Like a dream..
Vanya Mishra, gathering the pixie dust of Pantaloons Femina Miss India, comes home to a warm welcome

Beauty queen: Vanya Mishra
Beauty queen: Vanya Mishra

The blinding shimmer of the tiara. The dazzling smile. The pride. The glimmer of reaching the stars. An uncanny resemblance to Chitrangada Singh. The exact things dreams are made of! A fine example of making it big in the beauty world, Vanya Mishra, Pantaloons Femina Miss India, returns home to Chandigarh on Tuesday. Dressed in a body-hugging pink strapless outfit, the young engineer-in-the-making looked every bit of a new-born star.

In JW Marriott for the unveiling the new beauty pack of a leading cosmetic company, Vanya speaks her heart out about the love for Chandigarh and how her luck shone through in the pageant. “Since I was a wild-card entry, being in competition with some of the prettiest girls of India was not easy,” she says, still immersed in the charm of winning the crown. Having proved herself very well, she does not forget to thank her family for support. “Mom made me participate and applied for me online,” she says.

Of course, if it’s the newly crowned young Miss India, the talk of the next step cannot be ignored. Stepping up soon for the international pageant, she has just one word. “The pageant is ultimately all about confidence.” Certain about the win, she does not mind talking about what kept her going all through. “Femina guides very well. Particularly in terms of improving diction, walking, taking care of the hair, skin and the works,” she says, flipping her hand to set her asymmetrical fringe.

As the shutterbugs go berserk, the lady keeps her calm on the anxiety around the international event. “The kind of time I have is very little, it’s in August and my judges have already told me they see potential in me,” she shares with us. All set to adopt new methods and train harder, she is not certain about the clichéd entry into Bollywood. “I still haven’t completed my education,” she laughs and leaves us to mull on the thought of a brainless beauty. In her third year of engineering, she will definitely wrap that up before moving forward. “I haven’t tried acting, but yes, Indian cinema is very talented, so let’s see what comes up next,” she smiles ear-to-ear.

Coming from a small town has had its own little appeal. “Harbhajan Singh was one of the judges and I recall him telling me that people from small towns have little probability of winning, but Chandigarh has a lot of talent. People here don’t need to be encouraged and are ready to come up in different fields.” On her resemblance to the hottest star today, Chitrangada Singh, she says, “I have lost count of how many people have compared me to her,” she laughs. It sure is the one compliment that makes the girl happy!

“I am glad I made everyone proud,” she says. Though the first thought has been clouded with flashbulbs, the feeling will surely stay forever. Shouldering a big responsibility, she agrees that she may not have the best body or the walk, but she sure has all the confidence in the world to shoulder the responsibility. And the vibrancy vanishes behind the curtain, taking care of her fragile tiara and her equally fragile persona.

Success story

Walking the ramp is like a dream, but Vanya does not forget the toil. “We were just asked random questions during the preparation. It took some wit and smartness to answer,” she gleams with pride. Now that her one ambition is complete, she is in the right position to tell her friends that Miss Worlds are not from an alien world.

Master touch
His designs stand out, so does his clientele. Designer Tarun Tahiliani is ready with another prêt collection for Ludhiana folks
Ashima Batish

Visual Delight: Creations by Tarun Tahiliani

From ancient times, people have tried to find the answer to the most difficult philosophical question - who’s bigger-the product or the person behind it, the creation or the creator? Almost on the same lines, we wonder about the precise definition of genius - a beautiful bridal lehanga embellished with semi-precious stones, done with intricate zardosi work or the name behind it? For that matter, at the bridal exposition last year was it the backdrop of a wedding comprising an embellished elephant, people dressed as baratis, models as brides or again the label stuck to it — Tarun Tahiliani? Our answer is the abbreviation TT — Tarun Tahiliani.

However, he differs and ticks on the third choice as he looks out of the window of his office located in one corner of the 2.5-acre sprawling bungalow in Delhi. The third choice is, “My entire team. We brainstorm; observe the India around us and draw inspiration from the royal weddings of the past in Patiala, Kapurthala…and a couture collection is designed,” says the couturier, dressed casually in a white shirt, blue denims and Nehru jacket!

