Hospital employee murdered

Banur, April 10
An employee of the Gian Sagar Hospital here was found murdered near the Dharmgarh-Rajumajra road yesterday morning. Gurpreet Singh of Nangal Charbar village, who worked at the hospital as attendant, went home after duty around 10 pm on Sunday night.

According to the police, there were knife-attack marks on the body. His motorcycle was found parked near the body.

The police registered a case under Section 302 of the CrPC and started an investigation. The body was handed over to the family after conducting post-mortem examination.

Two booked for abduction, rape

Lalru, April 10
The police has booked Manpreet Singh and Manjeet Singh of Khajoor Mandi village for abduction and rape. Gurpreet Kaur of the same village had filed a complaint against them.

She had reported that she was abducted in a car on the morning of April 6 and kept at an unidentified location.

She later found herself at Beas, near Amritsar, and informed her husband over telephone. She was brought here by her husband yesterday.

The medical examination of the victim was conducted at the Civil Hospital in Dera Bassi yesterday. The accused were absconding.

Cultural fest enthrals students

Ambala, April 10
A three-day cultural and sports fest started at MM University in Mullana today. Teams of around 40 institutions have been participating in the event.

A fashion show will also be organised. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashank Anand inaugurated the fest and said the fest would offer full entertainment to the students. He said the MM University had become a hub of education in the region. The university chancellor, Tarsem Garg, vice chancellor SG Damle, registrar HK Sharma were also present on the occasion.

HC gives go-ahead to 200-ft road completion

Mohali, April 10
Decks have been cleared for the completion of the 200-foot-wide road that will connect the Chandigarh-Kharar road stretch with the upcoming international airport. While disposing of a writ petition, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has paved way for the widening of the road.

As per the Land Acquisition Act, the process for acquiring both chunks of land were taken up by GMADA, but the farmers owning the land moved the High Court stating that they did not want to part with the land falling under the proposed urban estate.

The judgement was delivered on March 30.

All processes for the acquisition of the road have already been done and soon the compensation will be awarded to the parties whose land is falling under the stretch of the road.

Once the compensation is awarded, the next step will be to issue tenders for the development of the road and the same is expected to be completed within 6 to 8 months.

3 accused of fraud brought on production warrant

Panchkula, April 10
The police has brought three fraud accused on production warrant from Gurgaon. The trio had duped a Sector-21 resident of Rs 20,000 for providing a maid. The three accused, who have been identified as Pinky (maid), Vinod and Sanjay, all natives of West Bengal, were produced in the court which remanded them to judicial custody at Ambala jail.

The police said the three were running a company at Gurgaon and used to charge Rs 20,000 for the service.

In his complaint, Om Parkash had stated that a Delhi-based firm had duped him of Rs 20,000. He alleged that he had paid Rs 20,000 to the firm for hiring a maid, however, the woman ran away from there after two days. After the company failed to give a satisfactory reply to him, he lodged a complaint with the police which traced the telephone number of the the company to Gurgaon. The police contacted its counterparts in Gurgaon, which nabbed the accused, who were brought on production warrant.

Five held

Zirakpur: The police today arrested three girls, along with two pimps, from a rented accommodation at Motia Heights in Dhakoli.

The accused have been identified as Rajan Grover and Amit Mehta, both residents of Sirsa district, Haryana. All of them are from Nepal. The police said on receiving a tip-off, it laid a trap and arrested Rajan, along with three girls. A case under the Immoral Trafficking Act has been registered against the accused.

They will be produced in the Dera Bassi court tomorrow.

One killed in mishap

Zirakpur, April 10
A Chandigarh-based businessman died after the car he was travelling in turned turtle before ramming into a Punjab Roadways bus here this morning. The deceased was identified as Chander Mohan Oberoi, a resident of Sector 40-B.

The accident occurred at 6.15 am. Chander Mohan, who was on his way to Chandigarh from Delhi, lost control over the vehicle near McDonald’s outlet. The police took the victim to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. — TNS

Leander’s down-to-earth gestures win over fans

With a broad smile and down-to-earth gestures, the ace tennis player, Leander Paes, today spread his magic among budding tennis players, at the CLTA courts, Sector 10, here.

In the city to conduct a tennis clinic for the trainees of CLTA (Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association), the 13 Grand Slams’ winner in doubles and mixed doubles events, Leander was seen enjoying every moment of his visit to the City Beautiful after 1993.

“It’s my second visit to the city and this time I have taken an initiative to promote tennis here. I came here in 1993 and played a match at the courts located at the outer arena of the complex. Hopefully one day; these children will make me proud after taking the nation to new heights” said Paes.

Adding further “I will continue to deliver my best to the game and moreover I wanted the young generation to learn the game through best possible means” said Paes.

