Bollywood actress Mahie Gill wants to explore the world of comedy, something which she has not done till now
Jasmine Singh

Change is life, reinventing the spice of it. Toss in some challenges, add some strength, some wisdom….and well you are almost good. Bollywood actor Mahie Gill of Dev D fame is all ready to whip up a new recipe in her professional life. No, she isn’t lobbying hard to walk the red carpet. All she is trying to do is laugh more. That’s about it!

In Chandigarh to attend her friend’s wedding, the pretty actor talks about her utmost desire to do different kinds of roles, other than the serious ones. “Maybe a comedy or anything else, as an actor I want to challenge myself and see how good I am. People appreciate my serious roles and I know that I essay them well. However, now I want to try out various other roles.” It is a good actors’ desperate attempt to be different and Mahie wants directors to invest the same faith in her. “I am glad that I am given scripts that are written keeping me in mind, but its time to add a pinch of salt to my professional recipe,” she smiles as she poses for us at the Oxy Gym.

No hang-ups, no star-status bug buzzing around; Mahie is still the small-town Chandigarh girl finding her place in the big city of dreams — Mumbai. For once she is glad that the industry has accepted her. “I had no god-father, no one to look up to when I came to Mumbai. I am honoured at how Bollywood has accepted me so beautifully with time. Now, I want them to accept me as a versatile actor.” We wonder if it is the Silk effect! “Vidya Balan is a talented actor who has done great work in Dirty Picture. The difference is that Vidya works under big banners, which I probably don’t,” Mahie says without consciously wanting to draw any parallels.

Big budget, so this is where the difference lies? Probably, this is yet another ingredient she can throw in! “A good script, directed by a good actor is what makes all the difference. If a film is made well and not marketed well, it might not be able to create the same magic that a well-marketed film does. It is 80 per cent the director and rest 20 per cent other factors, which create a zing at the box-office,” smiles Mahie expressing her wish to work with a fresher lot of directors. She will soon be seen in upcoming projects Paan Singh Tomar and Mayanagari, in addition to two more untitled projects.

About Punjabi cinema, we couldn’t help but ask. “I am getting a lot of offers and I would want to do something in this medium if the script interests me,” she is clear.

There is something more we couldn’t help asking. Wedding…we can hear her giggling. “Will let you know when I do that,” she laughs. Spoken like a true actor who’s waiting to inject some fresh ingredients into her career.

A friendly touch
Tusshar Kapoor is out to reconcile long lost friends in soon-to-be-aired television show Superstar Santa and is upbeat about his upcoming romantic comedy Chaar Din ki Chandani
Manpriya Khurana

Tusshar Kapoor & Kulraj Randhawa
Tusshar Kapoor & Kulraj Randhawa

The moral of the story is —he’s stuck on. Despite an uneven series of downs and rarely dotted ups, he’s managed to remain etched in the minds of people. Throw in a couple of television promotions, multi-starrers, appearances and Tusshar Kapoor has actually survived despite being unsuccessful. As of now, along with Kulraj Randhawa he’s out to reconcile long lost friends in soon-to-be-aired television show Superstar Santa.

Think three warring friends being a victim of the Chinese Whisper syndrome. “There is this misunderstanding between them that needs to be sorted out. They haven’t been in touch with each other and have even had a tough time communicating. Kulraj and me try to bridge that gap among these friends,” he takes his new-found role of playing an agony aunt seriously.

How much can he personally relate to the estranged friends in question though, remains to be known. “Quite a number of times I either get irritated or we don’t get in touch, but luckily I’ve always managed to make peace and stay with my friends.” There comes a message too. “You need to just pick up the phone and communicate, that’s the key to ending all misunderstandings.” Speaking of which, his friends that is, they are all spread across the industry. “I have friends both within the industry and outside, though more than actors I have producers, directors and technicians as friends,” and he wriggles out of dropping names.

If there’s one thing that he’s looking forward to the most these days, it is his upcoming romantic comedy Chaar Din ki Chandani. “I play this Rajasthani guy called Veer. He’s from a royal family and very close to his father. He brings home this hardcore Punjabi girl played by Kulraj. The rest of the movie is a comic caper and an attempt to cover up her identity.”