The brainstorming sessions remain the constant variable, the dependent variables change from couture to prêt. This time, it is prêt and Tarun is all set to put it on display at the exhibition in Ludhiana. The designs are thus humble, but not the price tags. Not adhering to the popular belief, he says that prêt is not determined by cost but the fact that it is ready to wear. Tarun has his reasons, “We generate business. We are responsible for the resurgence of craft. The trickle down effect is much more than what is visible. Hundred other small-time-designers, who copy my work, benefit from it.” The original, however, remains out of the reach for the masses; the class is found either in Ludhiana or Delhi!

The demographics of fashion have not changed much in the last few years; it’s at a distance of 283 kilometres that the cycle of demand and supply comes into being! “It’s from Ludhiana that I get the maximum business and clients,” he affirms. And it’s from here that he also gets orders for his comparatively new venture, designing weddings, which he says is an extension of his couture business. “A perfect wedding is a part of people’s fantasy in India. We try to translate it into reality.” No wonder, his bridal exposition was like a dream. Mere ramp, top models and perfect couture ensemble couldn’t have sufficed. “The backdrop has to befit the workmanship. It has to justify the concept of the big fat Indian weddings.”

Coming to the ‘copy-Tarun-Tahiliani’ business, where inspiration is actually plagiarism, Tarun is game for ‘register-your-design’ concept, which he knows is next to impossible in India. “How do I expect it ever to happen when I know bigger crimes than plagiarism in India are forgiven and forgotten? The hypocrisy in all sections of society doesn’t let me even expect that a designer’s creativity will be given its due,” says a cynical Tarun, who prefixes the adjective himself. “I am better off as a cynic than a hypocrite.” But who he is doesn’t end here; he adds to the description, “I am a chilled-out person, who loves all the beautiful things around.” Needless to say couture is what he is known for and the label Tarun Tahiliani takes the cause forward. Takes Tarun Tahiliani’s creativity to people around the world!

Over the top
Give an exotic touch to your look with tops that come in cocoon shape, tribal patterns and bright hues
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Fashion changes quickly and that is what we love about it! We have barely filled our wardrobes with the latest style and here we have summer 2012 catwalk trend on femininity and glamour. Expect to see hourglass figures, cocoon shapes, floral and tropical patterns (yet again), tribal prints and pastels in tops this season.

And what’s more, girls will dress like girls once again. We mean literally! “Expect to see flowing dresses, bright tones with a lot of baby pink, blue and yellows in different fabrics,” says Akhil Duggar, creative head, Madame.

He adds, “The trend for women’s top this year indicates chic fashion but now it’s turn for baggy style. Think loose this summer and the length has gone shorter with a casual silhouette. Kimonos too are calling the shots, but it is the multi-coloured stripes that are making the rounds. Colour blocking too is in vogue.”

And hold your breath, tribal prints are hot this season. “Tunics are quite in. And when talking of tunics, think ethnic patterned tunics and fitted silhouettes,” says designer Rashmi Bindra.

Lace is once again the blast from the past year. So, you can feel pretty in a lace blouse! “Delicate lace and ruffles make it feminine and memorable. This year too we will witness a lot of lace but only as an added accessory, not a complete outfit,” says Neha Sidhu from Voila. “Embroidered and patterned tops too are a rage and for the cuts it’s the asymmetrical, U and A-line that is in,” she adds.

Well, if you dare to wear crop tops, boob tubes, tube tops and the over-sized top are the new fashion statement this year.

Style check

  • Think ethnic with tribal prints in tunics.
  • It’s once again the floral and tropical fancy in tops.
  • Over-sized tops are hot on the fashion radar.
  • Pick your tees in colour block.
  • Tops in asymmetrical lines with ropes and belts as an added accessory is what you should look for.

Surging ahead!

Vidya Balan has a slew of hit songs and a lot of bankability after The Dirty Picture. She has increased her fee twice since the release following the success of Kahaani. She also has her own world tour now.

