Stars putt it right
On a Sunday afternoon, the stars shine down at the IGP Golf Tournament in Chandigarh, mingling and posing for fans
Jasmine Singh

Each one of us has a way to spend or kill a holiday, however you want to take it. If sleeping throughout the day is on the charts of some, others don’t mind eating or shopping out, both is draining on money of course. Then there are some, who slip into an easy, comfortable and stylish clothing and head to the IGP Golf Tournament at Golf Club in Chandigarh on Sunday. Golf, golfers from the region, friends, and a topping of hot list celebrities, the first of its kind IGP Golf Tournament sure saw the best use of Sunday! A host of stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Abhay Deol, Kirron Kher, Sikander Kher, Harbhajan Mann, Neeru Bajwa, Lakhwinder Wadali, and crew of Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, Colin Wilson (executive producer), Mark Bole (producer) stood together on stage to mesmerise the crowd (who reacted pretty decently to their presence), and talk about the endeavour by the Chandigarh police, golf, and small things here and there.

The Deol Pact

It is a delight to see Sunny Deol in a turban, as he greets and posses with his fans. Not before on popular request, he says his famous dialogue, “Yeh dhai kilo ka haath.” Everyone claps, he blushes and we quickly pass him the compliment, “You look great in turban,” to which he coyly repilies, “Yes, I don’t tie it myself. Someone helps me with it, but I will learn it.” With Mohalla Assi ready for release, Sunny is hoping it hits the screen soon. As for the debonair Abhay Deol, “I am glad I was invited to the event. It is nice being here,” he shares.

Yess Boss

The Hollywood crew is intrigued by the actor who carries so many tattoos on his body. They catch him right here, Sanjay Dutt, the deadly actor is a sure shot crowd puller. It is big, firm no when it comes to a formal interview, but you can always know him more as a fan. How are the kids doing? “Great, ,” he replies. We see him warm up. Working with Bigg Boss 5? “It was great; I wasn’t an actor on the show. It was like a family to me where I would share with the contestants whatever I had to. I would be a part of it again, if they want me to,” he says sounding interested. Sanjay Dutt has been shooting for Son Of Sardar in Patiala for a long time. “The people of Punjab are very warm and encouraging. We have enjoyed working here,” he adds. Sanjay Dutt will start shooting for Munna Bhai soon. There is something more exciting he is doing. “I am playing a real life character, Sharman Munjha from Porbander. This is something to watch out for.”

Play it right

Sikander Kher is all for sports, and Golf is something he took up three and a half years back. Other than that he loves to act, not to miss he is a rebel too. ‘My mother has been after me to cut my hair, but as you see I don’t even comb or shampoo them,” he shares. Sikander will take up an acting project soon. “I know I have to struggle but with positive attitude things can be possible,” shares the actor.

Shooting in the dark

Now, this one gets a bit tricky. Getting to break the ice with the crew of Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty can be a real challenge. However, executive producer Colin Wilson, who also produced Avatar is fun to talk to. “I am liking every bit in Chandigarh,” he shares. Colin talks about visiting Golden Temple. “I want to go there once,” he smiles. With Mukesh Ambani investing money in Hollywood movies, does the producer see India as a good investment market? “Definitely, India is growing as a market for Hollywood investment,” he adds.

Hair extensions are the easiest way to increase the length of your hair
Sabia Talwar

Hair colouring, streaking, straightening and now the most recent hair extensions is catching up as a hair fashion and style statement. The trend of having long hair is back, so hair extensions are the easiest way to have your hair length increased. These extensions are as natural as your normal hair and can be well matched with the texture and colour of your hair. For that matter, some extensions can be used as random hair streaks with bright colours, studs and feathered accessories.

A healthy hair growth is every woman’s dream but nowadays it is impossible in which case, hair extensions work the best for a changed look.

