Progressive thoughts
For DJ Jon O'Bir, who ranks 132 in the world, progressive house is the genre which is closest to his heart
As a resident DJ, he's plays at Godskitchen, UK, traverses across the globe, but doesn't complain, "The journey's been good, we had a stopover in Delhi and it's completely different weather in India." Spinning is a serious business and Jon O'Bir is taking rounds all over. "It's my second time in India and first in Chandigarh. I like to travel to different places. I discovered India last year and it was an eye opener for me, we had a great time." He came to the city for the launch of Hotel Altius's Ten Downing Street. Talking about his music, he says, "I play trance, progressive house but it totally depends on the crowd, what they like more and what they are responsive to. I am flexible." Flexible enough to even fish out the local tastes and dish out accordingly. "I have this music database from where I can easily search out even Punjabi music, if need be." With the quick-fixes all in place, progressive house is what he'd make everybody listen to if left to him. "I love to play progressive house, it's groovy and I like to make people dance."
The number 132 is a queer ranking for a DJ to have. You're there and yet not a part of the top 100 cut off list. But Jon is happy. "I'm quite happy with the ranking and where I've arrived. We have this website by a magazine on which you are supposed to go and vote. There are countless people who vote and support their favourites and that's how the rankings are arrived at." It's been a long journey to reach up to this league and ranking. "I'd follow my brother Kevin a lot. I always listened to his music, there was always music in the car, in the house, I'd also listen to BBC radio. Then gigs and a stint with two European trance artistes followed and an association with this record label from Nottingham." Nottingham, the place, in England, where he comes from. "The place of Robin Hood and Jane Austen," he winks. The rest, as is evident, is history. His India tour kicked off with Chandigarh and goes to three other cities, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. "India, last year, was an eye opener. The crowd was so energetic, the people so warm and the entire experience a pleasant surprise." manpriya@tribunemail.com |

She's got the look
The venue of the music concert has been shifted from a resort near Morni Hills to JW Marriott. The reason cited for the change by the organiser is, "We were flooded with inquiries about DJ Emely, (who will perform at the event) and we realised that at the earlier venue not many people will be able to make it to 'see' her." No wonder, why 'seeing' this DJ is a bit more important than listening to the kind of music she plays. One, she is strikingly beautiful, two, she is dressed up for the occasion. Aptly or not, that's debatable (a white tube dress in satin with tantalizing hemline which gave the feeling that a wardrobe malfunction is waiting to happen)!
Being in a profession that demands night shifts, she admits, it's just not easy to take care of skin, hair and health, "But I do my bit to take care of myself. I am teetotaler; I don't smoke and hit the gym five times a week for one and a half hours each day," says the DJ who is in Chandigarh to perform at the console at The Bling, a music concert to be held on June 10. The rest, she adds is taken care of by music. What began as a hobby got translated into profession four years back. She specialises in-house and R&B styles. Now, she is touted to be one of the best female DJs of Ukraine. "It's a male dominated industry and when I started, I was the only one to represent women on the turn tables. But if you work well and focus on playing great music, gender doesn't matter." At the concert, she will play a few Punjabi and Bollywood tracks. A research on what people in the city will like is on. "I will mix Punjabi music with international hits. It's very important for a DJ to understand what kind music people like. They lose interest if the DJ plays his own thing without checking their preference." Having travelled to various counties, she finds playing music at different places more interesting than being just a house DJ. "That gives me an opportunity to get to see so many cultures and know about music of other countries." On that note, she says India is about Bollwood music. "It's not very difficult to understand. The beats used are very international. Only the language is different but music equals it all, its language is actually universal." Who said beauty and brains is a rare combination! ashima@tribunemail.com