His career never really took off; nevertheless he’s managed to stay aground, especially at a place where it’s difficult to sustain even success. Television is what he doesn’t look at, at least in the near future. “Though I wouldn’t say I’d never do it but that’s not something I’d be doing in the near future, though I make appearances on television shows for my film promotions.” Then there’s the Shootout at Wadala, another upcoming movie, he’s keeping his fingers crossed about. “There’s a movie that has comedy, action and emotional appeal to it. It’s about a gang of guys who are cons.” He’s hopeful of his future and we leave it like that!

Tale of three cities
Aditi Rao Hydari and Ali Zafar are busy promoting their upcoming flick London, Paris, New York. While Aditi relates the best to London, Ali is all for New York

SCREEN Magic: Aditi Rao Hydari and Ali Zafar
SCREEN Magic: Aditi Rao Hydari and Ali Zafar

Aditi Rao Hydari and Ali Zafar, the lead pair of London, Paris, New York is on a roll. Film promotions are as hectic as their 29-day-movie schedule. The duo shares their take…

“The shooting was frantic but fun. To be in three happening cities around the world, what more one can ask for?” says Aditi. This Bharatnayam dancer, who made brief appearances in Delhi-6, Yeh Saali Zindagi and Rockstar and won appreciation, explains, “For me, it takes the conviction and not the length of the role to say yes to a film.”

However, she considers herself lucky to have landed a lead role. “In playing a supporting role you get to enact only a part of a character, while a lead role gives you the liberty to give a wholesome performance,” she says. Playing Lalitha Krishnan in LPNY gave her one such chance. “In a way I quite relate to the character I play. Lalitha is a girl lost in her own world, who studies politics and aims to change the world. I am also lost in my world, a little different than Lalitha’s though.”

The story of three nights unfolds in three different cities, of which, Lalitha relates to London the most. “The city is the right mix of tradition and modernity, something that I am like in real life,” says Aditi, who not only enjoyed playing the leading lady but also singing a song for the flick!

Good shot

Well, it’s difficult to bracket Ali Zafar in a single frame. He made a stir by playing Ali Hassan in Tere Bin Laden. In London, Paris, New York, not only does he play the protagonist Nikhil but also sings and composes music for the film. What was more challenging? “I would call the experience ‘great’. Be it composing music or acting, each has fun side to it that I explored fully well in LPKY.” Out of the three cities, it’s New York that Ali connects to the best. “It’s the buzz about the city that’s most exhilarating.” Is there a pressure to meet the level of expectations? “There is. I have given my best shot. Rest depends on how audience reacts to it,” quips Ali.

The real self
Navneet Nishan, known for essaying the role of Tara on television, wants to see Gul Panag in the same role if the serial is made again
Mona

Telly tale: Navneet Nishan
Telly tale: Navneet Nishan

That appearances are deceptive, is a given. Even more so in tinsel town…is what we realised on Thursday evening. The ‘rich bi***’ of the industry, Navneet Nishan, came calling to Chandigarh to promote Zee TV’s show Hitler Didi, which she is making an entry into.

The quintessential vamp of the screen, Navneet is all-attentive ands unassuming. She clears the air, “Strangely, the industry typecast me into an image that’s entirely the opposite of the real me.” Not a party person at all, Navneet rather spends time challenging herself creatively. She cooks, paints, designs…lately her jewellery has been picked by some boutiques. She has designed costumes for two Punjabi films Yaraan Naal Baharaan and Asa Nu Maan Watna Da. “But I am bad businesswoman,” she confesses.

This National School of Drama actor (she also studied at the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University) was hesitant of getting typecast initially. “When I was offered the role of Maya in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, I asked — ‘Sir, I am an NSD graduate, how can I play a bimbet?’ But after listening to the script I said yes.”

