Romance with Dance
Kathakali dancer Margi Vijaykumar goes down memory lane to share some experiences with us

Margi Vijaykumar performs on stage
Magical Moves: Margi Vijaykumar performs on stage

Coming from a family of government servants and stepping into the world of classical dance, despite family resistance, is not everyone's cup of tea. But such is the story of Margi Vijaykumar. A trained kathakali dancer, there are still members in his extended family who have not seen him transform from a man to a docile woman and take the stage by storm!

In Chandigarh for acquainting the city with the stylized dance-drama from Kerala, Margi Vijyakumar speaks about adding a dash of passion in what he knows best — kathakali.

As we make ourselves comfortable, the presence of a shadow does not go unnoticed. "Vijayakumar only talks in Malayalam. Rajinder Nair will help you translate," we are informed.

Dressed in a simple pant and a check shirt, the reason to believe and trust everything about this performer comes from his simplicity and honesty. Trained under Padma Shri Kalamandalam Krishanan Nair, Today, Vijyakumar is a teacher of the classical dance form at the same place where he was once a student - Margi Kathakali School, Trivandrum. "I was always determined that this is what I want to do all my life," he says with a glint of excitement in his eyes.

Although trained for both male and female roles, the choice for enacting the coy Damanyanthi was perhaps not his. "For a man playing a female on stage was a matter of shame. In my case, it was due to my height that I moulded into female roles," he shares with us. Having developed his own sense of style, Vijayakumar does not mince words when attributing his success to his gurus. "The greatest quality I have learnt from them has been facial expressions, reaching a sense of perfection and dedication to the art," he says. Quickly adding, "It is primarily because of them that my name features in the list of eminent performers." His humility, a scarce commodity today, shines through.

Playing a woman comes with the set of its own problems for this 52-year-old dancer. Gripped in nostalgia, he shares a story, "In 1977, which was the first time I performed, I fainted as the knot in my costume was so tight that my blood circulation stopped." Battling allergic reactions to make-up and putting together his own costume, it's tough to believe that a flawless performance is executed without any rehearsals. "Rehearsals are never important, it's more significant that the artist and the costume blend smoothly on stage," he says.

His fondest memory again reverses the clock. "The year was 2000. We were performing for Sivaji Ganesan and after the performance he said — how beautiful is that lady! The thought is etched in my brain," he says.

So, how does this fine performer define his passion in life? "If you combine all the beauty of the world, kathakali is born," he says. From elaborate costumes, to impeccable dance movements coupled with flawless music in the background and the story of Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavatam and Shiv Puran, it sure is a scintillating canvas of life.

And yes, Rajinder Nair, who very precisely helps is the translation, is a dear friend and a government servant in Kerala!

Is Punjabi music of today bordering on the vulgar? We dig in to find more
Manpriya Singh

At first it's hard to figure out what they are up to - take up cudgels against the increasing vulgarity in Punjabi songs, point fingers at one particular name, rather point fingers at one popular name, hold a press conference to promote their new song National Villager-Face to Face or have come up with a song to be able to talk about International Villager, which happens to be Honey Singh's new album.

Now we are talking or listening! While singer Karran Jesbir aka Jassi Jasraj takes to the microphone, "This song is a reply to all the vulgar songs particularly the very popular ones doing the rounds these days. The rap lyrics are especially vulgar in such songs. It's as if we are dishing out obscenity. Earlier also there used to be songs dealing with first love, the initial rushes of teenage, college life and we had singers like Gurdaas Maan and Chamkile, but the ones doing the rounds on YouTube and Internet these days are crossing the limit."

A couple of allegations flying high in the air, heated discussion, tempers flaring till it almost appears a personal attack on someone doing stupendously well. He clarifies, "Our fight is actually against the attack on our culture. Attacking someone who's the most obscene and who's the most popular seems to be the way out to tame everybody else. Plus there's actually nobody half as blameworthy as him." Chips in Raj Brar, "A lot of people hold me responsible for having introduced Honey Singh to the Punjabi music industry. But that's not true I have introduced so many others as well. So I don't want anybody pointing fingers at me."

