Creative LINE(S)
Ramya Mishra Pandey is out with her latest book Love Lasts Forever. Here’s a tete-a tete with her.
Who motivated you to choose this profession? Behind every successful man there is a woman and trust me behind every successful woman there is again a woman. My inspiration is my mother, I learnt so many things from her but primarily I learnt time management and dedication from her. What helped you decide on this theme? Nothing specific, I want to write on those topics that people hesitate to discuss openly, but which affect their lives. Both my novels are on similar lines, one talks about parental expectations and its impact on children while the other speaks about arranged marriages and the complexities. What’s the USP of your latest novel? My latest novel talks about marriage. It touches various issues like growing intolerance in youth, falling marriages, rise in materialistic lust among the youth. Though this all may sound very serious and boring stuff but all this has been dealt with in a lighter note. Lot of humour is infused to convey the message without making it boring.I have even touched terrorism in my novel. But all the topics that I have touched in my novel, have relevance and strengthened the plot. What are your upcoming works? I am working on my third project, which probably will be a novel again. I am toying with certain ideas but nothing concrete as of now. I am also planning to direct a short film, the script is finalised, production details are being worked out. Hopefully, before my next novel, my short film will release. How did you overcome challenges that came your way? My biggest challenge was to get the right publisher. The story does not end with writing a book, infact it is just the beginning. The real drama begins after that, one has to search the publisher, do aggressive marketing and publicity so that book grabs maximum attention, which result in sales. All this is a tedious and time consuming task. Before writing a novel, I do a lot of study about the ongoing trend, which helps me in getting an idea about the competition and further helps me in writing. — Mona

Costume-made!
Sitting pretty in Bollywood, she couldn’t have styled the Janes and Janets of Lucknow or Sao Paulo. Cut. Having styled Sonam Kapoor for Aisha, the next graduation in her career couldn’t come calling easily. Cut. The move to be a curator from being a stylist was rather a natural progression than an impulsive decision. “Before this venture, there wasn’t really a website that was fully curated by a stylist.” Having connected the dots, Bollywood stylist Pernia Qureshi moves on to speak of her labour of love, the e-commerce venture Pernia’s Pop Up Shop. Web world
The story behind the endeavour might have the clichéd narration of “was getting bored, looking for something challenging and didn’t want to stay stagnant” but that’s where she pulls all stops. “This would be the first-of-its-kind fashion website that would cater to the designer wear. I will personally see all the collections and put only a fraction of them online.” She adds, “Every single week there will be new products’ accessories uploaded On B-town
Styling for Bollywood, comes intact with its share of the flipside. Too good outfits couldn’t stop the criticism, save the film Aisha. “Even if there are people who speak against you, I take it as a compliment.” There ought to be some credit for having designed for a film that focused on fashion. “I was given the brief that the character is someone who loves to shop and splurge. As a costume designer, I just did my job.” The website might see her put a coma, if not a full stop to films. “I’ve said no to a lot of films. Either you need to have this full creative satisfaction or they need to be paying me really well.” She couldn’t have emphasized each word more. “I’m saying the word either because even getting ‘either’ things are difficult, let alone getting all of them.” Back then
Back in New York, the journey from working with the fashion magazines, being a trained Kuchipudi dancer to Bollywood has been quite a thing. “I was working with Harper’s Bazaar when they would ask me as to why I was not in India because that is where all the action is.” All this while, her asymmetrical pastel sea-green kaftan keeps distracting. She looks her part and all set to dress the world. “I’ve always strongly felt that if you are selling something, you should advertise it. If I don’t look stylish myself, who would trust me for making them look good.” manpriya@tribunemail.com

