It’s a Holi
Holi Day
If you love celebrating Holi but stop short of playing it because of the rowdyism it might entail, private Holi parties are a good idea

Ekta Kapoor organised a big Holi bash last year
Ekta Kapoor organised a big Holi bash last year.

The colour theory says, splash it all the more on people who are hiding or hibernating. That way, it’s more fun. Hurray! It’s a Holi Holi holiday. In the Capital or B-town, whose Holi bash you attend decides how far you’ve arrived. Breaking the ice and inking every one around couldn’t get easier.

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who love Holi and those that hate Holi. No two ways about it. And those with a splash pool and water guns tell us how they love their date with colours.

Private vs public

The best, perhaps, is also the most obvious. Colour me blue, red, green. “What I like the most about this festival is that you can colour anybody. We make sure that we drag those friends and neighbours around who particularly do not want to be splashed with colour,” Sunny Sheoran, production manager, The Theatre Army, revisits a couple of Holi moments and all the while giving a thumbs-up to private Holi bashes.

This is one festival everybody likes to celebrate in a personal setting. “I cannot even imagine celebrating Holi at any hotel or restaurant or any public place for that matter. The best way out is to get together at your home lawns, society gardens, or any friend’s farmhouse, where there is open space and a personal touch. Private Holi bashes are the best way to have a whale of a time,” opines Guneet Sidhu, economics student, Panjab University. She adds, “That way you know that there will be people whom you can trust. So, you can be yourself and play to the hilt. Otherwise this festival can be quite unpleasant.” Heard that before. Only a few clubs all over the country have dared to host full moon parties in Holi.

Get it right

Most of the times, it’s the memories of last season’s fun- filled days that bring the excitement to celebrate the coming one. Goes without saying, almost everyone has been through their share of dirty Holi moments too. “We’d go out on the streets, visit all our friends one by one before actually gathering at one common ground and spending the rest of the afternoon there,” recalls Ajaypal Gill, student, DAV college. “All you need is open space, garden, good music, sweets, friends and you are ready to go,” he lists the necessities while all set to host this year’s bash at his place. Good music to set the tempo, close bunch of friends to ring in good times and umpteen sweet dishes to top it all. He adds, “I’m planning to host it this time on the terrace with lots of water toys, balloons and of course dry colours.”

There’s no bar scene, clubbing happens only late in the evenings and private dos sound just like the plan.

  • Television queen Ekta Kapoor is renowned for co-hosting Holi parties, which is attended by anybody who is somebody in the small screen world.
  • South Delhi farms are known for some high-on-life Holi parties. Some of the regulars include big business houses.

Image makeover
Kimi Verma sheds her pind-di kudi image for her forthcoming film Ajj De Ranjhey
Jasmine Singh

Kimi Verma Photo: Parvesh Chauhan If one begins to analyse Punjabi movies, the changes in script, technical support, costumes…the elements are shaping up. Save for the fact that when it comes to actresses, we fall short of names as the list begins and ends with two or three names. One of the names that figure on the list is Kimi Verma, the pretty girl from Los Angeles who stars in Manmohan Singh’s Ajj De Ranjhey. And when it comes to the participation of women in Punjabi cinema, actresses are not convinced much.

“Punjabi movies are definitely male actor centric. For that matter Bollywood also has lately begun to explore women-dominated scripts. Back in Punjab, it will take a couple of more years to come up with something like that,” says Kimi, who plays an NRI girl in Ajj De Ranjhey. “Thankfully, I am not playing a pind di kudi that I usually do,” she smiles bringing us to the point where it all started — what role do women have in Punjabi cinema.

“I am happy that I get to do many movies in Punjab despite the fact that I stay in LA. Having said this, I can’t deny that there isn’t much choice in terms of roles.” Kimi is thoughtful and so are we. No reigning Bollywood actresses like Sridevi or Madhuri? Kimi however, has a different take to it.

“There are not enough movies being made here to have a top actress like Bollywood. But I guess ranking is not a good idea as everybody should be given a chance, and the way Punjabi film industry is doing, one cannot complain,” she answers with a smile.

Juggling her business in LA with her film career, which is only her hobby, Kimi wants to make a short film or documentary some day.