Says Richa Agarwal, managing director, Cleopatra, Sector-8, Chandigarh, “Hair extensions are definitely ruling as one of the hair makeover tricks. One should keep in mind the quality of hair extensions and the place from where you are getting it done. It all depends on the length, colour and the texture of one’s hair.” No doubt it is an exhaustive procedure of getting the extensions glued in with your natural hair but it works wonders for women who wish to have long hair.

“The stylist should know the right gaps to be left and merging the artificial hair with the natural ones. The two kinds of extensions are human hair and synthetic hair,” adds Richa.

On one hand, if permanent hair extensions are expensive, there are temporary hair clip ons available, which can be used as coloured streaks and are reasonable as well.

Says Priyanka Kapila, an MBA student from Chandigarh, “I have never got any chemical applications on my hair, so for parties, I do opt for temporary clip on extensions which look so chic. It gives me a different look.”

Permanent hair extensions, which can easily be maintained for one year are a solution to many hair problems. Says Rachit Malhotra, creative director, Femina Plus beauty salon, Sector-44, Chandigarh, “Earlier clients used to refrain from extensions because they gave an artificial look but nowadays human hair are available. Women who have poor hair growth or probably want to increase their length at one go rather than waiting for years can go in for these.”

Hair care is essential after getting extensions. “The price depends on the number of strands one goes for and it starts from Rs 2,000 per strand,” adds Rachit. So, if you want long hair, you know what you can do to get them.

Permanent extensions start from Rs 15,000 and go up to Rs 80,000

The smarter way is to go for temporary hair clip ons, which are available at a reasonable price starting from `100 and can be used while one is attending parties.

The permanent extensions as well as temporary clip ons are available in different shades and also in curls as well as straight strands.

Vidya has arrived

She was once targeted for her style, dancing skills and fuller figure, but Vidya Balan, who will be seen in her first item number soon, is now unapologetic about herself and happy to see just how far she has come. The 34-year-old actress, who made a sensational debut with Parineeta in 2005, faced a tough two-year period from 2007-2008 as her films bombed at the box office, which was accompanied by a lot of personal criticism.

"I am unapologetic about who I am. Now, I am really happy about myself, the kind of work I am doing. I am happy to have recleemed myself after facing severe criticisms for a period of almost two years. I am not bitter about it but I will admit that it affected me a lot," Vidya said in an interview. "I believe that it happened for a larger reason, for my good. I have accepted the way I am. I no longer want to be what I am not and people have appreciated that. I have realised that the easiest thing is to try and be yourself," she said. Vidya is all set to do a 'Lavani' item song for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's forthcoming film Ferrari Ki Sawaari.

"It is a great song. It is strange that I was once criticised for my lack of dancing skills but now have been asked to do an item number. I don't feel vindicated but I am happy to see just how far I have come," she said. "I am not a dancer. I struggled while dancing in Kismat Konnection. I was almost dying before every shot and on top of that I was asked to dance opposite Shahid Kapoor, who is one of the best dancers in Bollywood. But now I have started enjoying dancing. It all started with The Dirty Picture." The actress, who surprised everyone by portraying the role of southern sex siren Silk Smitha to the perfection, has taken up another challenging role. She will be playing a pregnant NRI woman in search of her husband in Kolkata in Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani. — PTI

Julia’s return on stage
Theatre thrills: Julia Roberts
Theatre thrills: Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts has said that acting on stage is like childbirth because it is easy to forget the bad parts of the experience. The Mirror Mirror star, who made her Broadway debut in 2006 with Three Days of Rain, plans to return to theatre.

“It’s like childbirth, you don’t know until you’ve done it but you get a little bit away from it and you go, ‘Of course I want to do that again’. You get sucked back into doing theatre because it’s really thrilling and does challenge you as an actor in really unique ways,” she said.

“You know, I love the medium of film, I love that environment but it’s just different.

“I really enjoyed doing Three Days of Rain but I could definitely find ways to have more fun because now I have a much better sense of what I’m getting into.

