Where flies rule the roost
Barwala, May 6
Situation is no better in other villages spread over 14 sq km as more than 200 poultry farms have been set up in the area. Varinder said sprinkling of chemicals by the poultry farm owners to deal with the menace had further taken a toll on the health of the residents as the area had seen an increase in diarrhoea cases. He said recently four dogs had died and about 18 buffaloes fallen ill due to the menace. Another villager Deepak Shelly said at least one person in each house of his locality was suffering from diarrhoea or some other disease after eating food prepared under unhygienic conditions. He said despite covering food items properly, flies managed to enter houses and sit on those. He said though the poultry owners sprayed insect repellents regularly in the area, the doses were high on water and low on insecticides, which nullified the impact of the spray. He said the poultry farm owners were not mixing chemicals with feed, which restricted the breeding of flies in the area, as it reduced the size of eggs. A sweetmeat shop owner in Barwala said: “No one turns up at our shops. We have suffered huge losses due to the menace. The sales have gone down. Now, we have started spraying repellents and have got some relief.” Vijay Bansal, president, Shivalik Vikas Manch (SVM), said through his counsel Ravi Sharma, he had served a legal notice on the Finance Commissioner-cum-Principal Secretary, department of environment, Haryana, for unheeding the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court by failing to comply with its order to deal with the menace. The notice stated that if the commissioner failed to take necessary steps within 10 days as per the court directions, the manch would be forced to move the High Court against him under the Contempt of Court Act. Meanwhile, SDM Sharandeep Kaur Brar has constituted an 11-member public representative team of Barwala block which will submit its report on the fly menace to the district administration. Sarpanch Sanjeev Rana, Deepak Chauhan and sarpanch of Natwal village Surjeet Kumar’s names figure on the list. |

Delay in lifting of wheat worries farmers
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 6 “The inclement weather has further aggravated the problem. More than 5 lakh bags of procured wheat are lying in the Bassi Pathana grain market,” said Rajesh Singla, state press secretary, Punjab Arhtiya Association. He said Markfed had not lifted the procured wheat. Due to rain, wheat had started rotting, moreover, there was no space in mandis to unload the produce being brought by farmers, he added. He said the farmers and commission agents were the worst sufferers. He stated that the lifting process had not yet started properly, resulting in heaps of procured wheat bags lying unattended in the mandis. He urged the officials concerned to lift wheat from mandis. He said as there was only one contractor in the grain market, there was an acute shortage of labour. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan claimed that the procurement process was going on smoothly. A total of 2,66,286 lakh metric tonnes of wheat had been procured against 2,29,856 lakh metric tonnes procured last year.
