Wild and beautiful
The vast expanses of deodar trees for a view, the sun-kissed colonial building and top-of-the-line luxury, make Wildflower Hall & Oberoi Cecil the perfect getaway for the summer
Ashima Batish

The spa room at Oberoi Cecil
The spa room at Oberoi Cecil

On way to the Wildflower Hall, the chauffer turned back to share, “If this is your first time to the resort, you will come back with this resolve to come back again and again.”

A bit of his convincing tone and a bit of facts about this place — it’s nestled in the Himalayas at the height 8250 feet, it now occupies the space where Lord Kitchener built his summer get-away, it offers an array of services and view of the snow-clad mountain peaks that brings you closer to nature—gave me some idea of what a rewarding experience it was going to be.

The 45-minute-journey from Oberoi Cecil, Shimla to Wildflower Hall was then spent fantasising about the destination. Not very often reality is more enticing than fantasy. But this time it was! The sun managed to pierce through the sky reaching the deodar trees and the game of shadows began in the garden restaurant of the resort. It continued till the sunset. In the meanwhile, only the play area changed, from the garden to the lobby to the terrace restaurant, till it finally receded. Out there, you become a part of it gradually. “Which is what draws people here, far from the madding crowd,” came from Abhishek Sharma, general manager of the resort, who agreed with me, like he does with all other tourists who come to get respite from the concrete jungle.

The lobby at the resort
The lobby at the resort

I soaked in the experience, the warm, cozy interiors in wood of the lobby helped further. Contrary to what I thought that the original building has been restored, Abhishek was quick to correct me, Lord Kitchener’s original structure got burnt down. But the essence of the older structure remains intact, which is evident not just from the painting of the original owner, covering ample space on the wall of the lobby, but also in the colonial influences in the wood work, in the black and white photographs that chronicle the history of the resort on its walls, in the pianos, the card room …which is another common factor between the Cecil, Shimla and Wildflower Hall, besides the fact that these are Oberoi properties.

The brochure highlights the services that the resort offers. Spa was certainly the most tempting one I came across. What else can beat the pleasant experience of enjoying one while the expanse of Himalayas makes for a perfect view? But luxury here also encompasses adventure. And you won’t qualify for a nature lover if you don’t have the urge to explore it by trekking, mountain biking, river-rafting in the mountains.

Earlier, the experience at Oberoi Cecil was equally pleasing. If Wildflower Hall promises luxury amidst nature in the present times, Cecil takes you back to the Raj. The 150-year-old heritage hotel gives a panoramic view of the Himalayas again. Its restaurants serve authentic cuisines. The humble yellow dal served in the restaurant was cooked to perfection, with as much attention as was paid to the three-course continental food. “All in a bid to promise a holistic experience,” said Nitish Gandhi, general manager of Cecil. He then pointed out what makes Cecil so special, “It’s in Shimla, a city that offers the best blend of city life and nature. You hear the honks but you also hear the blowing winds, the chirping of birds. You see people rushing to work here, you also see chestnut, deodar trees.”

And even here the game of shadows is played on a clear day. A game that’s enticing enough to lure one for another helping!

Lakshya 2012, the annual fashion show of IIFT, Mohali, promises to bring the east and west together in the most innovative way
Sabia Talwar

Fashion is a global phenomenon, so the same should be reflected through the fashion trends. The IIFT, Mohali is coming up with its annual fashion show, Lakshya 2012, Chandigarh with a similar vision.

Says Kaushik Ghosh, one of India’s leading fashion choreographers, “This is my sixth year of choreographing a fashion show for IIFT Mohali and I wanted a different concept, so this time we have five international models and five Indian models.”

The budding designers had to go through a tough competition to finally make it to the show. “Among 80 entries, we selected 60 outfits which the models will sport and it was a close competition,” says Kanwaljeet Singh, director, IIFT, Mohali.