“I mean when we did Three Days of Rain, I had two little children and was doing eight shows a week. There was relentlessness to it that you can’t understand if you haven’t been in that situation,” she added. — ANI

Kher’s tribute to the visually impaired

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who essays the role of a blind man in his upcoming Marathi film Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein, says the movie and his role is a tribute to the visually impaired people. The film, directed by Pramod Joshi, marks Kher's debut in Marathi cinema.

"When you play the role of a differently abled person then you discover how brilliantly they live their lives. This is a tribute to all the blind or visually impaired people...hope everyone would like it," Kher said in an interview.

It was Kher, who at the last minute suggested that his character in the film should be blind.

"Everything was difficult as I had not done preparation for the role which was decided at the last minute.

I did not want to do it in a clichéd manner; I wanted it to be realistic. We did not want to have a blind man with a stick; this man is full of life — happy and smiling," Kher said.

"In the film, I play the role of a person who talks about vision but is blind. I took this decision of playing blind character just minutes before I started shooting. We intend to spread the message that one should live life to the fullest," the award winning actor said.

The 56-year-old Bollywood veteran depended on his director for getting nuances of the Marathi language.

"I am doing Marathi film for the first time. I am not that good with the language but my director was a very good coach and he guided me well. I understand Marathi but I am not that good at speaking the language," Kher said.

Tara’s multi-tasking
On ramp: Tara Sharma
On ramp: Tara Sharma

Actress Tara Sharma, who walked the ramp for the first time at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week here, says the experience was more scary than doing films.

Tara ended the show in a gold metallic sheath for designer Pia Pauro at LFW.

"This is a debut for me in a way as I have never been a show stopper. This is for the first time I am walking the ramp I have never really been a ramp model at all so I was a bit nervous. I find doing films less scary...when you have to walk quietly its quite scary," she said.

"For me, Pia is a friend and the other connection is that we both are mothers and have two kids each. I feel women can multi-task. So you can be a mother...and be working, can be doing a show, walking the ramp," she felt.

The designer line was called Shamal, a north-westerly wind blowing over the Middle East deserts.

Divided into four parts, Pia stayed firm on the tribal concept, but separated the sections into bling, rocks, de Luxe and tunics.

The garments were in vibrant hues of indigo, orange, naturals, pink and electric blue. The fabrics matched the youthful tones as jerseys, chiffons, georgettes, cottons and silks were beautifully created into cool sundresses, comfy tunics, flowing kaftans, elegant saris and slinky evening wear. — PTI

Rihanna is Adele's fan

Singer Rihanna says she felt depressed after listening to Grammy winner Adele's 21, because she could personally identify with the heartbreaking lyrics of the album.

"I feel like everyone in the world identified with 21, to the point that I had to stop listening because it was depressing me so much. If you identify with it, sometimes you don't want to hear about it," said Rihanna.

However, the singer admits she is a big fan of Adele.

"I love her. I'm a big fan... Her album spoke to me so much," she said. — IANS

Chandni remake?
On screen pair: Tushar Kapoor and Kulraj Randhawa
On screen pair: Tushar Kapoor and Kulraj Randhawa

Tushar Kapoor and Kulraj Randhawa are apparently quite upbeat about their upcoming release Char Din ki Chandni. Both of them were recently spotted in Moradabad promoting their romantic-comedy flick.

Kapoor’s father Jeetendra was also present for the event. Randhawa, who gave the hit Yamla Pagla Deewana last year, is hopeful that her new film will make a mark too.

“We are very happy. You have given a very-very good response for my last film Yamla Pagla Deewana and I am expecting a bigger response in Char Din Ki Chandini, which is releasing on March 08,” Randhawa said. Meanwhile, Kapoor also expects the film to do good business, as it will be releasing on Holi.

