A gift called mom
On this Mother's Day, here are a few celebrities from the region sharing how their mothers have been part of their respective success stories
Sabia Talwar

No gift for your mother can ever equal her gift to you - your life. A mother can never be compared to anyone in the whole world, as she surpasses the essence of each and every relation without caring for anything in return. This Mother's Day, we ask some celebrities from the region on the role their mothers played in their success.

She believes in me
Honey Singh

Yo Yo Honey Singh, who is definitely the best rapper in the Punjabi music industry and has proved that even Punjabi singers can demand a good price in Bollywood, says whatever he has become is just because his mother was always his pillar of strength. Says Honey, "My mother is the same for me and I'm the same for her, so fame does not matter at all. Yes, I will always remember my mother for the fact that when everyone was against my singing career, she was the only one who supported me." He says the only thing that he can give in return to the lady is to praise her saag and rajma chawal!

I'm just like her
Ayushmann Khurrana

VJ-turned-actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who has lately tasted success with Vicky Donor, says that his mother has contributed a lot to what he is today. Says Ayushmann, "To start with, I have my mom's dimples; then I have a good command over Hindi language and last but not the least, the quality of being patient." We wonder what Ayushmann would like to gift his mother this Mother's Day! "My mother is a very simple lady, so materialistic things don't matter much to her; she just wants to see me happy," adds Ayushmann. So the star, who is busy shooting in Mumbai, plans to pay a visit every month to Chandigarh just to meet his family.

Fountainhead of inspiration
Sargun Mehta

Sargun Mehta, better known as Phulwa from the Colors serial, goes back in time and says when she decided to move to Mumbai, her mother did not question her at all. Says Sargun, "If my mother had not shown faith in me and my talent, I would never have been in Mumbai." Even after Sargun's first show ended and she had to struggle a lot for her second, it was her mother who constantly encouraged her. What special gift will she like to give her mom? "I can give materialistic things to her any day and for any occasion, but for this Mother's Day I feel that a trip exclusively with my mom, where we can share all that we have missed in these seven years while I was in Mumbai, will be worthwhile."

Her faith is lasting
Yami Gautam

Actress Yami Gautam of Vicky Donor fame says that her mother had absolute faith in her decision to shift to Mumbai and even encouraged her to do the same. Says Yami, "My mother is god for me and I can never compensate whatever she has done for me all my life. And what's the plan for Mother's Day? "I speak to her at least twice a day, and the one and only gift I can giver her is keep her faith in me intact," adds Yami.

A gift she doesn’t accept
Mahie Gill

Actress Mahie Gill, who has shot to fame with her bold performances in bollywood movies, says that her mother always encouraged her to act and join theatre. Any special gift that she has given to her mother? "My mother does not take a single penny from me, as she feels parents should give to children and not vice-versa. I have tried giving her good branded bags and one thing I would love to gift her is a holiday from my side, where she travels the world with me," adds Mahie.

To mum, with love
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

She is the motivation behind all those success stories and the inspiration to reach for the stars. And if you are the one who has yet not acknowledged your mum's efforts, it's time you celebrate Mother's Day. Indulge her, love her and gift her; for the day will not come for another year!

Cook it up

Your mother has cooked for you day-in and day-out, so this is your chance to show that you can cook too. And making it a wonderful experience is Nik Baking Cooking Institute, which celebrated Mother's Day with a two-day exclusive workshop. "From cakes to wraps to continental dishes, we taught people everything during the workshop," says Nikhil Mittal.

Good food guide

If cooking is not your forte, then don't worry as you can treat her to a special Mother's Day lunch. Hotel Icon in Sector 8 has Mongolian food to celebrate the day and that's not all, here you can also learn how to cook! "Since mothers are quite health-conscious these days, we will be presenting a healthy Mongolian fare to celebrate the day," says Neeta Sukhija from Hotel Icon.

Hair we go

Your mother sure needs some pampering. We suggest you take her to a spa or a saloon where she can relax. "We are offering a free hair-cut to the mother if a child is taking a hair-cut at our saloon," says Munish Bajaj from Tress Lounge. "Other than that, there would be some discounts on this special day on hair colouring and so on." Whether there is a discount or not, believe us and indulge your mother in some saloon therapy. She is sure to love it!

