Designs on change
Pradyumna Vyas, director of India’s premier institute, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, feels design is not merely a synonym for luxury but can change lives in ways not imagined
Nonika Singh

Art and design… the link is self-evident. Yet the key difference between the two, elaborates Pradyumna Vyas, director of India’s premier institute, National Institute of Design (NID, Ahmedabad is, “while art is for self-expression, in designing we must bear in mind that we are creating it for others.” In Chandigarh at the invitation of Government College of Art at whose Diamond Jubilee convocation he will be the chief guest on Friday, however, he goes on to stress upon the significance of art and aesthetics in design.

In fact, without aesthetics, he feels, human existence itself is pointless. In the world of design, he informs, there is both form and function. And depending on the stream, one takes precedence over the other. In fashion design, for instance, he asserts, what it looks like will be more important and in medical equipment what it does will be an imperative. The significance of design in India, he agrees, has neither been tapped nor fully understood. He says, “While in China the number of design institutes would run in thousands, in India the number is barely in double figures, 40 at the most.” NID incidentally will be setting up four of its kind. What makes the institute a cut above the rest is the emphasis on practical education and multidisciplinary approach.

Himself an IITian, he doesn’t think science or engineering is more important in industrial design, rather as puts it as, “we need to snap out of compartmentalization and realise it’s an amalgamation of all.” Little wonder then, textile designers are now finding employment in automobile sectors. He dismisses the suggestion that there are more female students in fashion design and quips, “Anyway we call our course apparel design, as it not only encompasses fashion but other areas like say uniforms for fire fighters or the police.”

Design, he is 100 per cent positive, is not an elitist concept as is erroneously perceived but something that concerns all. In fact, he stresses on the need to make design relevant for all strata of society, particularly those at the bottom of the pyramid.

He is emphatic that design does cater to the market and in an innovation-led economy where people are looking for choices you need to add value to the product. But at the same time, he argues, strongly, “We must also work towards a model of human development, which is sustainable.” To move away from “more and more, the use and throw” consumerist ethos and to focus on crafts, on inexpensive gadgets that could make the life of rural populace better, is what he hopes to drive in among his students at the NID. In a world where design is considered a synonym for luxury, his ideas may seem utopian.

But as this Member Secretary, India Design Council, who would rather be an agent of change than be swept away by market forces, reminds us, “Design is a vision of future, of tomorrow.” And he has designs to take the concept of inclusive development forward.

Life on the fashion street
New York-based designer Kanika Saluja, having made outfits for the likes of Madonna, is upbeat about the adjustable nature of the younger generation
Manpriya Singh

Fashion is a fever. New York-based Kanika Saluja caught it head on and as she likes to put it, “eats, breathes, sleeps, dreams, lives fashion.” “Even if I’m going to buy vegetables, I’d like to look my best and that is what fashion means to me.” Having defined the concept, from here on it’s purely an inspiration-based endeavour for her. The designer and her dreams take on!

“At least in the West, the concept is that you go to a place, study it and its people; explore the customer city-wise, before coming up with anything.” So the ‘city and its people’ bring her on a maiden visit to Chandigarh. “I’m a Punjabi. It might sound strange but that’s the reason I’m here first.” Punjab, Hyderabad, Chennai follow. “Delhi and Mumbai are saturated. The thing about these markets is that the entire generation is excited; it’s adaptable to what you have to share with them. It’s the freshness that excites me.”

Having managed the label Nikka From New York, been in the industry for a decade-and-a-half, it’s the tag ‘debutante’ she was stuck with at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. “Yes, everybody kept asking me about the debut thing, which was very strange.” The label Nikka as she likes to put it - “was for the age bracket of nineteen to thirty-five.” Whereas it targeted ‘mid twenties to forty five’ people!

Getting the buyers wasn’t a big thing. “It was like literally for five days I didn’t have time to even sit down. If your product is good, it is going to sell. I believe that the production should be better than the sampling.” Her clothes were talked about as much as her showstopper. “I didn’t pay Chitrangada Singh. It was her graciousness. She saw my line and went, ‘I’m doing it’ and I decided the outfit for her and everything.” She adds, “She’s dark and sultry and I like women with that skin tone. She’s the next woman I like after Smita Patil.”

