Bollywood sons, Punjabi soil
The cast and crew of Bollywood movie Son of Sardar is absolutely relishing the Punjabi hospitality…not to miss the butter chicken and the dal makhani
Jasmine Singh

Yash Chopra’s fascination for the exotic locales of Switzerland; Karan Johar’s love for the plush hangouts of New York…we take a detour…sprawling green and golden fields, old heritage buildings and a lot of rustic flavour of Punjab.

Bollywood’s discovered a new destination and guess every third movie has a bit of it here and there. So here in Patiala, in a remote village, perched on three old manjis (wooden beds) are a group of familiar looking people. We have seen them somewhere, especially the gentleman with long hair and the one in turban. Inching closer to the group, we are pleasantly surprised to see Ajay Devgnn dressed in a turban, Sanjay Dutt with long hair, Vindu Dara Singh and Mukul Dev in the traditional pajama kurta! This is the team of the under-production movie Son of Sardar, which has been shooting in Patiala for quiet sometime now.

The group laughs, cracks a joke and gulps down huge glasses of lassi; they relax, stretch their backs and are ready to share what they call an amazing experience. Son of Sardar, directed by Ashwini Dheer features Ajay Devgnn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Juhi Chawla, Vindu Dara Singh, Mukul Dev and lot of other well-known names from the industry. The movie captures the relationship of two families, with a good throw of love and action. Says the actor and also the producer of the film, Ajay Devgnn, “this movie can be watched with the entire family. I have enjoyed working in Punjab; it is always great to shoot here. Almost 90 per cent of the movie has been shot in Patiala and the rest in London as well as Chandigarh.” One really has to observe Ajay closely to see how easily and neatly he has slipped into the role of a sardar. “We have a person on the set who ties the turban for us. We are not required to speak chaste Punjabi, so picking up Punjabi hasn’t been that difficult,” he says.

Next in line is Bigg Boss Vindu Dara Singh, who plays Sanjay Dutt’s younger brother. “It is like homecoming for me and I like the fact that my co-stars enjoy working in Punjab,” he adds giving us a little insight into the movie. “We are three brothers Sanjay Dutt, Mukul and I, who have a younger sister Sonakshi. Son of Sardar is a family drama with well-executed action.”

The cast and crew has been shooting day and night; back-to-back scenes, fight sequences and dances. Not to forget, they are also gorging on butter chicken and dal makhani. Sanjay Dutt, whom we met some days ago at the IGP Golf Tournament in Chandigarh, plays the elder brother in the Sandhu family. Sanjay, a Punjabi himself, is absolutely enjoying the experience of shooting in Punjab; loving all the hospitality. “It is a total de-stressor for me to shoot here with no constant ringing of the phone or any meetings,” he says, looking at others for approval. The host of Bigg Boss Season 5 would love to host yet another season if he is asked to. “The contestants were like a family for me, I would try to hear their problems and advice them,” says Sanjay Dutt, who will be seen playing a real-life character, Sharman Munjha from Porbander. “When I was doing serious roles, audiences wanted me to do a bit of comedy and now after comedy they want me to do some serious stuff. So, this one is for them.” Are we mistaken or everyone looks a bit chubby here? Laughs Vindu, “We all seem to have put on some weight, thanks to the desi ghee dishes. But everyone is a health freak here, so exercise is a must for all.”

All in the dreams
After directing and writing successful TV shows Boogie Woogie, Shatranj and Kacchi Kandh, Navneet Choujar moved abroad for higher goals. On a visit to India after almost 14 years, we catch up…
Jasmine Singh

Why do we have so many interesting stories, tales of valour, bravery and adventure around us? Someone just decided to pick up his bag, spin a fire in the heart and went around doing something he had always wanted to — Navneet Choujar wouldn’t just sit, wait and brood over things in life.

He rather had the nerve to tell Raman Kumar, the writer-director of popular television serial Tara, that he could do a better job with writing! And there he was, scribbling dialogues on paper…this was the beginning of his tale of adventure. In Chandigarh to announce Dream Girl 2012, a popular beauty pageant that explores various cultures around the country, he shares with us excerpts from his journey.

