Poetic musings
Well-known poet Jaswant Deed whose latest book of poetry Aawagavn has hit the market talks about his creative process
Nonika Singh

Sahitya Akademi award recipient Jaswant Deed may not be a prolific poet, but words remain the cause cèlébre of his life. Na mein aadi, na anant daa jaaeya, naa mein jamna marna, Mein taan akharan de junein hi aawagaman cha rahena. Others may pray for moksha, he seeks no respite from the web of words and would like to be reborn a writer time and again. So he continues to create the poetic imagery of the modern world, the struggle of contemporary man, man-woman relationships and much more. On love, his stance is candid, “There is no permanence in love. If first love is special, the second, third and fourth can be equally exhilarating.”

His latest book Aaawagavn takes on from the last one, Kamandal, and revolves around similar concerns, both metaphysical and physical. More recently spirituality laces his poems, but it is never ever devoid of reality of life. And his realism focuses on today’s world, of which we all are a part, not some utopian chimera. In a short poem he talks of ephemeral friendships based on mobile phones, in yet another he shares the dilemmas of NRIs settled abroad. As his son is trying to get Deed a permanent residency card in Canada, one poem is dedicated to the quest and the futility of chasing dreams in foreign lands. In fact, much of what he writes, he admits unabashedly starts from I as he reasons, “How can I do justice to the experiences of others? I must first internalise what I write.” Of course, he also understands that poetry is not an exercise in self-indulgence and “must transcend the I.” As he writes in the poem Leekhtan — Lekhak turde jaanege, peechon pad da rahega koi, jad da rahega ehanan andar apni tasveer (After writers are no more, readers will find a connect and see their own image in the poetry.)

But are there readers of Punjabi literature? He nods an emphatic yes and adds, “It is a myth that nobody reads. There are enough readers, moreso among the younger generation.” And it’s for this discerning tribe Hai, mera pathak, hai, Mein us layi apna lahu jod da rehnda that he word paints the world he is trying to understand and grapple with.On critical acclaim and applause he is a trifle brutal. Though he has been honoured with prestigious awards, including Shiromani Punjabi Kavi Samman, he asserts that he doesn’t write for critics. Or for entertainment and garnering wahs wahs! Though some of his books like Kamandal have gone into second edition, readership, he is adamant, is not the barometer of good writing. By that logic he feels writers of pulp fiction who sell in lakhs would be the greatest.

Instead he opines, “Only words that create a dilemma, a conflict is everlasting.” Will he survive, only time will be a witness? But nothing will deter him from staring at the world in the eye and from delving deep within — in contemplation and self-introspection. As for words, Lahu andar shabad, lagataaar aren’t they an inseparable part of him anyway?

Nothing wear-y about it!
According to a latest study women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear. We check what some of them from Chandigarh have to say on the issue
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Women and clothes are synonymous with each other, literally! Though their mutual admiration is famous, now we have a study to support it. “Women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear. On an average, women spend 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear and around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night. The time goes further to 52 minutes when deciding to pack things for a holiday.”

Well, this is quite debatable but we throw the ball in the women’s court and ask them to shed light on the real relationship between garment and them.

“To some extent it’s true, but I have a reason to justify why we take so much time to decide about clothes,” says Richa Taneja, a home-maker from Panchkula. She adds, “Women are great planners and clothes are their weakness. When it comes to the most important thing — dressing up - they definitely want to look their best, so they take the maximum time. I would like to add that men take equal time these days. Why blame only women.” We agree! “I do agree that women think a lot about clothes and it’s not their clothes alone, but also what other women are wearing,” says Betty Nangia from Betty’s Holistic Clinic in Sector 8. She adds, “Everyday we are looking for something new and when we don’t find that something new, we try mix ‘n’ match, which takes all the time.”

It’s a fact that if you look good you feel good! Says Ridhima Arora from Ritu La Vichtra, a boutique in Mohali, “Clothes definitely have a positive affect. When you are looking good, you get lots of compliments and that not only makes you feel good, but also boosts your confidence.” Commenting on the study, she says, “I do agree that women are in love with clothes, but men are also equally interested nowadays. They spend equal time looking for clothes and deciding what to wear.”

