An issue that matters
The moment one talks about sperm donation in our country, one sees a few red faces, but Vicky Donor, an upcoming Bollywood rom-com, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam and Annu Kapoor, is just the right kind of education for people. If on one hand Ayushmann and Yami are making their debut in Bollywood, actor John Abraham is turning producer with this movie and is also making an appearance in an item song Rum Whisky. Although sperm donation forms the background of the movie, it revolves around a love story between a Punjabi guy and a
Bengali girl.
Director’s take Shoojit Sircar has shown his inclination towards promoting different subjects through the movie Yahaan, which was released in 2005. Another of his venture Johny Mastana, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is due for release. Says Shoojit, “I’m all geared up for the release of Vicky Donor. After its trailers were released, I received bizarre and hilarious responses from the audiences.” Vicky Donor is not a slapstick or adult comedy; it is a movie with a lot of humour. “Infertility is a very serious issue and it should be tackled with progressive thoughts,” adds Shoojit. Doctor right Veteran actor Annu Kapoor plays Dr Chadda and convinces Vicky (Ayushmann Khurrana) to donate sperms. Says Annu, “An actor tends to look for a better role and a good script; Vicky Donor has them all, so I agreed to do the role.” The experienced actor has handled the subject of sperm donation in a serious
manner, so in no way it looks vulgar or frivolous. “I have played my role just on the
edge and in the right way,” adds Annu. Straight talk Yami Gautam, the lead actress from Chandigarh, says, “I play a Bengali girl from Delhi who is in love with Vicky Arora, a Punjabi guy. The movie was a challenge for everyone as it revolves around the sensitive issue of sperm donation.” It is Yami’s debut in Bollywood and she is very confident about her break. “When I read the script of the movie , I thought it is an opportunity to prove how I am different from other actors. It is a movie relates to everyone and has been shot in a modern setting,” adds Yami. Yami feels that this movie will identify her distinguished characteristics as an actor. sabiatalwar@tribunemail.com
Donor’s diary VJ-turned-actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who hails from Chandigarh, plays the lead character Vicky Arora. Says Ayushmann, “As I’m not a star kid, I always wanted a break with a movie that had a unique subject. Vicky Donor is a serious subject showcased in a light-hearted manner.” Vicky Arora is good-for-nothing Punjabi guy who plays cricket and ends up becoming a sperm donor. “It’s a topic that people don’t talk about, but for childless couples it is a miracle. I have actually donated sperms in 2004 as a part of MTV Roadies task,” adds Ayushmann. He has even composed the song ‘Paani Da Rang’ for the movie. Overall, Ayushmann did not find the role difficult because it is an issue-based concept.

Housing a dream
When Deepak Sud bought almost a hundred-year-old property on the outskirts of Shimla, the last thing he wanted to do was to dismantle it. Same has been the case with Daavin Vohra from Sector 11, Chandigarh. She bought an old house and with the help of their able architect Ajai Johl, turned it around while retaining the structural base and yet having all modern facilities.
Remodelling might not be an ‘in’ thing and it is truly more challenging than creating something afresh. Some known architects from Chandigarh share with us how to save money as well time if you are planning to re-do a house. Ajai Johl, who has re-modelled as many as 11 houses, has some tips, “The very first step is to understand the structural premise of the existing house and the client’s requirements. It works if one retains the walls and larger structure. Plumbing and flooring is generally to be re-done. Making split levels, creating spaces come in handy, giving a new character to a house.” It’s rather more time consuming to re-model a house than making it from a scratch, feels architect Surinder Bahga. Having remodelled many houses and buildings, he shares with us how to save on resources, “Vertical stacking of all service areas and structural components makes it functionally workable, structurally stable and economically viable.” It helps to know and follow building bylaws. “It saves a lot of hassles that can crop up later on,” he advices. Renu Khanna has remodelled a few houses, though not lately. She says, “Increasingly, people are opting to rather raze the constructions. Nowadays there are companies that not only come and do it for you, but also pay you for it. It helps as sometimes the old constructions are solid, so it becomes a task to demolish them.” For those who have their heart set on re-doing the present one, this is the advice she doles out. “Generally the old construction was constricted. So, it helps to make one room out of the two or converting a whole bedroom to a bathroom. With the trend of open kitchens becoming popular, one big room can be converted into a kitchen as well. Converting small windows into big ones, which overlook greenery or cutting roofs at strategic places to give double height to some areas, are some of the few steps that can be helpful for remodelling in general.” Keep in mind these points and also enlist an able architect if remodelling your present home is on your mind. mona@tribunemail.com