Years later, after directing and writing his successful TV shows Boogie Woogie, Shatranj, Kacchi Kandh, Navneet’s story of life has fallen on an unknown lane. He is visiting India almost after fourteen years. Lots of stories to expect!

“I realised very soon that if I had to chase my dreams and passions, I had to take a leap. I went to Australia and decided to make a movie. I was advised against it, but how can an adventure stop without starting,” he softly smiles with his eyes. His efforts paid off and Nanveet is all set to launch his maiden English movie Snakes and Ladders, which has been made with an Australian cast. “It was a deliberate move to take up international actors because no matter what I would have done, it would still have been an international project. My actors are from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Australia. The whole feel of the movie is very Hollywood-like. It will be released by Echelon Studios USA, I hope they do a good job,” says Navneet, who thoroughly believes in life taking its course unassumingly.

The good news is that Hollywood has turned its radars towards India, seeing the growing market? “They are, at the same time they are still skeptical about taking writers and directors from India. There can be one odd Shekhar Kapur only,” this time he laughs.

Dream 2012 - another beauty pageant? “Dreams 2010 was one of the popular events I organised. This time I decided to do something like this in India, where we would provide girls from rural areas a chance to groom themselves and be on par with girls from the city,” says Navneet.

Dream move

A brainchild of two cousins, Navneet Choujar, director of NTV Australia and Rajesh Chadha, CEO of Raag Visuals, Dream Girl 2012 is not just a beauty pageant, but also explores various cultures around the country. The participants won’t just be picked on the basis of their looks, but also their personality and confidence. They will undergo professional grooming sessions before the final event.

There will be sub-pageants for several of the participants who will be presented with gift vouchers, clothes, electronic gadgets and even domestic/international return tickets. The winner, the Dream Girl 2012, will get the chance of a lifetime to visit Bollywood, meet the biggest stars and watch them shoot (all expenses paid).

Registration of participants will begin on March 22 and close on May 31.

Two to Tango
Vasudha Gupta

Sometimes it is sheer love for music that tends to bind two people together. Such is the case of Denis Plante and David Jacques. It was no other name than David’s that Denis had heard when he went out on a search for a passionate musician. Although their instruments are as different as chalk and cheese, it has been the sheer love for music that has bound them together.

In Chandigarh for the closing of the Mois De La Francophonie, organised by Alliance Française, the duo say they perform their creations around the world. His sea-green eyes move into oblivion as Denis Boreal starts talking about his life partner Bandoneon. “It still holds the capacity to amuse me,” he says. Though a trained jazz and tango dancer, his tete-a-tete with the Bandoneon began when he formed an orchestra and started playing fifteen years ago. “Playing the Bandoneon is very technical, it’s like an angry bull,” he smiles.

Playing the Bandoneon is tougher for any musician as it does not involve visual relation. “It’s tough to play when you can’t see your hands,” he says. On his maiden visit to India, Denis has played in over 100 concerts creating musical friendships with David across the world. “It’s like playing doubles tennis and needs a lot of understanding,” he says.

Coming from a family trained in traditional folk music from renaissance period, it was Denis’s sensibilities that drew him to improvisation in jazz, classical and folk together. Talking about fusion and its impact on the music industry, he says, “Music has to be respected as an art form and it’s equally important to know its roots.” Shifting focus, we move to the marble-eyed David Jacques. Having completed his doctor’s degree in early music performance from the University of Montreal, his zeal for the stringed instruments began at the age of five. “I have loved playing banjo, mandolin and the sitar in the past. The reason for still choosing the guitar is primarily its ability to fuse with all other instruments on stage,” he shares with us. Despite his affinity with the guitar, it has been only in the last five years that his anxiety on stage has gone down. “Now, it’s more of a fun activity,” he says. Talking about whether academics has an impact on learning musical instruments, an intelligent answer takes over, “There is no doubt that when you work and work on an instrument, academics does not make a difference; a regularised pattern of study helps build contacts, which tend to shape the career,” he says.

Fort-right
Check out the festival on old forts

Why no attention is being paid to the forts, why people haven’t been sensitized towards the heritage of the country and why even the government authorities have an indifferent approach—a number of important questions will be answered during the two-day festival addressing the imperiled condition of forts of India beginning from March 23.