“I must say women do take a little time to decide, but then they take less time to dress-up,” says Ritika Gupta, a banker. She adds, “For working women they have a pre-decided wardrobe and they don’t have that much time to keep thinking on what to wear, but yes, for special occasions we do take our sweet time.”

While the researchers behind the study also say that most time is spent on picking a killer ensemble for a party or an occasion, selecting the right clothes for a holiday takes more time. Agrees Ritu Kochar, corporate director, INIFD, “Selecting clothes for a special occasion definitely takes time and when you know some eyes will be on you, one definitely wants to look good. And I believe it’s not only women who do that, but men these days also take equal time.”

Here come the Bad Boys

Rasta Thomas, founding member and dancing superstar who has performed at the Academy Awards, and appeared in Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze-starrer feature film One Last Dance is thrilled to be performing in India for the first time.

After smoothly swaying their way into the hearts of millions across the globe, international ballet and contemporary dance group Bad Boys of Dance (BBD) is commencing a seven-city tour of India.

Rasta Thomas, founding member and dancing superstar who has performed at the Academy Awards, and appeared in Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze-starrer feature film One Last Dance is thrilled to be performing in India for the first time.

“It began with a dream, to make a change, to be different. It’s been a wonderful experience. But it’s been a struggle. I wanted to encourage a younger audience, to accept and appreciate dancing. There’s still a stereotype that ballet is boring and that dancing is only for girls. I wanted to educate the younger audience,” says Thomas.

Owing his roots to classical ballet, Thomas pointed out that the youth is more interested in hip hop and contemporary dances.

“We try to eliminate the fundamental reason but keep the basis of ballet and dancing and just add some spice to it, says the 31 year old dancer whose troupe is being supported by the American Centre. Thomas who held a workshop with local dancers seemed to even mull an Indian ballet group. “Indian dancers are very passionate, they know how to tell a story, people are very engaging and kind, all the great qualities that most dancers have,” he says. —PTI

Mischa goes retro

Former ‘OC’ star Mischa Barton and her mother Nuala are launching a retro-inspired clothing and accessories range.

The 26-year-old actress, who already has her own collection of handbags, will launch the new line later this year. “We could not be more pleased to announce the partnership between aLine media and Mischa Barton. aLine’s respect and influence in the industry will provide Mischa Barton with the opportunity to take the brand to the next level as we continue to design unique and fashionable clothing and accessories,” said Nuala.

Last year, Barton said that she was planning a fashion line incorporating a variety of eras. “It’s something I really want to do. It’ll be forties-meets-seventies with the occasionally bit of twenties - that sounds a bit random, but I’ll take elements of different decades,” she said. —PTI

Love makes the world go…
Nonika Singh

Movie: London Paris New York
Director: Anu Menon
Cast: Ali Zafar, Aditi Rao Hydari
Rating: Above average

Here’s a rom.com that works by and large, has romance, love and even meaning. Add to it some great chemistry between the lead pair and the tale of our lovers, spread across three beautiful cities of the world, has several ingredients that make you smile at the recklessness of love and the sheer joy it brings to those touched by it. What is refreshing about this modern-day love story, as is with many others of this genre, is that there are no indignant parents playing the spoilsport.

Sure enough, Nikhil Chopra (Ali Zafar) and Lalitha Krishnan (Aditi Rao Hydari), come from diametrically different backgrounds, have very different interests too. But none of it comes in the way of their love (and high voltage attraction). What actually does prevent them from coming together from the time they meet are their own confusions and dilemmas. And, of course, the long distance between them as both are not only placed in different continents but also because Lalitha doesn’t care for long distance relationships where computer holds the glue.

The three cities, London, Paris and New York, where the love story is set are actually three milestones in their journey of love. In London the love has a fresh simplicity and innocence, in Paris it is bold and wild and in New York it finally finds its maturation. Of course, like many a rom.coms this one too progresses on a time-tested formula. Yet, the directorial fineness lies in keeping you engaged. Besides, here is yet another proof that romance is coming of age in Hindi cinema, in sync with the attitudes of Gen Y who is frank, upright and honest about their feelings for each other. So, Nikhil not only has the gumption to tell the lovely Lalitha that he finds her attractive but also the gall to call her a tease.