So, the idea is quite clear that models from UK, Scandavia, France, who have walked the ramp for international fashion shows, will walk the ramps for the international wear rounds. And, the Indian models like Femina Miss Congeniality 2007, Shipra Malik, Hida Siddiqui, who have walked the ramp for Wills Fashion Weeks, will sport the Indian dresses. “There are eight sequences in total which have collections under various themes, ” adds Kanwaljeet. The collection includes sarees, Indian suits, evening gowns, single piece dresses and much more. “These young designers are very promising and have kept international standards in mind while designing the collections,” chips in Kaushik.

Even Kaushik has worked hard on the choreography of the show which will have music from the 70s and 80s giving it a retro touch. Says Kaushik, “The sequences are less and the duration of the show is near about 40 minutes with a little bit of dancing element thrown to it for added zing. There will be disco music for the international models and Sufi for the Indian ones.”

As for the students, they have decided on presenting some very well-thought themes like Bohemian Tamasha, Beneath the Sea, Vanity Flows, Untamed Scandal, Clash of Textures, the Vogue and more.

Says Osheeba Kakaw, a diploma student in fashion designing, “There are a lot of masquerade parties happening these days and Chandigarh is a place where concept of clubbing is picking up. So, I have come up with the theme of ‘negra ele canta’ which means black elegance. There are single-piece dresses in synthetic fabrics with the base colour as black but embroidered with colourful butterflies on them accessorised with masks and hats.”

Vidya Balan has surely made sarees the most fashionable outfit recently. “Nowadays not only Indian celebrities but also international ones are sporting sarees. So, my collection, Bohemian Tamasha, has ready-to-tie sarees and the ones which can be draped in colours like exotic blues and hot pinks with smart boluses giving the authentic Indian wear a modern look,” says Damini Anand, another student. So, get ready to see a fusion of Indian minds and western presenters.

After Kate Middleton made it popular, with her wedding dress, lace has suddenly become every designer’s muse
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

The summer season presents many new exciting trends. From bright hues to mix prints and retro fashion, now there is lace for us to get excited about!

Though lace is a trend that made a comeback last year, this season it is more of an added trimming rather than a complete ensemble like Kate Middleton’s wedding dress that only accentuated the trend of lace last year.

And, as this piece of fabric makes its presence felt on almost all things, including bags and shoes, let’s talk about lace as it is the muse of almost every designer.

“Lace is being used in all sorts of medium and style. We saw 70?s bohemian lace in Just Cavalli collection and tablecloth lace in international brands and coloured lace made its presence felt at the red carpet for People’s Choice Awards,” says Divya Kapoor from Samsara. She adds, “Our designers have been using lace, both in full looks and as trims and embellishments.”

Making a global presence, designer Christopher Kane designed fabrics such as leather and ‘pleather’ to replicate lace but on the other hand we now have lace in special techniques such as laser cut-outs and appliqués in shoes and handbags.

“Delicate lace has been in fashion for a long time but now it is being seen with beaded embellishments and in combination with other fabrics such as chiffon,” says Rashmi Bindra, designer and entrepreneur.

Using bows and floral embellishments in combination with sheer lace ruffles and satin details, definitely goes in making lace more glamourous. “The white lace that lends a romantic feeling is quite a rage and from baby doll dresses to peasant tops, maxi dresses and frilly blouses, it is seen everywhere,” says Rajneesh Jain from Meena Bazaar. He adds, “In Indian wear, the lace is more exaggerated and we can see the use of antique style lace or the crochet and white eyelet details into trims and patchwork layers.”

Let’s not forget to mention the coloured lace. It has the essence of the 50s. Expect to see coloured lace dresses and feminine skirts mostly paired with spring’s bouquet of floral fabrics and trims.

Musical spin
9inchheels.com Entertainment comes to Chandigarh with the first-of-its-kind music festival…
Jasmine Singh

Every second youngster you meet will flaunt a handset loaded with music of almost all genres; ipod plugged in the ears is nothing uncommon these days. Global music is the new language, but since it is still being scripted, this new language is yet to gain popularity.

