Brutally Frank!
Literary journeys have strange courses. For 35-year-old author Frank Huzur, an unusual man with an unusual name, it has been no different
Parbina Rashid

Frank Huzur—an unusual name, an unusual person! But born as Manoj Kumar in Buxar, Bihar, he was as simple as they came-a shy young boy who wrote poetry, played cricket and hero-worshipped Imran Khan. And his transformation from Manoj Kumar to Manoj Khan to Frank Huzur, interestingly, sums up the literary journey of this 35-year-old author.

Let us begin with his Frank Huzur phase and the controversy he created with his latest book Imran vs Imran—The untold story, a biography of the iconic cricketer and failed politician, which Imran later denied in print as his authorised biography.

"Well, when I started in 2007 it was the official political biography. Things changed when Imran Khan came under pressure because of the Sita White controversy in 2009. And the fact that he chose an Indian biographer to write about him was also another issue," says Frank who is in Chandigarh to interact with the students of Dikshant International School, Zirakpur.

Imran wanted him to delete the portion on Sita White (Anna-Luisa White) that has Imran's former wife Jemima Goldsmith quoting that Anna made Jemima the guardian of Tyrian, the daughter Anna had with Imran. Frank refused. So a middle-path was adopted--to strike out the 'The authorised biography' tag.

However, his association with Imran does not just end here. A second book The Fighter will soon follow in the digital form. "The Fighter includes those areas of Imran, which could not be included in his political biography," he says. So, how difficult is it to be an ardent fan of a man and then turn into a detached biographer for the same? "It's a difficult order, more so because you are aiming at telling a story that has not been told before. You adore your subject and at the same time try to maintain parity, otherwise your book would not be a biography but a pamphlet of your subject's achievements," he explains. Frank seemed to have mastered the art, moving onto his next venture — this time a biography on Mulayam Singh Yadav.

But is not biography little too easy a subject for a writer who wrote a play like Hitler in Love With Madonna, a controversial creation that marked the end of his cherished magazine Utopia, which he edited under the pen-name Manoj Khan when he was still a student of Hindu College.

"That was indeed the turning point of my life. The play, which centered around love but took a dig at the political scene post Babri Masjid demolition, made things so ugly that I was forced to go into hibernation; Utopia suffered and died its premature death after 13 issues. It was then that I decided to change my name to Frank Huzur. They say my mother, who died when I was six-months-old, used to call me Huzur. So I just added Frank as a suffix." He has written another play Blood is Burning, but has not yet published it. Frank, who has toyed with all genres of literature, is happy being a full-time writer.

"I am planning to write a novel now. Like all other writings of mine, especially the poetry and play, love would be the central theme," he reveals. A romantic at heart despite all the political hard-hitting he does. But then that's what makes him an unusual man with an unusual name!

Rupa Bajwa, author of the much-acclaimed The Sari Shop, talks about her second book Tell Me A Story and the ethics that are integral to her personality
Ashima Batish

Zandu Balm, in between the interaction, finds a casual mention a couple of times. Not as a product, but because Ramchand, the protagonist of the book, The Sari Shop, applies it when he is stressed out. The second time it's used is to explain a slight autobiographical feature of the books' author, who's also our subject, Rupa Bajwa. "Even I use Zandu Balm when I am a bit anxious." A bit of Rupa's personality seeped into Rani as well, the central character of her second book, Tell Me A Story. "I carry pain-reliever Crocin with me, so does Rani."

Rupa is a non-conformist by all means. Why else did it take her eight years to come up with Tell Me A Story? Unlike how authors go about shaping their careers following the success of the debut novel with back-to-back books, she took a different path. "I didn't want to adhere to David Dhawan's formula of 'success-if-one-film works' and make half-a-dozen on the same line; it just didn't suit my sensibilities," says Rupa, who was in Chandigarh to launch her book at The Browser, Sector-8. The book is about Rani's life, a girl who works in a beauty parlour and comes from a lower middle-class family.

