300 patients given spectacles

Dera Bassi, March 17
Ram Leela committee, Dera Bassi, organised a free medical check-up camp in Ramleela ground, here today. Over 1,000 patients were examined free. Along with that eye operations were also conducted during the camp. A team of doctors from a Dera Bassi hospital visited the camp and checked the patients. The team of doctors included Dr DS Verma, Dr SS walia, Dr PC Goyal, Dr RS Rana, Dr PC Singla, Dr Gaurv Goyal, Dr Brijesh Sharma.

Over 30 eye patients were operated and 300 were provided with free spectacles.

Award ceremony marks end of ICT-2012

ICT-2012, a national conference on the “Role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Societal Applications and Industrial Applications” concluded in the campus of host college Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering & Technology, Dera bassi, on Friday with a valedictory and certificate awarding ceremony.

Delegates from various reputed colleges of North India visited in the conference. Dr Manjit Singh, Director, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh, chaired the valediction ceremony. The conference was inaugurated by Dr MK Surrapa, director, IIT Ropar.

Newly married woman commits suicide

Fatehgarh Sahib, March 17
A newly married young woman allegedly committed suicide at the residence of her in-laws. The deceased has been identified as Gurjeet Kaur, 22, wife of Gurpreet Singh belonging to Badla village, Baddi Pathana. The mother of the deceased, Jaswant Kaur lodged an FIR with the Bassi Pathana police in this regard. She also alleged that the in-laws of her daughter used to harass her unnecessarily. She also alleged that when she reached her in-laws, there was no one at their house and her daughter’s body was lying.

The police brought the body to the Civil Hospital for the postmortem examination and handed over to her parents.

Forensic science symposium concludes

A two-day national symposium on “Education and Research in Forensic Science: Issues and Challenges”, organised by the department of forensic science, Punjabi University, Patiala, concluded here. The symposium provided a forum for deliberation on issues relating to forensic education and research.

Over 200 delegates from all over the country attended this prestigious symposium and deliberated over the main theme of the symposium. Dr Narinder Bhargav, SSP, SBS Nagar, an old student of the department was the chief guest at the valedictory function. He emphasised that the forensic science had played a pivotal role in the criminal justice system, providing crucial information about the evidence to the of fact because the work done by the forensic scientists at the crime scene and in the laboratory often must be used in court.

He said it is important that the training and education of forensic scientists provide a solid scientific background and a broad base in criminalistics.

Residents oppose anti-encroachment drive in Kalka

The team of the town-planning department accompanied with officials of the district administration had to return empty handed yesterday as they failed to demolish more than 58 illegal structures in Anchal Vihar colony near Lohgarh village of Pinjore.

According to the information, the DTP team headed, by Hitesh Sharma and Tehsildar Naresh Jogwal, accompanied with posse of the policemen had to face the stiff resistance from the local residents, who claimed that they had the registry of the plots and appropriate documents with regard to the ownership of the properties.

Meanwhile, the officials of the DTP and that of the local administration said that the construction was illegal and violated the Periphery Act. They said that they had served notices to 58 persons in this regard, recently. If the people failed to demolish their structure on their own within a week they would again come again to demolish these.

It is pertinent to mention here that last year, too, the officials of the DTP had demolished some of the illegal structures in the village.

High Court Judge inspects district courts

Justice RK Garg of the Punjab and Haryana High Court visited the district court complex on an annual inspection, here today.

According to the information, Justice Garg also inspected the functioning of the courts besides checking the annual records and the staff in the court complex. While expressing satisfaction, he also lauded the functioning of the courts and its staff. He also inspected the new building in the court complex.

Later, he also visited the Juvenile court, which is held on every Saturday in Haryana Seeds Corporation in Sector 2.

While appreciating the working of the court, he also listened to the problems being faced by the advocates in the complex.

District and Sessions Judge Anita Chaudhary, Deputy Commissioner Ashima Brar, the DCP Maneesh Chaudhary, ACJM Rakesh Singh, the CJM Gurvinder Kaur and the SDM Sharandeep Kaur Brar were among those present on the occasion.

