Immigration kingpin jumps from moving train, flees
Ludhiana, February 17
An undertrial, notorious for having multiple aliases and facing 60 immigration fraud cases, jumped from the moving Jehlum Express here today. Gagan Kumar Bakshi of Lambra village in Jalandhar and currently lodged in the high-security Tihar Jail in Delhi was being taken to Jalandhar for hearing by a team of four Delhi Police personnel.

Snatchers stab woman
Ludhiana, February 17
In yet another snatching incident, two motorcycle-borne snatchers stabbed a woman and fled with her gold jewellery in Focal Point, Urban Estate Phase-II area, here today. The incident took place merely a few yards from the residence of Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura.

Cong leader booked in land grab case

Former District Congress Committee (DCC) president Jagmohan Sharma and his close aide were booked in a multi-crore land grab case by the city police here today. The case was registered following the complaint of Harpal Singh, a resident of Gurdev Nagar.

Man booked for raping daughter

The city police has arrested a man for raping his 16-year-old daughter. The accused, identified as Satish Kumar, who spent over a decade in jail for brutally killing his wife Kamlesh Rani, was caught again by the Salem Tabri police last evening on the charges of raping his daughter.

20-yr-old hit by truck, dies
Ludhiana, February 17
A day after two women were run over by a speeding truck, a 20-year-old girl lost her life after being hit by a pick-up truck on a flyover near Atam Nagar Chowk here today.

After the Excise and Taxation Department cracked its whip on the liquor vends, owners have now put small display boards outside their vends. Last month, the department had issued notices to the liquor vend owners to remove huge hoardings and posters displayed outside.

No scheme to rehabilitate beggars
Ludhiana, February 17
Though the district administration and police have put up boards at major places in the city, asking residents not to encourage beggars by giving alms, as their number will be increased manifolds in a few years to come.

Charging the state government with giving step-motherly treatment to the Sikh migrants, the Ludhiana Sikh Migrants Welfare Board has said that even after 27 years, the victims of anti-Sikh riots had not been given justice.

The rate of electrification in India has not kept pace with expanding population, urbanisation and industrialisation and has resulted in the increasing deficit between demand and supply of electricity, said experts of the Department of Soil and Water Engineering (SWE), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).

A state-level science exhibition for students was recently held at Anandpur Sahib by SCERT, Chandigarh. A team of four students, Yatin Chopra, Kuljeet, Raghav and Nitesh, from BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, displayed their model “BCM e-Complex, a green building” at the exhibition and bagged the first prize in the energy conservation category.

‘Decision to discontinue flying squads to send wrong signal among students’

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has decided not to constitute flying squads to check copying during the second semester this time, as it has been facing a shortage of funds. Two persons, including Dr Anil Kumar Pandey of Balaji Nursing Home and his woman partner Neeraj of Basti Jodhewal, who were booked yesterday by the police following the complaint of an area resident for administering door-to-door chickenpox vaccine in the area by charging Rs 100 per dose were sent to judicial remand today.