An initiative taken by GS Channi and Gyan Dev, the seminar will be attended by famous archaeologists, architects and historians of India. The seminar is the spin off from series of films that the duo has made featuring the forts of India. Also, the films will be screened every evening during the festival at Tagore Theatre. The seminars will be held at the UT guest house.

Amita Baig, a renowned heritage consultant who has worked for the restoration of various prominent buildings, will address the seminars. Young architects from Delhi will also share their knowledge on modern ways of restoring forts. —TNS

Law of success
Vasudha Gupta

Saurabh Garg, 25, a young lawyer practising in the Supreme Court, was invited to the Bar of England and Wales in October 2011. Saurabh was invited to the Bar by the honourable society of the Inner Temple, which has notable alumni, including MK Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, to its credit.

This young lad, who has his own law firm, has studied Intellectual Property Law in the London School of Economics. In his endeavour to understand the legal system, Saurabh coordinated the UILS Law and Technology Seminar as chief co-ordinator and represented the univesity at Criminal Law Forum, Bhopal.

Motivational factor

I have always aimed to do something for my nation. I wanted to come back to India to open an organisation that works on issues like illiteracy, poverty and population. I want to improve myself every day. For me, learning something new everyday is the key.

Feathers in the cap

I received the Best Student Advocate award at an International Moot Court competition in 2008. I have written several research papers that have been published in prestigious journals. I was the only Indian to study at the Bar in England and secure an internship with the International Bar Association, London. In my pursuit to specialise in mediation, I underwent training to be an accredited mediator.

Strengths and weaknesses

I am focused, optimistic and a confident person. I think my weakness is that I get aggressive and impatient when it comes to getting work done.

Flipside of being an achiever

It can lead to have fewer friends. If a person during his interaction with his friends tries not to make the other person insecure, then he can keep the friendship going. The problem only comes when the other person feels that he is being looked down upon. People tend to become envious, judgmental and start expecting a lot from you.

Words of wisdom

My sincere advice is to follow your heart in whatever you want to do in life. One may face opposition from the people around but they’ll be fine once they see you happy. Having said that, I believe that it’s not aptitude but attitude that determines the altitude.

A city truly beautiful
Satish Narula

This region, specially Chandigarh, is the best when it comes to gardens and greens. But here also, there is a time when these are at their best. And that time is approaching fast. If you want your friends and relatives to visit this city, to show them where you live, call them in the second week of April. That is the best time to be around.

The winter is over, the trees, shrubs and climbers are at their best at this time. Immediately after the festival of Holi in March, normally there are a few dry days when leaves fall. And what follows is a feast for the eyes. This region comes to life. The new growth starts appearing as if to give the message of a new life.

The first to come to life is Ficus infectoria, the Pilkhan. In Chandigarh, a large area is under this tree, grown as avenue tree crossing length of the city passing through sector 20 and 21, including part of Madhya Marg. It sheds leaves and attains new attire. The new growth starts with a copper red, turning to yellow-green and ultimately to deep green. The colour transition is so much distinct and simultaneous that all the avenues look a mix of different hues. This is the time when you can see the nature in different moods. The texture of the leaves is also very tender and soft.

Next in line is Scleichera trijuga, the Kusum. The young emerging leaves are all red, almost transparent. The plantation spreads throughout the city. The tree also gives colour to Madhya Marg near the Government College. When the new red leaves emerge, the tree is almost leafless and thus the tree gets all red hue.

It’s not that green is not beautiful. The green of Swietenia mahagoni is very refreshing. The tree grows to a great height and all that is visible at that time is fresh growth of light green leaves. The tree avenue passes through sector 18 and 21from one end to the other, till the industrial area. One such avenue also runs in southern sectors. Then follows Erythrina indica with red blooms, Tecoma argentia with leafless tree with all sparkling yellow blooms, Cassia fistula (Amaltas) with deep yellow clusters of blooms hanging down and Patrea volubilis climber with star shaped indigo blue blooms, also appearing on leafless climber. So, city dwellers, get ready for the heavenly sight of the city beautiful.

