and Ahemdabad, and getting a very good response. “Our main aim to is to serve our costumers with good food and that too at a reasonable price,” says Rajesh Rajan, director properties, Sarovar Hotels and Resorts. So what more is there fo0r the taste-buds? “There is a main course, which includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian items cooked in sauces with unique flavours to go along with the rice and noodles,” adds Rajesh. And last but not the least, to gratify your sweet tooth there are desserts like honey tossed noodles, banana fritters, coconut blossom served with portions of ice-cream! sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com