Since then Navneet has essayed many roles, significant among them being that of a contemporary urban woman Tara in the soap by the same name. How has television changed since you joined? She thinks; searches for right words before she answers, “Unfortunately, people were dealing with contemporary themes when Tara was made. Then followed the era of ‘saas bahu’ sagas and just when one thought this phase would be over, there came villages on screen.” However, Navneet knows the reality of the world that she is part of. “It’s business. Serials are made as someone is making money. Also, TV has reached villages; there are audiences out there and the shows are catering to them.”

TV might be called regressive, but then it runs many homes. “That’s why we also act in serials,” says Navneet, who is as honest in discussing her background, as her failed marriage; work that she is not proud of, the sole film that she is working on and her desire to act more in Punjabi films. She makes no bones about her stint in acting either. “I have done many roles that are at best forgettable.” And what she is proud of is her film Raat Gayi Baat Gayi.

“Sadly, not many got to see it,” she acknowledges. Her roles in Raja Hindustani, Tum Bin, Kya Kehna and more recently “My Name Is Khan have kept her alive in viewers’ memories. She is presently working in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. She is also looking forward to making a comeback to theatre.

Playing Rich

Navneet Nishan plays a nouveau riche mother in Zee TV’s Hitler Didi. “It’s the genre I am working in forever, so it comes easy, but the character here is cruder than the earlier ones.” Is she an out-an-out scheming ‘to-be’ mother-in-law? “Not really, along with her husband she has struggled hard to raise their two sons, and she is just irked at both of them fighting for a tuti jayi purani Dilli di kudi (worthless girl from Old Delhi).”

Streep, Roberts to play mother-daughter

Julia Roberts Hollywood stars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts have signed on to star in the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play August: Osage County.

The John Wells directed film is based on the play written by Tracy Letts. It follows the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

Streep will play the pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston, while Roberts will portray her daughter Barbara. News of the pairing first surfaced in 2010 but deals and schedules took time to figure out. Streep also is in the middle of the best actress Oscar race for The Iron Lady.

"After seeing Meryl Streep's mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her," Roberts said. — PTI

Designer showcases Lady Gaga inspired collection at the WIFW

Raakesh Agarwal poses with a model
Raakesh Agarwal poses with a model

The edgy, outrageous style of pop sensation Lady Gaga set the tune for designer Raakesh Agarwal’s collection at the ongoing Wills India Fashion Week. “I love Lady Gaga and her style. She has a unique style and no one can emulate it. She knows how to make wacky look good. My collection is more wearable. There are women who want to dress up like Gaga but don’t dare to. This collection is for them,” Agarwal said.

His fall-winter collection mainly consisted of gold metal bustiers, pants and jackets made of faux leather, fur shrugs and jumpsuits.

“I have also been inspired by the architecture of India like the Taj Mahal as well as the other south and central Asian countries like the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. I have used brass to make the bustiers. The brass had to be heated and then moulded. But in the end all the hard work paid off. I used faux leather, a lot of velvet, wool and satin,” he said.

Wild & wacky

Rapper Nicki Minaj says she became fascinated with crazy and colourful hairstyles after watching Cyndi Lauper music videos as a child. Nicki Minaj’s style inspired by Cyndi Lauper London The 29-year-old is known for her wild and wacky fashion choices and hairstyles, and Minaj admits she was inspired by the “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” star, reported a website.

“I’ve always been intrigued by colour and by interesting hair. I was one of those weird little girls doing my own hair at the age of nine. I was, like, getting weird gels and new brushes and cornrow holders.

“When I first went to get my hair coloured, I was about 14 and I wanted blonde highlights. The beautician said, ‘No, you have to get your mother on the phone,’ and I was just crying and begging. I’ve always been experimenting. Cyndi Lauper’s videos — that’s what intrigued me,” Minaj said. And the singer has no intention of toning down her head-turning style because she loves the attention her wardrobe choices garner. “I like the idea of doing something that everyone else is not. I get high off that. Just the idea that other people don’t have the balls to do something - that’s my thing,” she said. — PTI

Art’s best
Interestingly titled as Untitled, the exhibition at the Punjab Kala Bhawan showcases drawings, paintings, photography, print-making and sculptures
Ashima Batish

On either side of the works by Subhash Shorey, there is a deluge of colours. In the works of Vijendra Vij and in the typical characters by Anand Shinde, which are in stark contrast to Shorey’s brush-on-ink work. The palette shifts to shades of grey, in fact on extremes of black and white. Yet absence of colours doesn’t mean that the works are less eye-catching in any manner.