When asked about possible exposures for the young budding players of CLTA, the ace player replied, “With collaboration of AITA (All India Tennis Association) and all sincere efforts of the officials, a professional foreign coach will be deployed here soon. The expense part, including his stay and training schedule, will be charted out soon. I hope to see young budding player from Chandigarh” said Paes.

Later, he also inaugurated the new hostel building made in collaboration with the Chandigarh administration.

MoU signed

Earlier, during the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between the Haryana Government in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and All-India Tennis Association (AITA) secretary-general Anil Khanna for the promotion of tennis.

On behalf of the Haryana government, RP Chander, finance commissioner and principal secretary, signed the memorandum with CLTA, for adopting about 15 players from rural areas of the state to nurture them in the sport.

“Earlier, 10 players were selected during the trails, but now we have decided to increase the number to 15-players. The decision was taken, as the state wants to produce top players in the country. Haryana is leaving no stone unturned to promote the sports and even in this case, hope we will produce the best tennis players.

Those selected are:

Boys: Bhupinder, Naresh, rohit, Shashikant and Sachin;

Girls: Aarti, Niki, Princi, Priyanka, and Ravita.

A dream come true for many

“It’s like a dream true, I have been waiting for the day and finally I met him today. He is my favourite tennis star and I want to be like him. He is very humble and advised me to stay calm and concentrate on my game” Parmeet said

“Paes sir suggested us to concentrate on the game and to be physically fit, as tennis needs more stamina. Moreover, it can be only gained through exercising and training hard. He told us that whenever we found any exercise dull or boring, we should ask our coach to modifiy it so as to keep our interest” Nimit and Abhay said.

CLTA to host Davis Cup match

AITA secretary-general Anil Khanna allotted a Davis Cup match to the City Beautiful. The match will be held in September between India and New Zealand.

Exhibition match steals the show

Leander in partnership with Bhupinder Singh Hooda also played an exhibition match at court number 1 of the CLTA courts. The duo paired against CLTA trainees Ranjit and Dheer Anush Bhatti. After a match that lasted for an hour, the international player along with Bhupinder Singh defeated the young duo in a match, which was a tie-breaker.

“We will remember the day, it was like our dream to play against our god father. He liked our shots and suggested us to work hard on it. We will continue to work hard so as to excel in the world of tennis like him one day” said the Ranjeet and Dheer.

Kho-kho trials on April 18

The Chandigarh Kho-Kho Association will conduct trials to select the city team at the Maharishi Dayanand Adarsh Vidyalaya (MDAV), Sector 22, on April 18 (4 pm), here.

The trials will be organised to select the probables for the upcoming 24th Sub-junior National Kho-Kho Championship for boys and girls to be held at Jharkhand from May 30 to June 3.

Organisers said, the players under-14 (till June 4) can participate in the trails.

The players are advised to attend the trails in proper kits along with their school I-cards. Interested players can contact Surinder Singh Bhandari (9814630280) physical education teacher MDAV School for further details.

Pune Warriors arrive in city for IPL match

Winning both matches at the league stage in the ongoing IPL (Indian Premier League), team Pune Warriors landed in the city, here today.

The team arrived at around 5 pm, with Saurav Ganguly leading the team from the front.

The team is scheduled to play against Kings XI Punjab team on April 13, in their first home ground clash.

On the other hand, the home team will look forward to register their first win in the ongoing season of IPL.

The selling of tickets continues to hog the limelight as the Students Block tickets are almost sold out at all the extension counters while the corporate and upper-terrace tickets are yet to get a good response.

Local lad Harsh shares fourth spot with Kolkata’s Tutul

Local contender Harsh Gangwar scored three-over 75 to share the fourth spot along with Kolkata’s Tutul Ali who finished fifth during the first day of USHA IGU Delhi Juniors’,being played in Delhi, today.

In category B, Jaipur’s Prakhar Asawa shot a level-par round to finish second while second ranker Viraj Madappa hit 2-over 74 to take the third spot.

On the first day, Kolkata’s Mohan Sardar left his elder colleagues behind after making a shot 2-under 70 to take the opening round lead in category B.

Delhi’s duo Abhishek Kuhar and Manu Gandas shared the lead in Category A with 2-over 74. Kuhar’s back nine saw gifted him three bogeys on 15th, 16th and 18th after a birdie on 12th but he failed to have the front nine.

Mohan Sardar, who started playing on the junior circuit a year ago, began his round with a birdie on first, made a bogey on third and birdied 13th and 18th to return with the best score of the day.

In category A: Samar Singh Sandhu, Shubhankar Sharma and Tapendra Ghai all from Delhi shared the third place at 3-over 75 to take the third, fourth and fifth place respectively while their teammate Honey Baisoya, winner of East India Amateur Golf Championship last year, had a disappointed day as he shot 5-over 77 for the 10th place.