Celebrity status doesn't matter to her. "I don't think it would enrich my life in any way." She makes it evident in the first ten minutes of the interview that writing, for her, is a very serious business, something that she does each day. She does not sound too upbeat about the dime-a-dozen authors today, "It feels sad to see that anybody who knows English; has some free time and indulgent parents becomes a writer. Let it be a profession for people who don't expect money or fame out of it."

And why she hasn't fallen into the trap of being a 'celebrated author' is because of the, "Situations in life. I became a mother and priorities got divided." She confesses that there are times when she gets jolted by stronger emotions, "Why can't my books sell out? Why I don't get bothered about the plummeting bank balance? Why can't I play my cards well?" But how can she? For someone who is still grappling with the fact that she is a celebrated author, who only wants to write and not network at all, who believes that selling a story on Indian authors is the safest bet! 'Poverty in India' would be a 'spiritual suicide'—stronger emotions are only a misconception!

The facts still can't be denied. Slumdog Millionaire was bought by the whole world. Rupa adds that poverty is a very subjective issue. "The upper-middle class might feel that domestic helps are poor, but they live well. People staying in slum areas may be earning more." She doesn't agree that this sob story sells well; but then, don't forget, she is a non-conformist!

Tube of knowledge
Learning takes on a whole new meaning when HD videos start teaching. We explore to find out how the current generation is learning just about everything from YouTube
Vasudha Gupta

When was the last time you really learnt something? When you were in school, right? The classes, the teachers and the laboratories took up all the time in the world. Let's peep into a more modern, more today way of learning. Well, move over burdens and deadlines, the Gen Y is busy learning the strangest things, from tying a bow-tie to cooking, from YouTube!

Like someone has said: "Life is like Youtube. Everything we do, we get comments from people. They share it with other people. And they'll decide to like us or dislike." It is mostly the number of likes on a video that really gets people hooked on to learning. A fun-loving engineer, Arushi Kalra had an embarrassing experience before she opened the laptop and has since been taking make-up tips from YouTube. "It's unbelievable, how practical and easy YouTube is," she says. Today, the lady has learnt how to shape her bangs and dress up like a star. "There is this one particular woman on YouTube, she has the maximum number of hits and she is a dream make-up artist."

If you think make-up is where it ends, think again. There is an entire breed of upcoming musicians who are busy checking out videos of their 'gods'; learning to strum the guitar and make sense of a saxophone! Recalls Mihir Raina, hotel management student, "I was always fascinated with the guitar." Today, a professional in the field, he still looks back to the videos for acing his skills. "Visual aids are the best thing to learn from," he opines. From learning how to make a smoke bomb (let's not get ideas now) to tying a bow-tie, the young lad has learnt a lot from the tube.

Let's go back a little into time. How did we learn to study? By figuring out how the world of books really works, but the new species of technocrats are taking all their science lessons on YouTube! "Studies take on a whole new meaning over the Internet," she says. Learning all about microelectronics and semiconductors happened on YouTube! "The best part is that if you miss it in class, the Internet will play and replay it for you," she adds.

Picking up something over the Internet has nothing to do with age. We ran into Ajay Grover, who has just passed his Class ten and is all excited to share his side of the story with us. For this young lad, well, a little too young actually, it was the fascination of ad placements on Google that got his mind ticking. "The ad placements have specific code variations, which are also used in i-Phone 5. I picked it up from YouTube videos," he smiles. Ajay has also learnt hacking (let's again not get ideas now), web designing and a bit of his studies!

Learning over the Internet takes a whole new meaning when you run into youngsters who have started companies and are now giving free online classes. Sahil Kohli, MD Xerocopy, shares his interesting story with us, "I had just enrolled in a course of website development at the National Institute of Computer Training and was told to learn from videos on YouTube." Spending over 10 hours each day learning designing, today, the lad has a young success story to his credit. "We have made over 83 websites till now and are still counting," he says.

So, have you been able to learn how to mend a heart on YouTube?