Pearl of an idea

Although your mother would be happy if you give a hand-made card to her on this special day or make a bouquet for her, gifting pearls is a wonderful idea! Not very expensive, you can buy her pearls starting at Rs 200. "Mothers have always made our days' special, so on this day we are offering discounts and free gifts on purchase of Rs 1,000 and above," says Takkar from Rani Pearls in Sector 19.

Beat upbeat
Folk singer and sarangi player Eddu Shariff says it is important to remain connected to our roots
Jasmine Singh

In far away countries like Canada, the US and Australia, when a dholi hits the dhol, the kind of energy that it creates is unbeatable. Back home, closer still in Punjab, the one time that we get to hear the beats is either on Lohri or Baisakhi or a sangeet function (if they are the traditional sorts) of a marriage.

For a change, this time it is going to be different for we will be hearing almost 200 dholis create magic with the instrument!

Prior to the event Dholicious 2012, Eddu Shariff, a folk singer and sarangi player talks about the lost heritage and the real culture. “Traditional instruments and music haven’t been lost completely; at the same time a good number of people don’t even know about it,” he says looking at his instrument that has been his accomplice for years now.

“It is important to remain connected to our roots and folk music is something that reminds us of our heritage. With Dholicious 2012, I can see some hope of a revival.”

Eddu Shariff would have been lost in the newness of the music trends had he not stuck to his passion. So, by performing at small functions he tried to keep the tradition alive. He is glad to talk about this phase of his life. “I have recorded many songs and videos with my team members, Sukhi Khan and Vicky Khan. Sada dil nahi lagda, Bairang chittiyan and the recent Zindagi de rang sajna in the Punjabi movie Tera mera ki rishta,” he says.

The folk singer and sarangi player understands the trends of today’s music industry. What he can’t decipher is how we can forget our tradition.

“We should pass on this legacy to our kids. My son sings very well and I am glad he understands the folk culture,” adds Eddu Sharif.

Magical notes

Dholicious 2012 is an endeavour to highlight folk culture of the country as well as the folk artistes. Shares Poonam Batth, director Wishing Tree, "We will only create a robotic generation if we don't tell our kids about the richness of our culture; with Dholicious 2012 we want to showcase what magic a dhol can create." Wishing Tree is also thinking of organising a world bhangra competition, Sufi music festival and many more events in the future in a bid to highlight our rich cultural heritage.

Doctor of creativity
Dr Shivani Garg has not only published a collection of poems but also showcased an array of paintings
Vasudha Gupta

It is not always that you tend to run into a doctor who does more than just her job. Considering the high that the MBBS profession gives you, there are several aspects of your creativity that are forgotten. Among the crowd of such well-educated individuals, Shivani Garg is a shining example of someone who has struck a balance between her artistic skills and MBBS course.

Already set to go to the US for her MD in internal medicine, the young doctor is also a writer and has compiled a book of poems only a year back. “Preparing for this course came with its own set of tribulations. It was then that I compiled my poems,” she shares with us. Exhibiting her 45 works at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10, she has brought out amazing pieces of art without any training in the field. “If you are trained, you are not an artist,” she smiles with oodles of confidence.

All of 24, she can put anyone in a tizzy with her meritorious talent. Taking us around the exhibit, she makes a halt in front of her favourite creation. Titled Unexpressed, she talks about what guided her work. “It is dedicated to the theme of the exhibition. We constantly put up a face in front of people and wear a mask. The painting depicts the endless flow of emotions in us,” she explains.

Another work Illusion shows an eye and water to showcase how no one can ever figure out what a woman is undergoing. “There are several positive and negative emotions, which cannot be deciphered,” her sister Mohita explains. A doctor will always aim to reach the sky. This has directed Shivani’s efforts to pursue her dream in oncology one day. A Bit More High Towards....The Sky shows how the tree, no matter how deeply grounded, is constantly moving towards the sky. “It depicts expectations,” she explains. Impressions of Time is another work, which shows a Christian bride in the present, all set to peep into her future, holding her past close to her heart. “She has a bright future, but her journey to that light is all alone,” Shivani elaborates.

Made in coffee, her next favourite is Bonded Freedom. It shows the mind of a woman who is bound by culture, traditions and values.

A dash of colour in the general perception that doctors are practical and hardcore professionals; here is a charming young girl with a beautiful soul!

