Defence official’s wife strangled, says police
Tribune New Service

New Delhi, April 2
A senior police official today confirmed that Archana Sharma, 35, the wife of a defence ministry official, was strangulated at her residence at Hudco Place. According to sources, her postmortem report has been released. She was possibly killed at 7 am on March 30, the day the bodies were discovered by the fire and police officials.

The police had earlier hinted that Yashkar had possibly murdered his wife by strangulating her with a cloth and then committed suicide by setting himself ablaze.

Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, Yashkar's cousin while speaking to The Tribune, said it was not possible that he had murdered his wife.

"I have known Yashkar for a very long time. He was not an aggressive person. He rarely became angry. Many people, including his friends and acquaintances, claim that he was a jovial person and never held grudges against anyone. It is not possible that he killed his wife and then himself. They loved each other and were a perfect couple. He also had a huge responsibility of taking care of his ailing mother," said Diwakar, who is a physician based in Patna, Bihar.

"Yashkar's body was charred and Archana strangled, but no one heard any voices, which is very surprising. No inflammable material was found inside the house. When I saw the photos of his body, I noticed his tongue was sticking out, which probably indicates that he was strangled before being set on fire. He could not have done this on his own," added Diwakar.

Sources said that Archana had sustained head injuries.

The police recovered a note from Yashkar's residence, which read that he blamed two senior army officers for harassing him at work.

Diwakar said, "Yashkar had always been hardworking since his childhood. He had to bear many responsibilities as his father had died when he was young. When he came to meet me at Patna last month, he told me that he was under stress because of working in the RTI (Right to Information) wing of the defence ministry. He had to handle sensitive issues. But, Yashkar was not a person who would yield to work pressure."

Yesterday, the police questioned three army officers, including the one whose name was mentioned in the note and who was also Yashkar's senior in office.

Auto driver beaten to death over parking
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 2
Two men killed an autorickshaw driver by allegedly bashing him with baseball bats. They had quarrelled with him over the parking of his vehicle at an area in Geeta Colony last night.

The driver, Radhe Shyam (45) had parked his vehicle in front of his sister, Janak Rani's house. He usually parked his vehicle at a different place, which had been occupied by cars.

Harjeet Singh, who stays on the first floor of the four-storey building, objected to the parked autorickshaw.

He started abusing Radhe, who went back to his house in a nearby lane and returned with his wife, Kavita Rani and nephew, Ravi. Harjeet and his son, Manjeet Singh started bashing Radhe and Ravi, when they tried to settle the matter. They were beaten with baseball bats.

Kavita had witnessed her husband being beaten to death. He sustained severe injuries and fell to the ground. Radhe was rushed to hospital by his wife and Ravi.

The incident occurred at 10.30 pm. The police received a telephone call about the incident from Rani Garden in East Delhi. The police has registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Harjeet and Manjeet. They along with their families are absconding.

Ravi said, "My uncle had taken me with him to settle the matter peacefully, but the other party wanted to fight. When we reached outside their building, Harjeet and Manjeet came down with baseball bats. They called other people and bashed my uncle and me with the bats. My uncle suffered injuries on his head and chest, which led to his death."

The police is waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the cause of death as Radhe has no visible external injuries. He could have died due to a heart attack or illness, according to the police. However, Radhe's family denied that he had suffered from any illness.

Ten years ago, Radhe owned an embroidery factory. After suffering heavy losses, he started driving an autorickshaw about three months ago. He was the sole breadwinner of his family.

BJP to zero in on Cong ‘scams’
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 2
The campaigning for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) poll on April 15 has been kicked off on a satirical note by the BJP party which is set to launch a 'scam book' and a documentary showcasing the corruption cases of the state and Central government in the past five years.

In an attempt to stain the image of the ruling Congress, the party has prepared a book detailing the recent cases of corruption, including the ones relating to the Commonwealth Games, procuring of low-floor buses, privatization of water, unauthorized colonies, etc.

Besides, it has also prepared a documentary presenting its achievements through the projects accomplished as the ruling party in MCD.

Explaining the party's campaign strategy of the upcoming polls, party president Vijender Gupta said, "Nitin Gadkari will launch the 'scam book' highlighting scams under the Congress-ruled government in Centre and Delhi. On Wednesday, we will also release our vision document for the Capital and then election manifesto for the municipal polls."

The leader of the opposition in Delhi assembly, V K Malhotra claimed that the BJP will win all the three proposed corporations by two-thirds majority in each corporation. Focusing on the major problem of parking in the Capital, the BJP has promised to construct a number of multi-level underground parking lots across the city.

The party has tried to prepare its manifesto on more realistic grounds this time by promising only those things which come under the jurisdiction of the corporation.

According to the BJP committee on manifesto, the party will dole out realistic pledges which can be fulfilled by the three corporations.

"This time there is a strong anti-incumbency wave against the Congress due to corruption and price rise. The BJP will win in all the three corporations," said Prof Malhotra.

The source said the party will promise to construct several multi-level underground parking lots at green belt (park) to decongest commercial and residential areas.

"Parking is a major problem in the city and with the limited space, it is necessary to develop multi-level parking. These parking lots also require large space, which can be made available at the MCD's parks," added Prof Malhotra.

Ex-schoolteacher held for running ‘call girl-drugs’ racket

New Delhi, April 2
She taught young students in Punjab once but entered the world of crime - dealing in sex trade, cricket betting and drug peddling - eight years ago following family problems.

Fifty-year-old Vimal Marwah, who left her teacher's job and moved to Delhi after marriage, was arrested along with one of her associates Ajay Kalra (41), a debt-ridden businessman, and her customer Arun Gupta (43) from the capital on Saturday, the police said today.

On the day she was arrested, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand said she was to fly along with eight girls to Colombo where she had organised a party in a casino. Around 275 g of cocaine was seized from the three girls, besides seven passports, air tickets of Sri Lankan Airlines and two vehicles.

The arrests came following the police receiving inputs that Kalra would come to Rajouri Garden to deliver cocaine, he added.

"Around 25 g of cocaine was seized from her possession and 100 g of cocaine was seized from a bag kept in the vehicle. Subsequently, Marwah was apprehended. From her possession another 75 g of cocaine concealed in her hand bag was seized.

"Further investigation led to apprehension of Gupta from whom we seized another 75 g of cocaine," Chand said.

During interrogation, he said, Marwah said that after completing BEd, she taught in a school in Ropar and shifted to Delhi after marriage to a small-time businessman.

In 1991, her husband left her and moved to Mumbai. After the death of her father-in-law, she could not earn enough to take care of her family.

"In 2004, she became part of an immoral trafficking racket and started providing call girls. Two years ago, she was arrested but was released and continued her activities," Chand said.

She said that for the past one year she had noticed a trend that her customers were demanding cocaine along with the girls. "As a 'package deal' she then started supplying cocaine along with the girls. She charged Rs 30,000 for a girl and 1 g cocaine. Marwah also ran a betting syndicate involving cricket matches. She is familiar with the top bookies and their contacts in Delhi. Her clients also included bookies," Chand added. — PTI