The album Zanjeer-The Game Changer had Karran Jesbir and Honey Singh come together. "When we worked together in my album I didn't let him do any indecent rap in my songs." But wouldn't they rather come Face to face in the courts? Take it up through paperwork or public interest litigation? "What comes of these formalities and long-winding processes? Plus we don't think anybody's going to mend his ways because of these measures."

He adds, "People can give thumbs up or thumbs down to anybody's work. It's an appeal to the people to use their judgement carefully and not tune into such vulgar songs." At the end of the day, the ball's in the people's court. Nods singer Harshdeep Kaur, "I haven't really been following Honey Singh's songs, yeah it's bad if kids listen and hum words like Dope Shope all day but why blame only him? There are so many other item songs and lyrics and artistes doing the same and doing really well. You can't stop people from listening or musicians from composing." Singer Honey Singh couldn't be accessed, may be for obvious reasons. Meanwhile, the radio station's tuned into Angrezi Beat. Someone put an asterix on the lyrics but can we help liking it? Not really!

On a dream journey
Sabia Talwar

Rana Daggubati
screen presence: Rana Daggubati

Just one film old in Bollywood (Dum Maaro Dum) and the other one all set to release (Department), Rana Daggubati's journey to stardom has come quite naturally to him. We talk to the tall, dark and handsome guy about his experience till now.

Reel life

I debuted with the Telegu film Leader and won the Filmfare Award for the best male debut. Then Dum Maaro Dum happened. The journey has been quite a learning experience, as I have grown up in that kind of environment and the industry is just like a family to me.

Role call

Compared to Dum Maaro Dum, my role is more noticeable in Department and I feel it is totally my film. It is a police drama where Amitabh Bachchan is a politician and I play a police officer named Shiv Narayan, who whole heartedly works towards making Mumbai a safer place to live in.

Playing cop

We have seen well-toned bodies of Ajay Devgn in Singham and Salman Khan in Dabangg, who played cops; Rana who dons the same look in Department says that he has a physique that is perfect to play a police officer. I had strict agility training and continued my routine work-out as well. And his moustache is an icing on the cake!

Rumour mill

I'm quite used to my link-up with Bipasha Basu and I have learnt to deal with it now. I would still say that Bipasha and I are just friends. But, I'm not single nor am I committed to Bipasha Basu. We just got to know each other very well when we did Dum Maaro Dum and that's about it.

Public figure

Recently, so many celebrities, be it in Hollywood or Bollywood, did not like that their privacy was no longer intact. On the other hand, Rana says that it a celebrity's personal decision to be a public figure, and if they have acquired name and fame it is all because of the fans and media. I still put up in Hyderabad and people there let me live on my own, as they have seen me grow.

Action man

Most of the actors of my age want to do action films and I too love doing stunts. I thank god for giving me such a strong physical appearance, which is the reason why I will always give priority to action-oriented films.

Producer's diary

People may not know but I have been into production of movies for a long time now. I have produced a lot of films till date. As a producer I'm more interested in being a story-teller. I also love giving the visual effects. As for multi-tasking, I will always continue with it.

Future tense

Currently, I'm shooting for an action-adventure movie in Telegu titled 'Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum' and I have also signed for an action movie for Bollywood.

Tie in style
Belts can add a special charm to any outfit. Here’s checking out the latest trends for this season
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Wear them with a tailored suit or over a fitted dress, belts are sure to add a bit of glam to the otherwise, perhaps, boring looking outfit. And belts are sure a hit this season. Here is a quick check.

Right from the safety belt to the utility belt, we see the hip-hugger belt and the very thick, waist-cinching belts that are in vogue. Having been featured prominently in spring collection of many designers, the belts are no more an added accessory to hold the pants but come in curves and designs to follow a woman’s body and accentuate the waist. “We don’t see casual designs in belts anymore, rather they are stylised to match a particular dress,” says designer Sabah Khan. She adds, “Wide-woven leather belts are quite a rage this summer and so is the safety belt style, which comes either in monochromatic or two-toned hues. This type of belt can be paired with an A-line dress for an element of toughness,” she adds.