Route to roots
Canada-based poet Gurdev Chauhan revisits his native village in his poems

It’s not for the first time that the beauty of village life or the loss of it has turned an author or a poet out of Indian Diaspora. But in the Canada-based Gurdev Chauhan’s case, as many as 90 poems wasn’t a result of anything sudden, even though the name of his fifth book on poetry Aksmaat, negates that.

“When I moved to Canada in 2006, I started editing a lot of papers. I hadn’t written for a while due to lack of time. That’s the period when all these poetry happened.”

The poems look back feelingly to the village that now no more exists in its old time glory. Most of the poems also lament the growing insensitivity of the people towards fellow beings, quite a few bemoan the loss of faith in the word. There’s Meri Bicycle, Chakwan Chullah, Cheech Vahuty, Battkhan, Chidi…as assortment of subjects, inspirations. But many lament the time we’ve lost and the territories we’ve left. “When an Indian travels abroad, it’s not the bag as much as it is about the baggage. The baggage that consists of his feelings, his identity and aspirations.”

Among the previous books, there’s one largely dedicated to character sketches. Yet another Aas Paas is a critical and creative non-fiction. “It talks about the journey of a man, common life, fear and such subjects.”

Back in Canada, just as here, singers are known and looked up to more than writers. Nevertheless, the amount of translation work happening there is way more than what happens in the literary scene of India. “I feel blessed to be able to write poetry. You feel a lot, there are so many amorous thoughts that have no shape, with prose and poetry it all falls into place,”

Among other things, he’s also publishing, Sotuh Asian Ensemble, a Canadian Quarterly of Arts, Literature and Culture. Left hanging is his one work of humour. “I was attempting humour a little back in this novel called Masaledar Canada. That work is still incomplete because I left it midway. I’m looking forward to completing it now,” he signs off. —TNS

Voice of conviction
When you are in love with your profession, the struggle turns into a beautiful learning experience, says singer Sukhwinder Singh, proud of himself in a very innocent kind of way
Mona

Very busy with 'less' is Sukhwinder Singh. The highly successful singer who has given hits like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Chak De and Jai Ho (that got an Academy Award and a Grammy) Sukhwinder is in his own zone.

In Chandigarh, to be part of the closing ceremony of the Gully Cricket organised by Chandigarh police and the administration, Sukhwinder stands firm on his convictions, not bothered about what people think or say about him. His clothes receive amused looks, English garners some smirks, but does it really matter if one's dressing or English is perfect when you have a global fan following!

He knows his music and proudly claims that he is successful right from his childhood because God has gifted him with a voice. Standing firm on this conviction, he is busy making music and more recently a film. Another singer-turned-actor phenomenon? "Neither I am an actor nor do I know acting. I did the film because while writing songs for it, the director Jagbir Dahiya convinced me to do the role," he says.

Movie Khudi Ko Kar Bulund Itna addresses the theme close to his heart - to live by the religion of 'humanity'. "If something bothers you, words are the best weapons of change," says Sukhwinder.

The movie has it all, dreams, struggle and fight sequences, for which the singer gained weight as well as bulk but it is in no way an attempt to be a 'hero'. "Sukhwinder is already a star," he clears.

His music has been a hit, why don't we see his work more often? "I take time, as music is my passion. I sing only when I really feel for something," says Sukhwinder. Not bothered about awards that have landed his way, he says "My reward is appreciation from the audience. Jai ho is no milestone, but love of the people is."

Making music for yoga is the latest that comes from his stable. "Yoga has brought a lot of positive changes in my life, so I wanted to give something back. Music is ready and will be released in a month or two," says Sukhwinder, a rather new practitioner of Yoga.

This singer wants to do his bit for the society and sports is close to his heart. In 2006, he gave a song for the cause of hockey in Chak De India (that year he also gave another hit Dard-e-Disco). There are three more sports apart from hockey — kabaddi, wrestling and athletics —that he wants to promote. "I came to Bhatinda with SRK for we cared for kabaddi. I am ready to do as many shows as it takes, if I can get funds for these sports."

In fact, love for sports made him approach authorities of Gully Cricket. "It's remarkable that thousands of youngsters became part of this tournament that touched social issues plaguing our country."

Not bothered about the future, Sukhwinder intends to carry on his passion and profession —music. "God will take care of the rest," he says with an air of abandon.