“Public will ascertain the business of the film. For better business we are releasing the film on the occasion of Holi because more and more people go for a movie on holiday. And since it is a family cum comedy film then we would like the film to do more business,” Kapoor said. The film has been directed by Yamla Pagla Deewana fame Samir Karnik, and Kapoor will be playing the role of a sikh.

The film has reportedly already grabbed eyeballs with its remixed version of 1990’s chartbuster Chandni, which had Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor in the lead roles. — ANI

Raring to go
Hapreet Matharoo, the director of Jaan to Payarra, talks about his project and why he thinks the film will make a difference.
Vasudha Gupta

She is a civil engineer. She is into the agricultural industry and runs a clothing brand called Zunairah and now she is ready to test her acting skills on screen. Henna Singhal is a woman of many facets. Playing the female lead actor in Jaan to Pyarra, she speaks at length about her role in the film and where she aspires to see herself.

Dressed in a blue anarkali with a scarf wrapped around her neck, she along with the cast and crew of the film is excited about playing the only girl and has two guys running after her in the film. “That is why the film is titled Jaan To Payarra, as the female lead comes between the two male actors and is informed that if she is jaan, the friend is Jaan to Pyarra,” says Jatinder Singh Mejal Kalan, the writer of the film.

Hoping to make a film, which will be liked by the public, the writer is certain that the treatment given to the film will be very different. “We writers are painters who prepare the outline, the directors are the ones to add colour to the film,” he adds.

For the director, the theme of the film is the power. At 29 years of age, when boys are still uncertain about what they want in life, there is Harpreet Matharoo, who brings his rich direction experience here. His previous works include film like Lakh Pardesi, Sajna Ve Sajna and Kafila. “My first film as a director Rehmattan will release in the next two weeks,” he says.

Putting all his effort and labour in his next, Harpreet has his fingers crossed to be able to make a mark in the film. “The biggest problem the Punjabi film industry is facing budget constraints. A Bollywood film releases in over 30 countries and still sometimes, don’t cover the costs. Punjabi films release in only seven countries and have major problems in recovering the costs,” the young director shares with us.

The film goes on the floor in May and will also include a four day shoot in Bangkok. The movie also stars Harish Verma in lead role, Sippy Gill and Bhootu Shah. Amar Haldipur, Amrit Singh and Inder will make music for the film.

stress buster
Fun and festivities
Renee Singh

I feel that festivals are a sure delight! Although there are no major holidays devoted to stress relief specifically, I feel that getting into the festive spirit is a major de-stressor in our lives. Festivals always offer many stress relieving opportunities.

Any kind of joyful activity is a stress reliever and in a country like ours with varied colourful cultures there are so many festivals happening all the time that the spirit of happiness constantly lingers in the air. You just have to catch the vibrations. Here of course just as much as we revel in Dusshera and Diwali, Lohri and Holi, we also get into the Christmas spirit and the New Year’s joyousness.

What I love about the new era of global connectivity is that we have crossed cultural barriers and started enjoying major festivals of most cultures and have started creating a spirit of joy for ourselves all year round.

Make the most of a festival

One should forget about the differences in culture and religion and reach out for the fun of it, if we want to live in a stress free environment.

Learn to celebrate

Life is meant to be a constant celebration. It is only a question of changing our perception and fitting it to feel joyous.

Make the most of the sweets

All festivals are wonderful days meant to promote love and joy. Make the most of your love for sweets on this special day. Just feel guilt free for once when you are indulging your sweet tooth. You can even find sugar free sweets now to indulge yourself and make it a way of celebrating.

Revel in your bonds

Build the strength of your bonds and revel in your relationships. Even if you are single there are plenty of fun, relaxing ways to enjoy keep yourself stress free all year round.

Be optimistic

Research shows us that the benefits of optimism are huge to free us of any kind of stress condition. Optimists enjoy:

Better health

Stronger relationships
Are more productive
Experience less stress

Remain happy

Optimists tend to take more risks and blame external circumstances if they don’t succeed sometimes in their en devours, they always maintain the ‘’try again’’ attitude. They are less upset by setbacks than others and less likely to go into a high stress zone. Pessimists on the other hand tend to blame themselves and become reluctant in the ‘’try again’’ ways.