An Italian platter
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

For the Punjabi gourmet who loves the Italian cuisine as much as he loves his tandoori chicken, there were not many options except the pizzas and pastas, but now introducing a variety from the Italian cuisine is Oregano, the Italian restaurant at JW Marriott. And making the cuisine friendly to the Indian taste-buds is Chef Antonello Cancedda, the Italian chef of the hotel.

From risottos to ravioli, pizza without cheese, soups, salads and desserts, the Chef has some traditional dishes cooking in his pan for the Punjabi connoisseur who travels as much on his feet as on his stomach! Considering the fact, chef Antonello says, “Introducing authentic Italian cuisine has not been difficult as people here love their food”. Starting the meal with garlic bread, sundried tomato and garlic dip, the chef introduces the fresh Italian cuisine to us. The ingredients used are not overcooked and most of them leave a crunchy taste in the mouth. What’s even more interesting is that the chef is a happy-go-lucky fellow who likes to sing as he cooks and that seeps into his cooking too, making it a happy meal!

His idea of a typical Italian meal is a little of everything, so we tried almost every single dish that he had cooked delicately. But, like all other calorie-conscious people, we too wanted food devoid of extra cheese and to our surprise, there was a pizza without cheese (isn’t it a revelation for the Indian Pizza lovers who always like their pizza with an extra dash of cheese?). A tongue-tickling, thin-crust pizza topped with rosemary and served with mozzarella cheese and sun-dried tomatoes! That’s not the only one you can choose from a variety, including pizza with peppers, anchovies, shrimps, parma ham, artichoke, zucchini and much more. The chef served us asparagus, broccoli, kalamata olives, cherry tomato sauted in Italian herbs with mozerella and parmesan to spice up the taste. Healthy yet appetizing greens! The risotto served by the chef was a perfect mix of greens with green asparagus, pecorino cheese and lemon dust, making it splendid to taste.

One can also try zuppas (soups) like chick peas, pancetta and baby spinach soup, the classic minestrone soup or the cream of Porcini mushrooms with garlic crostini. We instead jumped to lasagna, which was cooked with spinach, peppers and parmesan cheese; a perfect mouth-watering dish. Last but not the least, there is variety like Cioccolato fondente, chocolate and amaretti pudding or the famous Gelati misti (choice of famous Italian ice-creams), but nothing beats the tiramisu, which was our choice to end a perfect Italian meal!

A still from Jannat 2
A still from Jannat 2

Jannat 2 is a rollercoaster journey of Sonu Dilli (Emraan Hashmi) and an angst-ridden cop (Randeep Hooda) set against the murky underbelly of the gun trade. One ordinary man’s (Emraan Hashmi) quest for his personal heaven creates hell for him until with the help of a cop Pratap (Randeep Hooda), he breaks away from it all and does something extraordinary to make things better for the community. Sonu falls in love with a beautiful young doctor Jhanvi (Esha Gupta), along his journey and that throws his life’s course into a tailspin with unforeseen and far-reaching consequences for all three of them.

All is not well

Emraan Hashmi fails in his dialogue delivery. Esha Gupta adds the glamour quotient to the movie and Randeep Hooda pulls off well with his tall, dark and handsome looks.

— Manav Arora, law student, PU

Intersecting angles

The romantic angle of the movie is quite dull but the crime-drama part grabs the eyeballs. The chemistry between Emraan and Esha looks pretty artificial. The storyline is a well-thought one but the music is average.

Rohan Verma, bank employee

Smart choice

Emraan dons a street-smart look; Randeep Hooda makes his appearance notice-worthy through his physique and husky vocals. On the other hand Esha adds a different flavour. Overall the movie is interesting.

HEART talk
Change for the good
Parvesh Rana

I’m a thirty-five-year-old woman and married for 10 years now. Recently my husband has started convincing me to wear western outfits and follow the latest fashion trends, be it for hairstyles or clothes. On the contrary I’m a very simple kind of person who feels comfortable in Indian suits. What should I do?