Man held with 140 injections

Chandigarh, March 17
The police arrested a 35-year-old drug peddler, Sunil, a resident of Sector 25, and recovered 140 injections of buprenorphine ABL-10ml from his possession on Friday night. The recovered injections were to be supplied to drug addicts.

SHO of the Sector 11 police station Gurmukh Singh said earlier also the accused was arrested for drug peddling. “The accused used to sell injections to drug addicts in the locality at a higher price,” said Singh.

The SHO said the shop from where Sunil had procured the injections had been identified and a report would be sent to the UT health department in this regard.

The recovery has forced the Chandigarh Police to take up the matter with the UT health department.

The accused was produced in the court, which sent him to a 14-day remand.

Man convicted

A local court today convicted a Mohali resident of hitting a UT police constable during a naka in 2007.

The court convicted Jatinder Pal, a resident of Mohali, of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty under Section 333 of the IPC. Quantum of sentence will be pronounced on March 20.

As per information, Jatinder had hit constable Karamvir, who was on duty during a naka on the road separating Sectors 40 and 55. Later, the police had registered an FIR on the charges of attempt to murder, but failed to prove charges in the court and the accused was convicted only under Section 333 of the IPC.

Bag stolen

In his complaint, Hira Singh, a resident of Amargarh village, Sangrur, said someone had stolen his bag containing an arms licence, a mobile phone, Rs 20,000 in cash and some documents from his car near Sahib Singh Parking, Sector 17, on Friday.

One held

The police on Friday arrested Narinder, a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh, for consuming liquor at a public place. A case under Section 68-1-14 Excise Act has been registered against him.

Murder accused held

Mohali, March 17
The CIA staff, today, nabbed a dreaded criminal, Gurbhej Singh, who had helped his accomplice Amit Kamboj in escaping from the clutches of the police last month.

Giving details, the SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that Gurbhej Singh alias Lali, along with Gurmel Singh alias Gendu and Anu Dharmiani, wife of Gurmel, Kalu and Sunil, helped in making Kamboj escape, who was taken back to Faridkot after his court hearing in Mohali, here on February 23. Kamoj was accused in murder, robbery and several snatching cases.

“Kamboj was coming back to Fardikot after his court hearing, when Lali along with his four accomplices attacked the police party by putting chilly powder in the eyes of policemen, near Mullanpur Dakhan, and helped Kamoj in running. That time Ritu Kamboj, friend of Amit Kamboj was also with them,” said Bhullar.

Ritu was the same woman, who had burnt the turban of a police official in Mohali courts, a couple of months ago.

A country made pistol and some cartridges were also recovered from Lali’s possession. The police has registered Lali under Sections 25, 54, 59 under 
Arms Act.

The accused was produced in Kharar court today and was sent on two-day police remand.

Robbery accused arrested

Panchkula, March 17
The local police has arrested the second accused from the bus stand at Phagwara in Punjab, today, who was involved in a broad day robbery at a city based realtor in Sector 7, two days ago.

A team of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) arrested the accused, Deepak alias Gora, a resident of Manimajra, when he was about to board a bus. The police was also looking for the third member of the gang identified as Lucky, a resident of Jalandhar, Punjab.

Assistant Commissioner of the Police (crime), Dheeraj Setya, said that so far they had arrested two persons namely Arun Kumar and Deepak, who were involved in the robbery. He added that the police has also recovered the stolen jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh from the two. The police is also working on various leads to arrest the third accused, said he. — TNS

One more arrested in car theft cases

Panchkula, March 17
The local police has arrested one of the remaining accused in the car theft cases registered in the town.

The accused has been identified as Karan Singh alias Karna and is a resident of Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh. Karan was produced in the local court that ordered sent him to judicial custody at Central Jail, Ambala.

The police said that Karna was involved in theft of two cars. The accused was booked cases under Section 379 of the IPC. The police had recovered the two cars. — TNS

One held for trying to break open ATM

The police today arrested Satnam, a resident of Behlana, who tried to break open an ATM on March 6 near MES headquarters, Airport light point.

SHO of the Sector 31 police station Jaspal Singh said the accused was identified through a CCTV footage. The accused is wanted in several theft cases. A case has been registered.