Aamir's fan

“Aamir aisi bala hai jo na koi raz kholta hai na kholne deta hai,"says Sukhwinder Singh when quizzed on his association with the show Satyamev Jayate. "It's a significant issue that I have worked on with Aamir. I can't say much but after this particular episode is aired, one would truly value water. All in awe of Aamir's working style, he says, "There is no over-excitement, no diplomacy, no confusion; Aamir is a clear and simple person. He is content on the most relevant issues related to our life. I totally appreciate his work and consider myself fortunate to be part of it!"

In the lanes of telly town
Television actor Barun Sobti says it is not easy to make a name in the television industry...
Sabia Talwar

The beginning

I belong to Delhi and I'm a Punjabi khatri. I used to work at Jindal Telecom Company in Delhi; however, I always wanted to act. With no formal training in acting, I just got my profile pictures done in Delhi and then got selected for the Star Plus' serial Shraddha. From there on, I had to shift my base from Delhi to Mumbai.

Natural course

Acting has come naturally to me. The only training in acting I did was when I used to throw tantrums in front of my parents. The rest of the talent has come with time and experience, and through the confidence I have gained to face the camera. Also, I have grown up watching movies so I always like the acting part.

Female fans

I'm married to my childhood sweetheart since 2010 and we have always been together, so she hardly minds the female fan-following. Very less people have the chance to have people around who think good about you and your success. Being an ordinary guy, I feel overwhelmed with my female fans around me.

Reel connection

Presently, I'm playing the role of Arnav Singh Raizada for Iss Pyaar Ko Main Kya Naam Doon. He is an arrogant and heartless business tycoon; but in reality I don't yell mindlessly at people when I'm angry. On the contrary, when I played Shravan in Sony TV's serial Baat Hamaari Pakki Hai the character was just like me in real life.

Ad-mad world

My first advertisement was for Ford Figo while I was doing Shraddha and I auditioned for it. I have also done advertisements for Reliance Big TV, Dulux Paints and Hero Honda Passion Pro. The fact is that television, commercials and movies are three different industries; until and unless you are a celebrity, you don't get offers to feature in advertisements.

Host and dost

I recently hosted the Star Parivaar Awards and it was some fun. I also performed on stage and loved performing salsa. Rest my link-up with my co-actor Saanya Irani is not true as we are just good friends. I'm shocked that people talk even if there is nothing going on.

Youth forum

There is no doubt that the television industry provides a big opportunity, but it is a very different business altogether where you have to slog to make a mark. I work twelve hours a day and thirty days a month; it's not easy. So I would like to suggest to the youngsters out there that if they are really keen on acting, they must judge their ability to work hard and only then go for the television industry.

Weight watch
Swapana Singla
Any time, any place

If you want to lose weight, hitting the gym is not only the way out. Many a time we are so busy with our-day-to day work and schedule, we don’t get time to work out. A day off at the gym and then trying to work out the next day is like getting up early on Monday morning for work.

Check out some work out tips even while sitting, like on the computer, watching TV or even when just waiting for your meal. The only thing you need is a chair. The chair needs to have a comfortable cushion for your hips with straight back rest; much like your dinning chair and arm rest can be optional.

Cycling

Sit straight on the chair, chest flared and back erect.

Start cycling without your foot or heel touching the ground.

Hand can be either rested below you buttocks (hips), or the arm can be rested on the arm rest or on the table top.

Do it fast for one minute, take a break and repeat.

Benefits: Toning of thigh muscles, lower abdominal muscles (below your umbilicus)

Leg raises

Sit straight on the chair, with your hands bellow the hip.

Extend your leg at the knee-joint, raise your leg slowly from ground level till you feel the crunch in your stomach.

Without your heel or foot touching the ground, bring back your leg down and note your leg does not fold or bend at the knee joint.

Do three sets of 10-15 counts each.

Benefits: Great to tone your lower abdominal muscles and back muscles.

Heel tap and toe tap

Sit straight on the chair with arms resting on the table or handle of the chair.

The knee bend and the foot resting flat on the floor.

Extend your knee and bring back to the original position one by one, doing the heel tap 20 counts and then the toe tap 20 counts. It feels like a dance step.

Benefits: It is the best exercise to delay the knee arthritis or knee pain, toe tap strengthens your leg muscles.

Twister

Sit straight, twist your upper body to the right and left at the waist.

* Turn your head as well as your arm to look behind to get that extra stretch.