Once we understand the workings of our wayward minds we realise that positive self talk can affect our stress levels and so can positive activities. And it is because of the difference in behaviour in optimists versus pessimists, those who habitually practice positive thinking and positive activities tend to experience more success which in turn leads to a stress free life.

Do make a consistent positive effort to enjoy the festivities around you and with Holi beckoning you have another opportunity.

As festivals keep coming up all through the year just re-programme yourself and your way of thinking so that positive thinking and enjoying a festival just become a way of life with you!

Writer’s corner
Meet Our Writers brings together some esteblished and some new voices from Chandigarh for a sharing session

Another session of Meet Our Writers was organised by the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi this evening at the UT Guest House on Saturday. The writers included BD Kalia (Humdum), OP Sondhi, Bhupinder Brar, Harish Bhatia and Balpreet. Kalia and Sondhi are established writers who have earlier been felicitated by various literary bodies. Sondhi was recently awarded by the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi for his lifelong achievement in the field of literature.

“Painting is poetry in colours and poetry is painting in words,” says BD Kalia who began the proceedings. Kalia has a lot of poetry on his finger tips, could recite from memory and won over the listeners. He believes that the best poetry is spontaneous. He read some poems written at the Niagra Falls, on female foeticide, and other subjects. The tone ranged from the serious and nostalgic to the humorous and satirical.

OP Sondhi, who is a novelist, likes to absorb all that he sees all around him and puts it into his novels. His attempt is to get inside the characters he writes about, preferring the novel form rather than the short story because he feels he needs more words and more room to explore his characters and their lives. Bhupinder Brar read from his poems written in Hindi date back to the time when he was a student at JNU. He read Vaapsi, a very intense poem with strong evocative images of sickness, deprivation and loneliness. His images are vivid and strike a responsive chord in the listener.

Balpreet has been writing poetry lately although she has not published much. She read her poem What’s Cooking? Her subjects are woman-oriented, taken from the kitchen, blended with insight and the imagination.

Poetry “just happened” to Harish Bhatia, who has been a teacher and a theatre person. He is an avid “Facebooker Poet” whose poems have been greatly appreciated by his close online circle. The influence of theatre is strong in his poems, particularly that of Samuel Beckett and absurd drama. The evening was an enjoyable one with Madhav Kaushik, secretary of the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi, compeering the proceedings. His efforts, along with those of Manju Jaidka, chairperson, were greatly appreciated by all. Vivek Atray, himself a popular writer, was also in the gathering, as were other writers, literature enthusiasts and intellectuals of the city.

An announcement was also made of the recent formation of the Chandigarh Literary Society which would have its inaugural function on 14th March, holding a Face-to-Face with Anupam Kher who has recently brought out his book entitled The Best Thing About You is You.

Road Rage
Zooming in
Simranjeet Gill

For many it’s a dream come true while for others it’s the right to possess in their might. Superbikes are making a foray on Indian roads howsoever unsafe they might be under the present conditions. The human tendency to explore, the craving for more, shifting cultural values, more expandable income and upcoming infrastructure could be cited as some of the reasons for this untapped market.

Many a companies have made their products available which so far, for us Indians could only be seen in movie flicks. Companies as Suzuki, Kawasaki, Ducati, Triumph and Harley Davidson have opened their shop to lure the big CC lovers. While some have the buck, some stretch and some aspire to own them machines. For those who make it, and are riding superbikes for first time in their life – this is the article for you.