— Richa, Chandigarh

Times are changing and even you should learn to move on with it. It’s not wrong on your husband’s part to see you dress according to the latest trends. You should at least try going for a make-over which suits your age and personality. If you are not comfortable with the change you can always get back to your old self but the whole trial part will make your husband feel happy.

Trust your love

I have been in a relationship with a girl for eight months. We had some misunderstanding as I thought that she was cheating on me. Now I have realised that I was wrong and I cannot live without her. What should I do?

— Amit, Chandigarh

A relation works best if there is enough faith and loyalty otherwise it cannot be a strong relationship. You should definitely apologise to her that you misunderstood her character.

Summer style mantra
Be yourself: Sameera
Be yourself: Sameera

Sameera is hot, sexy, fit, and (tries to be) stylish. Recently seen in Tezz, she has been in the news and on the events circuit simply because she is a pretty face. The attractive woman shares her style tips which you can use, especially this summer.

1.One should never go by the fashion fads doing the rounds or get influenced by the runway couture. Instead, try and figure out what looks best on you and stick to that.

2.Don’t treat make up like war paint, understand the occasion, and do your make up accordingly as heavy make up can add to ones age. Sometimes, make-up is not required.

3.A crisp white shirt teamed with blue denims and smart peep-toe shoes, a little black dress and a pair of hot shoes to go with it will make you look wow!

4.Sexy shoes can make any boring dress or outfit look great so pay attention and buy attractive shoes. People judge you by your shoes so invest in them. They also make you feel sexy and confident and men love women in stilettos.

5.A saree is also a must have in every Indian woman’s wardrobe, this 9 yards of clothing can do wonders for any body type and can make anyone look sensuous and beautiful.

Punch in Dhoom 3

Training hard: Katrina Kaif

While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan locked lips in Dhoom: 2, there is nothing of that sort happening between Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan.  They are going to battle it out in the climax of their film.

A source says, ‘So Aamir and Katrina are training hard for this sequence. Katrina is already on a special diet and working out. Aamir has been doing gymnastics for a while. Once his television show is on air, he will train for this sequence with Katrina. They are not the best of friends but they are professional and get along so they will do this well. It is the highlight of the movie. Katrina is going to kick him in the rear as she is on the good side and he is the villain. That she is a dainty damsel will not be taken into consideration. She will wear leather pants and look lethal and not spare him, almost like Scarlett’s Black Widow in The Avengers.’

The source continues, ‘This scene will be very high-tech and slick. It will be promoted also. They will train together so the scene flows naturally while shooting. It will be woman-to-man, hand-to-hand, and weapon-to-weapon. It will be shot in Chicago towards the end of September.’

The film will release next year and there is no official update on the same as it is too early to talk about it.

Angelina hates the ring?

Hollywood superstar actress Angelina Jolie, who recently got engaged to partner Brad Pitt, reportedly hates her USD 500,000 sparkler.

The 36-year-old and Pitt, 48, confirmed their engagement news recently. Jeweler Robert Procop, who designed the bauble, first broke the news about couple’s engagement.

Jolie was first seen wearing the sparkling diamond at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Chinese Galleries.

But Jolie took the band off for her recent meeting with the foreign minister of Ecuador and now a publication reports that the actress is not very fond of the ring.

“She isn’t fond of it. Nothing against Brad’s design. She’s just never been enamored of white diamonds. Emeralds are her favorite. The diamond shows how little he knows her. She’s so demanding. She’s acting like a bridezilla,” a friend said. —PTI

Not in love: Bipasha Basu

Ever since Bipasha Basu broke-up with beau John Abraham; there have been constant rumours of them patching up and not to forget her alleged marriage plans with Dum Maaro Dum co-star Rana Daggubati.

However, Bipasha announced that she isn’t struck by cupid at all.

“For a long time my name is being yoyo-ed with few people, as in when dating, break up, then patch up and marriage stories are being made. I really wish all this stops as none of it is happening. Fun loving person does not mean frivolous. Meeting people doesn’t mean dating them,” she said.