Anil Kapoor’s next women-centric film may star daughter Sonam

Screen sense: Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor
Screen sense: Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor

After Aisha, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor is all set to produce another women-centric film which might feature daughter Sonam Kapoor. “Again I am making another women-centric film and very soon you will hear about it. Rhea is working and developing the script,” Kapoor said in an interview.

Asked if Sonam would be part of it, Kapoor says, “It depends upon Rhea as she is very particular about casting. If she feels Sonam is the right choice, then she would be there.” “Women-centric films need to be made in Bollywood. I myself made a woman centric film like Aisha and I am very happy and proud of that. I have worked in quite a few women oriented films. I have been very proud and honoured. I think we leading men must support and encourage women oriented films,” he said.

“I see that leading men are not very happy being part of women oriented films. And the best films made in our country including Mother India was a female centric film, and even till today the film is remembered,” he said.

The 52-year-old actor along with his younger daughter Rhea had produced Aisha (2010) based on the 1815 British novel Emma. The film starring Sonam and Abhay Deol in lead roles had, however, not fared well at the box office.

The actor who attended the event based on the concept of time-distance-speed, suggested that women must go for regular check-ups to prevent cancer.

Lavasa Women’s Drive this year is aimed at spreading awareness about cervical cancer.

“When a girl or woman crosses the age of 20, they should undergo constant check-ups. If cancer is detected early, it can be eradicated and this is the kind of awareness we all need to spread. This would stop and control cancer”, he said.

“I feel a lot of women in the interior parts of this country need to be educated and made aware about cancer than women living in metro cities. It is in the interiors and small towns where things are completely different and I feel we are lagging behind there,” he added. — PTI

Meltdown at 40

Keanu Reeves Keanu Reeves has revealed that he suffered a ‘meltdown’ when he turned 40 but he has now come to terms with getting older. The 47-year-old actor found it difficult to adjust when he reached the milestone age and admitted he is embarrassed by how he reacted at the time.

“I had the classic 40 meltdown, I did. It’s embarrassing. But then I recovered. To me, it was like a second adolescence. Hormonally, my body was changing, my mind was changing, and so my relationship to myself and the world around me came to this assault of finiteness,” he said. The Speed star also found it difficult to come to terms with leaving his youth behind.

“It was also the end of the projection of my younger self. I came to the place where I thought, ‘I don’t know where I am anymore but where have I come from and what am I doing?’” he said. — ANI

Full of beans
Paramvir Baidwan of MTV Roadies fame ventures into hospitality business

Road to fame: Akshita Agnihotri and Paramvir Baidwan
Road to fame: Akshita Agnihotri and Paramvir Baidwan

Not everyone has to undergo the grind to get that one big break. Luck works at times. For Paramvir Baidwan, it sure has. First MTV Roadies happened and then a cameo in No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ). It has been a smooth sail so far.

“I didn’t have to struggle much or go thorough auditions to bag the role in NOKJ. I casually took the auditions and got finalised after the first round.” He played a negative character in the film.

While all his co-actors had some years of experience in theatre, he was a fresher. “I had only faced the camera during Roadies, which required no acting.” Not having any professional training in acting didn’t discourage him. He managed pretty well and got recognition for his talent. “As a result, I also landed up with a role in another film by Raj Kumar Gupta.” He has now shifted gears and has now opened a café, Brick Road Café in Mohali, which he says will soon become a favourite with people in the city who love to dine out. European cuisine will be available at the café. “We have fast food international chains in the city but when it comes to cafes and lounges, there is hardly any choice for people of Mohali. As a result, they go to Chandigarh. The idea is to pull people who love European cuisine to the satellite city.”

Coming back to his acting career, he will be seen in a few Punjabi flicks and even videos. “In such intense competition, it’s better to have a fall-back option. My café will give me with the option.

King-size career

How international were the fashion weeks recently held at Jaipur and Hyderabad is debatable but for Kingfisher Calender finalist, Akshita Agnihotri the experience of walking the ramp with Zeenat Aman was simply great. Back from the recently concluded Jaipur International Fashion Week, she talks about her experiences of sharing space with leading models and celebrities of the glamour world.

“Even if the fashion week can’t be compared with the likes of Wills Lifestyle Indian Fashion Week and Lakme Fashion Week, but it gave me a lot of exposure. I now know how the fashion industry works.”