In fact, the dialogues are not only crisp and witty but so true of the young generation that they seem to gel naturally with the characters. So does the film’s music (by who else but pop icon Ali Zafar) particularly the song Woh Dekhne Mein and the locales that blend with the narrative, beautiful in its appeal, but not even once overshadowing the story of the lead characters.

In fact, the entire focus of the film is on the love birds. No cameos, no peripheral characters, only minor interjections here and there, including a fleeting presence of actor Dalip Tahil. Yet the tempo is maintained by both Ali Zafar and Aditi Rao who are equally convincing in their love, confusion and angst. Zafar’s outburst in the climax has just the right degree of a turmoil of a man in love. Both Zafar and Aditi pull off the movie for most parts that is. More appealingly in the first half and a trifle less in the second one where the predictability of the storyline dilutes some of the playfulness of their romance. Nevertheless, the short (less than two hours) and sweet love story does manage to tug at your heart strings. Watchable fare for sure.

Express your desire
The newly-opened Soya Express is indeed a food paradise
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Vegetarian palate is no more ‘standard’ with panner tikka and vegetable kebab ruling the roost. Now, we have innovative minds dishing up mouth-watering dishes for the people who love greens! And bringing it to your plate is the Soya Express in Sector 34.

This joint is a food paradise, especially for the veggies as they can savour the flavours and textures of non-vegetarian delicacies in a vegetarian product. Though this is a chain of restaurants that is already present in Delhi, Gurgoan and Meerut, for our city this is the first outlet.

While it’s the innovation of the product that makes this joint a must-visit, the taste too is an added incentive. For the ambience, it is a take-away joint that has a few tables to stand and eat outside the joint, but it’s worth it.

Well, if you like you can have a complete meal here, but what we suggest is to go for the starters. Offering a variety right from Afghani champ to malai tikka, tandoori tikka, haryali seekh kebab, bharwan champ to gulabo rani, they have rocking rolls that come in a variety like Afghani roll, soya special roll and haryali chaap roll. For the tawa items they have a variety in tawa chaap masala and tawa tikka masala. If you are skeptical about the taste, you need not, the dishes taste almost like their non-vegetarians counterparts (but not exactly the same), as the masalas and the way of preparation remains to be the same.

For the ones who want to try more, can have their thalis. They have the special soya express thali and this includes two-pieces of tawa chaap masala, one naan, two rotis and salad. Other than this you can try tawa thali, kadhai, nizami, mezbaan or handi thali. For the meetha, they have the very traditional khullad kheer, so you can have your fill with a blend of dishes innovative as well as traditional!

A matter of language
SP Gupta, a Hindi writer and critic, says for Hindi to prosper, we need to change the mentality of the younger generation
Mona

When most of the present generation believes in a global world, there are few who rue the loss of culture and heritage. SP Gupta, a Hindi writer and critic, is one among them. “It’s been six decades since Independence. Sadly, very little work has been done in our own languages,” says Gupta, who has done voluminous work in criticism.

He shares with us his literary journey. “I inherited love for literature from my father Roshan Lal Patialvi. He was a known Urdu writer and ensured that I take up Hindi, as he thought after Independence this language will have a great future,” he says.

Gupta researched extensively in Hindi literature of Punjab written in Gurumukhi script. “I was fortunate to access the vast hidden treasures lying in the dark archives of Moti Bagh Palace, Patiala. I am happy that I could salvage the names of some 500 writers of repute with 5,000 works,” he says.

Apart from criticism, Gupta’s books are prescribed in schools. His recent works have been Hamare Rashtrapati and Hamare Pradhanmantri.

Gupta continues his works though he sees a dark future for Hindi. “We need to change the mentality if we want our languages to prosper. Today, talking and writing in Hindi is considered being lowly. English is what is in and happening.”

Gupta, in his eighties, is busy reviewing books, writing and compiling a book of letters that he gathered over the years. “You know I have some three letters from Harivansh Rai Bachchan,” Gupta’s eyes gleam though his hands shake.

“Sadly, languages got tied down with religion in our country. And in our internal struggle, English took advantage,” he signs off.

In the name of God...

Though their two daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, were pushing for a Disney-themed moniker for their baby brother, when it came to naming the newest addition to their family, the couple opted for something more traditional, reported a magazine.