And one thing that guarantees this popularity is music festivals. Oh yes, the first name to be dropped here is the Goa Sunburn Festival, and off and on music concerts taking place in the metros. So, someone from Chandigarh thought it was time the city had a music festival of its own. 9inchheels.com Entertainment comes with the first-of-its-kind music festival The Bling, which will be held at the Golden Tulip Spa Resort, Morni Road, on June 2.

Gurjit Budwal, managing director of 9inchheels.com Entertainment, is the man who shot the most expensive and lengthy video Lift Kara Dey Remix (Adnan Sami) and also the brain behind this spin. “Along with my partner Prashant, I would hear of all kinds of music festivals across the globe. We thought of bringing something to the city. The Bling will be one such musical night, which will see the best from many genres.”

A crowd of hundreds swaying to the notes of music, different symphonies mesmersing the senses, music festivals have always been the most sought-after thing for music-lovers. At The Bling, Bollywood singer Neeraj Shridhar, Dj Amely, from Ukraine, and Milli Moonstone, from London, will whip up music from different genres. Adds Gurjit, “The concept of live music festivals is growing up at a fast pace; exposure to international music has increased. A music festival brings in different shades of music. With The Bling, we plan to do the same; where people will enjoy music followed by an after-party.”

There is someone in the group who has experienced and seen global music growing - Flora Baker, a writer who is also handling work for Milli Moonstone. “Music brings together different cultures and a festival like this will definitely expose music lovers to different kinds of traditional as well as contemporary forms.”

Lift your spirit
Dr Vikas Sharma

Sagging skin is an inevitable part of ageing and this is how the significance of face lifts arises. Sagging is caused due to the effect of gravity on the aged skin that is deprived of its stock of elastin and collagen that hold it tight. Also, the skin loses the moisture retaining capacity, thereby depriving the skin of its important natural protective mechanism.

Though ageing is a natural phenomenon and trying to stop it will have its own benefits and repercussions. In the coming years we are going to witness explosive developments in the anti-aging treatments. The modern generation and their desire to turn back the clock while maintaining an active life style has favoured the popularity of newer anti-ageing techniques.

Surgery no more!

Face lifts were mainly performed surgically but the problems of invasiveness and large downtime have made the dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons to look for non-surgical face lifts requiring minimal downtime. Though not as effective as surgical ones, but for those with minimal and initial sagging or ageing skin, face lifts with mesotherapy is an interesting option.

This technique is a unique combination of art and science, a medical specialty using painless microinjections of fillers, vitamins, herbs and skin enhancing pharmaceuticals in specific formulations. Mesotherapy can be applied to a multitude of different conditions, both medical and cosmetic. The main advantage is that there is no surgery and no “down-time”. You may return to your daily routine immediately.

How to do

It involves a series of micro-injections with a unique pharmaceutic formulations injected into the mesoderm of the skin. Mesotherapy allows the true restructuring of the skin tissue since the formulation has been fully designed to favour the different biological reactions necessary for the maintenance of the skin—

n Acting on the flexibility of the skin by regulating the growth of epidermal cells.
n It maintains the integrity of tissue by fighting the formation of toxic peroxides.
n It helps stimulate the synthesis of collagen and inhibit the synthesis of excess melanin.
n It also plays a major role in the regulation of the micro-circulation.

Transcutaneous supplements of nucleic acids injected via this technique stimulate the synthesis of the noble proteins of the dermis and thereby restructure the entire tissue. Mesotherapy is usually performed in an initial series of 2-4 treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart. The effects of the treatment are cumulative. Your body will slowly develop collagen and elastin over time. The treatment is a bio revitalizing treatment. By injecting hyaluronic acid and other nutrients into the dermis, one will notice improvement in the tone, hydration and texture of skin.

Finding a new flora
Satish Narula

Strange is the world of plants. We think we have seen all sorts of plants but every now and then we see something new and think that this is the mother of all beautiful flora that exists, and we declare it as the ultimate. But then we find another.