Laughter — a challenge
A woman's ultimate fantasy is having two men in two different positions ….one in the kitchen-cooking; another cleaning! Well, a day before the World Laughter Day, our first laugh came from this SMS. In today's mechanical life, sometimes it's a SMS that makes for the only laughter in the day. Like it or not, gone are the days when families would sit together and share a hearty laugh on a daily basis. One connects with friends over the phone or Facebook more, than in real. And, if one is looking to spread a laugh, a SMS packed with a punch does the job.
Long working hours, challenging targets, life is hectic in the banking industry. On a long day at ICICI, banker Mandeep finds a light moment in a funny SMS that lands on her cell-phone, "An SMS today is a sure way to lift up the mood, " says Mandeep, who reciprocates the gesture as and when work allows. She shares her favourite: God: Beta mannat mango. Man: Plz mujhe phir se unmarried kar do… God: Beta 'mannat' mango 'jannat' nahi!! SMS jokes were pretty popular among students till chatting took over. Says Kunjan, an applied arts student, "SMS is such a convenient way to exchange short notes, especially jokes with one's friends. Sadly, with the latest limit being 'just' 200 messages a day, I really can't share jokes with all my friends anymore!" Well, each to his own! Aman Bharti, who runs a popular boutique, does have a full inbox, but no time to read messages. "My work and kids keep me occupied each minute; forget laughing, I have heard the word 'laughter' after ages," says Aman. Probably, seeing this state that many like Aman face, there is a surfeit of comedy shows. Since life situations are increasingly getting devoid of humour, staged humour is 'the' thing. We ask our own comedy king Jaspal Bhatti. "With changing times, means of expression have changed. SMS is a convenient form to share funny bytes, but what I miss here is that 'ha ha ha ha' reply doesn't convey the mirth on other's face." Well, he is doing his bit, wait for his fully loaded comedy flick Powercut, which is due for release this summer….till then share a laugh!!! mona@tribunemail.com

Over the ages, the modes might have changed, not the subject. Marriage, Santa, Rajnikant rock… Ra.one might have eclipsed the later’s popularity, but our quick gun murugan is back in action. Though there are comments on increasingly changing lifestyles.

A 54 year old woman had a heart attack. On the operation table at the hospital, she asked the God if it was the end. God said No, you have 34 more years to live. After recovering from the heart operatin, woman decided to undergo facelift, liposuction, tummy tuck and even changed her hair colour. The day she left hospital, she was run over by a truck. She asked God, ‘I thought you said I had 34 years to live. God replied: I couldn’t recognise you. Laugh out loud
Laughter clubs are gaining ground in Chandigarh. They say that both real and fake laughter provide the same physiological and psychological benefit. "But together in a group when the forced laughter turns into real, it is real fun," says Janak Narula from Fragrance Laughter Club. Reduced stress levels, positive thinking, strong immune system, better health, members of the laughter club count the benefits on their fingertips. If you want to experience it, one of the clubs is celebrating the day at 6:30 am at the Garden of Fragrance, Sector 36.

Chic style
It’s about time the questions deviated to Bollywood’s first officially tagged stylista. “Sonam Kapoor is amazing to work with. Pernia Qureshi is very enthusiastic about things; someone who’ll be ready to try out even at 1.30 in the morning.” She adds, “For the movie, there were as many as 87-odd changes; we had prepared for 100 dress changes and for that I must have made her try at least 200 outfits.
For a costume designer, she’s a pleasure to work with.” And there probably couldn’t be a better brand ambassador for a fashion website. “She’s bought a kurta from the website… I don’t style her on a daily basis, but I style her otherwise for commercials as well appearances.”