A source says, “Vidya now knows that she sells as a brand so she has become even choosier in her scripts. She only wants prominent or solo heroine roles. Even overseas, she has many more fans now because her recent films have done so well. She has been on a hit and acclaim spree since Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture, and Kahaani. People are willing to pay almost INR 5 crore per movie but she is more interested in doing quality roles over money. She returned a couple of scripts because she wanted her role to be enhanced. She has become a star today and people are lining up to work with her.”

The source continues, “This is the first time that a world tour is being planned with an actress. Usually, actors head world tours. Ranbir Kapoor is the latest instance but his tour has been postponed. Along with her, a popular music composer will go, so there will be good music and entertainment. No other people have been approached. This tour will kick-start in October and by that time she will be free from Ghanchakkar’s shooting. The shows will happen in America and Europe. All the details are being planned right now.” Way to go, Vidya!

Kiran miffed with Aamir

Since the time Azad has been born, Aamir has been usually conducting all his meetings at his residence. All pre-production, research meetings have been happening at his Bandra residence.

So when the team decided to make promos of the making-of (behind the scenes) footage, Kiran Rao got very annoyed. Reason being that she is a very private person and doesn’t like the entire house to be showcased on national television.

The team wanted to showcase promos that were candid and part of many discussions and meetings the team had. Aamir has been doing nothing else for the last two years. Since the show is closest to Aamir, they wanted the same to reflect in the promos. After Aamir Khan’s intervention and explaining to Kiran, how passionately the team felt about this, she finally agreed. Aamir Khan makes his debut on television with this show. His show is completely shrouded in mystery. He is not revealing anything. In fact promos have only added to the buzz and curiosity.

Body proud: Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha is undeniably attractive and pretty. With her tall and voluptuous frame, she stands out from the standardised rest. The actress from upcoming films such as Rowdy Rathore and Joker, talks about her body type and taking care of herself.

  1. To take care of your skin, it is very important to cleanse, tone, and moisturise. Use a product that suits your skin type and do not go and buy what is popular. Home remedies are absolutely fantastic to use too. Feeding your face is fun!
  2. I love working out not because I want to stay slim. It provides me with energy and relief from stress. It brings a glow to my face and makes me feel healthy. Exercise does wonders for beauty, physical and mental health.
  3. It is very important to remove every trace of make-up from your face and/or body. Do not compromise on this. Pamper your skin by steaming it, cleansing it, and massaging it. Spending time on yourself is an investment.
  4. I like being typically Indian. I have a curvaceous figure and I am very proud of it. I have brought back that body type. Curvy women are healthy and clothes fit us better. Be happy with your body, no matter what type it is.
  5. Switch from junk food to healthy natural foods. Replace sugar treats with dry fruits and nuts. Cut down on your caffeine intake. Drinking hot water in the morning is a good way to flush out toxins from your body. It also helps you maintain a flat tummy.

Daughter’s rejection was heart-breaking: Katherine Heigl

Actress Katherine Heigl says her adopted daughter Naleigh initially rejected her which left her feeling like a bad mother. The former Grey’s Anatomy star, who adopted Naleigh, 4, from South Korea in 2009 with husband Josh Kelley, said it made her upset when the little one didn’t respond to the affection she lavished on her, a magazine reported online.

“I fought incredibly hard for my daughter to accept me as mother. Her rejection almost broke my heart. At first I blamed myself and thought I was a bad mother. It took me a while before I could admit to myself that the lack of trust had nothing to do with me,” Heigl said. The Ugly Truth actress has cut back on her work to spend time with her daughter. And she really is spending some quality time with her daughter and taking care of her. “I’m the cuddler. I’m the one she comes to if she’s hurt. And I have a ritual for putting her to bed. She has one blankie that goes over her, one that goes by her face, and one that she holds. It’s our little thing,” she said.