She added that when love happens she won’t hide it: “When love happens I will embrace it and give it respect, not hide it ever. It takes a lot in a man for my heart to tick and flutter. Not happened yet!”

Right to demand

Hollywood actress Halle Berry’s ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry, is asking for a monthly payment of $ 20,000 for child support. Aubry and Berry are currently fighting a bitter custody battle over their 4-year-old daughter Nahla.

In addition to the monthly payment of $ 20,000, Aubry 36, also wants half a million in attorney’s fees from Berry, 45, reported a website. The Canadian model was in court recently regarding his appeal for an increase in child support, but his paperwork wasn’t filled out properly. Sources said Aubry believes he is entitled to the money because he needs a proper environment to care for Nahla. The former couple started dating in 2005 and Berry gave birth to their daughter in 2008. Aubry split up Halle in 2010 as the former felt the two did not spend enough time together. — PTI

The royal Bengali touch...

Suhasi Dhami has been playing Abha in Zee TV’s Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli for over two years. She is one of the few to get a chance to don new looks in the show. With her Bengali avtaar coming up, here is the actress talking about it.

Your Bengali look reminds us of Aishwarya’s Paro.

We didn’t think of it like that. And it isn’t the Paro look but a Bengali look. Because Devdas and Aishwarya are famous, people connect the look to the film. I will be decked up as a Bengali woman which has been super fun.

Tell us about the twist in the show

With four members of Abha’s family dead, while Karan has lost his memory, there is lots happening in Abha’s life. She was forced to marry the Bengali Dr Viren. I think in recent times, too many twists have occurred on the show- it has been hard to keep up [laughs].

Your co star Karan too has got a Ghajini look.

Yes Karan (V Grover) is very excited about the new change in his role. He loves the look of the shaved head and huge scar a la Ghajini.

When was playing Abha most interesting?

It was fun to play Albeli as not only did my look change from a bahu to a banjaran but the lingo and body language too was different. It was exciting. Though I am enjoying the Bengali bit too but here the change is outward as the audiences will see the Abha they have known since last two and half years.

What would you say is your claim to fame?

Yahaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli has given me a lot. I have had so many changes that I feel what next would I be doing.

You are actress Drashti Dhami’s bhabhi. What kind of rapport do you share with her?

Yes she is my sister in law and we have a cool relationship. We talk about work and home, take and give advice and are part of each other’s lives. — HRM.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is May 5...

On the career front, the year can give you much stress. Money matters may act as a constraint and force you to start saving money. Personal relationships may suffer due to lack of self-discipline. Health matters may need attention as there are chances for stomach problems. For a contented life improve your mental toughness.

Although your financial position improves but the outflow of money will still create hindrance in executing your projects. Be independent and take your own decisions when it comes to making fresh investments. Pleasure trips will be satisfying. You’ll meet people who will stimulate your creative nature and desire to show others how lively you are. You’ll be extrovert in this period and others will find your happy-go-lucky ways contagious. You’ll have no inhibitions in saying what you think. Work like crazy and get your usual responsibilities out of the way. You’re a creative powerhouse now; work on it. Strong reactions are a sign at the end of 2012, but restrain yourself from instantaneously sharing them.

You’ll remove every adversary and you’ll beat all competitors. Now is the time to dare and earn. A new proposal will be made to those born in the first decade and, even though it is not fantastic, will give them the opportunity to increase their income. Students will have to work hard in studies. There is likelihood of many deviations like family get-togethers, marriage and travel that could upset their schedule. However, if you study with single-minded devotion and begin preparations for exams, you will not only make the grade but achieve distinctions. You are a good problem solver but may find a small ‘depression’ or disappointment. Adapt a tolerant and forgiving nature; not hard for you but ‘hiding’ how you feel. Be cautious with ‘how you phrase things’ to a spouse, or other family member, especially if it is over money or a spouse is involved. Respect the wishes of parents and in-law over weekend plans.

You must limit your expenses and budget, because you will experience excessive waste throughout the week that might exceed your financial possibilities.