The excitement in horticulture, in fact, comes from the introduction of new flora as adding new features is vital for a good landscape. Such introductions give the garden and landscaping dynamism. We have tried from time to time to introduce you to something new. This time it’s a shrub, the escelpias and a shade climber, a variegated Monstera. The former is almost a new introduction and the latter is an improvement on the already existing Mostera deliciosa, the common and popular shade-loving climber.

The plants like Asclepias, Poinsittea etc may be called emphasis plants in the garden as these are such plants that will attract the attention of any visitor due to their attractive and amazing display. From a distance, an Asclepia shrub may look like a Kaner shrub but due to the unusual balloon like ‘fruits’ they are different. The ‘balloons’ are very light and full of air. The structure though plump is air-tight and bears a small stalk within, on which rest the seeds. The tennis ball like light green fruits are very attractive and deceptive at the same time due to otherwise soft spines. The plant when injured oozes out milk, the latex. The plant can be multiplied by cuttings and also with the wind dispersal of seed.

Another introduction is Monstera deliciosa variegata. Its variegation is amazing and sparkling white. The whole of the leaf may be white or it may be in patterns. Sometimes on the same plant exactly half of the leaf is white and half of it is deep green. Initially, the leaf is heart- shaped and gets its ‘cuts’ as it matures. The plant is hardy and can be easily grown in the home garden in pots. It can easily be multiplied by way of cuttings with four to five sections. It may be laid horizontally or planted vertically in pots in pure sand. As it gets roots it is transplanted. The sand at the time of propagation should be kept moist.

Delhi Safari, India’s first stereoscopic film, aims at spreading a strong environmental message
Vasudha Gupta

Rashmi Ahad
Rashmi Ahad

The teaser of the animation film opens on a happy note featuring a lioness and her cub in the jungle. Between the feline and kids’ happy moments, it’s not all sugar and spice. After all, we have long graduated from the Bambi days. An uprooted tree and all hell breaks lose!

Next, a fluffy green parrot breaks into a song and we know that the green fuzz ball will be the hero of the film. Between the sound glitches and sub-standard voiceover, we manage to figure that the movie comes from Nikhil Advani’s stable. The teaser of Delhi Safari, a 3D Stereoscopic film, comes to Chandigarh with the agenda of bringing the city face-to-face with the high points of Krayon animation.

The upcoming bilingual film has voices of Akshay Khanna, Sunil Shetty, Boman Irani and Urmila Matondkar. The concept of the film, which by all means beats the regular run-of-the mill animation films, revolves around the growing problem of deforestation and the expanding concrete jungle in India. The music for the animation comes from the house of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and grips the audience, consisting mostly of a probable student bracket for the animation institute.

Made with a mind-boggling budget of Rs 28 crore, the animation should ideally be at par with a regular, well-scripted Bollywood masala flick. Minutes into the teaser, the plot comes out and without seeing the end is predictable.

“We want the story to have a strong global message,” shares Rashmi Ahad, director media and public relation, representative from Krayon pictures. The film is ready for screening at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Ranveer Singh
Making waves: Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh has made his mark in Bollywood. He has won rave reviews for his debut film, Band Baaja Baaraat because he was utterly fantastic and confident in the film. He has a three-film deal with Yash Raj Films. Here he shares some acting tips and his experiences on how he made it here without any film background. The guy has his hands full with Lootera and a film opposite Kareena, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

1I've wanted to be an actor since I was a child. Throughout my school years I used to participate in debates, plays etc. I was never very good at academics or sport. But what I used to excel in was cultural activities, creative stuff, dancing. When I won, I loved it! I always knew I was inclined towards entertainment.

2I am a nervous kind of guy! But I never allow my nerves to be detrimental to my performance. I've learnt how to channel them and make them a positive energy. I rehearse my scenes tremendously.