Moment in Time
Vivid India-INIFD Time Machine, the annual exhibition by the students of the institute, is a representation of many eras and cultures
Jasmine Singh
Ming Yen collection

A prose writer Baltasar Gracian understood the value of time and passed on to us when he said — ‘all that really belongs to us is time, in fact those who have nothing, have it.’ Somewhere some good number of students from INIFD, Sector-8, actually read the quote somewhere and went ahead to experiment with the most precious, ever-changing word - ‘time’. By the end of it, working really hard for a couple of months they came out with a creation Vivid India- INIFD Time Machine, which is a representation of many eras, and how we can move back and forth in time.

This annual exhibition put up by the students of interior design, textile design and fashion design, offers an interesting play of time. A narrow tunnel that leads to a time machine from which you can select various periods - the royalty of Mughals, the bravado of freedom fighters, a peek-a-boo into ancient Rome and to the ancient arts of the Chinese. Ritu Kochhar, director, INIFD (corporate), has lots to say about the time machine as her students have put in a lot of effort to create a visual treat like this. “Everyone has added a lot of creativity and thought in this project. It was woven so nicely that it actually feels that you are moving from one time zone to another.”

As for the students, their excited and ‘eager-to-share-their-creativity’ faces take us to another time zone called present, where we quiz them on their effort. Ankita Narula and Chintu Kumar, first-year students of interior design have done the art work on Caeser’s Den that brings alive ancient Rome. Roman architecture, Roman bath and mural work with mosaic tiles, the students have got as near as they could to the Roman era. “We have created typical Roman interiors by using colours like signal red and Grecian green. Dado work, which is a major feature of Roman interiors, has also been used extensively,” they echo. You can wish to stop at The Colosseum, a symbol of might and wealth of Roman empire, or at the Trevi Fountain, which is considered to be the most beautiful fountain of Rome, or the very interesting Space age Café 3012. A three-dimensional universe is on display here!

Doc Talk
Fresh approach
Dr Gary Sandhu

Halitosis or bad breath can often cause embarrassment but most importantly it is an early sign of various bacterial manifestations in the oral cavity. Bad breath can also be due to various other factors such as constipation, liver disease and diabetes, but the most common causes in the oral cavity are gum diseases, lack of hydration, low salivary pH, eating pungent foods (onions/garlic), and excessive oral bacteria.

Oral lesson

A mouthwash is a solution used as an adjunct to regular oral hygiene methods, like brushing and flossing.

They are used for a variety of reasons, to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque (a thin film of bacteria that forms on teeth), to prevent or reduce gingivitis (an early stage of gum disease), to reduce the speed that tartar (hardened plaque) forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects. It is, however, generally agreed that the use of mouthwash does not eliminate the need for both brushing and flossing.

Different types of mouthwashes make various different claims. Some claim to freshen your breath. Some claim to fight bacteria. Some claim to stop plaque from building up. So how effective are they? And how do you choose the product that is right for you?

Various types

Broadly speaking, there are three types of mouthwashes. The first category is cosmetic mouthwashes to combat bad breath. They may freshen your mouth, mask stale odours and make your teeth feel clean, but they rarely have the power to combat bacteria or plaque. Therefore, they do not protect your teeth against decay.

The second types of mouthwash available are antiseptic mouthwashes. These are mouthwashes that claim to do more than simply mask bad breath. They actively fight plaque and protect your teeth against decay. Most dentists will agree that these kinds of mouthwashes work to varying degrees, some research has shown that mouthwash can reduce plaque by up to 25 per cent. However, this kind of mouthwash should never be used as a substitute for proper brushing and flossing of your teeth.

Finally, flouride mouthwashes are also available for people who are particularly susceptible to tooth decay. Most of us get the flouride we need from drinking water and flouride toothpastes. Therefore, you should never add extra flouride supplements to your oral health regimen without consulting your dentist first.

Alcohol issue

One other issue to be aware of is that many mouthwashes contain alcohol. This is a controversial issue for two reasons. The first is that many mouthwashes are manufactured in bright colours, with flavours which mask the antiseptic and alcohol in them. Of course, the alcohol content makes these mouthwashes particularly dangerous for children and they must be kept out of reach. The second controversial issue about alcohol in mouthwash is that some research has suggested that it can be a contributing cause to mouth cancer. Some mouthwash can contain as much as 25 per cent alcohol.