It’s high time she dropped in Madonna, for whom she did The Superbowl outfits. “Some of the most fashionable people wouldn’t even wear all the big labels, in fact, they wear vintage. She’s just one such person. And she’s been my favourite throughout.”

It could all be slow or at supersonic speed, but certain creative things have got to be your way. “I’m open to designing for Bollywood, but they got to accept the designs as they are. I don’t do commercial stuff, we don’t use Swarovski; we would rather use metal.” On the cards is her label store Anaikka, in Delhi. Meanwhile, she could be “maybe coming up with a line for Chihuahuas.” There’s already spring summer collection 2013 in the pipeline, which is “Roman and Greek inspired.” We leave her with the muses!

Beauty at its best...

Style file: Shraddha Kapoor She is pretty, funky, cute, stylish, dreamy and slim. Porcelain-skinned Shraddha Kapoor sparkled in Luv Ka The End. She also models for popular fashion and make-up brands. The slim and tall beauty talks about style, good looks, staying fit, and more.

Chic chick

My style is very Bohemian and comfortable. I love colours, and dress according to my mood. I like fashion, but I don’t follow trends. I love to shop everywhere, whether it is at Colaba Causeway or the high street boutiques in London. Lately, I love shoes from Gucci. I purchased a grey and purple bag from Miu Miu and that has become my favourite.

Must haves

I think a pair of well-fitted jeans, a versatile jacket, a pair of black stilettos, a versatile day-and-night bag, a dress, tank, tee and shirt in white, Converse shoes and flip-flops are wardrobe must-haves. Yes, do some form of exercise whether Yoga or going to the gym to fit into your clothes!

Make-up kit

I love colourful make-up. I use eye make-up from MAC, foundation from Bobbi Brown and Chanel and lip and cheek tint from Benetint. Vaseline is a must-have. It is very important to remove every trace of make-up before sleeping.

Hair care

I use a hair-pack made of aloe vera, hibiscus leaves or flowers and curd. You need to mix aloe vera juice or gel with the dried hibiscus leaves and curd and coat your hair with the mixture. Keep it on for twenty minutes and rinse it off with water. The cooling and nourishing pack leaves your hair incredibly soft, smooth and shiny.

Eye talk

Everything in our lives is visual, and our eyes are the first senses that get stimulated. To relax and refresh your eyes, close them and place chilled cucumber slices on them. It is an incredibly relaxing eye-spa in itself. —HRM

Back where she belongs

Karisma Kapoor is all set to make her comeback in Dangerous Ishq. She talks about the movie and motherhood.

Kiddy stuff

Samaira and Kiaan have grown up a little and don’t need me around all the time. Samaira is not interested in Bollywood at all. She only saw Housefull 2 recently. She now understands that her mother and massi are actresses and that is why we are sort of famous. She will see what her mother did before she was born. She likes being on the sets. I took five months to get back in shape after Kiaan. You cannot be prepared for motherhood. You learn on the job.

Rolling on

I have done women-centric roles earlier in my career such as Fiza, Shakti, Zubeidaa, and a few others. I enjoyed my challenging role in Dangerous Ishq. Vikram Bhatt has fine tuned the script and I enjoyed acting after so many years. It is the only thing I know how to do. I have been acting since 16 so I have grown up with it.

Fashion fiesta

Earlier, we did not have so much exposure. We wore what the director asked us to wear and people knew us from that. In personal life, I have always dressed in a particular way and now people get to see more of our personal photos because there are events. I cannot discount Manish Malhotra’s contribution to my style evolution. I love wearing solid colours. Now everybody has resources and exposure and style is an aspect of your film career.

Heroine not being launched at Cannes

Ever since Kareena Kapoor accepted Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine, she hasn’t come face-to-face with Aishwarya Rai who let go of the film after announcing her pregnancy last year. And if you remember the film was unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival with much fanfare.

Double trouble: Kareena Kapoor and Madhur BhandarkarHowever, recently there were rumours of Madhur planning to launch the first look of Heroine at Cannes Film Festival this year with Kareena. What fueled the rumours even more was Arjun Rampal’s statement where he said that the film deserves to be launched at the festival.

But Bhandarkar broke his silence and decided to put the rumours to rest. “Media reporting that first look of Heroine is going to be launched in Cannes are baseless,” he said.

