GAME for it?
How do you judge a product's popularity? On Facebook? Or maybe how much it is getting talked about on Twitter? Well, if you look at the gaming world of today, there is only one judgement on how popular a game is —the number of online hits! Apparently, Angry Birds Space, released on March 22, has already had over 50 million downloads, throwing even the game-developer into a tizzy. We dig into what all makes for a hit game.
"The most important aspect that makes any game popular is that it should provide any gamer the freedom to do what he or she wants to do; things which are probably unimaginable in real life," says Shahbaz Sekhon, a 20-year-old avid gamer. For any person who has never been in a war zone, blowing up things surely is a high. "Yes, scripts are very important. The story has to make enough sense to attract a gamer," chips in Rohit Gupta, a 21-year-old gamer, currently training in Infosys. And it has been because of fans like Shahbaz and Rohit that already the next version of the game FIFA is being anxiously awaited! Vikhyat Mahajan, a 21-year-old mechanical engineer, has been breathing, eating and living football all his life, and is a real-life gaming addict. Being a dedicated FIFA fan, the lad has all the editions and regularly updates them. "For me, getting hooked to a FIFA game is a matter of relieving stress," he shares with us. But yes, it also happens to be an escape mechanism from his point of view. "Gaming is still a time-pass for several people, but any real sports enthusiast will always want to test his skills in the field," he says. Apart from new games coming in every now and then, the industry is not devoid of problems. "In the Indian market, the bandwidth and the PCs are still far behind compared to what exists in the international gaming world," says Rohit. Apart from that, facilities put out for gamers do not tend to attract them much. "There are no real gaming centres or incentives given out to gaming professionals," shares Vikhayat. After all, which father will take pride in calling his son a gamer when the doctors and engineers flash better in one's resume!
"Yes, parents will never encourage it," says Shahbaz, who was once responsible for organising the most talked about LAN party in Chandigarh. "Gaming has totally developed as a major industry today. Movies are being made out of games and the vice-versa is also true," the final-year engineering student Sekhon, Grand Theft Auto fan, adds. Now, this is in no way pointing towards Ra.One, please! Of course, since Angry Birds played a major role in taking youngsters back to gaming; the latest Space version pivots around playing with the physics of planets. Making it scientific is only another way of adding creativity to gaming. Then there is the story of a young Abhijeet Madra, who has grown up on Counter Strike. It has been four years since he has not even looked at any other game except Counter Strike. And he has also played Nationals in gaming recently! "It was in 2011 and I took my own team. I believe gaming is equally popular in South-India," the 20-year-old computer engineer from Rayat Bahra Group of Institutions says. Oh, by the way, have you been waiting for what comes out after Max Payne? vasudha@tribunemail.com

Adventure in the spirit
The chances of taking the answer, "Flying", to the question, "What's keeping you busy these days?"…is negligible, especially in case of film stars. You know they have the most readymade answers to the question-shooting a film, promoting a film, releasing a film and at the most producing a film! While you expect one of these multiple choices to be ticked, Gul Panag comes up with the most unheard of answers, "Flying." Repeat, come again, pardon…but Gul is firm on what she says, "Flying. I have taken a month off to learn how to fly a small plane."
It's natural for anyone to place a connection between her new-found passion and her husband's profession, that of a pilot. Gul denies it, "No, that's something I always wanted to do. It's not fair to attribute to him what I am fond of doing." Taking into consideration her love for adventure; bikes (remember a marigold-decorated bike that made for her doli), there is no reason why we should not trust her. Nothing has changed post marriage for her. The juggling act between married and professional life is thus out of question. "Life has always been like this for me, I knew Rishi (her husband) ten years before we got married. Everything's on the same track." Even her career graph hasn't seen much of a variation for that matter. She still doesn't mind the slow and steady; pick and choose formula she uses to select films. Her film Fatso released on May 4 and she is pretty confident of how it will fare at the box office. "It has a fresh storyline; is homourous and I am sure people will love it." She plays the central character of Nandini in the film and is an object of affection among three men. "Cinema provides me a creative outlet and if a film ensures the same, it's a yes for me." She will also be seen in a Punajbi flick soon, which she adds will be the first-of-its-kind in the Punjabi film industry. "Directed by Jatinder Mauhar, it will be the most technically sound film of the region. Live sound system and red camera has been used to make the film. In fact, there is no comparison between this and other Punjabi films." At the same time, she feels Punjabi cinema has a long way to go. Now films might be keeping her busy, but she is open to the idea of foraying into television as well. (Why not? Aamir Khan's there too!) "I am game for a travel-based adventure show". Till then, she is happy flying!

