‘City could win trophy’
Chandigarh, March 28 “I have requested the secretary of the Chandigarh football association to ask the AIFF officials for relieving both the players for the finals, as they were important for the team. If not in the meeting, they should have made a personal request because of the city’s benefit only,” said Nariender Thapa. Thapa said, “After sometime, I was told that the AIFF did not allow the players to play in the finals. Now, there is a lot of difference between convincing and asking permission. Had the officials have pressurised the officials at that time; we could have easily defeated the Assam team. The officials failed to convince the AIFF.” On other hand, Harjinder Singh, former captain of the Indian football team also stood his professional mate on the issue. “You are a part of the state that is producing three to four players (on an average) every year for the nation’s team. Not only in sub- junior level but also in the junior and senior level. Chandigarh is not a state that has nothing to contribute in the Indian football. If the officials had approached the AIFF through proper channel and with right aim, the AIFF would have allowed the players to play in the finals. The city team faced defeat against that of Assam in their last league match, so they were psychologically down and presence of Arjit and Daniel surely had helped the team to win the title as they both are the main suppliers of the ball,” added Harjinder Singh. On the issue of apathy of the officials that led the players travel back on aisles, the coach of the CFA said, “I have no words on the issue, is this a way to treat the players. It is due to these players, that the officials stand in various meetings with their head high and in return, they are getting ‘nothing’ but apathy. Instead of receiving them or awarding them honours, they are being made to suffer,” said Harjinder. |