Reason being is Heroine’s ongoing shooting schedule. “Me, Kareena and the whole team are busy shooting Heroine throughout the month of April and May, so no question of visiting Cannes,’ he added. Nonetheless, Bollywood celebrities like Aishwarya Rai, Arjun Rampal, Bipasha Basu, and Sonam Kapoor are expected to attend the international film festival this year.

‘Together’ by contract

Twilight stars: Robert Pattinson and Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart can only appear together at Twilight themed red carpet events, because of a clause written in their contracts. The on and off screen couple - who star alongside each other in the vampire franchise - reportedly have a clause written in their contracts preventing them appearing at any other red carpet event together.

Pattinson was seen alone at the premiere of Paul McCartney’s video to his latest song My Valentine in Los Angeles last week. “One reason Robert was on his own was he didn’t want to make it the Kristen and Rob show and take away from the actual event. They also have a clause in their Twilight contracts that they can only appear together at a Twilight themed red carpet together. “Twilight kind of owns some of their appearances they do together until Breaking Dawn: Part 2 is one hundred per cent completed,” a source said. The filming on Breaking Dawn: Part 2 isn’t over yet and both Pattinson, who plays vampire Edward Cullen, and Stewart, who portrays his wife, Bella Swan, have been recalled to Canada to shoot some “technical” scenes for the film. Breaking Dawn: Part 2 is set to be in cinemas this November. — PTI

Out of the scene

Nargis Fakhri has actually replaced Ileana D’Cruz in Khiladi 786. The former created (and continues to create) a lot of buzz around Rockstar and her link ups with Ranbir and Shahid. Ileana has hardly created any buzz for Barfee as the limelight is on Priyanka and Ranbir.

Acting pricey

the South who makes his Bollywood debut with the remake of Zanjeer is reportedly being paid more than INR 9 crore to do the film. Amitabh Bachchan met with him recently.

A simple, dimpled approach...
Jasmine Singh

When it comes to Bollywood, the biggest challenge, other than being seen on the silver screen and parties regularly, is how to deal with rumours. Just about everyone in this industry, right from Big B to King Khan, Shah Rukh, had to once or even more than once spare their time to deal with rumours. While some take it in their stride and move on, others end up in a press conference (read Vivek Oberoi) and some like actors Preity Zinta smile and move ahead with grace as well as poise.

In Chandigarh to cheer her team Kings XI Punjab, the actress has seen, heard and dealt with rumours the way she has with fame. The dimpled beauty, laughing over it, says, “People have been saying some amazing things about me but I don’t give weightage to these. I believe if I have to live according to my own terms, I have to deal with rumours”.

Better said than done; for sure rumours do perturb people whether they are spicy stories in the office or the usual saas bahu ones, is it easy dealing with them? Preity smiles, flashes her dimples, “I can handle criticism easily if only it is constructive. I can’t sit and brew over something someone has said.” All set to cheer her team, she says, “Have you seen the boys, they should be doing well.” Preity Zinta hasn’t changed a bit in her attitude; she carries the same liveliness still. “When I did IPL for the first time, people said that I didn’t have any movies to do. Now when I have movies lined up, they say I am missing from IPL. How do you want me to react to this?” she questions.

The actress is really serious. No matter what she does, the rumour mill has enough grit to grind. “I want to make it absolutely clear that whatever I do in life, I do because I want to. No one forces anything upon me. I am in IPL because I want to and I would do movies again because I like doing them. I was the top actress when I decided to take on the responsibility of Kings XI Punjab, so there is no reason for people to say whatever they are saying.”

All’s well that ends well. We don’t know how the season five fares for Preity and her team, but she is definitely going strong in Bollywood. We see her eyes light up, she is excited talked about her project, “I will start shooting with Salman Khan very soon and then I have Ishq in Paris releasing on September 21.” She is quick to add, “I am doing things because I am a free-willed person; educated and financially settled.” She gets into the car waiting for her in the parking lot, smiles and waves a good bye. Nothing stops in life, all you have to do is flash a dimpled smile and move on!

Word Wise
Writing doesn’t take time, ‘what’ to write takes all the labour, says Irshad Kamil in Chandigarh with his play Bolti Deewarein
Mona

Each one of us is in a mad rush, too occupied in getting somewhere…but ‘where’ is a question that one seldom asks.