* While twisting, pause when you look to the right and then to the left.

* Try to do at least 25-30 counts.

Benefits: Toning of your waist muscles for a curvy look and a thin waist.

Dress as you please!

Every person has a sense of style. Yet there are only a few who’d attract the second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be the tousled hair, it could be the torn jeans. Our this week’s face in the crowd, Kamal, a graduate in fashion designing, likes to dress up as he feels like.

Your sense of style is…

Peppy. It is very simple but stylish. You do not need to add a lot of things in your closet for style statement. You just have to add a twist to your classic style …

Latest addition in the wardrobe…

There are so many… I bought a linen trouser, three pairs of shoes, one pair of glares, a t-shirt and a perfume…

Brand freak or street smart?

It depends upon what I’m buying from where. I totally believe in mix and match.

Choose one—sporty, glamorous or chic

Glamorous, any day! Also because of the industry I’m in.

Your style icon …

Nobody as such. I believe in myself. But I like Brenden Kennedy, an American fashion stylist. He understands preppy style so well…whereever he goes, he goes with style.

Who’s the worst dressed celebrity around?

Again there are so many. Ajay Devgn, Govinda and sometimes Salman Khan too. They are yet to learn the art of stylising themselves.

One fashion trend you don’t understand…

Animal prints during day time. Pairing sports shoes with denims.

Your take on accessories…

Accessories mean just two things. A pair of sunglasses and a cell phone.

One thing that boosts your confidence…

When I dress up nicely. I feel very confident about myself.

You would love to be dressed up by….

Ralph Lauren. Though that in itself is obvious but if asked to spell out the reason, then my answer is because his style is unique.

Star track
Koena ready to go bold

Dusky beauty Koena Mitra reveals that Hollywood projects interest her more than Bollywood films. The actress is busy filming Michael Hershel’s, The Story of Naomi.

Commenting on her character and career in Hollywood, she said, “Nothing came easily to me. For The Story of Naomi I gave at least ten auditions before they called me. I don’t find anything wrong with sex scenes, going nude or doing item numbers if the script demands.”

Koena plays the character of a wife involved in an extramarital affair.

Hollywood calling: Koena Mitra

Shahid’s three different kahaani...

Shahid Kapur plays three different characters in Teri Meri Kahaani and the film spans three different decades.  The first part is in 1910 which is the pre-Independence era and Shahid plays a Muslim character called Javed who falls in love with a Punjabi girl Aradhana.  Shahid says, “Unlike my other characters in films Javed’s character is the worst and the most badly behaved flirtatious character. And this is the most exciting character of my career.”

Shahid says that today in 2012 society has opened up and things are a lot easier. But what was more interesting was to find that there were such interesting characters during that era too.

Then Kunal told me about Govind’s character from the 60’s who is from Mumbai   which was Bombay then. “The period was interesting and exciting. I have seen films with Greek lighting. People were very cool right from the fashion point of view or from the music point of view. Govind is a normal guy who is a struggling musician and comes to Bombay.  He meets Rukhsar (Priyanka) who is a big star by then. They meet for the first time and the movie shows how they fall in love.  Govind lives in a chawl and is in love with this big star. This concept was interesting.”

Shahid goes on to add, “The third portion is about a campus romance between me and Priyanka in 2012. It’s about relationships between a boy and girl of today.  When you get out of one relationship and suddenly meet someone, you are not sure you like him or not. Things are very unclear.  Yet you have to behave normally which is what I really like in contemporary eras. So these are the three different eras and three different types of characters.  When all this is put in an entertaining space it becomes not too serious or melodramatic. You have just one story in three eras and three entertaining love stories. I thought that viewers would find it exciting.”

A state called Bihar

This year Bihar completes 100 years of its existence. Bihar was created on March 22, 1912.

As a tribute to Bihar, Bollywood is gifting the state with something very special. Jiya ho Bihar ke lala, Jiye tu hazaar Saal – is a song from Gangs of Wasseypur. Anurag Kashyap’s first ever commercial film!

The song is a tribute to Bihar for completing 100 years and wishing it 1000 more years to live.

Anurag Kashyap, we heard had personally gone to Patna recently to wish the state luck. Another important thing is that the song is sung by Manoj Tiwari, who himself is a very big name in Bihar.