A keen eye
Dr Amod Gupta is a leading eye surgeon of the country with specialisation in Uvea and Retina. His uncle Dr SC Gupta, a known eye surgeon of his times, inspired Dr Amod to pick up ophthalmology as a career. “The respect and stature he enjoyed in the family enthused me,” says Dr Amod.
However, it was not until he got the opportunity to be a WHO fellow at Wills Hospital in Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, that he found his vision. His stint in the US during the mid 80s changed his perception towards life forever. “I was kind of shocked to see how the very famous doctors whom we read all along behave with patients and others,” says Dr Amod. Treating those around with dignity, a sense of discipline and being humble are some of the qualities that he picked up during his stay. “It was then that I developed a vision and have been successful in achieving it somewhat.” Dr Amod, professor, head, Department of Ophthalmology and Dean, PGI, shares with us his fundamentals of success. Be ‘in flow’ One should put in as much hardwork in one’s job as is possible, before it becomes effortless. When a music maestro creates or a painter paints they are so much in flow. It is this ‘in flow’ that one must achieve in whatever field one is in. Be it a scientist or an artist, they create when lost in their work. Work should be an extension of your life. Selfless work and devotion It’s devotion towards work that makes one excel. If one aspires for material gains; that in itself is a stumbling block. Work selflessly, with absolute devotion. Chasing awards and rewards is no use, they will anyways come in due course. Honesty and integrity Having double standards doesn’t work. One needs to cultivate behaviour that stays the same whether alone or in company. Being a teacher I do what my job is and not just demonstrate my skills or acumen. It’s total integrity that matters. There is no scope to go easy here ever. Practice what you preach One needs to be a role model if one wants to set standards. Heading the department, I consider that it’s my job to be the first inside the hospital. I reach work at 7:15 every morning and try to be the last one to leave. It’s integrity that matters in all fields, especially academics. You can morally question others only when you practice what you preach. No beating your own drum One needs to move beyond ‘I, me and myself’. We all are too temporary to call anything ‘my’ achievement. There is no Einstein in this era. One needs to build trust and a team. Being a leader, one must learn to sacrifice and give due credit to the team. And, this has to come from the heart.

Grey zone
Dr Vikas Sharma Hair colour is produced by tiny hair pigment cells within our hair follicles called melanocytes. As we age, the activity of these melanocytes gradually declines until they stop making pigment. New hair grown in without pigment, result in grey hair. With age the melanocytes lose their ability to make pigment, so colour is absent from new hair. Each one of us has a genetically determined time for having grey hair. In our population and race, white hair ideally should first appear at the age of 37 plus or minus 9.6 years. Any greying of hair before this age is premature known as canities. The beard and moustache areas commonly become grey before scalp or body hair. On the scalp, the temples usually show greying first, followed by a wave of grey-ness spreading to the crown and later to the occipital area. Although nothing can stop hair from turning grey, there are some conditions that can cause hair to grey earlier or more quickly than normal. l
Early greying of the hair is basically hereditary, and we can inherit it from one of our parents or grandparents. l A person experiencing a prolonged period of stress and anxiety may notice, over a period of time, white hair gradually appearing. l Malnutrition, worry, shock, deep sorrow, tension and other similar conditions may also slow down the production of melanin resulting in grey hair. l Severe illness too can stop or affect the production of melanin. l Improper dietary habits; sleep hours, sedentary life style, and alcohol also can lead to premature greying. How to prevent premature greying? Nourishment and proper grooming is very important to keep the hair texture, growth, shine and luster in a good condition. Choose products that are gentle, preferably without any harsh detergent. For daily washes, use a shampoo that is mild, gentle and moisturising. Don’t use too much conditioner or else it makes hair greasy. Amla is helpful too. (Dr Sharma is a Chandigarh-based skin

Anand Bakshi, Panchkula Try to explain her that it is a sport that you are passionate about and you take note of all security factors. I am sure she is just worried about your safety. If possible take her along with you to one of such trips and she will understand? Don’t push her too far, she has her own reasons, it will be nice if you give her some time so that she can come to terms with your passion for adventure. I am 18 year old youngster who wants to pursue kick boxing. My parents feel it is a total waste of time. I know I can excel in this sport. How should I explain this to them? Rahul Singh, Chandigarh If only you are doing well in studies they will have no problem with it. Studies are equally important so you should concentrate on it. Kick boxing can always be taken up as a hobby. But if you really feel this is where you can excel then give your hundred percent and something will work out. (Rana is a Bollywood actor) |