Aptly titled Prakriti Jagat, the works have landscapes, with a focus on trees. “The minute detailing of branches was the real challenge for me. I didn’t want the detailed work to look chaotic once complete.” And in a bid to ensure that, the artist took a year-and-a-half to complete the collection comprising 25 works. Since the size of the works is 12 by 12 inches, these are compiled in two huge canvases, making for his two entries at the exhibition of drawings, paintings, photography, print-making and sculptures, interestingly titled as Untitled, which is on at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, Chandigarh.

The exhibition has been curated well by Mahesh Prajapati, whose works are on display as well. One of his prints, titled Existence, is a tribute to an old university that wasn’t taken care of by the authorities. “I couldn’t do much about it either, except for dedicating a work to the university.” His wife’s Kaumudi work is figurative. The title, Childhood Memories, sufficiently explains the theme behind the work.

Coming back to the colourful works by Anand Shinde, these focus on the common man. The facial features are as always, distinct. “It’s my style and the colour combination is for visual pleasure, which is the primary motive of visual art-forms.”

Anjali Aggarwal continues with her popular Tiger series. Two of the 15 paintings find space at the exhibition. The style of drawing is contemporary, but the pattern used inside the figure has been done using a very old technique. “The series enables me to use the new and old style of painting,” says Aggarwal.

Another artist, S Chandan’s photographs titled Royal Repose and Green Shades are again a mix and match of colours with a dark backdrop. Anand Jaiswal’s experimentation with photographs and prints makes for very interesting art-works. The print forms the base of the work and a cut-out of a photograph on the top gives it a different look. There is something here for every art lover!

The S-day
Why Thursday is the best day to have sex

Thursday mornings are the best time of the week for making love, researchers say. According to a London School of Economics study, natural cortisol levels, which stimulate sex hormones, are at their highest on Thursday.

Therefore, it is recommended that set your alarm clock and get frisky first thing, when testosterone is highest for men and oestrogen levels are up to five times higher for women. Another research by US experts also found that Tuesday is the busiest day of the week in hospital maternity units and that the greatest number of births occur on this day.

And you are 16 per cent more likely to die if you go to hospital on a Sunday rather than a Wednesday. — ANI

Life gets 'most expensive' at 50

Those embarking on their 50s are about to experience the most expensive stage of their lives, a new study has revealed. Experts calculated that people who turn 50 can still expect to be lumbered with hefty mortgage payments while also trying to support teenage children.

The cost of weddings, university fees, motoring costs, mobile phones and house deposits - all add up to the financial pressure.

A typical 50-something is required to spend a total of 1,560 pounds per month only to keep their heads above water, according to the study, by leading UK health and wellbeing mutual organisation Benenden Healthcare Society.

"Reaching 50 is traditionally supposed to be the start of a new lease on life as kids grow older and couples find more time to themselves," Marc Bell, Marketing and Business Strategy director, said.

"The stark reality will prove an eye-opener as 50-somethings realise the truth is not so rose-tinted. Debt rarely goes away as we get older and the rising costs of mortgages, motoring and raising children will paint a pessimistic outlook on life.

"On entering our 50s, more of us are paying for our children's education and taking on more of their day-to-day costs such as mobile phone bills and going out - indicating that we're letting our children become more financially dependent on us,” he said. The study surveyed 2,000 Brits and found that hitting fifty coincided with an acceleration in spending. — ANI

Master Chef
Cold cut
Sheel Nanda

Fish is a delightful dish to make for it requires the least amount of cooking and taste is already there, which just needs to be enhanced with proper sauces or dressings. We in Punjab mostly relish fried fish or tomato fish. So, we thought of experimenting with cold flavours with fish which kept the goodness of this vitamin laden ingredient and yet easy to make.

Method

Beat the mayonnaise sauce. Then add cream and mix well. Add white pepper, black pepper, mustard powder, juice of cherry, salt and castor sugar.