Nowadays, there are more and more alcohol-free mouthwashes in the market.

Common use involves rinsing the mouth with about 20ml (2/3 fl oz) of mouthwash two times a day after brushing. The wash is typically swished for about half a minute and then spat out.

The overuse of mouthwash is linked in several studies to oral bacterial infections, tooth decay and cancers of the mouth. The alcohol in the mouthwash is known to cause ‘dry mouth’ which allows bacterial overgrowth. The solvent properties of alcohol can dissolve fillings. Additionally, the alcohol stains teeth and damages the tooth enamel setting up an environment for accelerated tooth decay. Many individuals also like to use sugar-free gums and mint flavored candies to improve their breath. It is strongly advised to avoid these products.

Celeb point
A lesson for life
Divya Dutta

Hi and Happy Baisakhi! This year I will celebrate it with none other than Gurdas Maan. My first ever show with him! Kamaal na?

I am enjoying this phase of hosting a lot of shows. I just hosted the PTC music awards with Sonu Sood and Master Salim.

I enjoy the excitement, planning, re-planning and the nervous energy before a show. And that great sense of relief and high when you get it right finally.

I have just returned from Assam. I was hosting a government show for Shankar Ehsaan Loy. What fun to interact with a live audience! It was a 30,000 odd crowd in the stadium. And the euphoria was amazing. Every word spoken was cheered. And finally the DGP Assam came up on stage and said “You have a way with words young lady! You enthralled the audience.”

I was touched to hear that but this wasn’t the case a few years ago when I did my first world tour with Sonu Nigam, now my soul friend.

Not that I didn’t do a decent job but I used to mug up beautiful lines and then keep wondering what if I forgot!

I remember in one of the cities, the air conditioner went off in the auditorium and the audience got cranky, specially the young boys. As I went on stage to make an announcement, they started commenting loudly and wouldn’t let me speak. The 20-something-me got nervous and came

backstage crying. Sonu held my hand and pulled me back on stage. The audience was still cranky. Sonu confidently said, “Is this how you treat your country people when they come to entertain you? Is it our fault that the AC has conked off? We are still entertaining you, so why are you still not being a great audience?”

There was pin-drop silence! He continued, “She’s a young kid coming to your city for the first time. You want her to go back with bad memories?”

There was a magical spell. The audience stood up and cheered me up. And Sonu whispered to me, “I will not be everywhere to protect you. So, learn how to do it! Don’t mug your lines. Talk to the audience and they will listen to you.”

I still thank Sonu for that lesson. After that I never learnt my lines. All I learnt was to catch the pulse of the audience and be part of them!

As the police officials were thanking me for being the most graceful and fun host, I was thanking someone up there and a dear friend for this beautiful journey of dealing with a live audience and enjoying it. Bring it on!

Rajat Garg, a graduate from IIT Roorkee, established Origin Education, a venture from the IIT, to provide quality educational services to students. Not only a bookworm, the young lad has also completed a filmmaking course from IMI, Pune. A multi-faceted youngster, Rajat has handled students in his previous jobs as a mathematics teacher for some of the leading coaching institutes.

Motivational factor

The desire to be the best in anything I do is the main motivational factor that keeps me going. I cannot tolerate mediocrity from anyone and least of all, from myself, thus my self expectations make me continuously strive towards my goals.

Feathers in the cap

Starting my own venture Origin Education. I was sure from my college days that I will do my own thing at some point of my life and two years back I finally took that step.

Getting an opportunity to study under the refined faculty of IIT. Apart from studies, I also qualified for national-level tournament in squash and recently completed making a short film.

Strengths and weaknesses

One of my strength is adaptability. Besides this planning and organising are my strong points. But I feel my biggest strength is being optimistic. My inability to say no is my biggest weakness.

Flipside of being an achiever

I can say that to be a achiever one needs to channel all his or her energy and time into one’s sphere of work which takes a toll on personal relationships (as one is able to give less time) and health. Moreover, one also finds it hard to pursue some of his or her other passions or hobbies. I hope I can give time to playing squash, learning new languages, filmmaking, traveling, etc.