And adhering to the natural progression of switching from modelling to acting, she will soon be seen in a Bengali flick. Punjabi cinema, for a change isn’t the obvious choice for her. “Bengali cinema is any day bigger than Punjabi cinema. So, if I am getting a better launch pad, why not avail it.” She cites the examples of Vidya Balan, who began with Bengali cinema and is now doing exceedingly well in Bollywood.

“Even mainstream actors like Aishwarya Rai and Dia Mirza have acted in Bengali films. But that doesn’t mean I am averse to act in Punjabi films. What matters, is the role and the film,” she says.

Par Excellence
PUTTING–DRILLS
Jesse Grewal

A few building blocks for good putting are aim and position of the putter face at impact, path of the putter, on centre contact and the perfect speed. Here are a few drills which could help you improve your putting stroke in some of these areas.

For Aim and Path: Take two knitting needles and tie a string approximately 10 feet long between them. Stick one of the needles behind the hole, corresponding to the line of the putt (picture 1). Stick the other needle down the line of the putt so that the string is firmly stretched. The string will be suspended approximately 6 inches above the ground. When viewed from the top this would give you line from the ball to your aim point. Now, place the ball directly under the string with enough room for your backswing. When you place your putter the string will give you an aim line and all you have to do is either place your putter face right angle to the string or set the aim line on your putter head along the string (picture 3). While making the putting stroke make sure that you do not hit the string. If the path of your backswing is outwards then you will hit the string. This outward backswing with an inwards follow through path leads to ‘pulled’ putts. If the backswing is too inwards the follow through would be outwards and would hit the string. If your putter face is not square at impact you will not be able to get the ball to start down your target line. Some professionals draw a line with a marker pen on the green so that they can practice this way.

For Path and On-centre contact: Place two tee’s either side of your putter head. The tees should be about half inch away from the edge of your putter head (picture 2). Place the ball in the centre. If you hit either of the tees, the ball will not be stroked from the centre of your putter. If you hit the outer tee you could be too close to the ball at address or have an in to out path. If you hit the inner tee you could be too far or have an out to in path. Off centre contact also leads to ‘pushed’ and ‘pulled’ putts. If the ball hits the heel of the putter the ball will go left for a right handed player. This could be confusing as an in to out path should ‘push’ the ball but a heel contact will actually make it ‘pull’ or go left. In case of the opposite an out to in path should make the ball go left but toe contact will make it actually go right. Practice to get a repeatable on-centre contact.

UNITED COLOURS OF HOLI!
Bollywood celebrities share their plans for Holi this year and how they normally celebrate the festival of colours…
Vrindavan calling

Amrita Rao: Holi is one of my favourite festivals. But I am feeling bad this year since I’m shooting in Delhi this year and won’t get to celebrate with family and friends. But work comes first. Nonetheless, I hope to go to Vrindavan as it’s nearby. Vrindavan is famous for its Holi celebrations and it has been my dream to celebrate there.

Friends’ day out

Kainaz Motivala: Every year, we have a huge party at one of my college friends’ place. We have a DJ and rain-dance, and it’s a lot of fun! But this year, she’s abroad so no party. I have got no plans for now. But definitely will do something. I use environment friendly colours and would request everyone to use them as well.

On the sets

Divya Dutta: I normally go to Shabana Azmi’s place for Holi with friends. But this year I’m shooting in Delhi.  I’ve been celebrating Holi since childhood. It’s a fun festival. Once after Holi, the next day, all the colours refused to go. It was funny. This year I’m going to celebrate on the sets. So lots of fun, masti and colours!

No scene

Tanushree Dutta: I celebrate Holi indoors by watching TV with my family as I am allergic to colours. I even avoid attending parties because people still put colours.

Annual affair

Javed Akhtar: Every year, we host a holi bash. This year too, Shabana and I are having one. It’s an annual ritual for us. I’ve got really fond memories of the festival. I look forward to the festival and catching up with my friends.

Sallu’s wisdom

Age wise: Salman Khan He has kept the cash registers ringing at the box office by delivering superhit films like Wanted, Dabangg and Bodyguard year-after-year. But superstar Salman Khan feels that the more you grow older the more you need to work harder.