3I am not trained in dancing but I enjoy it. I did not dance very well at my audition. The songs I chose were Chhaiya Chhaiya and My Name is Lakhan. They told me that I had the moves but no rhythm. Then I met Vaibhavi ma'am and she changed it all. She made me dance and then made moves according to what I can naturally do. That's why I get away with it! She made me attend dance classes. Finally we rehearsed before the shoot. The songs are so much fun, I never felt like I was going to work. If you choose a job you love, you will never feel like you're going to work.

4Acting was my first passion and creative writing was my second passion. I do not come from a film family so I pursued my second passion. I was working in America and went for an amateur acting course. I went on stage and performed. I came back to my seat, and said: This is what I love. This is what I'm best at. So I took theatre as a minor and did well which was very encouraging. When I came to Mumbai I became an assistant director. It was a good decision because I got a live experience.

5 It is important to network a little with people in the industry, which is what I did for a few years… I got my foot in there. Then I said to myself, let's get more acting specific and I did theatre. I wanted to act only in mainstream Hindi movies. I wanted to keep my face fresh. I made it a point not to give my face away. When I went to meet directors, producers etc. they felt it was an advantage because I was a blank slate. I had never been seen on any screen before.

I went through the conventional way, got my pictures clicked, went to casting agents, anyone who was willing to see my pictures. I started ambushing people and that went on for good 3 and half years. One day I got a call, saying it's a Yashraj role, lead role, so I went and gave it my best shot. And I crossed many stages. Then finally I met Maneesh, the director of Band Baaja Baaraat again on the 19th of November in 2009.

Anurag Kashyap: I don't need a star

Anurag Kashyap has been making some excellent and edgy films without following Bollywood's money-making filmi diktats. His latest gangster flick Gangs of Wasseypur that will be released in two parts, has been making waves at many international festivals, including Cannes.

Kashyap has spent many years trying to get stars like Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan to act in his films, but it seems that he has had enough of endless waiting for them to read his scripts.

However, the Dev D director feels that he can make the kind of films that he likes without any backing from a studio or a star.

In fact, at a recent interview he said, "Go to like-minded people who want this kind of cinema, to give you money, so that you can keep making this kind of cinema. I don't need a studio, I don't need a star." He might not sound very humble, but the fact remains that Kashyap is perhaps the only filmmaker in Bollywood who has consistently represented Indian cinema at innumerable international film festivals.

Sonam Kapoor
Miss-quoted: Sonam Kapoor

The stylish Sonam Kapoor seems to be walking around with a chip on her shoulder these days. The media caught the actress at a recent promotional event and the chirpy actress interestingly spoke her heart out.

Amidst her conversation, she blurted out how she was not too fond of the media. In fact, when they misquote her she doesn't let them get away and instead gives them a piece of her mind! When Sonam realised that the statement could have invited serious trouble, she sweetly added that media persons were also her good friends and it is because of them that she is well known and popular today! I am a relationship girl: Charlize Theron

Actress Charlize Theron says she likes being in a relationship. The 36-year-old screen beauty, who has been single since her nine-year romance with Stuart Townsend ended in 2010, said she likes having a man in her life, reported a publication.

"I'm always open to a relationship, but I'm not putting those feelers out there now. I'm not unhappy with it, but I'm not like, 'Oh, this is so much better than when I was in a relationship.' I am a relationship girl. That's kind of just how I'm made.

"There's definitely something in the nature of a man and a woman that makes (relationships) challenging, but it was never a huge problem for me. I don't live my life in a way that feels big. When you're in my life, it's actually very contained," she said. —PTI

I am ready to don a bikini: Parineeti Chopra

Newbie actress Parineeti Chopra, who is basking in the glory of her latest film Ishaqzaade, says she is ready to don a bikini. Parineeti, 24, started her career with Ladies vs Ricky Bahl in 2011 and said she has set no limitations for herself as an actress and will also do intimate scenes if the script demands.

"I have no limitations and that is because I believe in myself. When you finish reading a script and you still remember about that one kissing scene and think that the script is good... But just because it has a kissing scene, hence you will not do it. This means that with what intention the writer must have wrote that scene, you have not understood it," Parneeti said. Even in Ishaqzaade, there are few intimate scenes between her and co-star Arjun Kapoor.