Dip each piece of boiled fish in this mixture and arrange in the dish. Then dip a layer of potatoes. Put the mayonnaise sauce mixture on top. In the centre arrange cut full boiled eggs and cherries. Put cabbage all around. Serve chilled.

Power of love?
Nonika Singh

Movie: Ek Deewana Tha
Cast : Prateik Babbar, Amy Jackson, Manu Rishi, Sachin Khedekar
Director :Gautham Menon
Rating : Average

Love is in the air…. So soon after Ek Mein Ekk Tu comes yet another love story Ek Deewana Tha. Only, unlike the modern take of love in Ek Mein… this one is reminiscent of love of the good old ages. The undying first love. Indeed, love at first sight… in this day and age may seem a trifle obscurantist but as our hero Sachin (Prateik Babbar) falls for the lovely Jessie (Amy Jackson) the moment he sets his eyes on her…. here is to the power of love. So there he goes, the good old Romeo who would go to any length to follow his sweetheart all the way to Kerala even, though she gives him conflicting signals at best.

Remake of a Tamil film, this love tale of a Mahrashtrian Hindu boy and Malyalam Christian girl has all the ingredients to warm the cockles of your heart. But where it goes wrong is the way it seems to move back and forth on the same tangent with no movement forward right up to the first one hour ten minutes. Sure enough the movie has some romantic moments particularly when they meet again after a long gap. The chemistry between the lead romantic pair, who are supposed to be going around in real life too, is more than palpable as well. Sadly enough the best is reserved for the second half. The storyline, too, takes a step forward only post interval even though one wonders where the director can take the movie as it screeches painfully and laboriously close to intermission. It is in the second half that real romance blooms and gets you interested in the fate of the lovers. Till then you couldn’t care less.

There is a film within a film for the hero otherwise a mechanical engineer is not only a movie buff but nurses dreams of becoming a filmmaker one day. And what can be better than his own love story that goes through ups and downs. Set in Mumbai as well as the backwaters of Kerala the camera make love to its locales. AR Rahman’s music, however, fails to lift the narrative even the much hyped and somewhat controversial Hossana does little to add to the rather limp treatment. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics too fail to move. Performance wise one has nothing to complain. Prateik may not be intense lover boy but is more than convincing. As the hero’s confidante Manu Rishi essays a very fine cameo. Amy Jackson despite her confusion emotes well and the role of Christian girl steeped in family values is tailor-made for her though one wishes greater attention was paid to her makeup. Same can be said for the editing and the screenplay.

Overall, on this love ride you may emerge smiling in the end for nothing can be more heart warming than a love tale gone right. But the smile could partly be for the relief that the two hour twenty minute long movie has come to an end. Despite its honesty, the film lets you down for it can’t quite serve you a delectable wholesome.

first-day-first show
Fresh tale

The story of Ek Deewana Tha is based on Sachin, who is a regular 22-year-old engineering graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai and who is in love with the world of cinema.

As a struggler, his long days are filled with waiting and surviving on his pocket money. He falls in love with Jessie who is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy. Shebelongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family where watching movies, partying or falling in love are completely taboo.

The movie is an intense, yet feel good love story of two very different characters and their battle with situations that life throws at them.

Perfect pair

The lead pair of Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson is just so perfect for the movie because of their real and reel life chemistry. The story is all about young and fresh love, so it counts on to be a light one.

Parushni Pathak, student, GGDSD College

No impact

Prateik Babbar has given a good performance but Amy Jackson’s acting is below average. Also, the dialogues lack energy to make an impact on the audience.

Seerat Sandhu, housewife

Lacks passion

The movie definitely has some romantic moments but it fails to put you in the mood for love. The music has passion but is surely not the best of AR Rahman.

Is Imran a perfectionist in the making?

Image makeover: Imran Khan The usually clean shaven Imran Khan, has been spotted flaunting a rather grungy, rugged look for the last couple of days!  He also seems to be looking healthier, as the days pass.