Celeb point Divya Dutta I just read a co-actor saying, perceptions change here overnight. And there is no midway-it's extremes. Either they treat you like a nobody, who still has to prove himself, or they treat you like a king or queen! So the cynicism obviously comes in one's attitude as there's nothing reasonable or compassionate about the way you are being treated, it's either success oriented or need based. Anurag Kashyap was written off by everyone after his first film got stuck and banned for years. But after Dev D, he's considered the symbol of success. No one helped him in his tough phase, they ridiculed him. The same people now bow down to his terms! It's amusing to see people run down Vidya Balan for her dressing sense, calling her misfit, unfit and now after five super-hits, she's the diva! They now even add it with, "I always said she had it in her!" So many examples! Amitabh Bachchan is the biggest success story. Ten flops in the beginning of his career and people wrote him off as the long-legged struggler! And when Prakash Mehra showed faith in him in Zanzeer, the industry stopped looking at everyone else! They ran him down again during the Laal Badshaah days saying he was finished but he got back with Mohabattein and how, rediscovering himself with every role. But he doesn't take the praise too seriously. Or the people whose profession is to make a living of being close to the star! Because he knows and we all know, it's us today, but they will be standing with someone else tomorrow. They are not with you because you are a lovely human being who has been nice to them but because you are a star! So, failure and success both are a lonesome journey! You make your way, fight it out and get it but it's only you who is doing it and when you get success, it's only yours; like your failures! Others only laud you to pull you down! So, those who learn to walk the path alone, learn this lesson. For life would balance it out for life! As I shoot, the units applaud for a shot of mine. And a photographer comes to me and says, "I always knew you are such a natural actor, you will surely make it! I smiled and walked away, leaving him wondering... My path, lonely yes, but mine alone and I walk with a smile! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

The ‘in’ side Sukhmani
Have you ever walked into a house and felt everything was disjointed? This is precisely because there is no flow. While decorating a home, it is important to create a flow from one room to another. When your home connects well from one area to another it not only looks aesthetically pleasing but is comfortable to live in. You may, however, make an exception with children's rooms or a gaming zone in your house. Here are a few ways to create the right look for your home: n
Create a flow with style: One way to create a flow in your house is to stick to one style throughout the house. If you choose to go with the contemporary look, don't have the house broken up into modern and traditional zones. A mix of two styles is allowed but if you're not too sure how to do it, its best left to the professionals.
n Create a flow with colours: Flow can be created through the rooms by use of colour. You might paint all the walls the same colour, adding a few accent colours to provide some visual relief. Or, you could paint the rooms in different colors, as long as they relate in some way. For example, paint the living room in a golden hue and add some accessories in red. Connect to the living room by painting the dining room walls a corresponding red with accessories in gold. A third room like the kitchen could include accessories in both red and gold through the curtains, area rugs or dishes. Finally, be sure to repeat one or two neutral colours in all three rooms. Even if all rooms are painted in different colours, you can still create a flow by using a common element throughout all rooms such as trims or floorings. n Create a flow with materials: Floorings are the biggest area in a house and if you have the same type of floors, or if you keep the same type of woodwork in all rooms, it can easily tie up spaces in your home. If you have different floorings in different rooms, try using rugs that pull in similar colours to keep the connection. Repeating particular materials in all rooms also helps keep a flow throughout the house. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior & landscape designer) |

