Poisonous gases claim labourer’s life
Chandigarh, April 20
Cleaning a manhole proved fatal for a 25-year-old labourer in Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, as he died after inhaling poisonous gases after falling into the 10-foot-deep pit today. A Fire Brigade tender pulled him out, but the labourer had died by then.

Warm send-off for Justice Gogoi
Chandigarh, April 20
The outgoing Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, was today accorded a warm send-off. Justice Gogoi has been elevated to the Supreme Court and is scheduled to be administered oath as the apex court judge on Monday. He remained the Chief Justice of this High Court for nearly 14 months.

Law and order situation has collapsed in UT, says ex-MP Jain

Satya Pal Jain, former MP and all-India incharge of the Legal and Legislative Wing of the BJP, has urged the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to visit Chandigarh, assess the law and order situation in the city, take corrective measures, and restore the confidence of the common man in the local administration and the law enforcing agencies.

MC committee to study house tax structures in different states

The municpal corporation has taken a step ahead in the direction of levying house tax in the city. A house tax assessment committee in its meeting today has decided to study the house tax structures in cities of different states where the tax is already imposed. A report in this regard is also supposed to be tabled in the next meeting of committee.

Dera Bassi to get 2 fire tenders
Zirakpur, April 20
After the fire incident at Pabhat godown area, the Zirakpur Municipal Council has decided to buy two fire tenders that would be handed over to the Dera Bassi fire station. One will be stationed at sewerage and water supply office in Zirakpur for 24 hours said Dera Bassi MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary, NK Sharma, during the monthly council meeting, here today.

Police beefs up security
Zirakpur, April 20
The local police, today, laid special checkpoints and checked the vehicles to keep a tab on the activities of anti-social elements due to the ongoing IPL matches at Mohali. The Zirakpur SHO, Tarlochan Singh, said that the police teams laid nakas at all the intersections and internal roads to check the suspected vehicles. He said that the nakas were mandatory to keep vigil on anti-social elements.

The Hindi play by Irshad Kamil is a beautiful amalgamation of poetry and prose.

First-ever Govt Smart School to open on April 23
Chandigarh, April 20
After a prolonged delay, the UT’s first ever government smart school will open its gates for students on April 23. Advisor to the UT Administraor KK Sharma will inaugurate the Sector 53 school whose inauguration has been postponed four times since last November.

Students and teachers of St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32 C, celebrated the completion of 25 years of service of three of their staff members - King Kennedy, physical instructor, Alice and Ameena, both primary school teachers. Father Thomas , principal Sister Gracy Jose and vice principal Sister Anne presided over the function. Students presented an medley of song and dance during the function. One held in child sodomy case
Chandigarh, April 20
The police arrested one person in a child sodomy case. The accused Rajinder aka Raju, a resident of Nepal, sexually assaulted an eight-year-old boy twice in a forest near Kansal, said police. The accused is said to be a neighbour of the victim, who resides at Khuda Ali Sher.

Rape allegation against PGI doc
Chandigarh, April 20
A 27-year-old girl has levelled allegations of rape against a resident doctor of PGI here today. The girl, hailing from Himachal Pradesh, said on April 16 she reached PGI for her treatment related to gall bladder ailment. The doctor took her to his hostel on the pretext of clinical tests and he raped her, alleged the girl in her complaint. The doctor even threatened to commit suicide, she alleged.

One arrested in teacher thrashing case

The Mohali police has arrested one student in a ‘teacher thrashing’ case at Chandigarh Group of Colleges’ in Landran, here today. The student, Ajay Garg, arrested is a resident of Mansa.

2 arrested in maidservant scam
Panchkula, April 20
In a case pertaining to duping a local resident by a maidservant and her employer, the police has arrested two accused namely Deepu Dass alias John Mony and Radhika both belonging to Assam. The accused had been staying at New Delhi, said the police.
