Fun time for children
Dera Bassi, March 18 Students were divided into four groups of 25 each for the meditation sessions. Each group had a half-hour session. In the organic farming sessions, children were asked to avoid junk food like chocolate, chips, pasta, sweetmeat and fried food. They were told to switch to fresh fruit, salads, vegetables, oats, brown rice, ‘roti’, ‘bajra’ and ‘jowar’. In the adventure session, children crossed a rivulet using ropes. A session on horse grooming and training was also conducted. In the fun and games workshop, children played with frisbees. Storytelling and art classes were also conducted. |

Financial literacy programme for farmers
Lalru, March 18 PK Jain, chief lead district manager, told the farmers that the financial literacy scheme was being implemented in all villages having a population of above 2,000. TR Gulati, director of the Farmers’ Training Centre at Sirhind, appealed to the farmers to start organic farming. He said farmers’ clubs should be set up in every village. Inderjit Sangwan, NABARD manager, spoke about the welfare schemes for farmers in detail. She requested the farmers to take the maximum benefit of the schemes. Bank officials said they provided hassle-free loans to farmers. Managers of various banks were present. DK Gupta, senior manager of the local PNB branch, welcomed the guests. |

Jewellers protest against new tax
Ambala, March 18 Hundreds of manufacturing units and around 70 major outlets would be affected by the levying of the new tax on non-branded ornaments. The general secretary of the Haryana Sarafa Association, Gyan Chand Aggarwal, and local unit president Satpal Jain said the government had ruined their business. The president of the Jewellery Manufacturers Association, Pala Ram, opposed the move. They said most manufacturing units would be closed if the tax was levied. |

Fatehgarh Sahib, March 18 Addressing lawyers after the inauguration, Justice Jain appreciated the efforts of the Bar Association and said the library would benefit young lawyers. He called upon them to take the profession as a challenge and work with dedication and honesty. |
Compensation denied
Chandigarh, March 18 The complainant, LM Dwivedi of Shimla had filed a complaint against Swami Automobiles and Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, alleging that he had deposited Rs 50,000 with the dealer for booking a Scorpio LXI/red on June 30. The dealer offered delivery of the vehicle in September. As the expected time of delivery was in ‘shraads’ which was an inauspicious time according to Hindu mythology, the complainant did not wish to take the car at that time. The complainant applied for refund and bought a Honda vehicle on October 19. Swami Auto refunded Rs 51,597 to the complainant, including interest. Complainant contended that the dealer and company must pay compensation, punitive damages and litigation expenses for indulging in unfair trade practice and hurting his religious sentiments. In reply, Pankaj Chandgothia, advocate for the dealer, stated that the complainant had specified red as his colour choice for the vehicle, which was not regularly available. No commitment regarding time of delivery was made. When the vehicle was offered, the complainant declined to take delivery citing his religious beliefs. Chandgothia contended that the dealer could not be held guilty of deficiency in service. The forum, comprising its president Lakshman Sharma and member Madhu Mutneja, dismissed the complaint, "finding no merits in the allegations". |

Hotel manager robbed of cash, mobile phone
Chandigarh, March 18 The incident happened when Sunil got off
the auto-rickshaw and started walking towards his residence in Ramdarbar. Four youngsters confronted him and threatened him at knife point. The four youngsters asked the hotel manager to
give all the cash and belongings he had. They then fled from the scene with the cash and his mobile phone. Inspector
Jaspal Singh, SHO, Sector 31 Police Station, said all the four suspects
who robbed the hotel manager had been identified by the complainant on
the basis of the record of criminals available with the police. “They
will be arrested very soon,” he said. A case of robbery has been
registered at the police station. |

Youth held for kidnapping, raping minor
Panchkula, March 18 In his complaint lodged at the Sector-20 police station, the father of the girl alleged that Manish had kidnapped his daughter, who studied in class XI at the government school. He added that when his daughter did not return from school, the family searched for her in the village and Panchkula. He suspected that the accused had taken his daughter to some place near Delhi. The police raided several places in the town and the National Capital. It recovered them from Narela, near Delhi. After medical examination of the minor, the police booked Manish on charges of kidnapping and raping the minor. The police said the girl said she had gone with Manish on her own. The police sent the girl to the Nari Niketan. The accused was produced in court, which remanded him to judicial custody. |