Another belt that has become a rage with the travellers’ is the utility belt. We saw some of the cheerleaders of IPL in Chandigarh wearing them! It is a weird combination of a belt and a bag, but is definitely a head-turner. A little pouch bag is suspended on a thin slow chain belt and believe us, the belt and bag combo never looked so chic!

Well, if you are looking for more, then we also have the hip-hugger belt. “Low-slung belts always have a carefree charm and hip-hugger belts are one of those. Paired beautifully with wide-leg trousers, they can also be worn with dresses and skirts. Rope belts are another variety to look for,” says an employee of Benetton.

Belt check

n A must-have in your wardrobe is a corset belt. It is a perfect companion for a dress or a gown.

n Rope belt is the hottest trend for the summer season. It’s a tangle of number of ropes into a sailor’s knot.

n Obi belts have been in fashion for quite some time and they are back this season as well.

n Casual belts in varied hues are a wardrobe essential. They never go out of fashion, as they are a requirement than a statement.

Scars can damage one’s self confidence. Here are ways to get rid of these…
Dr Vikas Sharma

Acne scars and surgical scars may be a cause of a person’s emotional or physical pain and affect their quality of life. In severe cases, scars can even limit a person’s mobility.

Scars are areas of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin after injury. Scars in the skin are less resistant to ultra-violet radiation and sweat glands and hair follicles do not grow back within scar tissue.

Types of scars

There are several kinds of scarring, each caused by differing amounts of collagen over expression. Hypertrophic that take the form of a red lump raised on the skin occurs when the body overproduces collagen, which causes the scar to be raised above the surrounding skin. Keloid scars are a more serious form of scarring, because they can carry on growing indefinitely into a large growth.

Keloid scars can be caused by surgery, an accident, by acne or, sometimes, from body piercing. In some people, keloid scars form spontaneously. Although they can be a cosmetic problem, keloid scars are only inert masses of collagen and therefore completely harmless and non-cancerous. However, they can be itchy or painful in some individuals.

An atrophic scar takes the form of a sunken recess in the skin, which has a pitted appearance. These are caused when underlying structures supporting the skin, such as fat or muscle are lost. This type of scarring is often associated with acne, chickenpox, surgery or accidents.

Do away with it

Treatment options for scars include surgical scar revision, laser scar reduction, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, intralesional injections, topical and systemic retinoids. Pressure therapy, injectable agents, cryotherapy, fillers and silicone gel are among the many choices for scar management. The future treatment with an intra-dermal injection of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 3 (TGF?3) is being tested.

Surgical scar reduction procedures are painful and invasive and have a risk for complications. Laser scar reduction offers a non-invasive solution that uses fractional laser technology to deliver rapid, reliable scar reduction with less risk, less pain and minimal downtime.

The fractional laser technology is the latest and important medical discovery which is now becoming the driving power behind acne and surgical scar reduction procedure. The technology uses pulses of laser light to coagulate scar tissue and triggers healthy new tissue to form in patients’ skin. Healing time is minimal, infection risk is eliminated and little to no pain is felt.

Fringe benefits

The technology is also beneficial to some extent for wrinkles, acne and surgical scars, melasma, striae, unwanted textural irregularities, crow’s feet, blotchy skin and more, on virtually any trouble spot on the body - face, neck, chest, arms and legs.

Pet Passion
Come home to your Lab
Manpriya Singh

Whosoever has a pet, has no right to crib and whosoever generally cribs probably has never had a dog to come back home to! The rest can please carry on about bad weather, traffic on roads, lack of time and the like. The best kept reasons for keeping a dog are best left unsaid. Many would rather come back home to a toy than a guard, which is why as much as the dog lovers, the Lab lovers top the statistics.

“We didn’t really need anybody to guard our house. We were looking for someone very friendly, who could be part of the family,” Binny Bains, homemaker, recalls the story behind her light brown Labrador, Brutus. A performance she went and repeated. “My other black Labrador Casper is eight months old. One of my cousins has always kept a Lab because they are the friendliest of breeds.”