We dug some more to find out that post the considerable applause and acclamations he received for his role in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Imran is already neck deep with his next film – Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola where he is required to play a rustic character who wears a golden kadaa around his wrist, and has his ears pierced! His current look as well as attitude have tell-tale signs of the new character he is working towards, giving us a hint of what to expect in his new movie.

Our sources also found out that, to get into his character, Imran has been working out in a real akhaada to put on weight, and to perfect his body language. It looks like when it comes to sporting the right look and lending authenticity to his character, this boy is a perfectionist too, just like his uncle Aamir!

Imran Khan describes Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola as a dark comedy. Anushka Sharma is his co-star in it and she has a real spicy character in it. The film is set in Rajasthan and is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj who is known for giving people image makeovers by pushing them out of their comfort zones, as he has done with Shahid and Priyanka in the past. The film begins rolling this month and we are looking forward to it.

That 70s show...

Experimental Chitrangada Singh loves 1970s style and says she is excited that it is making a come back on the fashion scene. "I love the era of the sixties and the seventies as I believe in old school of thought. And now since the styles are coming back in fashion, I am all excited," Chitrangada said.

She was talking on the sidelines of ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), where Thursday she walked the ramp for designer Kanika Saluja Choudhry.

"Though I love 1970s style but I still believe in going glamorous every time. I love to try different hair styles, experimenting with my looks and something similar one would see in my next movie. After sporting long hair for many seasons, one will see me in a short hairstyle," she added. Chitrangada walked in Egyptian-style Gladiator dress for Choudhry whose collection was inspired by powerful women. "I think she (Kanika) is just fabulous and I love what she is doing with the theme inspired by modern women. I admire people who don't believe in stereotyping women with one look and she has outshone with her design aesthetics. I also believe in the same. I am not that typical girl next-door who restricts herself with one look and that is what I love about the designer," she said.

Meanwhile, after playing a glamorous college professor in Desi Boyz, the actress is eagerly looking forward to her first item song in Shirish Kunder's Joker, which has Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles.

"The song is very jazzy with few Marathi lines. The rusty village song is choreographed by Farah Khan. I love it and I hope audience would also like it. It will be the next sought after item song in Bollywood," she said. — IANS

Girl interrupted...

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has received intimidating threats since the premiere of her directorial debut In The Land Of Blood And Honey. The 36-year-old actress says she and several of her Serbian cast members have been targeted since the film’s premiere on February 14 in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo, reported a publication.

“There were things sent to me, there were things posted online. The cast... have never complained to me about these threats but I’ve heard through other people it was happening... one of them did have their windows smashed in on their cars and someone else had an issue when their phone was hacked and emails were sent out saying they were from them and saying they had been hurt. It was a scary thought that someone was thinking along those lines,” Jolie said.

The actress fears her movie, about a romance between a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman during the 1990s war in the region, will cause unwanted controversy in the Balkans.

“The physical threats are not what most bothered me because I have been to so many different countries where there are different kinds of threats, being in Afghanistan and other places as an outspoken American woman. It was more that... with a film like this, you don’t want it to be used as a tool... especially in an election year, where people are deciding to label it without having seen it, and try to incite aggression and violence,” she added. — PTI

If your birthday is February 18...

You are energised and inspired creatively as well as emotionally on your birthday. You express yourself freely and are willing to take more chances. Performing arts, sports or other forms of self-expression and entertainment appeal strongly to you now.

Disappointment in a business associate or realisation that you have been neglecting your own needs and working more work than someone else on a project arises now. You may feel neglected. However, if you find yourself really unhappy right now, you probably need to reassess the balance in your life between work and play; between emotional needs and practical concerns. Save the gossip and joke emails – there is an extremely pertinent, time-sensitive communication to handle now and you may be the one who needs to initiate it. Mood: Short-tempered for a while. Compatible signs: Aries, Aquarius, Pisces. Lucky colours: Hot pink, lemon chiffon. Lucky days: Friday. Lucky numbers: 9, 15, 21, 22, 50. Lucky gem: Uvarovite. Lucky flower: Heliotrope

Suggestion on birthday: Donate food to visually challenged/orphans/lepers.
