Tube-wells to pump water into Sukhna
As groundwater level in this area is high, admn believes this would help in restoring the lake to its normal level
Chandigarh, April 15
To save city’s landmark Sukhna Lake, the UT Administration has come up with a proposal to construct deep bore tube-wells near Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary to utilise groundwater.

574 govt houses to have solar water heating systems
Chandigarh, April 15
In an important development on the Chandigarh Administration's model project on solar energy, as many as 574 government houses situated in Sectors 7 and 16 will soon adorn solar water heating systems. Currently solar plant installations are being put up on important buldings, but the programme seems to have been expanded to the housing sector, as the UT is thinking about energy alternatives in the wake of the soaring power demand and dwindling supply. Besides rotational power cuts in the past, the residents these years are already complaining about unscheduled cuts in the beginning of the summer season.

2 booked while cheating in SSC exam
Chandigarh, April 15
The UT police booked two persons who were caught cheating during the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exam held in Government School Sector 23 here today. The two were caught cheating in separate cases and while one was arrested, the other managed to flee from the examination centre.

After two days of inclement weather, exhibitors heaved a sigh of relief, as a large number of people from the tricity converged at the parade ground in Sector 5 here today. The exhibition witnessed heavy rush as Sunday has become a perfect setting for visitors, families and people coming from the nearby towns to have a rare glimpse and feast of India’s tradition, art, culture and food available through the seven zonal cultural centres of the country, which are celebrating the silver jubilee of zonal cultural centres at the venue.

Authorities still in slumber
Mohali, April 15
Accident on every second day at some non-functional traffic light points in the city has failed to wake up the authorities. A three-year-old girl, Anmol, died yesterday, following a collision between an auto-rickshaw and a speedy vehicle at the Radha Soami Chowk traffic light point and six persons got hurt in an accident between Cielo car and Swaraj Mazda at the Chawla light point in Phase VII on April 13.

Induction ceremony
Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) today held an induction ceremony for new members at the PHD House, Sector-31. The event was held to formally induct around 50 new individual and 10 new organisational members. Dr Anshu Kataria, president, CMA, and chairman, Aryan Group of Colleges, honoured the new members by giving them welcome kits. Manoj Kumar Sharma, vice president, Madhulika Kak, secretary general, AK Gandhi, chairman, membership committee were also present on the occasion.

Mohali, April 15
As many as 61,466 children have been administered polio drops on the first day of the three-day pulse polio drive, which was launched today in the district. During the drive, about 1.32 lakh children under the age of five years would be administered the dose, claimed officials.

Fed up with the failure of the Municipal Corporation in providing efficient sanitation services in Sector 21, as a mark of protest, the residents took up brooms to clean the streets today. A number of residents cleaned the filth and garbage scattered in the adjoining parks to awaken the authorities of the corporation from their slumber.

Misuse of water: 60 issued notices
Chandigarh, April 15
On the first day of the implementation of the ban on misuse of water during the morning hours, the Municipal Corporation issued notices to 60 residents in the city for not adhering to the instructions.

The Centre has granted a three-year extension to Dr JS Samra, CEO, National Rainfed Area Authority( NRAA), Planning Commission.

Car of Judicial Magistrate collides with another vehicle
Chandigarh, April 15
High drama was witnessed in Sector 22 when the Zen car belonging to Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amit Sharma collided with another car. The accident occurred near the health centre in the same sector. A heated scuffle ensued between both the parties soon after the accident. The police immediately reached the spot and talked to both the parites. The Magistrate was reportedly driving the Zen car at the time of accident. Later, a compromise was reached between both the parties.

More than 70 professors await promotions in city colleges

The confusion over the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules to be followed has led to a delay in promotions of more than 70 assistant and associate professors under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) working in different city colleges for last two years.

National Olympiad winners awarded

The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) organised a felicitation function to award the winning students, teachers and principals from the region. Among those awarded, two were from Kurukshetra and Nagal who had topped National Science Olympiad and National English Olympiad. They received grand prize of Rs 1lakh.

Lalru sans bus stand
Lalru, April 15
People wait for buses near the national highway at Lalru Though Lalru has received a status of nagar panchayat and industrial units and educational institutions have been set up here on a large scale, it lacks a bus stand, which causes a lot of trouble to commuters. There were no sitting arrangements for commuters. A Lalru resident, Krishan Gupta, said in the absence of the bus stand, the commuters stand in open and sometimes felt prone to accidents.

Man held on charge of fraud

The police today arrested a man on charge of defrauding a person of Rs 22,000 on the pretext of getting his ward admitted to St John’s School, Sector 26.
The police arrested Varun Das in a case of cheating registered at the Sector 11 police station.

Mohan Singh, Kanika victorious
Chandigarh, April 15
Col Mohan Singh and Kanika Minocha won in the men’s and women’s category, respectively, of the Independence Day Golf Cup held at Chandigarh Golf Club here today. In the longest drive event, Tarundeep Singh Chadha won in the age group 0-60 years with a 313-yard shot while in the age group 61-75 years, GS Harika hit the ball to 212 yards to emerge victorious in the category. In the age group 75 years and above Capt JS Sahi won the top honours hitting the ball to 185 yards.

Parnav clinches u-10 title

Parnav Chopra today claimed the title of the boys’ (u-10) category in the ongoing Manav Mangal Total Tennis Championship being played at Phase X, Mohali, here.
In a three-set clash against his rival Uday Veer Singh, Parnav won the the first set easily but Uday came back in the game and won the second set without dropping a game by 4-0. The match then went to the decider where Parnav managed to win the final by 7-3 in a tiebreaker.

In the ongoing three-match cricket tourney organised at the cricket stadium of Sector 16 here, the team of Mohali defeated Fathegarh Sahib by 74 runs today.
After electing to bat first, the winning side scored 309 runs losing five wickets in 50 overs. Abhijeet Singh scripted the team’s win with 95 runs off 102 balls. He was ably supported by Manul and Pukhraj who scored 58 off 67 and 50 off 28 respectively.