It could come from a dog clinic, left by a friend at your doorstep or acquired for any other random reason, but where it came from has got nothing to do with how much you love it.

Love me, love my dog

Whoever said a house is not a home without a dog was perhaps referring to the psychology of a dog lover. Shares Binny Bains, “We first had a Cocker Spaniel called Caesar for 10 years. After he died, it got lonely. Then we went and got ourselves two new pets.” Ever since it’s been a bathing and a brushing routine. “I feed them and brush them myself, it’s one of the first things I do in the morning. The more you take care personally, the more you bond with your pet.” She adds, “May daughter was in Class V when she put her foot down and asked for a dog.”

Yours faithfully

Chips in the daughter Baani Kaur, who is doing a master’s in psychology from Panjab University, “What I really love about the pets in general and about my dog is their strong intuitive power. The day I’m not feeling well or feeling low, they have to make it a point to hover around me with their cute little faces so that I’m neither sad nor lonely any more.”

Then comes the flipside.

There are times when I’m annoyed too. Brutus sits under my table, refuses to come out till I scream and tell him that I need to study.” Shares Binny Bains, “Brutus is always hungry whereas Casper is a poor eater.” If only it ended there. Laughs Baani, “At night, no matter how much you train them, they get on top of my quilt or sheet till it’s so heavy and cannot even be pulled. I have to wake up in the middle of the night and set them right.” All said and done, at the end doesn’t she reduce the species to one of her siblings? “They are actually like my younger brothers. Loyal and adorable.” All arguments put to rest.

Painting a poem

Whatever little time Daljeet Singh gets after a hectic day at work, he devotes it to writing poems and then painting his words, literally. And this is how he expresses his feelings, be it for his hometown Bathinda or his daughter. “Poems lead to paintings. Even the colours and forms that I make are according to the mood set in the poems.”

His latest book, Swapnith comes with a tagline, Daughter is the dream child. “This is my fifth anthology of poems. It’s a tribute to my daughter who turned one on Wednesday. I don’t think that a baby girl is still the dream child of many parents. But the joy that a girl child brings to parents is unparalleled.” The book was released
in an unusual way, not in the form of a usual bound book, but in the form of a calendar. — TNS

Horror doesn’t necessarily mean ghosts...

Neil Nitin Mukesh Neil Nitin Mukesh seems to be on a roll. After bagging the lead role in Bejoy Nambiar’s David, Neil has signed 3G, an Eros International production, his second film in a three-film deal with Eros.

Explaining the film, he said, “3G is a psychological horror with a soul. It’s going to be a tough portrayal. It’s on the lines of What Lies Beneath, Sixth Sense. Horror doesn’t necessarily mean ghosts, I hope you realise that. It’s a genre that reflects thrill fear threat. It’s, in fact, the toughest genre.”

Based on a recent scandal, 3G also stars Sonal Chauhan. Both the actors are busying working on their characters. ‘The next destination is Fiji islands for 3G. Sonal is preparing her look and character and I’m racking my brains over mine,” he added.

In the meantime, his laptop was recently robbed while he was shooting. “I am still upset about my director Binoy and my laptops being robbed from our set. And interestingly, still no support from the cops. Wow!” he added further.

Do your bit…

Abhay Deol Abhay Deol is environmentally sensitive and is the ambassador for India’s first environmental magazine called Green.

The actor who was last seen in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and will be seen in Shanghai tells us how we can do little things for the environment.

Minimise the use of plastic. Return plastic bags to the vendor or carry your own jute or cloth bag when you go grocery shopping. Plastic is not good for people, animals, and the environment. Make a genuine effort and curb its use. What you do, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.

Do not use plastic cups in offices and malls. Carry your own mug or water bottle. Spread this message. Do not be ashamed of caring for the environment. Do not throw garbage or any sort of wrappers on the road or out of your window. Use dustbins.

It is a good idea to walk short distances. Even when I am driving and the signal is long, switch off the car engine. That is what I do. If it is not too hot or dusty, leave the windows open.