Daksh cruises ahead

In a keenly contested match, Daksh defeated Udgam in boys U-12 category during the opening round of LD Kapoor Memorial YMCA Total Tennis Tournament being held at the YMCA Total Tennis Academy in Sector 10 here today.

Daksh took an early lead of 3-1 against his opponent Udgam who fought back to level the score at 3-3. Both the players played neck to neck tennis till 5-5. In the tie-breaker, Daksh demolished his opponent by displaying solid groundstrokes and wrapped up the tie-break and the match in his favour. The final score was 6-5(7-2).
The top seeds had an easy outing and all seeded players sailed into the second round quite comfortably on the first day of the tournament. More than 50 players participated in both the boys U-10 and U-14 categories.

PCA to open six special coaching centres for budding cricketers

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) will open six special coaching centres for players in the 13 to 15 age group.

The decision to start the PCA special coaching centres for advance training of players in the age group of 13 to 15 was taken after discussions between the technical committee and the forum of district secretaries.

MP Pandove stated that there would be 20 trainees in each centre comprising three openers, one wicket keeper, six middle order batsmen, six fast bowlers and four spinners. In case of non-availability of players in any of the department, one or two adjustments would be made.

The PCA has appointed two selectors from the central pool for each district with one selector to be appointed locally by the district cricket association for trials.

The trials will be conducted at various centres as per the given schedule.

Saupin’s tourney: BTS-48 outplay AG-Haryana Cricket Club

An all-round performance by Vijay Bhasin (80 runs and 3 for 17) enabled BTS to defeat AG Haryana Cricket Club in the third match of Saupin’s 32 Veteran Cricket Tournament (above 50) held today.

After winning the toss, BTS-48 elected to bat first and scored 165 runs for the loss of four wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Vijay Bhasin made 80 runs off 65 balls. Harish Sharma and T Gupta scored 33 and 22 runs off 21 and 26 balls, respectively. For AG-Haryana, Baljeet Bawa was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets by giving away 18 runs.

In reply, AG-Haryana Cricket Club were bundled out for 105 runs with two overs to spare. Baljeet Bawa scored 27 runs off 29 balls while Shetty made 18 runs off 19 balls. For BTS, Parveen Sharma, Vijay Bhasin took three wickets each by giving 17 and 20 runs, respectively, whereas Antaraatam Singh took two wickets by giving 28 runs.

Kedhar guides West Zone to victory

Kedar Jadhav enabled West Zone to defeat East Zone by 108 runs in the first semifinals of the Prof DB Deodhar Trophy being held at the PCA Cricket Stadium here today.

Kedar Jadhav of West Zone was named man of the match. With this win, West Zone have booked a berth in the final. They will take on winners of the North Zone and Central Zone tie at Dharamsala on March 18.

After winning the toss, East Zone skipper decided to field first and his decision boomeranged as West Zone openers Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane put on 84 runs for the first wicket before Rahane was caught by Ishant Jaggi off the bowling of Laxmi Rattan Shukla for 36. Parthiv Patel was the next to go when he was caught by Nadeem off AA Nandi after scoring 69. Thereafter, Kedar Jadhav and Cheteshwar Pujara accumulated 171 runs for the third wicket before Pujara was castled by Shammi Ahmed for 70. Suryakant Yadav also played a quick fire cameo of 21 runs off 11 balls enabling his team to finish the day at 342 for 7 in 50 overs. For East Zone, Shammi Ahmad was the main striker as he scalped four wickets giving away 62 runs. Nandi was another wicket taker who scalped two wickets for 56 runs.

In reply, East Zone got off to a disastrous start as their opener DS Jadhav was trapped in front by medium pacer Unadkat for 2 with the team’s total reading at 2. Ishant Jaggi was the next to go being castled by Iqbal Abdullah for 22 off 31 balls. Abdullah then struck two vital blows when he removed AP Majumdar 21 and Laxmi Rattan Shukla 3 in quick succession to reduce East Zone to 60 for 4 in 14 overs. Saurab Tiwari kept one end up while Iqbal Abdullah was wreaking havoc at the other end. Saurabh hammered an unbeaten century 112 off 95 balls.