Act II
The theatre lovers of Chandigarh are in for a treat as Ran Virasat and Vivek High School bring the National School of Drama Repertory Company to the city on May 6 and 7. It is after a gap of seven years that the Repertory company, which has started a new wing Yayawar, will be showcasing its trained actors and some great stories.
Sharing the details of the theatre festival, playwright and director Asif Ali of Rang Virasat shares, “Yayawar is a travelling unit. The basic premise of the group is to bring theatre to people, just like how people have been going to theatre.” The plays will take on a whole new meaning due to its director, Ranjeet Kapur, an NSD alumnus and a Sangeet Natak Akademi winner. The first play Chekhov Ki Duniya is a mishmash of six of Chekhov’s plays. Based in Russia, the play revolves around human emotions and relationships. On the second day, Aadamjad, is a story by Vijay Dandetha, where the cast plays a major role. Detha is known mainly for his short stories that draw from traditional folklore of Rajasthan. On the same day, Panchlight, written by Phnishwar Nath Renu, will be staged. The play is a satire that draws from the caste system and how education lifts darkness from people’s lives. Talking about the effort made by the school in encouraging theatre, Asif says, “It’s good to know that the spirit of true theatre is being encouraged in the school. It is after all tough to gather the best from the theatre world and bring them to Chandigarh.” It’s time to just sit back and watch the magic of theatre unfold. (The plays will be staged at Vivek High School on May 6, 7 at 6:30pm) vasudha@tribunemail.com

green thumb We have been talking the utility of a particular species when it comes to plantation. But then there are exceptions. The beauty of some of the trees, shrubs etc is such that they cannot be ignored. Even a bad trait may be given an overlook. Dillenia is one such plant. Also called Chalta, this plant has attractive parts. When the tree is in foliage, one can easily say that such bold foliage makes it a good shade tree but it sheds leaves in the summer when the shade is needed the most. And that is the only disadvantage with this tree which is, however, overcome once it comes into foliage. Chalta is a self-disciplined tree that forms a perfect umbrella. And if it does not do so one can prune here and there when it is dormant in the summer. The leaves are about a foot long and distinctly ribbed and serrated. The glossy foliage is deep green and shining too. The flowers are bold and white. Their size may be six to eight inches when opened. They are highly scented. The fruit is almost round and hangs with a long thread. It is lemon flavoured. Almost every plant part, fruit, calyx, fruit, roots etc find medicinal use. The fruit is also eaten by tribesmen as tonic and for making cool beverage. The bark of the tree is also used. The range of its curing quality as claimed in ayurveda is from dandruff control to food poison control. The tree is also used for building purposes as timber. Another tree that has strange and attractive floral beauty is Erythrina crista-galli. Sorry no common name for this. The tree is highly drought-resistant and its main corky and crooked trunk has immense architectural beauty. The tree does not grow very high. The branches are spreading and the flowers are borne on terminals. The anthurium like flowers are born in bunches. The tree is free flowering. Erythrina indica is another sister strain of this native tree. That is also very drought-resistant and bears deep red flowers in bunches. The flowers are parrot beak like. It makes a good pot plant, in early stages where it gives flowers too. The flowers are borne by the tree when there is no foliage. All these indigenous trees make an excellent garden specimen trees. Doc talk Fruits are nature’s healthiest gift packed with vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. The fruits and vegetables available during the summer are naturally blessed with extra fluid and electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chlorides). Fruits in the initial of the season are orange and grape, throughout the summer mango, papaya, cantaloupe, melon and loquat and by the mid and end of summers we get juicy lychee and peach. This gives us a large variety to enjoy. All the fruits are rich in vitamins and plant derived nutrients known as phytonutrients like beta-carotenes, flavonoids and anthocyanins. Vitamin A and C commonly found in most of the fruits which are powerful anti-oxidant properties. While weight training the diet should have 50 per cent fruits just to reduce side-effects of weight loss like skin loosening, hair loss and allergies. Function of anti-oxidants and phytonutrients: n They are scavengers of free radicals n Anti-cancer properties n Anti-aging properties n Anti-allergic properties n
Natural immune- Orange: It’s a great source of vitamin C. Peeled oranges taken as a whole is also rich in fibre which helps in digestion. An orange after dinner can really help mobilise your fatty foods. In many barbeque preparation, it is served with your meat /fish delicacies with a motive to facilitate digestion of fats. Grape: The main ingredient of red wine, when taken as 15 ml daily will make your heart healthy. Grapes are filled with all the possible vitamins and it is rich in fibre. Unlike many other fruits, it also provides proteins. Hence it is known as the queen of fruits. But one caution is the bunch should be thoroughly washed in running water, removed from its branches and connection, to remove all the bulbs, cleaned and then consumed. The residue of pesticides and spider web which are not generally visible are the common reason for sore throat and certain stomach ailments. Mango: Richest source of vitamin A, more than papaya. Vitamin A also is a powerful antioxidant. This fruit should be preferred before meals, because of its high calorie value and to improve digestion. After meals, the rich sugars of mango are stored as fat. Take one mango and plan for exercise. Mango milkshake only help to add on calories and dilute the nutrient level of mango. So prefer mango eating as a whole. Papaya: The best part of papaya is its low calorie value compared to all the other fruits and it is very filling. One bowl (100gm) gives only 32 Kcal. It is good source of vitamin A, vitamin C. Sabzi of ripe papaya tastes like pumpkin or bottle gourd and can be consumed with rotis. You can even make paranthas of grated ripe papaya. Cantaloupe/muskmelons and water melons: these are the real summer fruits which can be enjoyed to its core for its, low calories, juiciness and large water content. They are rich in electrolytes and are an instant medicine to dehydration. Even their seeds have good protein value; they are dried and roasted before consumption. Loquat: It has same properties of a mango but comparatively low in sugar and calories. Peach: They are low in calories and have a good combination of vitamin A, B-complex,& C. a very refreshing drink is the ice tea. (Dr Singla is a Zirakpur-based cosmetologist and obesity consultant) |