success mantra Mona
Khudi ko kar buland itna ki har taqdir se pehle khuda bande se puche bata teri raza kya hai ...is an oft-quoted, oft-listened line, but when it comes from Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, it makes true sense! From a young villager who would run miles without shoes on hot sand, cross two rivulets with books on his head to reach school to winning international competitions, his is a true success story. From an army jawan to a national athlete, his journey has been remarkable. A simple, humble soul whose story of grit has inspired a Bollywood biopic, he is as proud of his athletics innings, as being the sports director of Punjab and father of Jeev Milkha Singh, who has earned his fair share of success in golf. Close to 80 and very fit, Milkha Singh spends time playing golf or promoting sports. Many awards have come his way, including the prestigious Padma Shri to the very recent Lifestyle Achievement Award. This true achiever shares his success mantras. Work hard for success Mine is the story from zero to hero; if I hadn't worked hard I wouldn't have been here. When I got into athletics, I would practice so hard that at times I would fall down, go unconscious or even spit blood. My compatriots would fear for my life, but if I wanted to reach my goal, I had to give my sweat and blood. Dedication to your dream I didn't know about sports till I joined the army. Within 15-20 days of joining, in a cross country run I came in the top 10. My compatriots in the barracks, a hearty mix of Bihari, Bengali, South-Indian and Punjabi people, lifted me on their shoulders. That inspired me and after that I tried 100 metres, 400 and more on the guidance of my coach and superiors. I put myself wholeheartedly into sports and till now my life is dedicated to it. Will-power is important I was a refugee who had nothing to eat, army gave me a chance to dream and fulfill it. From knowing nothing about sports to leading in athletics, it's the sheer will-power that sustained me through the years. Its persistent efforts that pay; I would give 90 per cent to ones' efforts; the rest I agree is luck, which is not in our hands. Learning is important When I started competing at international events, I was way behind in terms of technique and training, but I had this burning desire to learn. During 1956 Olympic Games, I sat outside the room of the winner from the US till he showed up. Despite the language problem, I noted down the minutest detail of what he ate and how he trained. And, the results showed. Keep a clean record There is no shortcut to success, but the journey is long. It pains me no end to see youngsters taking to drugs. That brings shame to the family, the nation; and the medals are seized. Nothing is more important than honour for a sportsperson. mona@tribunemail.com |

GET PHYSICAL Anil Juneja
Utkatasana works on the three main aspects of fitness—strength, balance and stability. In Sanskrit, utkatasana means powerful pose and this is actually a challenging leg and back strengthening asana. As its name indicates, the position of the practitioner in this pose is like that of sitting in a chair. Utkatasana tones the leg muscles excellently so while performing this pose hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteals and the erector muscles of the back are exercised and strengthened. This pose can help would-be-mothers get through their pregnancy with the least amount of discomfort because in early pregnancy this pose is excellent for strengthening the legs in preparation for the extra weight they will soon need to carry. To start with, stand straight with the legs and shoulders wide apart. While keeping your heels anchored flat on the floor, make a deep bend in your knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Bend only as much as is comfortable. Straighten your arms so that they are parallel to the floor and gaze straight ahead. Now lean your upper body backwards while stretching your fingertips as far out in front of you as you can. You should look like you are sitting on an imaginary chair. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds then straighten your legs and come up slowly. Finding correct alignment between your knees and feet is important not only for developing strength and flexibility, but for avoiding injuries, particularly to your knees. Going deeper in the pose, requires huge strength from the quadriceps, one of the largest muscles in the body. So it's important to be gentle because the lower legs bones can rotate when the knees are bent, which increases the risk of injury. Utkatasana should be avoided by people with destabilized knees, strained ligaments, headache, insomnia and low blood pressure. (Juneja is a yoga expert) |