“There is this amazing thing in the film industry when you are younger, or in your teens...people tend to forgive all your things saying you are young. Now in this film industry the more you grow older you need to work that much harder. It is strange,” Salman told reporters, at an event where he had come to cheer physically challenged and orphaned children.

The 46-year-old actor, who is a fitness freak, says, he has to work out three times more, to match up to Gen Next. “When you are younger you are fitter…you run faster and kick faster and these things then create trouble later. Like for the younger generation of this film industry I had set a trend...but now I would suggest them to eat properly and have fun,” Salman said. “I have worked hard to make this kind of body. I feel whatever hard work I had put up that time, today these new kids are doing the same and hence I feel I need to work two-three times more,” he said. Salman had undergone a nerve surgery in the US last August. And reportedly, the pain has developed again. — PTI

Autumn in New York

Former Friends star Jennifer Aniston, who recently shifted to LA with boyfriend Justin Theroux, says she is happy to have left New York as it didn’t feel like home anymore.

The 43-year-old, who has been living in the Big Apple for years, said the paparazzi was making it difficult for the couple to stay there, reported a magazine. “We tried New York but it felt like I was living in a fishbowl. Justin still has an apartment there... It was a little rough with the paparazzi. It didn’t feel like the New York I grew up in and knew,” Aniston said.

The actress also said her current happiness level is at “10-plus” and her zen approach to life is also a contributing factor. “You have a more relaxed sense of the world and life and you realise there’s nothing to be taken too seriously besides doing your work and being a really good person,” she added. — PTI

Optimism helped my career: Julia Roberts

Positive vibes: Julia Roberts Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts says she has had a successful career because she has always remained optimistic. The 44-year-old Academy Award winning actress has three children with husband Danny Moder and although she feels incredibly blessed with her personal and professional good fortune, she doesn’t credit it all to simple luck, reported a website.

“I think I’m more in control of my life, my confidence and drive to do the work that I love and to believe that I can do it. I don’t think it’s magic dust that made Danny appear or director Mike Nichols. I think that I’m a deeply optimistic person. I’m a hopeful person. I mean that’s sort of the cornerstone of fairytales,” she said.

Roberts also credits Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall and The Pelican Brief filmmaker Alan Pakula with steering her career. “In essence I owe my career to Garry Marshall. There was no known reason for him to hire me for Pretty Woman. And even he was puzzled by his decision. “But I owe the forward motion of my career to Alan Pakula. It wasn’t until I met him and he had written the screenplay for Pelican Brief. We had a really interesting conversation about it and it re-ignited my enthusiasm for acting,” she added. — PTI

Ten years later…
Justin, who turned 18 on March 1, said he wants to build his own family at the age of 28

The singer, who turned 18 on March 1, said he wants to build his own family at the age of 28, reported a channel online. “I see myself in 10 years having a family. Twenty- eight, that’s a good time to really have a family ‘cause I want to be a young dad. Maybe, it is a long time away though. Don’t get any ideas, people. It’s not happening anytime soon,” he said.

But family is not the only thing he sees in the future. “I see myself acting. I have some ideas right now I’m working on,” he said. The boyfriend of singer-actress Selena Gomez recently made a cameo in an Oscars sketch with host Billy Crystal.

However, Bieber is taking one year at a time. “Eighteen’s going to be fun. I look forward to a lot of touring and a lot of spending time with my fans, so 18 is going to be a great year,” he said. — PTI

Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow to take yoga break
...and the destination is Tuscany, Italy

Healthy way: Gwyneth Paltrow Pop diva Beyonce and actress Gwyneth Paltrow are reportedly planning to take a yoga-based break with their kids in Tuscany, Italy. The two friends, who met through their respective husbands Jay-Z and Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, are believed to have hired a villa in Italy for a luxurious break, reported a website.

Beyonce is expected to take eight-week-old daughter Blue Ivy, while 39-year-old Gwyneth will take along daughter Apple, seven, and son Moses, five, for the trip. “They’re planning daily yoga sessions at the private five-star villa, which has its own pool. Beyonce has also been taking her daughter Blue Ivy to baby yoga classes after Gwyneth recommended it, so they will spend some of the holiday doing that,” a source said. — PTI

Comeback times

Troubled star Lindsay Lohan is reportedly starring in a sexual thriller which comes from the producer of Madonna’s W.E, Kris Thykier. The 25-year-old actress, who is in the middle of a career comeback after a couple of tumultuous years and failed movies, has already been signed to play Elizabeth Taylor in an upcoming film.