At home, it is essential to keep your windows open and let in fresh air and sunlight. It cleanses the environment. Stale air-conditioned air is bad for health and causes many diseases. Spend time outdoors. Do not pluck flowers. Keep plants in your house. Lastly, save electricity and water. Just because we are not charged for water, we should not waste it. Keep the tap slow or turned off while you are brushing your teeth. Turn off the air-conditioning, fans, lights, and any other electrical appliances when you are not in the room.

An insecure, envious star

Marilyn Monroe
Baring all: Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was so desperate to eclipse the popularity of Elizabeth Taylor that she decided to commission a nude photo shoot by the poolside in the 1960s, a new book has revealed. The actress hoped to generate as much publicity as her rival’s public relationship with Richard Burton by baring all. The surprising disclosures come from her conversations with photographer Larry Schiller between 1960 until her death in 1962 at the age of just 36. In his memoir Marilyn And Me, Schiller says that the two met when Monroe hatched a plan to force Hollywood giants Fox Studios to take her more seriously so they would “start paying me as much attention as they are paying to Elizabeth Taylor.”

At the time Taylor was earning 1million dollars a film for epics like Cleopatra, while Monroe was getting paid a mere 100,000 dollars for Something’s Got To Give, from which she was eventually sacked. Monroe posed for a set of photographs in which she entered a swimming pool with a bathing suit and came out naked. “Larry, if I do come out of the pool with nothing on, I want your guarantee that when your pictures appear on the covers of magazines Elizabeth Taylor is not anywhere in the same issue,” Monroe told Schiller. When Hugh Hefner agreed to pay 25,000 dollars for one nude picture Monroe told Schiller that it was worth every penny. She said with a laugh: “There isn’t anybody that looks like me without clothes on.” She told Schiller that she wore her public persona as a ‘veil’ over her real identity.

“It’s still about nudity. Is that all I’m good for? She once said. Over the previous two years the pair had spoken at length and in 1960 she admitted was wracked by insecurity. “I could tell you all about rejection, sometimes I feel my whole life has been one big rejection,” Marilyn said to Schiller. “But look at you now,” he said. “Exactly,” she replied. “Look at me now.” Confused, Schiller protested, “You’re a star! Your face is on magazine covers all over the world! Everyone knows Marilyn Monroe!” “Let me ask you... how many Academy Award nominations do I have?” “I don’t know,” he said. “I do,” she said. “None.” Since her death Monroe’s life has been the subject of endless speculation, not least her rumoured affair with former U.S. President John F Kennedy. Although she never won an Oscar, Monroe did win a Golden Globe for her performance in the 1959 comedy Some Like It Hot. She was married and divorced three times and died childless. — ANI

Actress Scarlett Johansson waves as she poses on her star after it was unveiled on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, California

Hollywood beauty Scarlett Johansson has become the latest celebrity to receive her star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 27-year-old attended the ceremony wearing a figure-hugging dress by British label Preen and was accompanied by her mother Melanie Sloan and grandmother Dorothy Sloan. “I was totally thrilled, of course, because I feel very nostalgic about that kind of thing. It’s a wonderful tradition, and I felt like I finally made it. I really did! I was like, ‘Wow! I’ve been in the industry for 20 years, and I’ve worked since I was a kid.’ It felt like a big milestone,” Johansson said.

Also, present at the event was Jeremy Renner, her co-star from The Avengers. “Working with her was tremendously awful. For six months, she continuously threw me around, beat me, stepped on me and wiped the floor with my dignity and self-respect every day - all with a smile on her face. Now, finally, I get to step on you, sweetheart,” Renner joked. The actress thanked Renner for being her “knight in shining armour,” and praised her mother and grandmother for “inspiring me to be a strong, modern, independent woman.” — PTI

“But if you smell good, I will whip my neck around! “A guy can’t leave until I figure out what scent he’s wearing. I want dudes to smell like when you wake up – you know that smell,” she said.

The Barbadian singer also admitted that she wants to put on weight.

“I’m not careful with what I eat, because I’m trying to gain weight just a little bit,” she said. — ANI

Making the right moves

Geeta Kapoor She’s lovingly called Geeta Ma on the sets of DID L’il Masters. And this year, she is looking for the best talent in the auditions of the second season of the dance reality show for children DID Li’l Masters. Geeta Kapoor talks about her expectations and experiences.

