People protest against pollution-spreading chemical factory
Dera Bassi, March 5 People raised slogans against the company management and demanded the action for stopping the spreading pollution in the near by choe. Meanwhile, the SDO Pollution Control Board, Gursarn Garg, had also visited the company premises to check the pollution control norms being adopted to control the pollution. He informed that the company was already warned and given time to upgrade its treatment plant till April. He had asked the protesting people to inform, immediately, if they found any violation of the pollution control norms so that an action could be taken. Notably, people of the nearby villages were protesting against the pollution of the Indo-Swift company for past few days. They alleged that the chemical company was discharging its wastage in the nearby choe and some animals, who had consumed contaminated water of the choe, were affected. Meanwhile, the company management had denied the charges of spreading pollution and said that all the pollution control norms were being adopted by the company. The SDM, Rajesh Tripathi, said that after receiving the complaint from the affected people, an appropriate action would be taken, to control the pollution in the choe and drains. |

HC: Impart vocational training to inmates
Chandigarh, March 5 The Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover asserted: "Courses such as bee-keeping, mushroom cultivation, horticulture, floriculture, and other agricultural operations, ensuring proficiency in raising cash crops should be encouraged". The Bench also directed that "every jail in the states of Punjab, Haryana and UT shall endeavour to take three-tier based approach to provide educational facilities and opportunities to the inmates". The directions came after the High Court took suo motu cognisance of the educational and other facilities being provided to the inmates. Elaborating, the Bench asserted that a separate room should be set up to provide primary education to illiterate men and women inmates. "Where there are female inmates lodged in the jails, along with their children, such schools shall also address the need of primary education for such children," the Bench added. In its detailed order, the Bench further added: "There would be a primary level teacher available to impart education to such inmates". The Bench also ruled that it was in favour of providing higher education Class X onwards in general streams and disciplines such as English, history and political science. Free books and stationary too would be provided "to those desirous of pursuing such available courses". Before parting with the orders, the Bench asserted: "It shall be obligatory upon all the jails to ensure that such facilities for meeting the object are available and adequately notified to the inmates". |

Car dealer told to rectify fault or pay Rs 1 lakh
Chandigarh, March 5 The complainant in this case was a Professor of Panjab University. In the order, president of the forum PD Goel has stated EM PEE Motors is directed to permanently rectify/fix the noise in the car, to the full satisfaction of the complainant as well as bring it to the permissible limit as notified by the government totally free of cost, within a period of 30 days, from the date of receipt of the vehicle in workshop, failing which they shall be liable to pay Rs 1-lakh as compensation for harassment and inconvenience caused to the complainant, due to the deficient act and conduct. In its complaint moved through the Registrar of Panjab University, Amarinder Pal Singh, M.Tech, Assistant Professor, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, has said a Toyota Corolla Altis car was purchased by him on September 25, 2009, for Rs 11,24,798 from EMPEE Motors in Industrial Area, Phase 1. The car started producing a noise at the rear side near window panes. He repeatedly made rounds of the car dealers but the fault was never rectified. It was alleged that in order to hide their deficiency, the car dealers stated that the fitment of non-genuine window curtains on the rear doors was the reason for the noise defect, whereas the noise problem started almost on the In their reply to the forum, EMPEE Motors clarified that the car was received on December 17, 2009, for rear-side noise check and the same was properly attended to the complainant’s entire satisfaction and thereafter the car had met with an accident on March, 2010, which, too, was properly attended to by taking an insurance claim from ICICI Lombard Insurance Company. Local commissioner appointed
Chandigarh, March 5 The directions came on a petition filed in public interest by one Jaswant Singh of Baltana. He was seeking directions to the State of Punjab and other respondents to initiate immediate steps to stop unauthorised or illegal constructions and narrowing down of Sukhna Choe in Baltana village. As the petition came up for resumed hearing before the Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Mahesh Grover, the petitioner stated that the Sukhna choe was a natural system of drainage of rainwater running since time immemorial. Seeking its protection from encroachments, the petitioner alleged the State of Punjab failed to discharge its statutory duty for preventing the occurrence of floods due to illegal constructions in the area of the Sukhna choe. On the other hand, the State of Punjab, in a short written statement had, contended that the process to notify Sukhna Choe under Section 55 of the Canal and Drainage Act, 1873, had been initiated. After the notification under Section 55, the authorities concerned will be authorised to stop the obstruction of free flow of water. Thereafter, necessary action to stop encroachment by land developers and property dealers will be taken as per the law. Taking up the matter, the Division Bench appointed advocate HC Arora, as local commissioner for submitting a factual report on the existence and extent of area covered under the Sukhna choe. The local commissioner has been empowered to interact with the revenue officers concerned for submitting his report on the basis of the revenue records. The revenue department officers have also been directed to extend cooperation and assistance to the local commissioner. He has been directed to submit his report to the High Court within six weeks. The case will now be listed for further hearing on May 4. |