PC’s hardly serious about her work: Annu Kapoor
Following various reports about the film industry sidelining Priyanka Chopra, about her PR machinery crossing lines, and about her alleged affair with Shah Rukh Khan putting her career in jeopardy; some odd balls are now coming out with fresh allegations on the cornered actress.
One such person is Annu Kapoor. In a recent interview, the veteran actor is reported to have said that Priyanka, who was his co-star in the critically-acclaimed 7 Khoon Maaf, did not take her role in the film seriously. The movie portrayed the actress aging from 20 to 65 years, during which she goes through seven marriages. Annu who had played the role of one of Priyanka’s seven husbands, supposedly does not think highly of the actress. Annu stated, “I have been in the industry for 30 years and have worked with some big actors. But when I worked with Priyanka in 7 Khoon Maaf, I felt she didn’t take the role seriously.” Priyanka has a lot of support in the industry, the media, and her family and friends. One of her friends has stated, “Priyanka Chopra not being serious about acting sounds frivolous.” “Just look at the girl’s career graph. Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aitraaz, Bluffmaster!, Taxi No. Nau Do Gyarah, Krrish, Don, Fashion, Dostana, Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf, Don 2 and Agneepath – Brand Priyanka has contributed to more than a dozen hits in a decade; a pace, consistency and bank ability unmatched by most of the other heroines in the industry,” he pointed out, adding that “all these movies could have not been possible if she was not dedicated or passionate towards her work.”

Kids can do wonders
Hollywood Johnny Depp, who raises two kids with partner Vanessa Paradis, says he was miserable
until he had children.
The 48-year-old said that fatherhood is the best thing that ever happened to him, reported a publication. “You feel empty. I was angry and frustrated until I started my own family and my first child was born. Until then I didn’t really appreciate life the way I should have, but fortunately I woke up,” Depp said. His parents divorced when he was 15 years old and he self-harmed as a way to cope with his problems. “You grow up a bit damaged or broken then you have some success but
you don’t know how to feel good about the work you’re doing or the life you’re leading. There is nothing on earth that could ever make me want to relive certain years
of my life when I was young,” he added. — PTI

Counter charges
Hollywood superstar John Travolta is to launch a sexual harassment counter-lawsuit against a man who has accused him of sexual misconduct.
Travolta is accused of sexually harassing a masseur, who is seeking USD 2 million in damages. However, the 58-year-old Pulp Fiction actor’s lawyer Marty Singer said he will take legal action - not only against the claimant, but also the claimant’s lawyer - for malicious prosecution reported a website. “There is a heightened standard for a lawyer suing a celebrity and knowing the media will pick it up. The lawyer can’t just rely on the client. He needs to do an investigation and has an obligation to due diligence,” Singer said. Travolta also said that he could prove the actor was not present in Los Angeles on January 16, the date of the alleged incident. Travolta released a statement through his publicist, saying that he was over 2,000 miles away on the opposite side of America at the time. “This lawsuit is a complete fiction and fabrication. None of the events claimed in the suit ever occurred,” Singer added.