Par Excellence
Apart from putting curvature on the ball as in the shaped shots (Draw and fade) we can also vary the trajectory of the ball. The low shot is a useful shot while playing from under the trees in a rough or for playing in extremely windy conditions. The high shot maybe required when we have to hit over a tree/obstruction or to an elevated green. The key to varying the trajectory of the ball is the set-up. Our address position has the maximum impact on the trajectory of the ball. To hit it low, the sternum or centre of the body should be ahead of the ball. This could be done by keeping the ball position further back in our stance or by tilting our body towards the target (left foot for right-handed players).
This would put the centre of our body ahead of the ball and more weight on the front foot (picture 1). The backswing is created by turning the shoulders but keeping the weight on the left side. This would result in a steeper swing that would start the ball low. The back of the left hand should remain bowed at impact (picture 2).The backswing should be a little shorter as the harder we hit the ball the more it gets up in the air.
The set up for the high shot is the opposite to that of the low shot. The centre of the body is positioned behind the ball. This could be done by moving the ball position forward in the stance or by tilting our body away from the target. This would put the centre of the body behind the ball and more weight on the back foot (picture 3). The face of the club could be opened a little for loft and bounce. This set-up would promote a shallower angle of approach with the maximum loft. As the angle of approach could get too shallow, which could lead to a thin/topped shot we have to hit down with the arms while executing this shot. The trouser way
Summer is here and with everyone looking for ideas to re-dress their closet, let’s talk about one wardrobe essential for every woman - a pair of good trousers. Although last year palazzos were in fashion, this season it is high waist flare and the tapered look. “This season is about comfort and style teamed together. We have the pleated style trousers for women, as also the high waist pants. In colours, it’s the basic black and beige that are in,” says an employee of No Exit, Fun Republic, Manimajra.
While last year it was the style of 70’s and 80’s that made a comeback, this year also the high waist pants is inspired by Katharine Hepburn. “When it comes to styles, stripes seem to hold a place in fashion every year and this season too, you can’t go wrong wearing it,” says an employee from Wills in Sector 17. She adds, “Conical look is in for the pants in women. Flare is another rage but that has loops for a skinny belt, as belts are a big fashion statement this year.” Well, talking of belts, almost all trousers are coming with belts this season, be it the sleek leather ones or the added accessory of a cloth-like belt. As for the designers, they have sewed up the most intricate touting pleats, folds and styles for the women but have given preference to high waist pants. “Floral and Capri style pants too are a rage this season, but they are fitted for the perfect figure,” says Geet Sethi, consultant trainer, Esprit. “For colours, it is quite bold. From browns to whites that have been usual, you can also pick red, pink, green and even a yellow pant. But for that, you need to have the poise to carry what you are wearing,” she adds.

Kate Winslet hates My heart will go on
Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet says she is not a fan of song My heart will go on from her film. The love theme from 36-year-old’s most successful film, Titanic, sung by Celine Dion, was a huge hit around the world, but the actress said she has to hide her real feelings every time she hears it. “I feel like throwing up when I hear it. No, I shouldn’t say that. No, actually, I do feel like throwing up. I wish I could say, ‘Oh listen, everybody! It’s the Celine Dion song!’ But I don’t. I just have to sit there, you know, kind of straight-faced with a massive internal eye roll,” she said. In Titanic, she played socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, who essayed the role of Jack Dawson.
It bagged 11 Oscars and the re-release of the film in 3D marks 100 years since the doomed passenger liner set sail from Southampton to New York in 1912, claiming several lives. —PTI
Texas, here he comes!
John Carter star Taylor Kitsch says it’s important to make risky choices in career. The 30-year-old actor said that he wants to take on different characters as he doesn’t want to be typecast, reported a magazine.
“I want to keep working with the best, keep going and be a better actor each time I go and dive into something. I want to be scared. I want to keep taking insane risks. I want to be scared because you’re going to grow through that whether you want to or not. I don’t want to play the same guy. I want to keep throwing curveballs to you guys and keep telling stories,” he said. Besides concentrating on his career, the former personal trainer says he wants to live a ‘normal’ life in Austin, Texas, after buying a house there. “When I’m not acting, I try to be normal, play golf, play hockey. It’s funny because you’re in this little bubble when you’re working - you don’t read books, you don’t really keep up with the news, you’re just living that life. When you get out, you just kind of reacquaint yourselves with family and friends. You try and forget and just try and remember what reality feels like,” he added. — PTI

Actor Boman Irani, who has won accolades for his performances in films like Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots, says that theatre honed his acting skills.
“There are several people who have taken acting or drama classes, but I luckily did 15 years of theatre... that was my training ground and education as an actor,” Boman said. “I can learn the craft of acting by looking at people, observing them, etc. Every little detail one can learn as an actor is purely by observation. Theatre is the best acting school. I feel, in a way, theatre hones your skills,” he added. Talking about actors of the Munnabhai series at the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film festival recently, director Rajkumar Hirani said that while Sanjay Dutt has “amazing memory” and improvises, Arshad Warsi takes the gist of the dialogue and says the lines the way he wants. “But when it comes to Boman Irani, I need six months’ preparation.” Boman would be seen next in Sajid Khan’s comedy film, Housefull 2 and Priyadarshan’s Tezz.

