UID enumeration from July 1

The Municipal Corporation (MC) will commence house-to-house enumeration to cross-check the data entered in the national population register (NPR) from July 1, which will continue till March 31, 2013. On the completion of the enumeration process, the next phase of the nationwide programme to issue a unique identification card (UID) will be taken up.

Despite incentives, fewer men opt for vasectomy

Kisan Mela concludes
5,000 fruit saplings sold
Ludhiana, March 22
The Nutrition Garden Project of Punjab Agricultural University to promote horticulture in the state has got good response from farmers. More than 5,000 saplings of various fruits were sold in two-day Kisan Mela. Kinnow, peach, sweet oranges and lemon plants were the main attractions of the farmers. Gurbax Singh Kahlon, head of horticulture department, said most of the farmers bought these plants for domestic use.

Agricultural literature attracted farmers at the PAU Kisan Mela as the university sold over three lakh books and 700 persons opted for monthly subscription in two days.

This time it was flash mob with a difference
Ludhiana, March 22
Students take part in a flash mob organised by an NGO to promote reading. A flash mob piqued the attention of curious onlookers at PAU near Thapar Hall on the second day of PAU Kisan Mela. Instead of grabbing the attention by dancing, which is usually done at a flash mob, about 30 students started reading at the place, out of the blue. Underlining the need to read books, the group freezed for 10 minutes reading books under the theme - “Readers are Leaders”.

Principles of ethical hacking discussed

The GGN Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT) organised a seminar on “Ethical hacking and its associated career opportunities” for the students of the MCA and that of the BCA, here on Thursday. Parminder Singh, technical head of an institute, was the resource person for the day. He explained that an ethical hacker is a computer and network expert who attacks a security system on behalf of its owners, seeking vulnerabilities that a malicious hacker could exploit. He elaborated that an ethical hacker is required in an organisation to test a security system, and report problems instead of taking advantage of them. — TNS

Photo studio owner hangs himself
Ludhiana, March 22
A 55-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his shop located on the Rahon road here today. The victim has been identified as Roor Singh. He was running a photo studio.

Two held on murder charge
Phillaur, March 22
The Phillaur police has arrested two accused identified as Bahadur Singh and Jarnail Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib district for allegedly murdering a truck driver Mangal Singh near Lassarra Village in Phillaur subdivision few days ago. They had snatched a scrap-loaded truck from the deceased, killed him, and threw his body in the nearby fields and sped away along with the scrap-loaded truck, the police said.


Sports bodies reach a compromise

Two city-based sports associations-Punjab Kurash Association (PKA) and the District Badminton Association (DBA)- that were at loggerheads over holding a national martial arts competition at Shastri Badminton Hall, Guru Nanak Stadium, eventually reached a compromise on the issue. The event will now be organised at Shastri Hall on March 24 and March 25.
