Inter-college competition
Dera Bassi, March 2 Theme of competition was “Getting to Zero-Zero AIDS related Deaths”. There were competitions of power point presentations, quiz on AIDS awareness, “nukkad natak, histronics, rangoli, poster making, pot painting, collage making, T-shirt painting, slogan writing, embroidery, kandh chitrakari drug abuse. In nukkad natak event, the RIMT college, Patiala, stood first. In power-point presentation, the first prize won by Shivalik College of Education. In Histrionics, first prize won by DS Gurukul College. The trophy of overall best performance was won by DS Gurukul College. Rajesh Tripathi, the SDM, Dera Bassi was the chief guest. |

One killed, three hurt in mishaps
Ambala, March 2 The students, Shabina (17), Afsana (16) and Deepak (17) were admitted to a hospital. The car driver managed to flee. A case has been registered against the driver. In another incident, a farmer was killed when a vehicle hit him on the Ambala-Jagadhari road last night. The police has sent the body to a hospital for an autopsy. A case has been registered. Body found Ambala: A body of an elderly person was recovered from the inn of Gurdwara Manjisahib at Ambala City on Friday. The body was identified as Harjeet Singh Walia, a resident of Delhi. Sources said Harjeet had been staying in the gurdwara for the past five days. When he did not open the door of his room this morning, the sevadar of got suspicious and informed the matter to the police. It broke the door and found that Harjeet was lying unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. Judge on surprise visit
Mohali: The District Sessions Judge , Ropar, GK Dhir, today conducted a surprise check at the Mohali district courts here today. The judge said on a trial basis, the authorities had appointed two advocates to conduct evidence of defence and prosecution on MACT cases. This would reduce the court’s burden and advocates would earn fee from conducting evidence. He also spoke on “Free Legal Services Aid”. The advocates demanded that 32 villages should be included in Mohali district. |

Three held guilty in bank robbery case; three let off
Panchkula, March 2 The quantum of punishment to the three accused, Amit Yadav, Rohit Khasa and Sameer Nain would be pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge on March 5. However, the court acquitted the other three accused, Naresh, Raj and Pawan, after the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them. The three accused belonged to the dreaded Badri gang which was involved in various cases of loot and murder in Haryana and other parts of the country. The gang was wiped out in an encounter last year. The main accused in the case, Yadav, had kept a major share of the loot while the remaining part was given to Sameer Nain. The police had also arrested a Chandigarh resident, Ved Prakash Dhingra, who had rented out his house to Amit Yadav, the main accused in the bank and PC Jewellers robbery cases. Dhingra was arrested under Section 188 of IPC for not getting his tenants' background verified with police. |

Domestic help alleges torture
Panchkula, March 2 As per information, 18-year-old Karan, who was working as a domestic help for the past two years, had alleged that the Army officer’s son Karan used to beat him occasionally. He alleged that his landlord’s son used to throw hot water, milk or other items on him, besides giving him a regular thrashing. He alleged that he had not been paid salary for the past seven to eight months and the family did not allow him to go out of the house. Chowki in charge Rishi Pal said the family had not made the payment, as the parents of Karan had not visited the city during the past six months. He said false allegations were levelled by Karan as no burn marks were found on his body. The boy had left for his native place with his parents, he added. |

HUDA defers commercial auction
After failing to finalise reserve price for sites, the Haryana Urban Development Authority
(HUDA) has deferred the auction of 88 commercial sites in Panchkula. Earlier, the HUDA had decided to auction sites on February 21 but now they it has deferred the auction to March 21. HUDA is auctioning shop-cum-offices
(SCOs) booths, three-storeyed shops, double-storeyed shops and even two school sites.
Constable gets life term
The Panchkula court on February 25 awarded a life imprisonment to
Teja, a resident of Solan, for stabbing a Panchkula police constable, Suresh Kumar, to death in 2010. Accused
Teja, a vehicle thieve, had stabbed Suresh Kumar when the latter was trying to nab him outside the Yavanika Garden in Sector 5.
Dr Sumit Sofat in trouble
The Panchkula police moved the district courts here to summon Dr Sumit Sofat’s driver Nelson as an accused in the 2009 Morni shootout incident. The police told the court that Nelson was never shot at and the bullet was planted inside his body by doctors. Dr Sofat had cooked up the shootout story to falsely implicate Ludhiana-based businessman Ramesh Pashan and his family members. |

Panjab University outplay Youth Club
handigarh, March 2 After lemon break right striker Gurteshwar scored the second goal with solo efforts in dying minutes. The win gave PU Campus three full points. In the second super league outing, Principal AG (Audit) Haryana outplayed Sports Club, Sector 23, Chandigarh, 5-1. Haryana forwards meant business from the kick off and mounted pressure on the rival team and opened their account in the 25th minute through right winger Naresh with solo efforts. In the next minute, Audit got a free kick which was taken by right stopper Harvinder whose powerful shot hit the goal-post and went out. Elevated by this goal, Audit Haryana forwards mounted more pressure and made many dangerous moves which were well saved by the rival goalkeeper at the cost of corner kicks. A first half score was 1-0 in favour of Audit Haryana. After lemon break, AG, Audit goal had a narrow escape when the first time shot of Balbir, right winger of Sports Club, hit the goal post and went out. Sports Club managed to equalise in the 45th minute and the scorer was their right striker Balbir who beat the Audit goalkeeper Kulvinder Singh with his powerful ground shot. Haryana scored their second goal in the 50th minute when right striker Harvinder gave a pass to left striker Kartik Bhardwaj who scored with a diagonal shot. Now, it was the turn of right striker of Harvinder of Haryana who scored the third goal with solo efforts. Naresh and Suraj scored two more goals for AG Haryana. With the victory, Audit Haryana earned three points. |