Noted lyricist Irshad Kamil’s recent play Bolti Deewarein addresses this very question. “We say love cheated us, but the fact is it’s us who are cheating love,” says Irshad, in Chandigrah for a play reading session organised by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi on Thursday.

“What makes love great is the truthfulness to the emotions,” says Irshad. It’s not the death that makes it heroic or every one of the pairs that get reported in news snippets are another Heer Ranjha or Sohni Mahiwal. “Human beings are no scientific formula, though there is an attempt to reduce them to that. What’s love is for you, it might not be for others,” says Irshad. So, each one has to figure out love’s own meaning. Also, this meaning changes over a period of time. The key is to ‘rediscover’ it again. The ‘glossy’ love, as depicted by the cinema or literature, traps us, preventing us from finding real love. “Bolti Deewarein is one such relentless search for the inherent character of love and real mettle of human relationship,” says this playwright, actor, script-writer and director.

His play has already been staged in Delhi and has been received pretty well. What makes this prolific lyricist not too happy is how choreographers sometimes treat his works.

“As a writer, I try to detach myself from my work. I keep any of my work for a day or two. I revisit it if it needs any fine tuning and after giving it, move over,” says Irshad who knows pretty well how to get over a creation before creating something new.

“No one is competing against another. All the competition is with the self,” says the self-assured writer who has found his niche in big, Bollywood world. With films like Chameli, Jab We Met, A Wednesday, Love Aaj Kal, Atithi Tum Kab Jayoge, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Rockstar and Desi Boys, and, Filmfare, Star Screen and GIMA awards under his belt, Irshad is not ready to compromise on his kind of work.

“Market forces are on work and I don’t say that I wouldn’t do a Munni Badnam Hui but main Munniko apne tarike se use badnaam karunga,” says the lyricist who has penned the so
called ‘item’ numbers Le Teri Ho Gayi Yaar Sajna Ve Sajna and Katiyan Karoon.

(The play reading is on Friday at Tagore Theatre-18. Time 6:30 pm)

the ‘in’ side
Height of illusion
Sukhmani

Rooms with low ceilings can pose a bit of a challenge while decorating. Don’t give up, there are a few tricks you can use to create an illusion of more ceiling height.

* Painting the ceiling a lighter colour or white will create an illusion of a higher ceiling. Another trick is to paint the first 3-4 inches of the ceiling surrounding the wall, the same colour as the wall, although tricky, it adds height to the walls. Yet another trick is to paint the walls and the ceiling the same colour.

* Stick to light shades while decorating such rooms.

* Keep away from decorative ceilings. This will only make the room look smaller.

* Use vertical stripes in wallpaper or a decorative paint treatment can help draw the eye upward, lengthening the look of the wall.

* Paint the room in two shades using a ‘sponging’ or ‘bagging’ technique with the darker shade at the bottom, gradually moving to the lighter shade near the ceiling. This creates the visual effect of a high ceiling.

* Use floor-to-ceiling window treatments to emphasise the height.

* Install art on the walls vertically, and hang them higher than the standard height.

* Use sleek and low slung furniture pieces. Upholstery should not be bold or too detailed.

* Go for a bold flooring option or an eye-catching rug. This will take the attention off the ceiling.

* Use light fixtures that throw light upwards. This will make the ceiling look higher.

* Use mirrors to create a three dimensional effect by staggering them at various heights.

Pet Passion
Love me, love my dog
Manpriya Singh

Sowmya(R) with Ginger Apprehensive mother, enthusiastic children. The rest as they say is history. You could have got it on the pretext of pet sitting for a friend. Or, one of the fresh litters followed you no end, till you decided not to end it ever. It’s one of the gifts you don’t return to your ex even after an ugly break-up. Sometimes interesting, sometimes endearing, there’s a story behind each pet. Reason enough for us to get to you one each week.

Everlasting bond

This one’s no different than the most but special nevertheless. Sowmya, third year student, Chandigarh College of Architecture, recalls the story behind her chocolate brown Labrador, Ginger. “We went to a dog show, when I was in Class IX and that’s when we got after our parents, asking them to get us a pet. Our father had to give in.” Reluctant mother notwithstanding! She adds, “Our mother was a little apprehensive of things like who would take care of it. But finally we got a two-week-old chocolate brown labrador home.”