The fourteen year itch?
Boyzone star Ronan Keating and his wife Yvonne have reportedly called time on their marriage after 14 years. The 35-year-old singer and his former model wife are thought to have called time on their union in November and are currently making plans for separate living arrangements but have not made an official announcement for the sake of their three children, Jack, 13, Missy, 11, and Ali, six, reported a publication online.
The couple’s marriage suffered following his reported alliance with dancer Francine Cornell on a Boyzone tour in the summer of 2009 and although they appeared to work things out, friends say the damage was irreparable. “They broke up in November and that was that. There was no going back. But the friendship and the love will always be there. Neither of them wanted this to happen. Their lives will be forever entwined; it is just that they are no longer together. The damage to Ronan and Yvonne’s relationship was never repaired despite many attempts. They nearly sorted it out last year but it just didn’t last. God knows, they don’t want this situation but they are thinking of what is best for their kids,” a source said. “They told their children a while ago before it got into the newspapers. They are all very strong as a family. It’s heartbreaking for them. It has been nearly two years but they really tried to make their marriage work again. Sometimes when it is broken, it is broken and it can’t be fixed. Without going into the nitty gritty, they just couldn’t pick up the pieces,” it added, Keating and 37-year-old Yvonne married in a private ceremony in 1998, on the Caribbean isle of Nevis, shortly after the death of his beloved mother Marie from cancer and although they have split, their relationship has remained amicable. “There was just too much broken. They still go out together for dinner and are still a family. It is just they are not in a marriage any more. They are still good friends. It is just that their marriage is over. It is devastating for them. They have been together since they were young adults and thought they would be spending the rest of their lives together. It just wasn’t to be,” the source said. Once upon a time…
Frida star Salma Hayek says she went into depression after she was blighted by acne as she tried to break into movies. The 45-year-old Mexican actress is famed for her good looks, but she insists she reached rock bottom after suffering severe breakouts of spots on her face during her mid-20s.
And the star was so depressed, that she turned to food for comfort - and piled on pounds, reported a publication online. “You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad it sent me into severe, severe depression. Like I couldn’t leave the house.
The next stage with that sort of depression is food - too little or too much. Guess what I did. I was fat and broken out. I couldn’t leave the house and I couldn’t pay the rent,” she said. —PTI

While most Bollywood actresses have asked for voice artists to dub for their Bengali films, Dia Mirza chooses to be different. She has taken up the task of dubbing her own lines for debut Bengali film Paanch Adhyay. Dia, whose mother is a Bengali, plays a half-Bengali girl named Ishita in the film.
“I would say my Bangla was decent before I filmed Paanch Adhyay and post filming, spending time in Kolkata, conversing with so many people during my time there, it has only gotten better. I still would like to learn to think in Bangla,”the 30-year-old said.
Talking about her character Dia said: “My character travels through the ups and downs of marriage and the poignancy of love... lost and found. I am at a head space now where I am looking to expand my horizons. Subtle, brilliant, artistic, charming, talented yet loves to keep a low profile, actress Bhairavi Raichura, who made an impact with audiences in Sasuraal Genda Phool and Balika Vadhu now has turned producer with Colors Chhal. Here’s a chat with the soft spoken Bhairavi, who likes her life to be uncomplicated and simple.
Why did you turn a producer? I have been an actor for 15 years and I was looking out to do something more than acting. Nandita Mehra, who is the director of Uttaran has been a great friend. She handles the creative side, while I handle the production. Tell us about Chhal Chhal is a social thriller with a slick, crisp look. We shot in locations like Mussoorie and Auli, which gave the show a fresh look. We want to break away from the clutter and establish ourselves as good producers. What do you enjoy most about Sasuraal Genda Phool? The off-screen fun. We have several special moments while shooting. We are all like a family, we make fun of each other. There are no ego hassles or tantrums. The cast, script, dialogues and the director Rakesh are all in tandem. I guess because we do so much masti on the sets, the chemistry flows on-screen too. Which has been your most satisfying performance? Astitva was a role that is closest to my heart. Playing Urmila Manas’ ex-wife gave me an opportunity to portray various shades from a guilty woman who has an extra-martial affair to a positive woman. Why do you prefer to keep a low profile? Yes I do. I enjoy being with my friends and family, going out with them and spending time with them post pack-up. I don’t like socialising for the heck of it or to be in the news. That is not me. I like working and keeping to myself.