A comic punch
Only those who have true passion for theatre can survive in the field, believes Sangeeta Gupta. Two decades into it, she is ready to stage her play 'Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya' on Saturday at Tagore Theatre -18. A tête-à-tête with her…
What is 'Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya' about? It's a satire on so called modern day 'saints'. A family with no source of income turns their son into a 'baba' and what follows is a series of hilarious episodes that comment on the reality around us. Nine actors play 40 different characters in this two-hour-fifteen-minute play. And, the message is to follow the words of wisdom as given in Guru ki bani. If you go looking outside, well, be ready for exploitation! How about the commercial viability of the theatre in the region? Theatre is a field for those who are obsessed with it. It's no place for material gains. There have been good times and also times when I have been worried about what will we eat next month. We would want theatre to be ticketed and free from tax and are working towards it. Do you think ticket system can help theatre flourish? I am positive about it. At each of the shows we place a donation box. Each time, there is enough money, what we intend to collect through tickets. But there is a difference between right and charity. Ticket system would be rather honourable for us. But for that we have to raise the quality way up. Tell us about your recent projects. Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya' is an old play in a new form. The storyline is changed, also the characters. You will see known faces of Punjabi industry here. Gurchet Chitarkar, Bhajna Amli, Satwinder Kaur are a few of them. We worked on Tagore's stories last and will have a play on Munshi Prem Chand's stories in July. We also have plans of taking 'Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya' abroad. How do you compare
theatre here to that on the national level? Honestly, the National School of Drama is in a different league altogether. They have the best of training, resources and rehearsals. We don't even try to match up to them. But at our own level, we try to better our work at each level be it storyline, presentation or experimentation. What else keeps you
occupied? Theatre is my lifeline. I also feel strongly about my mother tongue. I have dubbed cartoon serials in Punjabi. And, very soon 10 major Hollywood films will be aired on a Punjabi channel. You will be amazed to see their dubbing quality. It is if those characters belong to Punjab only. 'Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya', directed by Sangeeta Gupta, will be staged on Saturday at Tagore Theatre-18 at 7pm. mona@tribunemail.com

I've not insulted medical profession: Aamir Khan
Pats and brickbats —Aamir Khan was prepared for it all when he set out to discuss burning issues in his debut TV show Satyamev Jayate.
Fearless and convinced about the aim of the show, the actor-filmmaker says he is totally unapologetic about raising the issue of malpractices in the medical profession, thereby upsetting an umbrella body of 21 medical institutions. "I have absolutely no intentions of apologising because I have not done anything wrong," Aamir said in an interview. After raising concerns over female foeticide, dowry and child abuse, Aamir took it upon himself to shake up viewers and awaken them to the existence of irregularities in the country's healthcare system. He brought issues like cut practices, unethical medical practices, and commission demands to the fore and presented live examples of people who could have been cured with simple medicines but were advised by doctors to undergo surgeries, robbing them of precious money. This 'exposure' has landed Aamir in the bad books of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). But he does not fret! "We were aware that since these are issues that are core to all of us and affecting every Indian, obviously there are some people who are part of the problem, and they are not going to be happy with us because these are the ones who don't want a solution to be there. "In fact, I would have been surprised if we would not have earned brickbats. The people who are getting troubled are very likely the ones who are part of the problems," said Aamir, adding that he hasn't received any physical threats so far. He protests against the allegation that he only highlighted the negative aspects of the medical profession on his show, to which was invited KK Talwar, chairman, board of governors, Medical Council of India (MCI). "I don't know whether they have seen the show because a number of times we brought out that there are many doctors who are doing great work. We gave such strong examples of positive work by doctors like Dr Devi Shetty and Dr Shamit Sharma," Aamir said. He denied the accusation that he insulted the medical profession. "I have not insulted the medical profession at all. I have the highest regard for the medical profession. In fact what is insulting to the medical profession is those doctors who are indulging in unethical practices. They have insulted the medical profession, not me," he said. Aamir says his conviction in the concept and aim of the show has left him fearless of negative reactions.