the ‘in’ side A studio apartment is one large room that is partitioned off into a kitchen, living and a sleeping area. The bathroom is the only separate room. Decorating these can be very tricky because all the things are part of a single undivided room. Here are a few tips to keep in mind. n Utility and not luxury is the key word. Get rid of clutter and only keep stuff that is absolutely necessary. n Don’t complicate by designing too much. Keep one consistent theme throughout the entire apartment. n Storage space should be large and concealed. n Buy smart multipurpose and space conscious furniture. Buy ottomans and chairs that have storage space or a sofa that doubles as a bed. n Avoid too many dividers as this will make the space look too small. Instead try demarcating separate areas with strategic furniture placement. n Lighting plays an important role in making the apartment look spacious. n If your studio apartment has sufficient height, create a loft and make it accessible by stairs. Use this space for either storage, a study or even as a sleeping area. n Use mirrors in strategic places to create an illusion of space and light. n Avoid blocking natural light. This will make your apartment look small. Instead of heavy drapes, go for light sheer curtains. n Stick to light shades while painting your apartment. Pastels will make the area seem more open. n Create areas for various activities. You can have your bed in a corner with a mirror or a dresser. Your kitchen and dining can be combined at the other end and your living space can be created in the middle. n Keep your traffic paths clear. You don’t want to bang into furniture to get to the main door. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior & landscape designer) |

Anurag’s blunt talk
After Dev D, That Girl in Yellow Boots, Shaitan, Kalki Koechlin was left out of the cast of her husband Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film Gangs Of Wasseypur. But contrary to what’s being written in newspaper, Kashyap clarified the reason and lashed out at journalists. He said, “A journo who writes, “Kalki is not good enough for Anurag” isn’t good enough to cover cinema for he does not understand Gangs of Wasseypur is set in Bihar and he also doesn’t understand that marrying someone does not mean that I will make all my films with her. We don’t mix work with personal life and to quote me without interviewing me on the subject is downright selling other people for five bucks.”

Blessings for the baby

Not a mushy one
Gul Panag hates romantic films as a producer, actress, and an audience. She is producing a Punjabi film. She feels Bollywood needs more sensible films. She is seen in this week’s Fatso and is very good in it.
No action please!
Audiences don’t like Indian action movies these days. What else will explain the failure of Players, Tezz, and Agent Vinod. We are now relying on Salman Khan and Aamir Khan to reinstate this genre with Ek Tha Tiger and Dhoom 3.