For the ones who have been riding already, there would be a paradigm shift in riding experience, for the newbie whose first bike is a super bike it would be a new experience guaranteed, but not as profound. However, rules of the game hold true for both the categories. The superbike gives you a lot of power between the legs, but not the brains to harness it; the control has to be with your mind than your hormones. A slip, the bike and road are unforgiving. Certain tips would come in handy.

n Major accidents happen in the initial days of ownership. Do not rush through; allow the whole experience to sink in and have couple of hundred kilometer on odometer before you have confidence to pull the throttle.

n Try finding riding clubs in your city. It is advisable to ride as a group than solo, for many reasons. One, should there be mechanical problem you have an assistance by your side. Superbikes don’t have road side mechanics, so as to speak as of now. Two, you make new contacts and get in touch with people sharing same passion. Three, it’s safe.

n Keep your emotions in control, do not get swayed. Superbikes being a rare sight in our country many a commuters buck you to race. Do not fall for the trap. In case of eventuality, its nobody else’s loss but yours.

n Know your machine. It’s not rocket science; pay attention when getting your bike serviced/attended to at the dealership. Know your machines capacities and limitations.

n In group rides, keep ego at bay and lend a keen ear to veterans. Nothing teaches you like hands on experience.

Finally, know this; the machine is for you to enjoy and not the other way around.

Too tempting to resist

Eating a few cubes of dark chocolate could help prevent heart disease, a new study has claimed. Researchers claim that they have found clear evidence to support their long standing belief that a small amount of cocoa-rich chocolate could benefit the hearts of some people.

Their study, which combined the results of 42 clinical rather than observational trials, found that people fed chocolate or cocoa also had improved blood vessel function and a dip in their insulin levels. On an average, chocolate lovers had a few points knocked off their blood pressure. “My takeaway message would be that if people like dark chocolate, then eating a little in place of other ‘treat’ foods is fine and may be beneficial. However, the evidence is not yet good enough to suggest that we should all be doing this,” a publication quoted researcher Lee Hooper, of Norwich Medical School as saying.

The paper suggests that there may be heart health benefits from consumption of cocoa or dark chocolate, but these findings are not conclusive.

Previous research has shown that dark chocolate inhibits an enzyme that raises blood pressure. And it also contains health-boosting flavonoids found in nuts, soy, tea and wine.

“This review, though interesting, is not a cue to overindulge our sweet tooth. The paper suggests that there may be heart health benefits from consumption of cocoa or dark chocolate, but these findings are not conclusive,” Victoria Taylor, at the British Heart Foundation.

“What also remains unanswered is whether these benefits outweigh the negative aspects of chocolate on our health from the saturated fat and calories that will also come with it.” “So, if you like chocolate, keeping it to small amounts as part of a balanced diet is still the best way to keep your heart healthy and your taste buds satisfied.” The study is in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” Taylor added. —ANI

Love to work out

It’s like a routine to me. I feel fresh and energetic after a work out. Sometimes my work doesn’t allow me to go to the gym but then I train at home. I workout for four days a week without fail and I try to put in one and half hours in each session.

Workout regime

If I miss my gym then I train at home. I make it a point to warm up with only free hand exercises targeting the body part that I am going to work out on. I work on one body part a day. I rest for two days a week. I love swimming so I hit the pool whenever I get a chance which balances for my cardio exercise. I also make it a point to have a protein shake after my workout as it helps in rejuvenating the muscles.

My diet

My diet is pretty simple. I try and eat every two hours. As soon as I wake up I have a glass of water followed with soaked almonds.

My happiness quotient

Peace of mind is very important to be healthy, if you are happy from within it shows. Being positive ultimately leads to a stress free life and I am an extremely positive person so that definitely works.

My Idea of relaxation

Meditation helps me be at peace and it allows me spend time with myself. It’s a very special place to be in tune with oneself where no one can disturb you. It’s almost magical and after meditation I feel so relaxed.

Hobbies

When you do what you like you feel happy. So you should follow your heart and continue your hobby. Whenever I am free I try to spend time with friends, dinners and movies, long drives, and music.
