Varela strike bites Danes
Lviv, June 13 Goals from Pepe and Helder Postiga had Paulo Bento's side coasting but Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner appeared to have secured a point as he continued his remarkable scoring spree against the Portuguese with both of his country's efforts to take his tally to six in five matches against their European rivals. The win gave Portugal their first points of the tournament and ensured they go to the last match still in with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals. Having wrestled the early initiative from Denmark, who lost Niki Zimling to an early calf injury, Ronaldo failed to test goalkeeper Stephan Anderson with a free-kick from wide on the left but their next two set-pieces were more productive. Miguel Veloso's long-range free-kick saw Postiga's shot deflected wide but from the resulting 24th-minute corner Portugal took the lead. Nani's inswinging cross picked out the run of the unmarked Pepe and the Real Madrid defender's glancing header beat Anderson at his near post. Boosted by the goal Portugal continued to press forward and doubled their lead 12 minutes later. Simon Kjaer's clearance from Fabio Coentrao's cross only reached Joao Pereira who quickly transferred the ball to Nani and his square pass was smartly converted by Postiga. Christian Eriksen registered Denmark's first shot on target to draw a save from Rui Patricio but the Portugal goalkeeper was helpless to prevent the Danes from pulling one back four minutes before half-time. Jakob Poulsen's hanging cross to the far post picked out Michael Krohn-Dehli who headed back across goal for Bendtner to nod home his 19th international goal in his 50th appearance. Portugal should have re-established their cushion five minutes into the second half after Kjaer's misjudgement of Nani's crossfield pass sent Ronaldo racing clear but he shot too close to Andersen. — Agencies |
Warsaw, June 13 A goal by Alan Dzagoev yesterday in the first-half - his third of the tournament - was cancelled out in spectacular fashion in the second-half by Polish captain Kuba Blaszczykowski. Dutch coach Dick Advocaat praised Poland for their performance but added he was happy with the point. "Poland played very well tonight being under the risk of losing the chance to win a place in the last eight if they lost," he said. — AFP |
Spain play Ireland
Gdansk, June 13 The Irish are making only their second appearance at a European championship and Trapattoni says his team must concentrate and show belief if they are to avoid exiting after the group stages, as they did back in 1988. "We have another 90 minutes coming. We have to believe. Every game in this Euro could be a surprise. We have to believe this," he said. It has been a decade since the 2002 World Cup, the last time an Irish team appeared at a major finals - they exited in the second round beaten in a penalty shootout by the Spaniards - but Trapattoni's team now have their work cut out as they face Spain, followed by Italy, who drew 1-1 here on Sunday. Having taken charge of Ireland in 2008, Trapattoni has acquired cult status in Ireland having produced such gems as 'I am not Jesus Christ, I cannot work miracles!' during his reign.

Italy face Croatia
Krakow, June 13 Looking back in the record books, it's hard to argue with Prandelli entering tomorrow's game in Poznan. Italy hasn't beaten its Mediterranean neighbor in their five meetings since Croatia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991, and the Azzurri are also winless in their second match at their last five major tournaments. What's more is that Croatia leads Group C after opening with an impressive 3-1 win over Ireland. Italy also was praised after drawing 1-1 with defending champion Spain. "It's going to be the decisive match of the group," Prandelli said. "I've been saying for a while that Croatia is the most dangerous squad because it's the most unpredictable one. They change the way they play all the time, sometimes even from one half to another." Croatia is also ranked four spots above Italy in the FIFA rankings - No. 8 vs. No. 12 - but that doesn't mean much to Croatia coach Slaven Bilic.