The film, Gangs of Wasseypur is about the coal mafia in Dhanbad and the star cast includes Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Syed Zeeshan Quadri and Richa Chadda. The film will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight section.

Weight does not matter

Sonakshi Sinha has no problems with people who criticise her for doing de-glam roles and for her weight. She is comfortable in her space and the movies she is doing.

Rohit’s new venture

Rohit Shetty is directing a film for Karan Johar.
For the first time, Karan does not feel like directing and is keener on producing. He has enjoyed Rohit’s films and knows they draw in audiences and money. Rohit is more than happy with the collaboration. The film just might star both Ajay Devgn and SRK!

Habib talks of his ‘love legend’

Habib Faisal is the National Award winning director of Do Dooni Chaar. He has written scripts and/or dialogues for Yash Raj Films such as Ta Ra Rum Pum, Salaam Namaste, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Band Baaja Baaraat, and Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl. Ishaqzaade is his first directorial venture for Yash Raj Films. Habib has travelled extensively around the country as a cameraman for news channels and also worked in theatre. Through a series of events, he became a scriptwriter for YRF. He draws inspiration from people and places to write his films. The intelligent and down-to-earth director talks about Ishaqzaade and the other films he has worked on.

Love that was!

This is a love story set in a fictitious small town in the age of internet, electricity, cable, and mobiles. The people who live in small towns now no longer want to come to big cities because they have better infrastructure and decent job opportunities. Our characters fight for their love and we don’t see this kind of love today, we have usually seen them in “legends” (fasaane and afsaane).

On Parineeti Chopra

She is a natural actress and she goes by her instincts. I hope she continues to do that. She has a fire in her and she loves acting. She never thinks of doing a scene from the point of view that Rani Mukerji would do it or her cousin Priyanka Chopra would do it.

Happy with Arjun

We worked with him for more than 40 days to get into the skin of his character and he has done a great job. He does not seem like a newcomer. I am very happy with my cast and I hope the audience thinks the same.

Independent charge

Aditya Chopra is a very supportive producer and he lets you do what you want. He gives you a free reign. No director likes to be dominated by the producer. If that was the case, I would not have made Ishaqzaade or written films for YRF.

Writing and casting

Do Dooni Chaar drew inspiration from my own life. My father was an educationist so Mr Duggal (the character played by Rishi Kapoor) was also a teacher. Then there was a scene where he is trapped by the media. I drew this from my days as a cameraman.  My parents became the template for the Duggals. Interestingly, Ricky Thukral’s character from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom became the template for Bittoo Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat. JBJ did not work but thankfully people loved Bittoo Sharma and Band Baaja Baaraat. I hate writing dialogues though I have done that for many films. I like writing scripts and screenplays. I don’t think of actors while writing films. I draw from the people and places I know and from my own experiences and after that the casting is done. I definitely want to make a satire later on.

Talaash on hold

Aamir Khan has delayed the release of Talaash but he is very happy with the end result. He has said that he will not change the ending of the movie. There were rumours because it is apparently similar to Kahaani.

Sugar-coated Rakhi

Rakhi Sawant has grown fond of cricket starlet Nupur Mehta. She met her recently and said she felt that she had a bright future and that she was intelligent. She was having lunch and even offered her. Who would have thought Rakhi could be so accommodating?

All for Heroine

The shooting of Heroine has been taking a toll on Kareena Kapoor because the scenes are emotional and she has to shout and cry a lot. She is doing double shifts for the movie and is exhausted. She will join Saif in Greece next month and visit him every fifteen days as he shoots for Race 2.

Tamasha of dieting
Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar advises people to start eating

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar’s second book, Women and The Weight Loss Tamasha has been flying off the shelves like hot cakes, even more than a year after its launch. The Kapoor sisters (Kareena and Karisma) swear by her! She talks about the title, the inspiration, food fundas, and more.

1 What is wrong with the way people eat today?

I want to tell people to eat, please! People fear food and that is wrong. They even fear dal-chawal. We are not supposed to be scared of food. I have noticed that women are afraid of eating carbohydrates if they are dieting. To dispel this myth, I have included a box called “My name is Carb and I am not fattening.”

2 You have written about a woman’s relationship with herself. Please elaborate.

The issue that most women have today is that they do not think they are worthy enough to eat. The relationship that most women share with themselves is very poor. They always put themselves last and this has been going on for generations. We have seen that if there is left-over food, the Mother will eat it as she prepared fresh food for her family, she will always eat last, after everybody has finished, and so on. That has to change. Women do not eat or cook themselves if they are alone and that is not right. This has become so common that we do not even notice it anymore. It has to change.