“We are happy to announce on February 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck,” Affleck, 39, shared on Facebook. Samuel, a Biblical name with Hebrew origins, translates to either “name of God” or “God has heard.” The name has also consistently ranked in the top 50 most popular boys’ names in the US, and was the 24th most popular choice for boys born in 2010. — PTI

The Sin City star, mother to Honor Marie, 3, and Haven, 6 months, said she was uncomfortable in dressed and heels when she was younger.

“I didn’t wear a lot of colour. I guess I’ve been more adventurous with my style and clothes since I’ve become a mother. When I was younger, I was really uncomfortable in dresses and high heels. Over the years, I’ve embraced a more feminine side,” said Alba.

Twins thrill

I am thrilled to be carrying twins like actresses Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, and Julia Roberts. My husband Peter and I love children so we are getting two at a time! (laughs!)  The pregnancy has gone very well. I have great doctors in Dubai and a very comfortable life. My friends keep visiting me and Peter is very supportive and sweet.

Name game

I think names are very important for children because it stays with them all their lives! So we are putting a lot of thought into their names which are unique and carry the culture of both our countries.

Multi-tasking

I am reading scripts and considering endorsements and I have signed a film which will begin in July. My mother-in-law will look after the twins at that time.

Storming the DESERT
The Desert Storm rally is not for the weak-hearted. Here are a few bravehearts from Chandigarh who went through it all to emerge winners

Manpriya Singh

Talk of motorsports and some things are part of the package — sandy dunes, rocky terrains, technical snags, a few seconds and hundreds of kmph! The recently concluded Desert Storm rally, organised jointly by Maruti Suzuki and Northern Motorsports, stood true to its name and turned out to be quite a stormy affair for very many. Mind you, no first-timers here. “This is for the first time that so many vehicles got stuck in the first stage itself. Several experienced drivers were eliminated in the first stage itself,” Harkaran Singh, a finisher, is back from the one week affair and still recounting the travails of the extreme category.

So was yet another Chandigarh-based participant, Pardeep Gupta. The 59-year-old businessman finished all the competitive stages, one running into 350 kms at a stretch. He says, “The first stage was the toughest. It was a run in the night amidst all the wrong sand dunes, jungles, dry salt beds; it was no mean business.” Having finished third in the extreme group V, he expected the hitches and glitches. Nonetheless, many finishers from the city were taken by surprise.

Recalls yet another extreme finisher, overall 5th ranker from Chandigarh Harpreet Bawa, who drove a Gypsy from the team Thunderbolt, “During the first stage of night run spanning 30 kms, our car got stuck and we ended up wasting 60 minutes.” It’s pretty much a similar story or rather a sob story by now. Adds Pardeep Gupta, “In the extreme category, there are a couple of things that you need to get right. First is the vehicle preparation, for which major modifications are required. Second is the navigators ability and third of course your own driving skills.”

Talking about the navigating experience, a first-time position holder Samrat Yadav, 24, says, “It was my navigation experience in Australian Gascoyne Dash that helped me execute the Desert Storm easily.” It was Samrat’s go-getting attitude coupled with Gupta’s maturity and of course the well-modified Vitara that helped the duo achieve their victory in the event. Jagmeet Gill, from the Maruti team, who stood second in the endurance category, shares his side of the story. “With each passing year, the terrain is just getting tougher, I am glad to have survived it,” he chuckles, proud of his Gypsy.

Says Pardeep Gupta, “In India, motorsports is still in its infancy, but if we consider Chandigarh then the scene is pretty good. For instance, SJOBA was one of the first ones to have started a motorsports adventure and now it is one of the national platforms.” As of now, the participants are back, recuperating from the high and lows of sand dunes, inhospitable terrain of the Rann of Kutch. But
they can’t wait to get set for the upcoming SJOBA rally. We already hear the vrooming sounds!

Women in Britain do make-up in public transport

More and more women are preferring to put on their make-up while commuting for work rather than in the privacy of their own bathrooms, says a British survey which found seven out of 10 women applying all their cosmetics while being on public transport.

The Debenhams survey found those who make-up their faces before leaving home, nine out of 10 touch it up on the train, Tube or bus.

Even though eyeliner was deemed the most difficult to apply, a third of women said they still attempted it every day. Lipstick was the most common cosmetic applied on the move, followed by pressed powder and blusher.