YFC Rurka Kalan beat Orion
Deepankar Sharda Tribune News Service
Mandi, June 13 From the word go, both teams tried to stretch the play and the half-backs were hugely involved. While YFC were targeting the flanks, Orion continued to target the sweepers by playing in long balls. In the 20th minute, the YFC forwards earned their first corner but failed to convert it. In reply, Orion built a counter attack but they also failed to finish the attack. Later, YFC sharpened their offence and won as many as five corners but poor finishing meant that it stayed a stalemate at half-time. The second half saw the teams indulge in a see-saw for control of the ball. Finally, in the 66th minute, YFC’s right-stopper failed to stop Harmin D’souza from taking an open shot from the top of the penalty area. But YFC were back on level pegging when half-back Mahinderjeet Singh struck in the 77th minute. With scores level, the match went to a direct tie-breaker. In the decider, for the winning side, Jagjit Singh, Papai, Gaurav, Nariender Gippy and Gurmail Singh posted goals while for the Orion team Muzamdil, Zedan and Trianal Das scored one goal each whereas Sehlasher failed to convert the awarded chance for the team. In the second match of the evening, the DFA Hoshiarpur defeated Tamil Nadu police by a solitary goal scored by Jatinder Singh in the 68th minute of the match. |
Rival coaches behind sexual harrassment case: SAI report
Chandigarh, June 13 According to a source in the SAI, the investigations have revealed that rivalry between coaches led to the filing of a complaint of sexual harassment with the Sports Minister Ajay Maken last month. The complaint was made in writing and was signed by four girls, but all four of them have told the investigating committee, led by SAI’s Lucknow centre director Rachana Govil, that their signatures were forged. Govil confirmed that she has filed the report but refused to discuss its contents. A SAI official, however, told The Tribune that they were dismissing the charges against the coach as they seem fabricated and there is no basis to pursue the case. The nature of the complaint was very peculiar, according to the source. “No one girl had said that she herself had been harassed,” says the source. “They had complained that someone else had been harassed. This was very suspicious.” The girls told the investigating committee that they faced no problems at the camp. They put into writing that the incident cited in the complaint, when a coach allegedly tried to enter a girl’s room at night, never occurred. They also said that the controversy was created to mar their image and curtail their wrestling careers. According to an SAI official, the controversy was likely caused by the rivalry between coaches from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The SAI had barred the coach in the centre of the controversy from coaching or travelling with the girls. The junior team won two gold, one silver and five bronze medals at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championship in Almaty, for which they’d been training at Lucknow. |

Kalmadi, Bhanot back in IOA fold
New Delhi, June 13 “The stigma and untouchability imposed on Kalmadi and Bhanot (chairman and secretary-general of the controversy-ridden Commonwealth Games 2010, respectively), after being jailed have been erased,” observed a top IOA official. “The meeting was a smooth affair, unlike in the past.” The votes of States were curtailed from two to half, and that of the National Sports Federations (NSFs) from three to two. Union Territory-States like Delhi and Pondicherry have been given two votes each while Chandigarh will get one vote. The Kho-Kho Federation, which is not a recognized Olympic sports body, has been given two votes. Malhotra said the meeting urged the Union Government to give approval and sanction funds to host the South Asian Games early next year, before the IOA decides on the date and venue. “It will be a great shame and loss of face for the country if we don’t organize the games,” said

Unruly Pole, Russia fans detained
Warsaw: Police used an arsenal of tear gas, water cannon, rubber bullets and pepper spray and detained dozens of brawling football fans ahead of a key Euro 2012 match between Poland and Russia. Police said they had detained nearly 130 unruly fans on both sides while about 10 were treated for minor injuries before the match, which the authorities said posed the city's "greatest ever" security challenge. Tension was stoked by centuries of bad blood and suspicion between the two countries, coupled with pockets of fans on both sides with a reputation for violence. But the 1-1 result appeared to have eased the post-match mood, with no major incidents reported after midnight, as Poles celebrated their chance to advance in the 16-nation quadrennial tournament they are co-hosting with Ukraine. — AFP UEFA condemns fan violence
Warsaw: European football's governing body today condemned clashes between rival supporters at the highly charged Euro 2012 match between co-hosts Poland and old rivals Russia in Warsaw. "UEFA condemns the isolated incidents that occurred yesterday (Tuesday)... when some groups of known troublemakers pelted the police with missiles and attacked fans irrespective of the team they were supporting," it said in an emailed statement. "Those arrested and charged will have to be dealt with by the relevant authorities." The match, which ended 1-1, was played amid tight security and a fiercely political backdrop, with both countries' recent and past history intertwined and lingering resentment among the Poles creating an intense sporting rivalry.
