2 commit suicide in city
Chandigarh, February 5
Relatives accompany Gurdial Singh’s wife (centre) at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital at Sector 16 of Chandigarh on Sunday. Class-XII student hangs himself
Chandigarh, February 5
‘I am killing myself because I was unable to achieve my goal’, wrote 18-year-old Gautam before hanging himself from the hook of a ceiling fan at his residence in Sector 16 here today.

Police finds 40 outsiders at PU hostels

Orders passed, but no action taken
Chandigarh, February 5
Despite formal orders by a former Finance Secretary in 2010, the estate office of the Administration has not allowed IT-enabled industry in the Industrial Area here. The UT estate office has also not cleared the applications, seeking permission for the automobile service station allowing denting and painting.

Over 50 pc rape cases fall flat in court
Chandigarh, February 5
The UT police has been unable to prove more than 50 per cent rape cases in court, if one goes by the conviction rate, which has been falling drastically over the years. Showing police failure to hold cases in court, the conviction rate stays less than 50 per cent and has, in fact, declined by 4 per cent in 2011 compared to the year before. Even in high-profile cases, the police has been left red-faced in court.

Cong councillor’s appointment as patron raises eyebrows
Chandigarh, February 5
Appointing a Congress councillor as the patron of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (FOSWAC) has led to dissatisfaction among its executive members, who, at a meeting held today, demanded that the patron should be replaced by a senior member of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA). The members stated that FOSWAC was a non-political organisation and should maintain its identity.

Indian-origin woman in Canadian Senate

Dr Asha Seth with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Dr Asha Seth, an obstetrician and gynaecologist based in Toronto, has become the first-ever Canadian woman of Indian origin to be nominated to the Senate, the Upper House of the Parliament of Canada. Nominated by the ruling Conservatives, she becomes the second Canadian of Indian origin after Vim Kochar to be nominated to the Senate.

Aviva Life Insurance fined Rs 10,000
Chandigarh, February 5
The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum-I, in a recent order, has slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Aviva Life Insurance Company for its failure to make payment to a Ropar resident, who was seeking money for the treatment of his kidney after surrendering the policy.

3.2-km road stretch incomplete

In the run-up, the March 6 counting of votes polled during the January 30 elections, the Rs 12 crore work of widening the 3.5 km long sections of the arterial-road passing through Phases IV, V, III-B1, III-B2 and VII, Mohali, seems to have suffered the causality of the election model code of conduct.

MC provides shelter to homeless
Mohali, February 3
With the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) failing to allot land for a “Raen Basera” for shelterless people in the town, the Municipal Council has now provided the facility on a temporary basis abiding by the directions of the Supreme Court passed in this regard.

Even as the beneficiaries under the land-pooling scheme are waiting for the draw of lots for allotment of around 1,400 plots in Mullanpur Eco-City, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has started issuing letters of intent (LOI) to successful allottees under the general category.

Street dance, plays mark Day 2
Chandigarh, February 5
A student shows some dance moves during ‘Goonj’ at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology in Chandigarh on Sunday. The day two of “Goonj” organised by the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) at PU campus was a little more colourful than day one, as it was packed with cultural events. The day began with street dance competitions in which 10 shortlisted teams gave their performance and the event had an audience of over 300 students who were fascinated by the agility and steps of the dance groups.

A resident of the Kandwal village was run over by a speedy train on the Ambala-Rajpura rail section near Ambala city, this morning. The deceased has identified as Gursaib Singh.

PEC, Thapar varsity shine in quiz

The two-day national tech fest “Proudyogikii-12” concluded at Chitkara University, Banur, on Saturday. Nearly 6,500 students from various universities and institutes, including Panjab University, Punjabi University, Kurukshetra University, Thapar University, IIT Roorkee, IIT Mandi, IIT Ropar, NIT Hamirpur, NIT Jalandhar, PEC, GNDU participated in 30 technical and literary events organised by the student chapters of seven national and international technical societies.

HC directives on wards of ex-servicemen

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Haryana Government that married daughters of ex-servicemen should be given the same consideration as dependent married sons of ex-servicemen for the purpose of employment under various welfare schemes.

Pedestrian killed
Chandigarh, February 5
A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a heavy vehicle last night at the light point of sector 25 and 38. The police has registered a case under sections 279, 304-A of the IPC against unknown driver who fled from the spot after hitting him.

‘Fraud’ by Country Club
Chandigarh, February 5
High drama was witnessed at the Aroma hotel when some residents of Mohali alleged that they had been duped by a private company here. The residents alleged that the owner of Country Club had duped them after receiving a total of Rs 20,000 in 2000 from each person on the pretext of providing membership of the club. A total of 618 applied for the membership.

BDS student attacked in hostel
Panchkula, January 5
A final-year student of the BDS College, Barwala, was injured after some unidentified youths attacked him with iron rods and sticks at his hostel room, late last night. According to information, the victim, who has been identified as Sahil Abrol, a native of Ludhiana, was sleeping in his room when some youths knocked at his room about 1.30 am. As Sahil opened the door, one of the youths allegedly pointed a pistol on his temple and others started beating him with rods. He received serious injuries on his head and legs.

Despite 4 watchmen, thieves strike mobile shop
Mohali, February 5
A theft took place at a mobile shop in Sohana late last night where the burglars allegedly took away mobiles, watches and mobile re-charge cards worth Rs 90,000. Sources said that the owner of the shop received a call at 3 am from the market watchman that the shutter of his shop was broken.

Two out of the four kidnappers Varinder Kumar and Hanish Ansari, who were involved in the kidnapping of seven-year-old Vijay, son of a roadside vendor, have been sent  for the police remand for one day.

42-year-old hit by unknown vehicle, dies
Zirakpur, February 5
A 42-year-old labourer died after he was hit by an unknown vehicle near Baltana link road on the Zirakpur-Kalka highway last night. The deceased has been identified as Jang Bahadur hailing from Bihar.

Faridabad players clinch carrom titles