Doc Talk
How sweet!
Dr Vikas Sharma

Chocolate is no threat to your skinThis definitely comes as good news for chocolate lovers. No more worrying about the calorie count or the tiny pimples that appear overnight after the sweet indulgence!

Chocolate is no more likely to cause pimples than a non-chocolate treat. There is no evidence that chocolate triggers blemishes. In fact, a new study suggests that there is a connection between your diet and complexion. The fact is that acne-causing ingredient isn’t cocoa, but the problem is sugar and other high-glycemic food that the body burns fast. And guess what? Dark chocolate is actually a low-glycemic food. But milk chocolate has a slightly higher glycemic index, so all chocolate lovers now know that they just need a minor fine-tuning of their taste buds to enjoy both tasty chocolate and good skin. So, to have both yummy choco and good looks you need to know the Glycemic Index (GI) of the chocolates, select the one with low GI, provided you do not eat up the entire box.

From one interesting myth to another, how many times have you been told by your grandmother or mother to avoid sugar if you don’t want to see the acne.

In recent years the medical community has largely dismissed the idea that any particular food causes skin blemishes. New studies, however, are beginning to show a link between breakouts and diets heavy in high-glycemic foods, including highly refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and potatoes, as well as sweets like doughnuts and jelly beans. It does appear from the initial studies that there maybe a role for reducing refined carbohydrates in both treating and avoiding acne. After this sugary delight, here is another one, studies show that a low-sugar, low-refined-carbohydrate diet that reduces the level of insulin in the blood and also lowers the level of androgens, a hormone that stimulates the glands in the skin to produce oil and, hence, acne erupts.

While you needn’t fret that one chocolate caramel will end up on your chin in the form of a big pimple, you’re best off limiting the total number of chocolates you consume and sticking to dark chocolate. Not only does dark chocolate have less fat, it has antioxidants that can help reduce blood pressure and confer other health benefits.

Heart smart!
Kandla Nijhowne

Don’t scowl! You needn’t be a bed ridden patient to read further. It would be good to remember that food related to the heart’s good health is beneficial to one and all. Healthy food consists of bright coloured fruit and veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts and soya products. Foods containing antioxidants and fibre would also help your heart, irrespective of your age or condition. I bring you a recipe where the flavours of fresh mint and paneer enliven a healthy brown rice. You can even toss in any leftovers to create a satisfying meal.

Method

Bring the stock to a boil. Add rice and bring to a simmer; cover, reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 4 minutes. Heat oil in a separate pot and lightly toss the peas with either jeera or a herb of your choice. Add the spring onion and crumbled paneer along with the salt and pepper. Add tomatoes and chilli powder. Add all the vegetables into the rice, cover, reduce heat and cook until the peas are hot and the rice has absorbed the liquid. (about 6 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in the walnuts and mint. (Nijhowne is a Chandigarh-based culinary expert)

Neck-to-neck
Watch out for the neckline this summer. It can make or mar your style quotient
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Spring is here and it is time you show off some bare necks and trimmed waist-lines. From statement-making prints to cool new colour combos, discover tons of new outfits and necklines for the warm weather ahead. And trust us, you’ll find something you just can’t wait to put on. Talking of neck styles they are the very basis of a good outfit, so we list what is going to be hot in the coming season. Boat neck is one trend, as it showcases the beauty of the shoulders. As for the designers, they are playing with the versions of this trend where necklines can go as deep as you wish. “During summer, neck-lines are an important tool to woo the customers,” says Ankush Mahajan, manager, Whistles, Sector 17, Chandigarh.

Spelling trend he says, “U, C and boat necks are the hottest trends for this season and other than that, we are also seeing necklines with bow-ties and side-knots for an added embellishment.”

Though halter-necks have been in and out of fashion for sometime now, we did catch some mannequins wearing them. Sporty, cool and stylish, when worn with jeans they can make your neck and chest look long and thin. So, halters can be a good choice if you want the attention on your neck! “V-neck is another trend for summer. This is deep and one of the reasons why quite popular despite being ordinary. Another reason for its popularity is that it gives the illusion of a long and thin neck.