What will be new this season?

Great talent and yet another chance for worthy kids to share a platform that gives them good exposure. Kids who have potential will learn a lot through the show. We have superbly talented kids on the show, even better than season one.

What keeps you coming back to Dance India Dance?

The show feels like my own. DID gave me name and fame. As a choreographer, you get success but with a TV show, the public knows about you and recognises you. People know me personally, which happened only due to DID.

What about parents who force their kids to perform better on a reality show?

I take exception to such parents. I never allow a child to enact anything that could put their health at risk. Like Kaushik Rana, who came to the Kolkata auditions with his mother and a bunch of tube lights in his hand. When I saw the tube lights in his hands, I knew it was trouble. I asked her “How can you expect me to allow such a performance?”

Is reality TV to be blamed?

I find it ridiculous to see the extent to which parents go to ensure that their child gets selected. This is a dance reality show for kids. I do not see any reason why there should be acts that could endanger the kids’ safety, health and overall well-being.

How are the marriage proposals coming along?

Ever since the last season of Dance India Dance, when it was made public that I am unmarried, it’s amazing to see viewers’ interest across all cities to marry me off. It is so embarrassing! Why don’t people understand that I will get married when I find the right man.

What about risqué moves that kids make on to the show?

That is the choreographer and parents job. They should look into it. —HRM

New Release
Jannat 2

Producers: Mahesh Bhatt, Mukesh Bhatt

Director: Kunal Deshmukh

When Producers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt make a film, the viewers love to watch it. Their films speak of life, love and truths in a different way and that is what makes audiences remember Jannat. Now Jannat 2, the follow-up of the 2008 box-office hit,Jannat deals with illegal arms trade.

We assume Kunal Deshmukh’s directed Jannat 2 will be a perfect drama. Plus it has newbie Esha Gupta in the lead.

Randeep Hooda who played a cop in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, essays a similar role in this film.

Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai were considered for the role of leading lady. However, the model-turned-actor Esha Gupta bagged the main lead. She is romantically paired with Emraan Hashmi in this film. She transforms Emraan from a rogue to an honest man.

Judging by the promos it looks to be a very different film. Rest, it’s for viewers to decide. — Dharam Pal

The year ahead

If your birthday is May 4...

Sudden unexpected expenses might exert financial pressure. You will find it extremely difficult to handle people who try to pull you down. New proposals will be alluring but it will not be wise to take any hasty decisions. Avoid overeating and keep a check on your weight. Your partner seems to be too busy for you. This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if you hadn’t noticed how they can still find time for their friends. If anyone is keeping secrets from you, they’re going to find it hard not to reveal them when you inquire about them. Don’t get carried away by others’ creative flights of fancy.

This year, keep in mind that by not being so scared of the future, you’ll have the strength to take really important decisions for the future. If you are self employed, you won’t be very helpful towards others and will seek time alone. Avoid taking risks.

Students will get serious about their education and those who will pay attention to their studies will see themselves doing exceptionally well. Those appearing for their board examination can work towards achieving good grades. You must attend family functions like weddings, parties and funerals.

You must show a bit more wisdom concerning material values without ruling out your importance from your life, but not focusing most of your energy on them either. Some of you will make spiritual or intellectual investments, while others will understand how much money they have wasted and how they could rehabilitate themselves financially.

This may be one of those ‘the less said the better’ years where unless a friend comes to you with a problem, it would be wise to keep inquiries to yourself. Plan fun events and gatherings with buddies for best results. Bad mood, anxiety, lack of rest, and most importantly, lack of concern will cause disturbance. Mars has been encouraging you to manage your time, but that’s soon eclipsed by the restless energies coming in. Mood: Emotionally cautious. Compatible signs: Aries, Libra. Lucky colours: Green and off-white. Lucky days: Wednesday and Saturday. Lucky numbers: 2, 9, 17, 29, 70. Lucky gem: Rock crystal. Lucky flower: White tulip.