Interestingly, over three-quarters of the survey women said they suffered a make-up mishap caused by sudden traffic stops, being pushed by fellow passengers or juggling cosmetics and a mirror while standing on a packed train or bus. —IANS

Emraan in a Yash Raj film

The success of The Dirty Picture, Murder 2, and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai has changed the fortunes of Emraan Hashmi's career. He is now doing a Yash Raj movie directed by Parmeet Sethi. Emraan talks about awards, new movies, his image, music and more.

Music maker
My music becomes popular but I don't listen to it. The music directors and the makers look after the music. I listen to progressive trance and am not into my songs that become popular.

New movies
I have signed new movies with Dharma and Yash Raj but I will talk about them at a formal announcement. I am excited about the movies and roles.

Image issues
I know I have the serial kisser tag and it is going to haunt me until I die. What to do? I am doing films that break that stereotype. I like doing different roles.

Lazy looks
People tell me that women like me for my rough and tough image and that is by default. I am lazy about shaving which is why I have the rugged look.

Award functions
I don't like award functions and it isn't a case of sour grapes. I am happy for Vidya who has swept the awards. I have attended a couple of events and it doesn't give me the high it gives others so I avoid them altogether.

Roshni Chopra loves hosting

Smart, sweet, chirpy and fashionable Roshni Chopra is popular as a host on TV with Comedy Circus behind her. She claims she loves hosting, which requires intellect and a glam quotient. Being married, she juggles work and home well and tells us she is proud of her younger sister.

What do you think is your sex appeal?

I think that is for others to decide but I feel as a television host one not only needs glamour but brains as well. We have get ourselves into the spirit of the show. I can’t explain but a host has to feel the show and fit the profile for things to work.

Who is your fashion icon?

I don’t have a fashion icon but I do love the retro classics worn by Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana etc. I like being comfortable and these women don’t shy away from expressing themselves. They are not afraid of being a woman all the way which is what I love.

After doing films, will you work in TV as an actress?

I recently debuted with Phirr for which I received appreciation and I am in talks for few film projects but I wouldn’t want to name any now. As for working on TV, I have always said that the medium isn’t important, the role the project is important for me. So, if I get a meaty role in a television show, I wouldn’t mind doing it. But for now, I am enjoying hosting shows.

How do you juggle marriage and work? Which is a priority for you?

Nothing is tough if you really want to do it. For me, both my marriage and my work are priorities. I am lucky and thankful to God that I don’t have to choose one over the other. My husband supports me totally in everything I do. Moreover, I am a homebody and love being at home post work. I feel nothing should feel like an effort like Oh God, I have a 12 hour shift or Oh God I have manage dinner today. I am enthusiastic about all roles in my life be it wife, actress, host etc.

Do you think married actresses or working women have additional responsibilities vis-a-vis married working men?

If your birthday is March 3...

Misunderstanding with the superiors and non co-operation from colleagues will compel some of you to take a break. Though business will be normal, many problems will suddenly crop up. You will get recognition and appreciation at work and will be able to impress your superiors with good communication.

However, financial matters may bring you mixed results. You will have serious and focused approach towards relationships. Health will be moderate. Handle money matters carefully. There are some major changes at work in your sector so you can aspire to reach a higher position with more responsibility. If you are an employee and someone asks you to do a task which is not really one of your skills, you will still tackle the situation.

Try to see things from the point of view of old friends who may be distant.  Make an attempt to reconnect. But if you make the move, you should be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.  Try to keep all the promises you made.  But next time, do not be so quick to give your word. Your wealth will be your spouse and children. Children will be a source of joy. Those single may not meet their match this year. Seek blessing from the elders will bring in success. You will get new opportunities to earn more. You may invest in fixed assets. You can also invest in stocks and shares.

Friends are an excellent source of balance for you to field thoughts and emotions and give yourself a sounding board to bounce things around with. Find Aquarius, Libra, Aries, Leo and other Gemini pals and strike up a good game of ‘what if,’ or ‘what do you think of.’

Some of you may suffer from high blood pressure, or nervous breakdown. Some of you may have to spend on their vehicle. Avoid those friends who love to eat, drink and be merry all the time.

Your love life stays healthy with varied stimulation, so be experimental. Your primal desires may be at odds with your romantic sensibility. But you’re good at holding paradox, and may find similar contradictions in your mate.