Other than this, boat neck is sure a winner. Sleeveless or cap sleeve tops in boat neck are ideal styles, but one must avoid full or three-quarter boat necks,” says fashion designer Nidhi from brand Walnut.

Boudoir fashion has seen a revival for Spring/Summer 2012. Sheer slinky fabrics, lace trimming, ruffles and revealing necklines as also splits are the trends; in this we would also see scoop necks. This oldies fashion is back! In this style, cap sleeves scoop tops are the best to look stylish and thin.

So, pick your style and look stylish!

Kunal Khemu to marry Soha?

Contrary to rumours, Kunal Khemu is in no rush to marry girlfriend Soha Ali Khan.

“We are very open about our relationship. But we keep getting asked if there is a next big step. For now, we are in a happy place and there is no engagement or marriage being planned,” he says.

But does she object to his love-making scenes? “I have to specifically discuss those scenes with her. I make sure that she is aware of love-making scenes so there is no misunderstanding,” he adds. His latest film Blood Money is currently being shown in theatres.

Iconic collaboration
“Sometimes you have to wait for greatness,” says Katy Perry about the much talked about duet

Katy Perry has revealed that the much-talked about duet with good friend Rihanna will have to wait, as they want to take their time on the project and release an “iconic” collaboration. The pop star pals have been open about their desire to tackle the charts together, but the I Kissed A Girl hitmaker has high hopes for the track and is keen to emulate the success of the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin’s 1985 hit. “We’ve collaborated on a lot of things, but just not songs yet. It’s one of those things that’s got  so much build up that we have to deliver,” she said. “I want it to be like that Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin song Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves, not like (Shakira and Beyonce song) Beautiful Liar. “But I definitely want to do something that is so iconic. (Rihanna’s) kind of busy too. We’re both busy but we planted the seed two years ago. How disappointed would you be if that song came out and it’s no good? Sometimes you have to wait for greatness,” she added.

Learning goes on...

Courteney Cox feels that her spilt from husband David Arquette has made the two of them “better parents” to their little daughter. The Scream stars separated in 2010, but they regularly meet up to take young Coco on days out — and she admits it feels like “a big deal” if they go more than a week without seeing each other. The actress is convinced the split has improved their parenting capabilities to their seven-year-old daughter, as they are able to talk through their issues more easily now they lead different lives. “We weren’t really dealing with what needed to be dealt with, which was how to stay married and be true intimate partners,” she said in an interview. “Now we’re separate we’re able to talk about all our resentments and the things we should have listened to each other on. We kind of know where it went wrong, and how we felt ourselves drifting apart,” she added.

“So now we have this really great, open relationship. We speak to each other all the time; if we don’t see each other in a week it’s a big deal.

“And we’re better parents to Coco. We’re more patient with each other,” she said. The actress also opens up about how the stars parent their daughter. “I’m probably not as good a disciplinarian as David, but I relate to her emotions. Mind you, I’m frightened of the teen years. Coco’s got a very strong will, and I’m a little afraid of that,” she added. — ANI

Splitsville for Katie and Alex

Katie Price was granted divorce from her second husband Alex Reid over his “unreasonable behaviour”, in a court proceeding that lasted just 55 seconds. A judge at the High Court in London awarded the glamour model-turned-businesswoman a decree nisi.

Neither party was present for the pronouncement of the decree by District Judge Anne Aitken, who ruled the marriage had “irretrievably broken down.” The estranged couple will have to wait until five to six weeks before their divorce is officially formalised with a decree absolute. In a question-and-answer style divorce document Price was asked if the behaviour of the respondent — Alex Aristides Reid — was continuing. She put a cross in the box for ‘yes’.

No information was included in documents made public today about the “unreasonable behaviour”. In the section asking her to enter her occupation, Price describes herself as “TV personality, author, businesswoman”.

The couple married in Las Vegas in February 2010, shortly after cagefighter Reid finished a stint on Celebrity Big Brother. They had been dating for around seven months when they tied the knot.