Man arrested for rape
Chandigarh, March 5 The victim lodged a complaint with the Sector 34 police station and alleged that Dharminder allegedly raped her after inviting her for the tea in the hotel. He was arrested under Section 376 of the IPC. According to the station house officer of the Sector 34 police station, Kirpal Singh, the victim has alleged that the accused has been known to her for the past five years. “On her complaint, the accused was arrested and the further investigation is under way. In her complaint, the victim has disclosed that she had been in touch with the accused for the past four or five years. Explaining the incident, she told the police that Dharminder called her for the tea at a Sector 32-based hotel and later allegedly raped her,” said Kirpal Singh. |

2 commit suicide
Zirakpur, March 5 In first incident, the police said that Shakuntla, a 30-year-old woman, hailing from Banaras, was living at rented accommodation at Hem Vihar, Baltana, along with her two minor daughters. The police added that they received information about the suicide from her landlord who found Shakuntla hanging with dupatta from a cupboard. He tried to contact her husband, Sanju Bhardwaj, immediately, whose mobile phone was switched off. Later, he informed the police about the incident. The SHO, Zirakpur, Yogi Raj, stated that the body of Shankuntla has been sent for postmortem examination at Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. Later in the evening, Dalip along with the factory workers where she was working reached the Baltana chowki and demanded action against Sanju Bhardwaj. “The police has booked Sanju Bhardwaj on a charge of abetment to suicide on the complaint of Dalip, brother of the deceased,” the SHO Zirakpur added. In another incident, Mahinder Singh (28), a resident of Saini Vihar, Phase IV, was allegedly found hanging under mysterious circumstances, here today. The police said that his body was found hanging with a ‘duppata’ with hook of a ceiling fan. The police said during the investigation, it was found that Mahinder was addicted to drugs. |

Two die in road accident
Panchkula, March 5 The deceased have been identified as Pradeep (19) and Vijay (20), of Mauli village and Kurukshetra, respectively. According to information, both the victims were on a motorcycle towards Kurukhsetra. When they reached near Shahzadpur, an unknown vehicle hit their motorcycle, resulted in their death. After conducting the postmortem examination, the police has handed over their bodies to their relatives. A Panchkula police officer said that such incidents happen due to presence of several blind turns on this road. ''Drivers often lose control of the vehicles. Many colonies also exist on the sides of the highway which hinder the flow of traffic,'' said the officer. Ban by district administration on the movement of overloaded vehicles on the highway had no effect. |

60-yr-old crushed to death by bus
Chandigarh, March
5 The accident took place around 8 am when Dharam Pal was returning home on his non-gear scooter after dropping his grandson at his school. According to eyewitnesses, Garg was hit by the bus of Oriental Group of Colleges which jumped the red light. The driver fled from the scene immediately after the mishap.
Garg, who owns a garment shop in Sector 41 here, is survived by his wife, three married daughters, sons and grandsons. |