chatter box
Barun Sobti may be the strict and serious Arnav Raizada in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon but off screen he likes having fun. Here is Barun’s list of fun activities that help him to beat stress Watching sports I am a huge sports fan and the first thing that I love doing after returning home from the shoot of my show is watch sports channels. Although, I can watch any kind of sports, cricket and football matches are my favourite. Watching them helps me relax and get de-stressed. Playing football I not only love watching football, but enjoy playing the game equally. I shoot for Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon from 9 AM to 9 PM and after the shoot ends the real fun begins. I along with some members from the cast and crew enjoy a good game of football before we leave for home. Movies Watching movies is another de-stressor that works for me. The most recent movie that I liked was Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa. I watched the movie twice which is an exception because I don’t normally repeat movies. I am not one of those who can watch a movie the second time, even if I liked it. Dinner with wife I enjoy quiet dinners with my wife. Here again, we have made a pact to never visit the same restaurant twice, that way we get to try out different food at different places. Looking out for new restaurants and then going for a long walk together after the meal is fun. Cooking Besides dining out with my wife sometimes, I also cook for her, which I admit is on rare occasions but yes it is fun. The only dish that I can cook well is pasta in white sauce. Reading Another thing that I like to do is read interesting novels. The last book that I read was 2 states by Chetan Bhagat and it really had me hooked. I liked the humour in the book. Speaking to friends and family Speaking to friends and family about any anything is a huge stress reliever. I make sure to keep in touch with them as I can share my problems only with them.
The truth unfolds
In Diya Aur Baati Hum Sooraj (Anas Rashid) and Sandhya (Deepika Singh) will unite as reason for his rudeness will be exposed. Sandhya will learn that he behaved badly with her because he thought she wanted a divorce and wanted to make things easy for her. But as soon as she learns of this sacrifice things will take an interesting turn.
Second innings
While Imagine’s Chandragupta Maurya may air on Sony TV, buzz is that Rajat Tokas might do the lead role. Ashish Sharma who played the role of the warrior hero moved on once the channel went off air.
Take-off time
Colors new show Kathputli starring Vivian Dsena and Drashti Dhami has been
in the news but now it has got a new name Madhubala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon. The show will launch post IPL and will replace Veer Shivaji at 8:30pm on Colors. Hope it does well.
Of crime and criminals
The highest rated drama series on US television NCIS is back on Big CBS Prime. The channel will air the popular criminal investigation show which is more than just an action drama. The international powerhouse performer NCIS has been licensed to over 200 markets around the world. NCIS focuses on the sometimes complex and always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations—murder to espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines— these special agents traverse the globe to investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties.
NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a former Marine gunnery sergeant, leads this troupe of colourful personalities. The team includes NCIS Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, an ex-homicide detective whose instincts in the field are unparalleled and whose quick wit and humorous take on life make him a team favourite. The youthful and energetic forensic specialist Abby Sciuto is a talented scientist whose sharp mind matches her Goth style and eclectic tastes, NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee, an MIT graduate whose brilliance with computers far overshadows his insecurities in the field, and Ziva David, perhaps the most dangerous member of the team, a former Mossad liason now NCIS Special Agent. The last season on NCIS, was about the identity of the notorious Port-to-Port killer: Lt. Jonas Cobb. There were a few kidnappings and one death, but it was wrapped up in the end. While his story arc has been resolved, there’s another major cliffhanger that the finale left us with. DiNozzo has been trusted with a secret, and it will certainly affect the rest of the team on NCIS Season 9.
Conditions apply
Now that Sanchi (Pooja Sharma) has no option but to marry Indu Singh (Aniruddh Dave) in Ruk Jaana Nahin, she will keep a condition before him. She will ask him to get her property papers which she lost. He will get it and the wedding preparations will begin. |

The year ahead
If your birthday is May 9...
It is not worth acting in this particular moment as the situation is not favourable. You will gain profits by pulling back temporarily and maintaining your independence. Your wisdom now lies in waiting and avoiding unpleasant people. You will have abundance of energy—but the work pressure will get you irritated. All commitments and financial transactions need to be handled carefully. Health of an elderly person causes some worry. Some difference may crop up with your mate. You will have difficulty trying to make him or her understand your position. Don’t take your partners for granted. Don’t be eager to let others know how you feel. You will find yourself having to deal with an unexpected and out of the ordinary business situation. This will either be extremely exciting or emotionally draining, but either way it will it be anything but dull. See this as an opportunity to test your personal skills and abilities. You’ll be dynamic and will want to get results. Self-employed people will have fewer chores and tasks and feel like making the most of this “time out”. Be careful as you could miss out on some great opportunities. The time is favourable for getting good results. Your knowledge would increase further. If planning to go abroad for further studies the time is favourable. Check in again to make sure you are all still ‘on the same page’. You will spend more on food, travel and vehicle. If you’re involved in a project that’s gone on for too long and seems to be eating your money, stop it. Whatever occurs now, memories of similar events in the past tend to mar the way you look at current events. Several errands, having to save a pal or ‘bail them out,’ along with holding hands through small ‘mini-crisis’ situations is likely, especially near December. Try to rest.