"When I was reading this Ishaqzaade script, I did not think of love making or a kissing scene. The placement of the scene in the movie is right and it is not that it has been put for fun or for everyone to enjoy.

"If you like the script for what it is... if the intention of the writer is to have a lovemaking scene, or a kissing scene or bikini or dance or whatever, I will do it. I feel as an actor one must not have any inhibition," she said.

Bhairavi Raichura
Bhairavi Raichura

Subtle, brilliant, artistic, charming; talented yet low profile - actress Bhairavi Raichura, who made an impact with audiences in Sasuraal Genda Phool and Balika Vadhu, has now turned producer with Colors Chhal. Here’s a chat with the introvert, soft-spoken Bhairavi who likes her life to be uncomplicated and simple.

Why did you turn producer?

I have been an actor for 15 years and was looking to doing something more. Nandita Mehra, the director of Uttaran, has been a great friend. She handles the creative side while I look after the production.

Tell us about Chhal

Chhal is a social thriller with a slick, crisp look. We shot in locations like Mussoorie and Auli, which gives the show a fresh look. We want to break away from the clutter and establish ourselves as good producers.

What do you enjoy most about Sasuraal Genda Phool?

The off-screen fun; we have had several special moments while shooting. We are all like a family so we make fun of each other, play pranks, etc. There are no egos or tantrums. The cast, the script, the dialogues and the director Rakesh are all in tandem. And I guess because we do so much masti on the sets, the chemistry flows on to the screen too.

You make playing Rajni bhabhi seem so easy. How?

Rajni is a very simple person. One can relate to her. She is set in her life after 7-8 years of marriage; a responsible bahu who has retained her child-like qualities. It is wonderful playing the character of Rajni bhabhi, which has various shades.

You seem to prefer being low profile.

Yes. I enjoy being with my friends and family, going out with them and spending time. I don’t like socialising for the heck of it or being in the news. — HRM

Mithun’s new muse!

It seems Mithunda has found new love …and he declared it on national television! Recently during the shoot for Zee TV’s DID L’il Masters, Dada was taken by one of the lovely contestants on the show and did not waste time in introducing his new found girlfriend Shalini to the world! Apparently, Mithunda was so charmed by the l’il girl and her effervescent personality as well as dance that it was love at first sight. A visibly glum Geeta, of course, could not help but express her disappointment in dada as she heard him make his declaration. “Ab aapko nayi girlfriend mil gayi hai toh aap humme toh bhool gaye ho…” said Geeta, voicing her disapproval. The entire nation is aware of Mithunda’s muse for over five years. For some time now he has been declaring his unending love for Geeta Kapur on national television, as they have been a part of Zee TV’s Dance India Dance. Geeta too basked in the spotlight of Dada’s attention for as long as anyone can remember. But now, with this new development, things might be about to change. Or will they?

The dancing diva

Waheeda Rehman
Waheeda Rehman

Not many know that the beautiful Waheeda Rehman is also a kathak dancer. And when her dance teacher, Jaya tai, made it to the sets of the show, our host Raveena did not miss an opportunity to make the guru-shishya flaunt a few dance steps for all their fans. Even at a ripe age, Jaya tai began with a few kathak steps, which Waheeda graciously followed. This is not all! Once this small performance was done, the crew started playing the popular song Sasural Genda Phool.

Waheeda being the true lover of dance, once again started moving to the tunes of the song and to everyone’s surprise was joined by the gorgeous Asha Parekh! Eventually, even Raveena joined them and all three of them danced together. Now this is what we call re-creating the old Bollywwod charm on the sets of NDTV’s Issi Ka Naam Zindagi. Tune in to this special final episode of Issi Ka Naam Zindagi on NDTV India on May 19 at 10 pm with Raveena Tandon, Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parekh, Ranjeet and Kader Khan.