Maximum change
The film Maximum is about to be released by the end of this month and one sees former Miss India Neha Dhupia in a sari clad role for the first time.
Not in the number race, Neha is happy with her fair share on screen. "I have learnt to be content and I am pretty delighted with the kind of work that I am doing," she says.
Her latest, Maximum, a crime thriller, directed by Kabeer Kaushik has Naseeruddin Shah, Sonu Sood, and Vinay Pathak in the cast. "I play Priya, a wife. She is someone who plays a balancing factor in this otherwise racy thriller," says Neha, who enjoyed the experience. "This is my first sari-clad role, so shooting was a different feeling all-together but fun. The best was to work with such fabulous cast," she adds.
Working on her looks and personality everyday is what has stayed on with Neha from her Miss India experience. "In real, I am as much a normal girl as any other who loves to shop for fancy clothes and sleep in free time," says the actor who will next be seen in I Am 24 and Rush.

Kristen Stewart has described herself as “kind of a weirdo, who smokes pot.” The Twilight star was referring to the moment she realised that the vampire franchise would turn her instantly into a celebrity. “You can Google my name and one of the first things that comes up is images of me, smoking a pipe,” she said in an interview. “It was taken the day the movie (Twilight) came out. I was no one. I was a kid. The next day it was like I was a delinquent slimy idiot. “I’m kind of a weirdo, creative Valley Girl who smokes pot. Big deal. But that changed my life instantly. The 24-year-old actress also spoke about how she’s found certain elements of fame scary since the first Twilight film was released in 2008 and catapulted her into international consciousness. “It’s not the fans that are scary, large groups of people are scary. There’s no individual there,” she said. But she admits she is enjoying one perk of being famous - the free clothes and learning about high fashion, which surprised her boyfriend and Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson: “I never saw that coming.” The hunky actor also, defended Stewart against accusations of being too grumpy: “People have decided how they are going to perceive her. “No matter how many times she smiles, they’ll put in the one picture where she’s not smiling,” he added. — ANI |

Cold is hot!
Come summer and everyone is looking for cooler options, whether it is in fabrics, colours or flavours. And talking of food, who can resist a sumptuous salad or cold soup in this heat? Healthy and appetising, this is one form of fare that can never fail to whet the appetite. So, this summer we find out some interesting and healthy ways to make your salads and cold soups that are hot in flavour yet cool in taste!
“Salads are definitely
in demand during the summer and considering people’s health consciousness they are definitely the best-sellers,” says Bhagwati Semwal, general manager, Buzzczar in
Sector 35. Giving some tips to make a salad more flavoursome, he says, “Lemon, mayonnaise and yoghurt make for a great dressing. Spice up these dressing with salt, pepper, mustard powder and a pinch of sugar. If you are not fond of mayonnaise then you can add a teaspoon of malai.” However, a word of advice, “While making cold salads keep it in mind that they have to be served chilled, not just cold. So, refrigerate the dressing the moment you make it and then do the same with the ingredients. And after you mix both, put them in the refrigerator and serve chilled.” Salad is a complete meal in itself. If you are a salad person then you can add brown, garlic or toasted bread for a wholesome meal. Going by the dieticians, they too believe that raw
vegetables (not all) easily slip through the system and do not create obstructions. Nalini, a dietician from Panchkula, says, “All vegetables can not be
eaten raw. Some need cooking. Carrots, cabbage, capsicum, peas can be eaten raw, but beans, brinjal, ladyfinger etc need
to be cooked as they have harsh fibres that need processing.” Suggesting that pulses should be added to vegetables to make it wholesome, she says, “One can use rajmah, channa, moong, soya bean and dal along with veggies to make it a complete meal. And for non-veggies they can use boiled chicken instead of paneer or dal. And another way to add pulses is through sprouts.” Informing us more about flavours in salads Ravi, manager, Backpackers Café in Sector 8, says, “Ingredients can vary from honey to mustard sauce to peanut butter sauce to make it different from usual salads.” But considering the heat, he suggests, “Since the heat is too much to bear, lemon, olive oil and mayonnaise dressing is best options.”