As much as the breed and the baby, there’s a story behind each name. “It’s called Ginger, for no other reason but the fact that my younger sister refused to call him anything else.” And it’s been six years of togetherness and counting. She laughs, “He’s friendly, in fact over friendly. At times, we joke around in the house that even if a thief came Ginger would lick him to death and drive him out.” The list of quirks has only got started.

“One thing I love about him is when I come back from college, he jumps around and gets so excited and gives such a warm welcome, even if I sometimes ignore him.” She adds, “and yes, he understands Hindi, English, spoken language, recognises words. It’s almost like he’s got his own vocabulary.” Then follow the unending expressions. “He lifts his ears, curls up his brows, lies down, rolls over, almost everything has got it meaning.”

Yours faithfully

A wagging tail, eyes wide open and dedication spilling through every move, it doesn’t get more endearing than that. There’s no picture of companionship better than the dog and the master pairing. Yet there are times. She adds, “He doesn’t understand the weather, rains or sunshine. He has to be taken for a walk. You take him out and he’s ready to jump at other dogs. At times that gets annoying.” Then come the visits to the dog clinic. “I literally have to hold him when we take him for visits to the dog clinic since he gets excited and restless.” She sums up, “But at the end of it, it’s worth it.” And it’s time for her to go and play with the dog. The endless diaries of a pet owner!

HEART talk
Balance love, friendship
Parvesh Rana

I’m a twenty-five-year-old girl and seeing a guy since two years now. I’m very happy with him, but the only problem I face is when he tells me to stop talking to a best male friend of mine who happens to drink and smoke a lot. How do I make him understand that I can’t break my ten-year-old friendship just like that?

— Ritu, Chandigarh

If you claim that you are best friends with this guy you should tell him to lessen his drinking and smoking activity. How do you expect the love of your life to compromise on the fact of you hanging out with someone who is not even in his senses for most time of the day? Balance your love relation and your friendship

I’m a twenty-year-old and have been dating a college mate of mine since two years. But now I feel that he has lost interest in me and doesn’t love me anymore. He says that loving me was the biggest mistake of his life. I don’t know the reason behind this sudden change but am sure he isn’t seeing any other woman. How should I make this relation work?

— Shuchi, Ludhiana

First of all, ask him clearly whether he wants this relation to go on or not. Also, make yourself understand that you are not worth all the tears and pain he is giving you. Always remember the best times you spent with him and if his ultimate decision is to leave you, let him go.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is April 20...

Financial limitations might land you in depression. You will make some extra cash if you play your cards well. Evenings with friends will be good for pleasure as well as some holiday planning. Sudden romantic encounters may be foreseen. Travel undertaken for business purpose will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

Your confidence and energy will be high. Watch your tendency to live and to spend too much on entertainment. Artists and working women will find  the year highly productive. News should be verified if you are in any media to avoid libel or legal actions.

You’ve got the advantage even if it’s just attitudinal. Smile and the world will smile with you — let somebody else deploy the annoying squeaky-wheel tactic. You’ll need the goodwill you’ve generated, when the sheer volume of work is a major stressor and some top-down stuff truly isn’t helping matters. Stars indicate that luck is on your side and some of the demanding projects, which are underway will soon be successful.

Students must not waste time wondering, waiting, or wandering in a search of subtle clues.  Instructions will be signaled loud and clear.  You will know the time for the next move.  For now, the interim serves as spiritual respite.  Don’t stay up too late at night!

You appear to have several discussions, especially where changes need to be made and where spending may be talked over, especially with children and teens. The Venus may have you feeling a bit worn out and you may need to call upon family for assistance. Good luck in finances will continue. Some of you may have unsteady thoughts and should avoid unconventional deployment of funds.

New investment in areas other than property should be avoided. Friends will understand if you want to cut time to accommodate a love interest or a career opportunity. Travel may be necessary this week and friends may be helpful in attending domestic affairs while you are away. Health won’t be that good. You can feel so much like a pal to your partner that the romantic magic starts to fade. Sharing your thoughts may seem risky, but it is better than silence.