This will create problems between the brothers.

Plan of action

Sway with me
With the popular reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa launching post IPL, buzz about contestants is heating up. Gurmeet Choudhary, lead of Zee TV’s Punar Vivah and Anas Rashid, from Star Plus’ Diya Aur Baati Hum are the new names in the list. The two have been approached and are considering the offer the grapevine claims.

Rising star
Lead of Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behena Hai on Star Plus, Krystle D’souza is thrilled that her show and her life is on an upswing. Appreciated for her performance and lauded for her beauty, the pretty actress talks about herself, her linkup and love.
How has it been playing the docile Jeevika? She is so unlike me. I love talking and laughing but Jeevika is a reserved, calm person who takes a while to let go. Being an elder sister and a bahu, she has to maintain decorum. I am enjoying playing the part as her clam nature is rubbing off on me. I am very protective of my family like her. How do you look back on your career? I started my career in TV when I was 16 and soon I knew this is what I wanted to do. I am glad for all the opportunities that have come my way. I have accomplished a lot and want to keep up the pace. Your Hindi has always been a talking point. Yes as I am a Catholic, I had to learn proper Hindi, which was tough as at home and otherwise I mostly speak English. I worked hard at learning my lines. You have been linked up with co-star Karan Tacker. Yes, but such news do not bother me. We are friends on the set and our chemistry works on screen which might be the reason for these rumours. He is a good support and a brilliant actor. What does love mean to you? I believe in love and I think it is a wonderful feeling. But I don’t talk about my personal life. What’s next? I am glad that Ek Hazaroon came my way and I am able to prove my talent. Of course, I would like to move to movies next. Reality shows too would be cool and fun. Let’s see what’s in store for me. — HRM

The year ahead
If your birthday is May 6...
You’ll meet people who will stimulate your creative nature and desire to show others how lively you are. You’ll be extrovert during this period and others will find your happy-go-lucky ways contagious. You’ll have no inhibitions in saying what you think. It is important that you unite with others and feel part of a group; this will bring you luck. So do not hesitate to put yourself forward in a disinterested way with others. You will have to take important decisions today- which will make you tense and nervous. Financial losses seem likely if you invest on the words of others. New look, new outfit, new friends are on the way. You will be unable to express your feelings to your beloved. You will suffer disappointment- as recognition and rewards that you were expecting will get postponed. Choose your words with care when interacting with important people. Put an idea into words or other representation this week and get it in front of some pertinent people. The feedback you get looks particularly valuable, whereas over the next couple of days during this week, clear communication is elusive. Be available and make time for some proactive checking in on important clients or projects. Be patient. Celestial designs which now are a hindrance, will soon improve. Students will do well in their studies and their hard work put in for their exams will certainly bring them good results. Those appearing for their board exams will see their names in the list of merit. They will subsequently get admissions to the college or university of their choice. A fast fix may be necessary and just ‘throwing money will not help. Emotional discussions with family members may have to be held this week. A small delay may cost you money if you don’t solve problems quickly enough. Mood: Vulnerable at times but overall ‘confident.’ Compatible signs: Aries, Taurus. Lucky colours: Deep blue and Brown. Lucky days: Friday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 9, 11, 18, 28. Lucky gem: Tourmaline. Lucky flower: Marigold.
Leslie Hope (Leslie Ann Hope) was born on, May 6, 1965 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and she is a famous Hollywood actor. She has previously appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Kira Nerys’ mother Kira Meru, and in the Gemini Award-winning Human Cargo. She appeared as Attorney General of the United States Melanie Blackston in five episodes of Commander in Chief and, in the Fall of 2006, played Lily Rader in the now-cancelled CW drama series, Runaway.