Chandigarh, March 5 Winning the toss, Maharashtra chose to bat and soon faced a setback when their opener CJ Khurana was castled by Amitoze Singh for 1, and medium pacer MS Gony clean bowled RH Motwani before the batsman could open his account. The innings were then steadied by HH Khadiwale (36) and AR Bawne (23) before Ravi Inder Singh and Chandan Madan effected the dismissal of AR Wawne through a run out. Right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma, recently back from the Australian tour, castled HH Khadiwale for 36 off 70 balls. He struck again when he got NS Paradkar stumped by wicket keeper Chandan Madan for 41 off 49 balls. At this stage, skipper Harbhajan Singh wove a web around the batsmen and scalped three victims. He drew NS Paradkar out of his crease to be stumped by wicket keeper Chandan Mandan for 42 off 47 balls and then clean bowled AA Darekar and MM Sayed. SH Yadav remained unbeaten on 22 off 22 deliveries with three boundaries. Veteran athletes do Mohali proud
Chandigarh, March 5 Over 3000 players from 24 states participated in the championship with nearly 60 players from Punjab. The two brothers were the only winners from the Mohli district. The duo had won six medals in the recently held 32nd Punjab Masters Athletics Championship at Banga in December. Before this, the senior Sidhu won a gold medal in shot put during the Asian Championships held in 2006 and 2008. His sibling clinched a gold medal in hammer throw during the 31st National Masters Athletics Championship held in Chennai in 2010. Further, he won a bronze medal in the World Games held in Sydney, Australia. |
Book on Indian hockey legends released
Chandigarh, March 5 Iqbal Singh Saroya, who retired after serving at different posts in Punjab government in 2001, developed interest in the game during his college days when India won the Asian Championship for the first time in 1966. The book, scripted in Gurmukhi, is titled “Hockey the Sultan”. It elaborates upon the careers of twenty players, including Jaipal Singh, the captain of Indian hockey team in Olympics of 1928 held at Amsterdam in Holland. Others players covered in the book include Firoz Khan, Lal Shah Bukhari, Gurmit Singh Kular, Dhyan Chand, Captain Roop Singh, and K D Singh Babu. The introduction of all the players had been expressed in poetic style. |
Over 130 enthusiasts to take part in SJOBA rally
Chandigarh, March 5 Apart from the ‘Challenge Rally’, SJOBA is also organising ‘Endurance Trial’ which will be based on the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format. The rally carries a total prize money of about Rs 2,00,000 and is open to jeeps, gypsys, cars and bikes. While 100 contestants have already been contacted for participation in the extreme category, others have shown interest in joining the TSD category, said the president. Giving details Shivneet said, “The Super Special Stage would be held on March 23 at the Sector 34 ground. Here the general public would get to see and experience the breathtaking driving skills of the country’s top rally drivers as their vehicles scream over a closed circuit race. On March 24, the contestants would be flagged off from St John’s School and they would pass through six competitive stages on their way to Shimla, the overnight halt. On March 25, they would return to Chandigarh passing through an entirely new route.” The participants will go through Trilokpur, Morni, Badisher, Thapli, Mallah, Bhojnagar, Ashinikhad, Jhaja, Chail, Chhalanda, Tehra, Koti, Gumma, Baldeyan, Theog, Tiyali, Kelti, Kamayana, Kiarighat, Kandaghat, Barog, Bhojnagar and Chakki Ka Mor before returning to Chandigarh. The rally has become a nursery for motor sports in North India and many rally-enthusiasts from this region, including Hari Singh, Bitto Mann, Manik Rekhy, Karan Jung and Sunny Sidhu, have honed their skills and proved their mettle in the SJOBA rally, he added. |
DAV Club outplay Coaching Centre-17
Chandigarh, March 5 Both the teams were balanced and played a coordinated game. DAV Club earned a direct kick in the second minute when defender Sandeep of Coaching Centre pulled back Munish Mundri of DAV Club. However, the kick was well-collected by the Coaching Centre goalkeeper. Coaching Centre’s citadel was breached in the third minute when as the DAV Club scored their first in goal. The scorer was right winger Dhruv who converted a pass given by right half Ajay Kumar. The DAV boys kept up the pressure but, as the game progressed, were challenged their rivals. However, their efforts were mostly thwarted by DAV’s young defenders. Meanwhile, DAV left striker Ajay hoodwinked two defenders and passed the ball to left striker Meinam Roko, who scored the second goal in 36 th minute with a powerful shot. After the break, the Coaching Centre boys tried hard their level to reduce the margin but failed. The DAV boys won the match by 2-0 and earned three valuable points. In second super league match Pr AG (Audit) Punjab beat Blue Star Club by 5-1. The experienced AG players were a transformed lot. They showed better coordination and team performance. They started putting pressure on their rivals right from the kick off and their efforts bore fruit when right half Sanjay gave a beautiful pass to his right striker Sehaj Pal. Though he missed the pass, right winger Rajeev Rattan collected it and took a powerful shot to open the account for his team in the 10th minute. In the counter attack, Blue Star forward Philip Sharma collected a stray ball and ran towards opponent’s goal. His first shot hit the goal post and went out. On the other hand, right striker Sehaj Pal of Audit Punjab scored the second goal in 35th minute. The score at half time was 2-0 in favour of AG Punjab. After interval, Philip Sharma of Blue Star missed a golden chance when his shot went over the goal post in spite of goal keeper not being at his position. AG Punjab team added more goals in 54th , 60th and 65th minutes. The scorer were Rajeev Rattan (2), and Sehaj Pal (1).