Chandigarh, March 18‘ Same format, shorter version, loud music, glamour and entertainment like the IPL (Indian Premier League) but no spectators made the ongoing World Series Hockey (WSH), a monotonous tourney not only in city but also in Punjab. The organisers might have left no stone unturned to make the tourney a success but failed to attract the crowd even from the cities like Chandigarh and Jalandhar, where hockey is known to be the backbone of all the sports. But when it comes to cricket, the IPL with the help of same entertainment and same ideas, hog the limelight. The reason is well known to everyone but the question arises, where the ‘politics and profit’ will lead the sport. These days, a spectator thinks twice for spending Rs 50 for a hockey match while on other hand, Rs 350 is a minimal amount for a cricket T-20 cricket match. On the present status of the sports, The Tribune team has come across some sports lovers, taking their opinion on slowly vanishing craze of an old game like hockey. |
Himmat, Jasprabh declared best athletes
Chandigarh, March 18 As many as 28 events that included relays races, javelin throw, triple jump, sack race, three-legged race were organised in a two-day event. In the competition, about 100 doctors participated out of which around 84 won the top honours. Padam Shree and Arjuna Awardee hockey Olympian, Charanjit Singh, distributed the prizes among winners and congratulated them. |
Shernik thrashes Siddharth in tennis tourney
Chandigarh, March 18 On the second day of the tourney, Siddarth went down against Shrenik in a tough clash. Both the players displayed a good quality strokes served with volley technique. The match was equal at 7-7 before Shernik broke Siddarth’s serve in the 15th game and took the lead. Later, he wrapped up the match with his serve in the final set by 9-7. In another 80-minute long clash, Shivam Vij overcame his opponent, Sahishnu Sharma. He took an early lead of 4-2 but Sahishnu came back in the match and levelled the score at 4-4 and later managed to take it to 6-6. But in the tiebreaker, Shivam displayed kept his calm and won the match 7-6 (7-4). In another matche of boys’ (U-10) category, Pranav Chopra defeated Dhariya (7-5) and Sarbjot defeated Aryan (6-4) to move to the next round of the competition. Jaskaran defeated Abhinav by 6-4 in the last match of the same category. CCA Haryana defeat BTS-48

Chandigarh, March 18 In the fourth match of the competition, the winning side defeated the rivals by nine wickets. After winning the toss, the BTS elected to bat first and set a target of 78 runs before getting bundled out in the 17th over. Harish Sharma was the main scorer for the team as he contributed 20 runs in the team’s total while his teammate, Vijay Bhasin, contributed 15 runs. For the bowling side, Romi was the pick of the bowlers after he took 3 for 7 while his counterpart Baljeet Singh took 2 for 4. In reply, the team of the CCA Haryana achieved the target in the 15th over after loosing one wicket. Former international players, Rakesh Jolly and Sunil Bhel, took the team to victory and remained unbeaten on 39 off 40 and 11off and 17, respectively. Surinder Singh Baijji was the other main scorer for the team after he contributed 21 off 34. |
Satinder lifts Kesri title in wrestling
Chandigarh, March 18 Dinesh Baba of the Chandigarh Police Akhara bagged the title of Chandigarh Kumar, after defeating Ram Phal of Rohtak while Jaspreet of Sector 42 Coaching Centre won Chandigarh Bhim title after defeating Ajaib Singh of Hoshiarpur. The Kesri title went to Satinder after he defeated Sudhir. Earlier, in the sub-junior category of boys (42kg) Rohtas defeated Virender and Soni overcame Keshav whereas in the 46 kg group Vijender lifted the title after defeating Jivesh. Chandigarh, March 18 Parveen of the mechanical engineering department was declared as the second best athlete in boys group while Priya Ravi was adjudged as second the best athlete in the girls category. During the tourney, Saurabh bagged the best cyclist title while Prabhjot Singh was declared as the best athlete in the final year along with Vishal Garg who won best athlete in the sophomore students. Parveen won the best athlete in the third year title. In the girl’s category, Shivam Gaur and Ripudaman Singh won the top honours.