3 What would you advice aspiring nutritionists?

Stay simple and logical with food. Do not follow fads. We must shift the focus from losing weight to fulfilling our nutritional needs.

4 How did the title come about?

I was at Kareena and Saif’s place and I told them about my idea for a new book. They were very excited and encouraged me to write it. Saif said that he had noticed how people behave at pool sides of hotels. No matter how out of shape the men are, they will wear their boxers or swimming trunks and not be bothered about it. The women, on the other hand, are very conscious of their figures. No matter what their fitness level is, they will wear salwar-kameezes even in the swimming pool. So he said it was a big tamasha and that stuck with the title.

5 Do you think you have changed the way people perceive fitness and food?

I cannot be delusional and take credit for that. I think my books have clicked because they explain something we inherently know and believe. The food fundas make logical sense and are realistic and easy to follow. There is no restriction and people are allowed to eat everything that they please but in moderation.

Getting high on promotions

Parineeti Chopra known as Dimple Chadha from Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl swept 12 awards last year as a debutante. Her performance was loved by everyone in Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl. Parineeti never got a chance to promote the film or even see herself on hoardings during the promotions of her last film. Apparently she was abroad and missed all of it.

This time for her film Ishaqzaade Parineeti made sure she is not going anywhere and dedicated all her time for promoting the film. In fact she was so very excited to see herself on hoardings all over the city. She was overwhelmed with people reacting to her interviews and fans clicking pictures with her wherever she went. She totally loved all the promotions and the attention she got during her city tours while she was promoting the film. As she missed all of that during her last film Parineeti gave it all this time for her film Ishaqzaade.

For the love of mom
On the occasion of Mother’s Day let’s see what our telly celebs have to say about their moms...

Sparsh Kanchandani

My mom is everything to me. She is my teacher, best friend, doctor and drives me around the town too. She always accompanies me on the sets and takes care of me. She loves me a lot and at the same time shouts at me when I do something wrong. On this Mother’s Day I am planning to throw a surprise party for her.

Eva Grover

For me my mother is my world. She is a single mother. At the age of nine, I lost my father and my mom has been a constant support since then. I know that she will be with me till my last breath. Whatever I am today, I owe it to my mother.

Pawan Shankar

Mother’s love is supreme among all the other forms of love. It is based on three pillars sacrifice, sacrifice and sacrifice.

Rupali Ganguly

My mother is the most important person not only for me but for everyone. If there is any good in me it’s all because of my mother and all bad is mine. I am very attached to my parents. My mother has always supported me for my choice of education and acting. She is more than perfect. One can’t describe motherhood, like you can’t describe what is beautiful. Even I also want to feel the same emotions what my mother felt. I truly wish to be with her alawys.

Ravi Dubey

I have managed to keep my mom smiling but there is still one thing that I want to do for my mother. I want to see my mom sitting in the backseat of a luxurious car that I own. That would be the ultimate gift for her. Summarizing mother’s day in a line I would say; “My mom is a never ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune.” Here is to the mother who has survived my tempre tantrums in all seasons.

Shubh turn for Eijaz Khan

Buzz is that Eijaz Khan’s role on UTV produced show Shubh Vivah is soon going to take the centre stage. The character Amrith, portrayed by Eijaz has gone through a lot of twists and turns on the show in a very short span of time.

In the recent past we saw him getting married to Saroj (played by Neha Janpandit) and her discovering about his affair. The viewers have so far seen Eijaz predominantly playing a grey character who is not happy with his marriage with Saroj and constantly getting into fights. But there is soon going to be Shubh change on all this. As per sources, there is a surprise , which will change Eijaz’s character positively.

Gulki’s big plunge!

Gulki Joshi, the newbie on an upcoming primetime saga, Phir Subah Hogi, is making quite a splash! Literally!! Within a month of the commencement of the shoot, the girl has not only impressed the channel as well as the production house with her fine acting prowess, but also her willingness to do all the daredevil stunts by herself! While shooting for the first episode of the show in Wai (a quaint village near Mahabaleshwar), Gulki stunned everyone with her decision to do a staggering jump in the middle of a deep lake for a particular scene.