In January last year, the 33-year-old mother of three — also known as Jordan — confirmed she had separated from Reid. — ANI

Leading The Honest Life
Everything in this book will be something meaningful that I’ve incorporated into our lives, says Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is set to release The Honest Life, a how-to handbook based on her mission of creating a natural, non-toxic life for her family. “It’s totally crazy but amazing,” she said. “I’m not extreme. This book is for people who are in the middle but want to create a healthier life, like me,” she said.

The actress recently launched her first business, The Honest Company, with business partner and co-author Christopher Gavigan. The 30-year-old’s book will detail her life as a mother and entrepreneur, seeking to give her children, Honor, 3 and Haven, 7 months, a better and safer start in life.

The Honest Life will offer tips on how to create a non-toxic home, from design tips to some of Alba’s favorite family recipes. “Honor’s favorite meatball recipe will be in there,” she said.

“And I always hide flax seeds in everything,” she explained, keeping it healthy but still tasty for her two girls. The book will also include beauty tips including “homemade” treatments to incorporate into your routine. Among them: simple, fun DIY family projects (Alba and husband Cash Warren refinished furniture for daughter Haven’s room), tips on making sure your home is filled with only the purest of materials and inexpensive ways to find your own authentic style. “It will be easy and fun and I want it to be really colourful,” she said.

“I’m a crazy foodie. I love doing projects with my kids. Everything in this book will be something meaningful that I’ve incorporated into our lives. I wanted some kind of handbook with all the information I was consuming so I could apply it in a practical way,” she added. —ANI

Value of discipline

Actor-producer Akshay Kumar, who spends quality time with his 10-year-old son Aarav despite his busy schedule, says that he wants to keep him away from films. “He is too young. I want my son to be away from films. I want him to enjoy childhood. I want him to go and play football. Go on the beach and enjoy life,” Akshay said.

The Bollywood star also revealed that he leads a disciplined life and doesn’t bend his rules regardless of his hectic shooting schedule. “I don’t enjoy partying. I don’t understand why they play music so loud. I like to sleep early. I go off to sleep by 9 to 9.30. I get up by 4.30 in the morning,” the 44-year-old said.

“Twinkle sleeps by 8.45 in the night and thank god this is the only similarity that I and Twinkle share. Life becomes very calm when your partner sleeps at the same time. We share this one thing in common,” he said.

Candid conversation

You think you know Angad Hasija? Think again. Angad Hasija, popular as Alekh of Bidaai and Shankar of Phulwa, loves to do crazy things, play pranks, go to gym and what not. In a candid talk, we discover more about this actor…

What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about my work and gym. Work because I love it and I never get bored of it. Gym as I am a fitness freak. I like to stay healthy and fit. So whenever I have free time, I always make sure that I workout and keep myself fit and toned.

In one line how would you describe yourself?

I am an honest, simple and caring guy.

Craziest thing you ever did in life…

I wish if there was one to tell you. I have no many crazy stories and pranks that I have played on people. Like for instance, during Bidaai days, Kinshuk and I played a prank on Sara Khan. There was a journalist on the sets but Sara didn’t know about it. So we asked him to help us play a prank on her. He asked him to beg Sara to marry him and say that he is her biggest fan. He did so and Sara initially ignored him. But later, she started panicking. Shortly, she was in all tears. It was after having a lot of fun that we finally told her about the prank.

Tell us something that people do not know about you.

I am a guy who believes in doing good and Karma. I am very spiritual. Also, I like to read horror novels.

What is the one mantra that you completely swear by?

No matter, how tough the time is always believe in yourself and the almighty God. And you shall find the right path.

Interesting incident with a fan was…

Once I was coming out of the gym and one uncle stopped me and asked, “You won some award recently, right? We threw a party in your honour.” First, I thought it was a joke. But then his son came and showed me the pictures of the party where they had my name written in the background. I was very surprised to see it. I couldn’t believe that somebody actually celebrated it for me. — HRM

Actor Abigail Jain is not perturbed about rumours that she is dating Himanshu Kohli, lead of her Channel V show Humse Hai Life. Such rumours don’t bother her. She claims that people talk without fire or smoke. She is glad the show is getting appreciation and her work is being recognised.

Replacement theory