Words of wisdom

I advise the youth to follow their dreams without the fear of failure and social norms. Rest assured once they make that difficult choice many new doors will open, which they would not have thought in the beginning of their journey.

Road Rage
Head on
Simranjeet Gill

Cutting through the roads on a motorbike with a razor-sharp speed, maneuvering the handle at naughty angles, a trick here and there, each one of us have done our share of stunts with the machine. It was fun then and thinking about it might even bring a broad grin on your face, but riding like this not safe. Saying this will not end the matter here, because someone out there will be spinning the bike around. Safety is something we can stress on, and wearing helmets is the earliest measure that comes to our mind.

Motorcycle helmets are the main safety gear that should be remembered religiously before you think of hitting the road. Here we are talking about not just any helmet but the ones that can bear the test of time.

Before that, here is quick look on different kinds of motorcycle helmets—full face, three quarter shell and half-shell helmets. It is but for sure that you will pick the helmet as per your style, but don’t forget each of these types have their own plus and negative points. To begin with, the kind of helmet you choose also depends on the bike that you ride. For instance people who drive sports bikes like the Ninja wear a full face helmet. This minimizes wind resistance and neck fatigue. Another good thing about a full face helmet is that it is considered to be the safest in the three as it covers the widest area of head and face.

The three-quarter shell could easily be placed in the stylish category. People riding Harley Davidson prefer this because it is easy to communicate with other riders with the helmet in place. These can be easily taken off when required and they don’t block the vision.

The last category of half-shell face ones cover only top half of the cranium. Women like to go in for this helmet as it suits their style—does not bock ears and face is visible completely. In other words these helmets are chosen by those who would never wear helmets if left to them.

Once you know which category you fall into also make sure that it fulfils all legal requirements. All helmets must fulfill safety standards set up by the department of transportation. An ISI marked helmet is recommended as it meets all safety standards.

Lastly, when zeroing in on a helmet, remember the tagline that would make us smile, “Marzi hai aapki, aakhir sir hai apka”. So do not hesitate to shell out an extra buck for your safety. Other than this, also check whether it fits you properly. It should neither be too big because it will strain the riders’ neck and neither too tight for it will cause headache and problem in riding. Newer helmets using carbon compounds have lessened overall helmet weight. Remember it is about fun of riding, which should be made safe with helmets!

You never know when a mishap on the road could turn your life around. In actor Hiten Tejwani’s case, it only turned his car around and the actor escaped with minor bruises. Of course, this does not take away from the sheer horror of being thrown out of your seat as your car spins out of control.

On his way to the sets of Zee TV’s Punarvivaah where he was to shoot for a dance cameo at Yash and Aarti’s upcoming wedding on the show, the Pavitra Rishta actor’s car swerved to a sharp angle on its own and screeched to an awkward halt as if the tyres were jammed. The actor, though not badly hit, was thrown around within the car. Not the one to be easily shaken up, Hiten called one of his assistants to come pick up the car and attend to the tyre while he got into an auto and headed to the sets of Punarvivaah. We like the professionalism.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is April 11...

During this year, you will find growth and success, in career, finance and love. You will make a difference in someone’s life.

If you can build up enough confidence and stamina, the current year will bring everything that you have been looking for. You will dislike routine jobs, which have been staggering your creativity; this year will be all about changes and modifications.

You should be on the look-out for opportunities and grasp them. As Saturn remains your prime planet, it will bring only a few opportunities that may restrain growth. But Jupiter will not let you go down and prevent you from facing major hurdles in your educational life. You may impress your teachers with an excellent performance. You are dominated by the moon and number two, so you are a born adviser and source of inspiration for others. You have the ability to take quick decisions and lead your colleagues.

There will be many choices, new beginnings for you. Your relationships may have a whole new dimension. There is a possibility that you may try to dominate your partner.

Mood: Highly invested. Compatible signs: Leo, Virgo. Lucky colours: Blue, Chocolate. Lucky days: Monday and Saturday. Lucky numbers:  14, 21, 24, 50. Lucky gem: South Sea Pearl. Lucky flower: Jasmine.