Her current campaign for a career comeback also includes Saturday Night Life hosting gig. Johan Renck whose credits on television include Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead will direct the movie, reported a website. Renck is also known as music video director for Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Chris Cornell among others as well as commercials for such products as Agent Provocateur and Levi’s. — PTI

It’s fun to change looks: Kylie Minogue

Singer Kylie Minogue says she loves to change her hair colour. The 43-year-old recently dyed her hair darker for a movie role, and although she enjoyed having brown tresses, she is in the process of going back to blonde because she struggles to do her make-up well, reported a website.

“I think most people think of me as a blonde but I recently had a role in a French film and the director wanted to make my hair darker,” Minogue said. “It’s quite fun to change your look for something like that I will gradually go back to a sun-kissed blonde. I’ve found it really difficult to do my make-up with darker hair. I seem to look better with nothing,” she added. — PTI

Reality check

As real as it gets: Sudha Chandran Sudha Chandran who became a household name overnight with her character Ramola Sikand is considered to be one of the flamboyant actors on small screen. She is known for her sarees, chunky jewellery and designer bindis. Sudha is often cited as a symbol of will power, she was last seen in Mata Ki Chowki.

She is back to small screen with Rajshri Productions Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga, a new love story produced by Kavita Barjatya and penned by Sooraj Barjatya. Sudha Chandra has accepted a powerful role of a stern and autocratic mother Kalyani Devi.

What excited you about the role?

I have played different roles in the past, this by far is the most challenging one. I am playing Kalyani Devi, a mother of three daughters who she does not want to let go. She wants to bring ghar jamai for them.

What is the background of this show?

The show is based in Indore, where the tradition of ghar jamai has been running strong through generations. The show required a few locations which could give relevance to the story. As far as work is concerned we haves already shot enough episodes

Do you agree with the concept of Ghar-Jamai?

In our country damaads are given so much importance. So, when two people agree to come together for the family’s sake, the decision is right. If the girl and the boy think that their life would be alright after marriage they should opt for it.

What is the USP of the show?

It is a feel good drama. The love story with ghar jamai angle makes it a fresher family subject, which will give out a social message in an entertaining manner.

Do you relate to the character of Kalyani Devi?

You have to give a part of yours to every character you play. Kalyani Devi is as real as it could be.

THE YEAR AHEAD

If your birthday is March 6...

It is not an easy moment and even if you feel to be in the darkness, light is there, albeit hidden. For now, you are not advised to confide all your thoughts in those around you. Keep your integrity. Ruled by number 6 and the planet Venus you are lord of a pleasant personality, sharp memory and you are very fond of worldly pleasures.

Businessmen and professionals will have a comfortable year. Those in service will find April moving smoothly. Politicians will muster courage to brave the odds in the second half of March. 2012 will be generally good for the artists except for a few negligible hiccups. September  is good for starting new ventures. Projects that have been slow till now will gain momentum. Disputes if any will get sorted out and bring a sense of relief to your mind. Expect a brilliant June with fantastic rewards. Look for favourable opportunities for important purchases. If you work in a team with others, try to listen to your co-workers opinions. A more conciliating attitude will improve work relations. You may express unhappiness with the behaviour of your spouse. You may be provoked and get into arguments at home and workplace as well. Personal property transactions can be dealt with utmost caution. Romantic encounters with colleagues might develop, though it will be very short lived. Your competitive nature will make you stay ahead of others and also be popular among your peers.

Your  income will balance expenditure. You may have to incur expenditure for children and for entertainment purposes. You may be asked to provide an explanation in matters relating to your tax payments. Unexpected loans may come to your rescue. Friends will be helpful but demanding. You stay ahead of others because of your interest in new things and new technology, but you need to control your tendency to be moody, timid and spendthrift at times. Keep a watch on your health. Minor health troubles may worry you throughout July. Recurring mental tensions may spoil your health otherwise. Mood: Confused, possibly by too much ‘idealistic thinking.’
